Lacey ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7:41 PM 6/28/2007 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Version 1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== =============================================================================== Why a Guide for Barbie Magic Genie? Why a Guide for Barbie ANYTHING? ~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== I picked up Barbie Magic Genie (for not a lot of money, of course) because I wanted to see how bad the game was. Then I could conjure up some juicy review on how bad and evil the game was and post it for all to see, warning parents not to invest in Barbie and ordering them to boycott her producuts. Surprise! This game isn't half bad. Barbie Magic Genie is a very simple but at times very frustrating adventure game. Set aside any assumptions, this game is probably nothing like what you think it might be like. It takes a few role playing elements (I can't call it an RPG though, at least if I want my house to NOT be raided by an Square fanbase, that is) and it incorperates them. There are items to get, things to explore, and best of all, mini games to play. Yes, mini games! And they're not cheap and easy games that any twit could solve in two minutes. Some of them, especially the last one, are quite hard to beat. Others, like the flip a card over and remember what it is and try to find another card like it, are here too. Don't expect any game of the year awards here. Expect a decent introduction to video games for kids. The game is very hard at some points, so that's why I wrote this. Spending more than $10 on this is a waste of money. Also, you cannot die in this game. At least I haven't. Completing the game is not easy though, just in case you thought it was. =============================================================================== Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Story [000] Controls [001] Walkthrough [002] Game Review [003] Filler [004] =============================================================================== Story ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Code: [000] "One day Barbie Genie and her friends Fiera, Terra, Sylvia, and Marid were having a lovely picnic outside The Crystal City Palace. While Barbie was busy getting some water... the evil sultan, Kardal took the four magic lamps from Barbie Genie's friends, making them powerless! 'Stop! Bring back those lamps!' shouts Barbie. 'Ha! Ha! Ha! The genies' powers will be mine!' says the sulton. 'I'll get the lamps back, but I'd better get some help first.' says Barbie. =============================================================================== Controls ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Code: [001] In Barbie Magic Genie, you play as Barbie on a flying carpet in 2D. You can move barbie in all directions by using the D-Pad. You can talk to people, rescue genies, and do more with A. As far as I know, B is rarely used. Select will let you see your inventory. Press start to see your password. Write down your password to contiune the game later. =============================================================================== Walkthrough ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Code: [002] ========================= First Level: Crystal City ========================= You have to find four crystal balls in the city. The first one is easy to find, it is just to the right from where you start. The second one isn't too far from where you start. It's on a high building before the crystal palace entrance. Now, go inside of the palace and talk to Queen Aladima. Go high up in the room and you'll see some blue carpets hanging, go toward those and behind them is an entrance to the first maze. The third crystal ball is in the maze, and the fourth crystal ball is in the reading room that you can enter at the end of the maze (it's pretty high up). Note that the mazes in this game may look like they have a dead end but in some cases you can pass over certin pillars and walls. So don't turn around and take another route unless you're sure you have to. Once you have all four crystal balls, take them back to Queen Aladima where she will give you a training session. For the first part, simply put each crystal ball where it belongs (tornado goes with the tornado symbol, etc). The second part is easy, just don't let the object hit the ground. After that, Queen Aladima will send you to the forest. Leave the palace and go right, and you'll be able to go into the forest now. ============================ Second Level: Magical Forest ============================ Start the level off by going to the hut near the tree with a guy dressed in red is standing. He'll want you to help him water a field of flowers. A mini game will start. Simply move the cloud around the field and get all of the spaces filled with flowers. Just press B if you make a mistake, you can make as many as you want. You'll get a ring. Put it on and go to the tree cave. You'll be in another maze. The first genie will be held here. She'll be to the right. She isn't too hard to find. Once you leave the tree, go way high up and you'll spot the entrance to the City of Clouds. =========================== Third Level: City of Clouds =========================== Talk to the King (you can spot him on a balcony). He'll explain that he wants the Pegasus babies to learn how to fly, and that you're the perfect person to teach them how. A mini game will start. The trick here is that this level has invisible platforms (at least my copy does, glitch?). If the baby Pegasus seems to float on something, that's a hidden platform, and you can stay there. Keep hunting for platforms and get to the cloud. Once you touch the cloud the mini game shall be complete. You'll get the required ring. Take it to the upper right hand part of the level. Go into the maze and again head toward the upper right to rescue the genie. Exit the maze the same way you came in and go to the lower part of the City of Clouds and you'll find the entrance to Dragon Playground. =============================== Fourth Level: Dragon Playground =============================== Talk to Baroness Von Dragon. He's the guy in red not too far from the start of the level on the ground. He'll tell you how he can't get his Dragon's to sleep. A mini game will start. This is the easiest mini game. All you have to do is flip a card and then match it with another. Keep flipping and you'll eventaully get all cards. Since the cards that you match will be cleared, the game gets easier as you go on. When you beat the mini game, you'll get Fiera's Magic Ring. Put it on and go into the Dragon Nursery. Now, this is important if you want to get through this part without pulling out all your hair. Once you find the well, go down it. It's opening is shaped like this: _ _ \___/ And it's dark in the middle. Find the next genie and rescue her. Once you've done that, go to Hiddel Atlantis. It's to the right of the Dragon Nursery. ============================ Fifth Level: Hidden Atlantis ============================ There is a turtle floating near the start of the screen. Talk to him, and he'll introduce himself. Apparently the evil Sultan has put everyone in this mermaid town asleep. You can break the spell by playing yet another mini game. For this mini game, watch the pattern of fish closely, then