I. "YOU HAD ME FROM HELLO"
(INTRODUCTION)
===========================
Hello! I'm Arashinonatsu and this is my second guide for Harvest Moon.
I've compiled as much information as I could to endeavor to make the best
in-depth relationship guide for Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (FoMT)
and Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town, the alternate "for girls"
version of FoMT. More Friends is commonly referred to as MFoMT, an acronym I
despise and find quite awkward. Therefore, I will *always* use the acronym
MoFo ('Mo're 'F'riends 'o'f) and shamelessly encourage you to use it as well.
*NOTE! This guide has information pertaining *only* to these two (2)
versions of Harvest Moon for the Game Boy Advance. I cannot help
with any other game.
This guide includes information on how to befriend and/or woo not just the
ten main and four special marriageable characters, but also how to befriend the
local townspeople. Eventually, I hope to include the Harvest Sprites and your
farm animals as well. Though the guide is clearly unfinished, it still
contains a lot of information for both the new and advanced player.
Later in the guide, you will notice that every character has an
astrological sign. This is NOT an official stat. It is only my personal
humble opinion.
Because this guide is so large, if you need something specific, you should
make use of the Ctrl+F "Find" feature in most browsers and text editing
programs. Pressing 'Ctrl+F' should bring up the search bar to type in the
section or character you are looking for. ^_^
========================
II. "THE SWEETEST DAYS"
(CALENDAR OF EVENTS)
========================
Years in harvest Moon are comprised of four seasons: Spring, Summer,
Autumn (Fall), and Winter. Each season consists of 30 days. It's important to
keep track of dates; many crops, events, and even characters are
season-specific. There is an uneditable calendar where festival days are
circled located on the wall of your home. Birthdays and anniversaries you will
have to keep track of on your own.
All the characters in the game have a birthday, but each of the marriage
candidates have an alternate birthday. If you choose your birthday at the
start of the game and the date you chose falls on a bachelorette/bachelor's
regular birthday, their birthday will instead be on the alternate day. For
example, if you choose Summer 03 for your character's birthday, the game will
automatically change Popuri's birthday to her alternate day of Summer 10.
Often the day before a festival, or certain events, someone will come to
your house first thing in the morning to remind you. Be careful. If you
oversleep, teleport out, sleep until the next day, or hang out in the bathroom
for too long, you may miss an important house call.

III. "LOOKING FOR LOVE"
(HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS AND BABIES)
=====================================
The first thing to do is to familiarize yourself with where everything is
and when they open. There are two ways to bring up a view of the Town Map.
One is to press 'Start', which brings up the menu at the bottom of the screen,
then move the cursor to the map icon and press 'A'. The other method is to
press the 'Left Shoulder Button' and 'Start' at the same time. That will bring
up the map automatically. The map will have locations for and briefly explain
each major area, and show the hours of many businesses.
There are many benefits to making friends in Mineral Town. You don't have
to be friends with everyone, you don't even have to be friends with *anyone*,
but you'll lose out on the major theme and charm of the game if you play the
loner. Every character in the game has a friendship meter that rises or falls
based on your actions. They start off very neutral towards you, but that can
easily change. You can raise or lower friendship points in a number of
different ways. Friendship levels will increase if you:
-- Attend a festival (only increases for the people who are also attending).
-- Confess to Carter that no one likes you and you are forgiven.
-- Give someone a gift that they like.
Friendship levels will decrease if you:
-- Display Golden Lumber.
-- Give someone a gift that they don't like.
-- Litter!
I'm going to explain littering because it decreases friendship points by a
noticeable amount, and many players don't realize that it affects friendship
points at all. When you throw an item onto the ground and the item disappears,
the game considers this to be littering. Throwing things into the water is
also considered littering. The penalty gets even steeper during festivals.
You should know that there is a garbage can in Rose Square where you can safely
toss your garbage.
However, if you really want to throw something away, and you can't get to
Rose Square, just go into your rucksack. Move the pointer to the item that you
want to throw away and press 'Start'. It will ask you if you want to throw the
item away. No penalties! This works for your rucksack, the refrigerator, the
shelf, and the Tool box! Also, a neat trick to know is that pressing the 'A'
and 'B' buttons at the same time will allow you to automatically access your
rucksack at any time. This will come in handy when you can't access the start
menu during events and festivals.
