Yeah- u can get puppies- i've done it on both of my saved games.
Just telling the first person the answered this question- yes puppies r cute - but u should know it's cute as it looks much like the puppy u get when you FIRST get your 'dog' as it is a dog- but it's actually a PUPPY.
BUT yes u CAN GET PUPPIES - 2 clear that up!