catch that same pattern of fish. If you mess up, press B. If you think you have the right pattern, press A. Put on the ring that the turtle gives you and go to the coral reef. You'll be in yet another maze, but this one isn't so hard. Rescue the last genie and leave the maze. Go to the front of the level and talk to the elderly mermaid. She'll give you a required potion if you can complete the last mini game. ================================== Final Puzzle: Rainbow Magic Potion ================================== The single hardest puzzle in the game. I like to start off on the bottom. and work my way up. If you make a mistake you won't be able to go any further (you'll see what I mean). A completed puzzle will have every color connected to the same color. I wouldn't start in the middle. Once you have every color matching, you'll get the Rainbow Magic Potion. Note: The insides of the wheels turn pink when you get the right combo. Go to the upper part of Hidden Atlantis and enter the palace. =========================== Final Maze: Kardal's Palace =========================== Navigate through the maze. If you want to get to Kardal ASAP, just navigate through the maze and go in the upper right direction. Once you find him, you'll have beat the game! Congrats! =================== Ending **SP01L3RZ** =================== Kardal: Barbie!!! Barbie: Now that I've got the Magic Rainbow Potion and all my friends have their powers back, Kardal is no match for us! You know what they say, those who laugh most learn best! So the genies place a happiness spell on Kardal causing him to laugh endlessly. Kardal: Hahahahaheehee! I can't stop laughing! And balance is returned to Barbie Genie's world. =============================================================================== Game Review ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Code: [003] When curiousity gets the best of us, it can sometimes lead to dire and severe consequences. Playing bad games for the sake of seeing what they're like - getting a dose of morbid facination, if you will - can be a bad move. Just ask the poor gamers who subjected themselves to titles such as "Custer's Revenge", "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties", and "Mary Kate and Ashley: Get a Clue" and are now scared for life. Poor souls, I have played those games as well, and I feel for you, all of you. Curiousity can be a good thing, though, and especially in this case. Expectations for "Barbie Magic Genie" were at the bottom of the scale, and with good reason. It appeared to have everything that a poor title typically has; It's based on something that has nothing to do with video games, it's aimed at children who beg their parents to buy licensed titles, and it features Barbie to boot. With all that said, after beating "Barbie Magic Genie" twice, one can say "Hey, that wasn't so bad at all!" "Barbie Magic Genie" is an ingriguing game that makes an effort to give younger gamers a bit of a challange. It features gigantic mazes, numerous puzzles, plenty of item hunting, and some decent (although repetitive) tunes. The game is on the short side, but the five hours it takes to complete the game for the first time is admiriable for a game in this category. The one thing about this game that makes it easier than most adventure games is that you cannot die or otherwise lose the game. You have unlimited oppertunities to complete every puzzle, complete every quest, and you can take as much time as you want to in the mazes. This lessens the challange to a point, but the game can still be quite frustrating on your first playthrough, since the game at times gives you very few clues as to what is supposed to be done. Also, the mazes in this game can be a migraine to navigate, causing you to yell out something along the lines of "Barbie, can't you just fly around the pillar? Yes, I know this game is in 3D, but I think you ought to make an exception." You take the roll of Barbie Genie. You are outside of The Crystal City Palace enjoying a picnic with some of your fellow genie friends. All is well and grand, until the evil sultan Kardal suddenly shows up and steals all of your genie pal's magical lamps for his own greedy use. You try to stop him, but he's too quick, and he escapes from the scene with all of the lamps in hand, and with all of the genies inside. Except for Barbie! Barbie Genie takes on the task of obtaining all four of the missing lamps and setting the genies in them free. After that, Kardal will be taught a lesson he'll never forget. You start off outside of a grand palace (that's colored entirely pink, of coure) and you'll start your adventure by doing some treasure hunting. You'll have to find some crystals that are hidden in and outside of the palace, some of which are tricky to find. Once you have accquired them all, you must take them to the queen where she'll give you some much needed genie training. You'll have to prove that you can solve basic puzzles before moving on to the next part of the game. The rest of the game is straightforward, you'll have to go to an area, such as a lush green forest, and do a favor for someone. The favors are completed by solving puzzle mini games, like card flipping and matching and color matching games. After you've completed your favor, you'll be given a required upgrade (usually a ring) that will help you in your quest. After you put on your upgrade, you must travel to the maze part of the world. These are located in spooky caves, large volcanos, and even mysterious coral reefs. The mazes can take up an estimiated 100+ Game Boy Color screens - that should give an idea as to just how large they are. Thankfully, they can be navigated to the correct location with a bit of paitence and commitment. You can do it, Barbie fans, the missing genies depend on you. There are no boss fights to speak of, just some challanging puzzles and daunting mazes to give your brains a workout. The graphics are functional and clear, but nothing overly impressive. Thankfully, they ditched the pink by the first level. The rest of the worlds feature nicely detailed forests, a city up in the sky floating on clouds, and evan an underwater kingdom. I should note that after seeing Barbie's full figure in one of the cutscenes, I think a request is in order: The magic carpet that Barbie rides on should send her to the nearest Arabian McDonalds, and pronto. She seriously looks like she hasn't eaten in a week. No condition to save your fellow genieship in. Audiowise, this BMG's Arabian music quickly turns into a mild irritation. It's not bad, just repettive. "Barbie Magic Genie" is an okayish game that can provide some fun and challange to the appropriate auidence. The puzzles add a lot of extra enjoyment and the mazes the extra bit of challange. It's obviously not going to win any game of the century awards, it's just better than average. Give the game to your Barbie crazed, insane little sister before she moves on to better games, or give it a go yourself if you like this sort of stuff. I'm sure everyone reading this loved to play with Barbie dolls when they were little, right? =============================================================================== Filler ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Code: [004] =============== Version History =============== This is version one, has everything you see here.