There are a number of aspects in the game that change when you become
friends with people. Characters will change their dialogue. Some may even
give you a recipe to add to your cookbook, or other valuable gifts and
opportunities. You may receive letters and cards in the mail, and special
character events can be unlocked. Some people will allow you to visit them
earlier, stay later, or even enter a locked room. Friendship can also lead to
marriage.
--------------------
III.01. Gift Points
--------------------
You can give a gift to any character in the game. However, you can't just
give *anything* to *anyone*. Each of the characters have different
personalities, and therefore, different tastes. They don't all like the same
things. Just because Basil loves Red Grass, doesn't mean his wife Anna does
too. Giving someone an item that they like will raise their friendship points
for you. Giving them something that they dislike will do the opposite.
The townspeople will start out with an affection for you at a neutral
setting of about 49 or 50 friendship points (maximum 255). Marriage candidates
will start with their affection for you at 0 points (maximum 65,535). While
the gift point table is listed below for both, some people may find it easier
to imagine that the Bachelorette/Bachelor points apply to the townspeople as
well. Please feel free to do so. It may not be as accurate, but it does work
very nicely.
Bachelorettes/Bachelors Townspeople
-------------- -----------
Special Favorite Items: +800 Points n/a
Loved Items: +500 Points +9
Liked Items: +300 Points +3
Neutral Items: +100 Points +1
Disliked Items: -500 Points -3
Hated Items: -800 Points -9
You can give someone a gift as is, or you can have it gift-wrapped at the
Supermarket for 100G. If the item is something that the recipient will love,
the gift-wrapping will boost the amount of friendship points received by 125%.
If the item is something that they hate, their points will plummet down by the
same amount. The same holds true for a person's birthday. Giving a character
a gift that they love on their birthday will give the item's points a boost by
at least 500% (625% gift-wrapped)!
You can give gifts to the same person multiple times per day. The first
time will yield the full amount of points, but every gift after that will be
less effective than the first (becoming only 1/3 of the normal point value). I
wouldn't recommend giving the same person more than five gifts per day, nine
at the most.
Sometimes you may actually *want* to lower someone's friendship level for
you. This can be especially true in regards to triggering Heart Events and
Rival Heart events explained in the next section. In that case, you will want
to give that individual character a hated gift for a while. This is the best
way, as it won't affect any other characters' levels.
Remember that raising or lowering someone's friendship levels may take no
time at all, or they may take several weeks of repeated gift-giving. Just keep
your eyes on the goal and remain vigilant.
---------------------
III.02. Heart Levels
---------------------
Marriage candidates have a visibly beating heart on their chest when you
talk to them. The heart will grow bigger and change colors as they care for
you more. There are seven Heart Levels, which you can think of like a
backwards rainbow. Here they are, from lowest to highest.
Black >> Purple >> Blue >> Green >> Yellow >> Orange >> Red
The point system for the Heart Levels works basically like this:
Black Heart = 0 - 9,999 Points
Purple Heart = 10,000 - 19,999 Points
Blue Heart = 20,000 - 29,999 Points
Green Heart = 30,000 - 39,999 Points
Yellow Heart = 40,000 - 49,999 Points
Orange Heart = 50,000 - 59,999 Points
Red Heart = 60,000 - 65,535 Points
Obviously you can't see where the exact points are at, but you'll at least
be able to do a "guess-timate".
Now, some characters have invisible heart levels. These secret marriage
candidates are the Gourmet, Harvest Goddess, Kappa, and Won. Because they
already have extra requirements and situations making them difficult to marry,
these characters do not have a rival love.
As the marriage candidates move up in Heart Levels, there are certain
"boost" events that you can trigger to make their love points raise
considerably. These are called Heart Events and they are triggered at four
specific levels. These levels are:
Black >> Purple >> Blue >> Yellow
Heart Events are basically a cinema cut-scene that you trigger by entering
a certain area at a certain time. They involve a choice on your part. The
wrong answer will cause your friend's love points to drop by a lot. The right
answer will cause the love points to raise.
If you raise someone's Heart Level too fast, it's possible that you can
wind up skipping a Heart Event. If the Heart Level becomes too high, it will
prevent you from viewing a lower event. For example, in FoMT, if you get Elli
to Purple Heart before seeing her Black Heart event, you will not be able to
trigger the Black Heart event at all (or any subsequent events). You will have
to work to lower her Heart Level back down. You canNOT get married to a
character without seeing each of that character's four Heart Events.
