Guide Opening =============================================================================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1.01 - Version History =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.00 - 3 May 2010 - The first complete version of this FAQ. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1.02 - Introduction =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Welcome to my FAQ for 2002 FIFA World Cup. This is a comprehensive FAQ that will detail how to play the game, as well as give a complete, statistical list of every squad to choose from. This FAQ is based on the GameCube version of this game, as I noticed that there was little FAQ coverage for this game on GameFAQs, and none whatsoever on the GameCube port, so I decided to go ahead and write for this game. 2002FWC comes from the same makers as the fabled FIFA series, based on the 2002 event of football's most famous tournament. It uses the same gameplay elements as the FIFA 1997 - 2002 editions, with a few minor enhancements such as shooting and passing meters, and has more of that World Cup feel to it. You can pick one of many international teams as you aim to guide them to 2002 World Cup glory. As well as this, there are a few All-Star teams to unlock, giving you some more replay value. Although outdated now, I still think there's a lot of fun to be had from this one, so if you're into your football games, this is by all means worth a play. =============================================================================== 2. Game Overview =============================================================================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.01 - Controls =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= A - Make selections in menu screens, pass (hold down to build up pass meter & add more weight on the pass), perform low pass in dead-ball situations, switch marker to player nearest to the ball when not in possession Analog Stick - Move cursor in menu screens, select between teams, move player with marker over their head, guide direction of shoots and passes, move arrow guide to direct dead-ball shots B - Cancel selections made in menu screens/return to previous menu, perform high pass/cross (hold down to build up high pass meter & add more height/distance on the high pass), perform high pass/cross in dead-ball situations, slide tackle C-Stick - Perform one-two pass L - Add left-sided ballspin on a free kick/goal kick/corner kick R - Add right-sided ballspin on a free kick/goal kick/corner kick, special moves Start - Go to main menu from title screen, pause & bring up Pause Menu while playing, resume when paused X - Shoot (hold down to build up shot meter & add more power on the shot), perform shot in dead-ball situations, conservative tackle Y - Repeatedly tap to make marked player run when used in conjunction with the Analog Stick Z - Make goalkeeper come out of his area to challenge for the ball =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.02 - Basics =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [ Main Menu ] ---------------------------------------------------------------- Friendly - Play a friendly exhibition match between two teams of your choice available in the game. After making this selection, you are taken to the Team Select menu, which looks somewhat like this: +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 2002 FIFA WORLD CUP | | K O R E A J A P A N TEAM SELECT | | --------------------------------------+ | | HOME ()| | | _________ --------------------------------------¦ | | ( Ranking ) -----------------| | | | `-------' | ## | | | | 9 |################| | | | | ## | | | | |----------------- | | | --------------------------------------¦ | | AWAY ()| | | _________ --------------------------------------¦ | | ( Ranking ) -----------------| | | | `-------' |@@@@@ #####| | | | 1 |@@@@@ #####| | | | |@@@@@ #####| | | | |----------------- | | | --------------------------------------+ | | (B) Back (A) Forward | +-----------------------------------------------------+ Using Left and Right on the Analog Stick or D-Pad, you can choose between international teams, and by pressing Up and Down, you can choose between the Home team and the Away team (denoted by which arrow markers are flashing). As the instructions at the bottom of the screen indicate, pressing B will return you back to the main menu screen, while pressing A takes you to the next menu, where you select your side to control in the upcoming match. Here is what the Side Select menu looks like: +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 2002 FIFA WORLD CUP | | K O R E A J A P A N SIDE SELECT | | ------------------------------------------------+ | | England France | | | ------------------------------------------------+ | | __ _ | | | \/ |_|__________ Player 1 | | | | | | Player 2 | | | | | | Player 3 | | | | | | Player 4 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Press Left or Right to choose a side | | | ------------------------------------------------+ | | (B) Back (A) Forward | +-----------------------------------------------------+ By pressing Left or Right, this lets you choose between playing as the Home team, the Away team, or by going in the middle you control neither time and just watch the match. So, when a GameCube controller is shown on the left hand side of the screen, whichever Player number that controller is assigned to will control the Home team. If it's on the right hand side, that player number controls the Away team. So, if you have several players, you can team up together and share control responsibilities, or go head to head. Pressing B will take you back to the Team Select menu, while pressing A takes you to the match. 