In Avalance Alley, between the first and second checkpoints 3 extra lives are available. If you die before hitting checkpoint number 2 you start over at checkpoint number 1. Thus netting 2 lives, you can continue to do this to rapidly accumulate men. In truth this can be done other places as long as you die before physically touching a checkpoint - Avalanche Alley is the easiest place I found.