Take your time! These particular HM games don't actually end, so there is
no real rush to get married immediately. However, it's important to know that
you have rivals in love. Each potential spouse (except the secret
bachelorette/bachelors) has another person vying for their attention. The
rival couples are:
Ann == Cliff
Elli == Doctor
Karen == Rick
Mary == Gray
Popuri == Kai
Each of your rivals have four heart events too. You trigger them by
entering a certain area at a certain time. These cinemas don't involve any
other interaction on your part. Make sure that you keep track of which events
you've triggered. There is no visible way to tell which heart level your
rival's love is at. These events are also triggered at four specific levels,
but they are slightly different than the ones for your Heart Events. These
levels are:
Black >> Blue >> Green >> Orange
*NOTE! The Green Rival Event can ONLY be triggered in the second year or
later. The Orange Rival Event can ONLY be triggered in the fourth
year or later.
The fate of your rivals' relationships rests in your hands. They will not
marry unless you trigger their Rival Heart events. You will not be able to
trigger a rival's heart event if the subject likes you better than your rival.
For example, in FoMT, let's say you wanted to see Karen and Rick's Green Heart
event. You won't be able to trigger it if she has a Yellow (or higher) heart
for you. You would have to lower her heart back down to Green or below.
Thankfully, this stipulation does not go both ways. You can safely view
the Rival Heart events before triggering your own, even if the object of your
affections has a Black Heart for you. You can also raise the hearts of each
bachelorette/bachelor without affecting the other bachelorettes/bachelors. The
only thing is that you must NOT trigger your rival's Orange Heart event. Once
you trigger a rival's Orange Heart event, the two will marry in seven days.
If the wedding will fall on a holiday, it will instead occur on the next
regular day following that holiday. Only trigger that event if you want them
to get married.
---------------------------------------
III.03. The Legend Of The Blue Feather
---------------------------------------
*NOTE! This story is NOT official, nor is it mine. It is a wonderful,
original tale woven by Freyashawk (see Section XI.02) to explain
the tradition. She has graciously allowed me to use this story in
my guide. But I must reiterate that, no matter how much I wish it
was, this story is neither mine nor canon.
"In the first days of mankind, when people were learning about life in all
its complexities and splendour, there was a very shy boy named Kuko. He was
very much in love with the daughter of the chief of his tribe, but was too shy
to say anything to her. Instead, he would leave a white flower at her door each
morning and then walk past her house later to see if his gift had been
accepted.
The White Flower was a rare and beautiful blossom that could be found only
at the top of the highest mountain. Each evening, Kuko would climb the mountain
to search for the elusive flower and he would not return to his village without
it. To him, it represented the rare emotion that had blossomed in his own
heart. Every day, his heart rose when he saw that the flower no longer lay on
the doorstep. He imagined his beloved would understand that her own beauty was
reflected in the exquisite loveliness of the White Flower.
Then one day, a delegation of strangers came to the village. They brought
an offering of marriage from the son of a neighbouring chieftain. Donkeys laden
with gold, chests filled with precious gems and baskets filled with grains,
vegetables and fruit accompanied the proposal of marriage.
Poor Kuko! His heart sank when he saw the ostentatious procession and
heard the admiring exclamations of the villagers. All he had to offer was the
simple White Flower. In fact, as the delegation entered the home of the village
chieftain, their heavy boots trampled Kuko's offering into the dust. Kuko
could not imagine that the girl would prefer him to the son of a wealthy chief.
He was a poor shepherd boy who owned only a couple of sheep and two chickens
who never had laid a single golden egg.
In despair that evening, he went to the Spring of the Goddess to think. It
was a favourite spot of his, a place he often visited when life appeared
darkest. According to legend, the Harvest Goddess lived in the lake and granted
the wishes of deserving individuals who sought her aid. Kuko imagined the
Goddess to be as compassionate as she would be beautiful, and he poured his
heart out to her in the twilight, speaking of his dreams and hopes, his
disappointments and his struggles. Ordinarily rather inarticulate and shy, Kuko
found he was able to speak freely to the Goddess he could not see but whom he
sensed to be ever-present in the sparkling waters of the Spring.
That evening, when he finally fell silent, he was surprised by the
appearance of an exquisite blue bird flying across the sky. The bird circled
overhead three times, then dropped a feather into his lap. The feather was long
and iridescent, and Kuko never had beheld anything quite as beautiful. Kuko
was startled, but even more astonished when the bird actually spoke to him.