2002 FIFA World Cup - Choose this to advance to the main game mode, where you select a team and attempt to guide them to World Cup Glory. Rules & Gameplay =============================================================================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.01 - Open Play =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= A Game of Two Halves -------------------- Any half-clued football fan knows that every game is taken up in two halves. So when you begin your match, one team will attack the goal at the opposite end of their half, and for the opposing team, vice versa. You change sides after half- time. If you are playing a game that goes into extra time, you return to your original side of the field for the first period (15 mins) of extra time. You swap sides once more when you go into the second period of extra time. Player Control -------------- __ You control one outfield player at a time in a game. They are marked by a \/ triangle [1] or, for players with star abilities, a star [2]. All movement [1] is controlled with the use of the GameCube's Analog stick. Movement is the same whether or not you have possession - the only real major difference _/\_ is that a player slows down by a degree when they have the ball at their \/ feet. To make a player sprint, repeatedly tap the Y button. //\\ [2] To switch between players that you control, you either have to pass the ball in the direction of that particular player, or if you are currently not in possession of the ball, press the A button and control switches over to the player that is nearest to the ball. Also, one last but somewhat important thing to know is that you can make your goalkeeper charge out of his area to challenge for the ball by holding Z (the goalie doesn't have to actually be the player you are controlling). On the easier skill levels you won't really have to call on this skill, but just in case the opposition gets a lucky break and you are in a one-on-one situation, it is a good idea to use this so that you can reduce the opposition's chances of scoring. Passing/Crossing ---------------- _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ All passes and crosses are measured by a white pass | | | | | | | | | | | | | meter [3]. To pass to another player, while in |_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_| possession of the ball just simply hold the Analog [3] Stick to aim in the direction of the player you wish to pass to, and hold the A button down. The longer you keep the A button held down, the more the meter builds up. The more you fill up the meter, the more weight that is put on the pass. For example, if you just tap the A button, you'll make a very slow-paced, but accurate pass. However, the risk with this type of pass is that it can easily be intercepted by an opposition player. Likewise, by holding the A button and completely filling the meter, you'll make a strong pass that covers a lot of ground, but the downside of this is they're hard to aim and if your teammate misses the pass, it could go out of play for a set-piece in favour of the other team. Once you get used to playing about with this, you'll know how to measure your passes in most, if not every situation. Crosses and high passes are executed with the B button, and are judged by the same meter as that which is used with normal passes. However, this performs higher passes that can go over opposition defenders, however they're trickier to aim and pull off than normal passes. Also, if you can get to the side of your opponent's penalty area, then turn to face the area, you can use this button to send in a ball for a teammate to either header towards goal, or take down and then try to shoot. Again, you'll need to practise well to know how much pressure to put on the cross - because if you don't put on enough it won't reach the intended target, or if you put on too much it will go much further than intended and most likely out of play. Shooting -------- _ Any time you are in the opponent's half, you can take _| | a shot at goal with the use of the X button. Like the _| | | pass and cross moves, shots also have a meter, albeit _ _.-.-| | | | a differently shaped one [4]. Note that the last bar _ _ _.-.-| | | | | | | | on the right of this meter is coloured red - if your |_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_| shot builds up to here, the shot will have too much [4] power and will be horrendously overhit - going well high and well wide. So, more often than not, you'll be wanting to try and get your shots as close to the red bar without actually filling it - this way you'll get more power and accuracy on the shot, especially if you're using a player with shooting as their star ability (their shots go much faster and beat the keepers before they can even react). When you press the X button in your own half with the ball, this performs a clearance, in which a player simply hoofs the ball upfield. This will come in to help if the opposition is attacking, so just use this technique to get the ball away to safety. Tackling -------- There are two types of tackles that can be performed when you are defending - these are the Conservative Tackle and the Sliding Tackle. Here is a definition of both: - A