You can get characters by completing tasks or a certain amount of matches i always do the tasks though T_T i never got a character by matches T_T.
(p.s. the matches absoulutly have to be in v.s. not adventure/classic.) | Unlockable: | How | | jiggily-puff | beat classic or do fiftey matches | | dr.-mario | beat classic without losing a life or do 100 matches | | falco | beat 100 man melee or do 300 matches | | luigi | if in the first part of adventure you get a 2 in your time you get him or do 800 matches | | ganondorf | beat event match #29 or do 600 matches | | mew-two | play 20 hours of playing without turning the gamecube off or do 700 matches | | marth | play classic as all default characters or do 400 matches | | roy | beat classic with marth or play 900 matches | | young-link | beat classic 10 times with different people each time and link has to be one or beat adventure mode with ganon or do 500 matches | | pichu | beat adventure with mewtwo or beat event 37 unlock luigi and falco or play 200 matches | | mr.-gameandwatch | beat classic/target test with all characters or do 1000 matches |