'I am the Namimoto bird, who makes her nest in the very lap of the
Goddess,' the bird sang. 'She bids me tell you to take heart. Give this Blue
Feather to the girl you love and if her heart beats true for you, she will be
yours.'
Kuko bowed low to the sacred bird, thanking her for the rare gift. He then
returned to the village, feather in hand, and laid it upon the doorstep of his
beloved. He could not sleep, however, and was at her door at dawn to see if
the feather remained where he had left it.
Much to his joy, the feather was gone!
As he stood there, the chief of the village, his daughter and the entire
delegation of strangers came out of the house, and the village crier began to
ring the bell, calling the villager to a meeting. All the villagers
congregated in the Square, pressing forward to hear the news. Poor Kuko was
afraid suddenly that it would be an announcement that the Chief's daughter had
agreed to accept the offer of marriage from the neighbouring Chief's son.
Instead, he beheld his lady love stepping forward with the Blue Feather
braided into her golden hair. In a clear voice, she declared:
'I will marry only the man who can tell me where the bird to which this
feather belongs lives.'
Her father then spoke: 'Three days from now, we will have another meeting
and at that time, we will hear the answer to my daughter's question.'
Kuko realized that the Chief intended to give the neighbouring Chief's son
a chance to discover the answer to the girl's question. The next three days
passed far too slowly, therefore, for poor Kuko, who knew the answer himself,
but did not know if his rival would be able to stand forth to give the correct
answer as well.
After three days had passed, the bells rang. out again and the villagers
collected in the Square. The delegation returned and this time, the
neighbouring Chief's son was with them. Much to Kuko's consternation, he was a
handsome lad, but with arrogance stamped in his features. His bearing moreover
denoted one accustomed to having his own way in everything. Kuko's rival
stepped forward then, as if he and he alone had the right to speak first.
He declared loudly, 'Here is my answer to your question: I have sent men
to every corner of our land, and no one has seen a bird with feathers like
this. I therefore declare with confidence that the bird is foreign to these
parts, and must be from a land very faraway.'
'Yes!' agreed the Chief happily, 'That must be so. We have our answer
here.'
'And yet,' said the girl, 'That is no answer at all. It does not tell me
where to find the bird.'
Kuko stepped forward then. Much to his surprise, when he spoke, he did not
stutter as usual. His voice was firm and melodious as he said, 'I have seen the
bird you seek. This bird will not be found anywhere in our land or in any
other, for she makes her nest in the very lap of the Goddess. She is the
Namimoto bird, favoured by the Harvest Goddess above all others.'
The villagers were amazed, not only by Kuko's words but by his
transformation into a confident young man who had neither hesitation nor fear.
'How do you know this?' the Chief demanded with a frown.
'The bird gave me the Blue Feather,' said Kuko. 'It is a symbol of true
love, for the man who offers this feather to a girl declares: 'My heart flies
to you, even as a bird flies to its nest. I wish to dwell in your heart
forever.' That is the message of the Blue Feather and that is why I offer it
to your daughter. I am your humble servant, sir, but my heart has the highest
of aspirations, to belong to your daughter forever.
Every one was captivated by the boy's words and even the Chief could not
maintain his stern disapproval, although the thought of losing all the
advantages that an alliance with the neighbouring Chief would have provided was
disappointing. Even so, he loved his daughter and her happiness was more
important than riches. The Chief's daughter looked at the son of the
neighbouring Chief, then at Kuko.
'I always loved you,' she told the young shepherd. 'Each morning, I would
watch from my window as you brought a beautiful White Flower to my door. I
always hoped you would speak to me one day of your love.'
She took his hand then in her own and announced, 'I accept your Blue
Feather and your heart. From this day forward, let the Blue Feather be a sign
of eternal love for every man and woman who wishes to marry.'
And so it came to pass that the 'Blue Feather' became the symbol of love
and accompanied every proposal of marriage through all the centuries."
----------------------------
III.04. Marriage And Beyond
----------------------------
When you've gotten a bachelorette/bachelor to Orange Heart level, the Blue
Feather will be available for sale (1,000 G) at the Supermarket. Traditionally
in Mineral Town, the Blue Feather is given to your love as a marriage proposal.
If s/he accepts, you will marry seven days from that date. If the wedding will
fall on a holiday, it will instead occur on the next regular day following that
holiday.