Conservative Tackle is performed with the X button. The player simply nudges the opponent in possession of the ball when you're next to them, to try and take them off the ball. You'll almost never commit a foul this way if you come in from the front, but from behind you'll never get the ball and may give the opposition a free kick. This is better to win possession and you'll be using it much more often than a sliding tackle. - A Sliding Tackle is performed with the B button. This is usually better to use as a last-ditch attempt if the opponent has possession deep into your half and is running towards goal. However, this takes very good timing and positioning to pull off well, and if you take out the opponent without winning the ball, you could end up being penalised or even sent off. NEVER try this against a player from behind, and NEVER EVER try this on the goalkeeper, as this results in a direct red card. Offside ------- The old rule that is almost too difficult to put into words. An offside is committed when a player passes the ball to a teammate who is behind the opposition's last line of defence - and if this happens, the opposition is awarded an indirect free kick at the spot where the offside occurred. Remember, the player is only offside at the moment the ball is PASSED, not received. Here's an example. X2 X1 has possession of the ball. Y1 is opposition player Y -> nearest their own goal. X2 is nearer to the goal than Y2 Y1 Team -> and is therefore offside. If X1 passes to X2, offside is Goal -> called and Y Team are given an indirect free kick. X1 X2 -> X3 X1 has possession of the ball. X2 is in front of Y1, who Y -> is nearest their own goal therefore X2 is onside. X1 Y1 Team -> passes the ball while X2 is still in this position, but Goal -> X2 runs into position X3. However, as the ball was X1 passed before X2 ran behind Y1, the player is onside and can head towards goal. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.02 - Disclipline =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Yellow Card ----------- A yellow card is given to a player when they commit a foul on an opponent. This acts as a caution. Here are some notes on yellow cards and when they are given: - If you foul an opponent without getting the ball, this results in a yellow card. - If a player receives 2 yellow cards in the same game, this results in a red card and the player being sent off. In 2002 FIFA World Cup mode, if a player receives 2 yellow cards in the tournament (although not in the same game), they miss the next game their team plays after the receiving of the second card, that is if the team progresses to that next round. Red Card -------- A red card denotes a sending off of the player whom it is given to. Two yellow cards will constitute an automatic red card, however in some circumstances for really severe fouls can result in a red card straight away. Here are some notes on red cards: - If a player gets 2 yellow cards in one game this results in a red card. - If a player commits a very dangerous foul (e.g. two-footed, studs showing and not getting the ball), this would be a foul that is given a straight red card. - If you foul a goalkeeper while they are handling the ball, the offending player is given a straight red card. - In 2002 FIFA World Cup mode, any red-carded player misses the next match of the tournament if their team progresses. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.03 - Set Pieces =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Throw-ins --------- \/ A throw-in is awarded when a player of the opposing team puts the ball out /\ of play over the touchlines. When you are given a throw-in, use the Analog [1] Stick to move the aiming marker [1] and simply hold A to build up strength in the throw and when you let go, the ball is hurled in that direction. Goal Kicks ---------- .. A goal kick is awarded when a player puts the ball over the by- .` `. line behind the opposition's goal (either to the side of the goal .` `. or over it). The goal kick is taken on the corner of the 6-yard `__ __` box nearest to where the ball went out of play. When you are \ / taking a goal kick, a red arrow [2] appears to show the direction \ / in which the kick will go. You can aim this with the Analog Stick, \/ and add curve to the kick by holding the L or R buttons. Hold X to [2] build up power in the shot meter and then let go for the kick to be taken. Corner Kicks ------------ A corner kick is awarded when a player puts the ball out of play over their own by-line. The ball is placed at the corner nearest where the ball went out of play. Again, a red arrow appears to show where the kick will go. Move it with the Analog Stick, and put bend on the corner with the L or R buttons. You'll want to get enough power and bend to get it high into the penalty area, so that one of your own players can get a head to the ball or have a shot at goal if it drops to their feet. Penalty Kicks ------------- A penalty is given when a player is fouled by an opposing player in the opponent's penalty box. From 12 yards out, facing only the keeper, the spot kick taker takes the penalty to try and get a goal. Try to get as much power as possible on the shot without it actually going past the red marker, and hope the goalkeeper doesn't save. Here is a diagram of where the ball roughly goes by holding the corresponding directions as you take the penalty: _________________________________________________ | _____________________________________________ | |