The Blue Feather is considered a 'tool' rather than an 'item', and will be
stored in the 'Tools' section of your rucksack or in your Tool box. But just
because you have the Blue Feather doesn't mean your proposal will be
accepted. Your love can, and will, turn you down if you haven't met all the
marriage requirements. In order to marry, you must first:
-- Have your love at Red Heart level.
-- Propose using the Blue Feather.
-- View each of your love's four heart events in order.
-- Own all items sold from the TV Shopping Network.
-- Have the largest (final) house upgrade.
-- Being friends with your love's relatives is NOT a requirement, but it will
boost your chances of being accepted on the first try.
*NOTE! After you get married, the game credits roll and become one of
your archived letters. This is NOT the end of the game! It's
annoying to sit through, but when the credits are finished, the
game will continue normally.
After the wedding, your spouse will move into your home and ask if they
can call you by a nickname. This includes Kai, who will move to Mineral Town
and be available during all seasons. The Gourmet, Harvest Goddess, and Kappa
are exceptions. They will not move in with you. You will also be given the
option to allow your love to continue working or become a stay-at-home spouse.
Having a housewife/husband is completely a matter of personal choice. They
don't actually do anything or help on the farm if they stay home. They will
constantly just pace alongside the dinner table. This option is also not
available for certain characters. Elli, Mary, and Won will not quit their
jobs after marriage.
Once you're married, the heart on the chests of the other
bachelorettes/bachelors will disappear and only your spouse's heart will remain.
Keep in mind that even though their hearts are invisible, they still have the
same amount of affection for you. If you plan to marry them off, you will need
to lower their heart levels back down if they are too high to trigger the rival
events.
Your spouse will also appear in your inventory alongside your dog and your
horse. Keeping your spouse's level consistently at Red Heart will keep them
happy and their love for you will grow. You will be able to see this on your
inventory screen. Your spouse has a maximum of ten hearts. There is no
divorce in this game, so you can't change spouses ever. If your spouse becomes
unhappy with you, and their heart level falls too low, s/he will just move out.
Talk to your love and give them a nice gift everyday to prevent this. If you
can maintain them at ten hearts, you will soon find yourself expecting a baby.
Pregnancy lasts about two seasons. If you are playing FoMT, your wife
will have a baby boy. If you are playing MoFo, you will give birth to a baby
girl. Your new baby will also appear in your inventory, which means that the
baby, as well, has a heart level. You can't pick up your baby, only give
her/him gifts and talk to her/him. Your baby will also only grow to toddler
stage. S/he will never grow any older and canNOT help on the farm. You will
only have one child.
Your spouse will usually bake a cake on a special occasion. Better make
sure you know if this occasion is her/his birthday, your birthday, or your
anniversary. S/he will get angry if you give the wrong answer. And if
you stay married for 50 years, your spouse will buy you a Mountain Cottage for
your anniversary! ^_^
--------------------------
III.05. The Other Couples
--------------------------
As stated previously, once you trigger a rival's Orange Heart event, the
two will marry in seven days. If the wedding will fall on a holiday, it will
instead occur on the next regular day following that holiday. If you're good
friends with your rival, you will be invited to the wedding. First thing in
the morning, on the day of the wedding, your rival will be waiting outside your
door to invite you. You automatically accept, view a cinema of the wedding,
and wake up the next morning.
If you aren't invited to the wedding, you can still view it by going in
the church on the wedding day anytime between 6AM and 10PM. Carter will ask
you if you want to join in the festivities. If you accept, you will view a
cinema of the wedding and wake up the next morning. If you decline, you will
be able to talk to everyone in the church. Your rival will even give you a
poor excuse for not inviting you.
After their wedding, the other couple may move in with each other, or
change their schedules slightly. Also, the couple will never have a child. If
Popuri and Kai get married, Popuri will leave with Kai and only be available
during the Summer.

Coming Eventually!

IV. "YOU COULD BE THE ONE"
(THE MAIN BACHELORETTES/BACHELORS)
=====================================
This section lists the ten main marriage candidates in Harvest Moon. In
FoMT, you can marry Ann, Elli, Karen, Mary, or Popuri. In MoFo, you can marry
Cliff, the Doctor, Gray, Kai, or Rick. You canNOT get married to a character
of the same gender. However, in MoFo, you can trigger each girl's Black Heart
event, which is considered a bonus "friendship" event.
*NOTE! I only have the points values for the girls' heart events (thanks
to Samurai Goroh and The King Of This Game), so if anyone has the
values for the boys' events, please e-mail me! ^_^
