Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun - A Long-lasting, Enjoyable Experience

Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun, is, like the title suggests, the fourth installment to the Mega Man Battle Network series, which is created by Capcom. The games take place in a futuristic environment, where the lives of most everyone is heavily influenced by the Internet and the NetNavi which allows them to connect to the Internet and interact with others. A NetNavi, in essence, is an avatar stored in a portable mini-computer, most commonly referred to as a PET (PErsonal Terminal), in which they can communicate with the owner of the PET, called an "Operator." Although usually used for menial tasks, many Operators use their NetNavi to host NetBattles, in which two NetNavis battle through the use of Battle Chips, small cards containing weapon data to be transferred to their NetNavi once inserted into the PET. These NetBattles provide entertainment for many, and in Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun, as well as its counter-part, Mega Man Battle Network 4: Blue Moon, a series of NetBattle tournaments are held to determine the best NetBattler in all of Electopia.

The Mega Man Battle Network series follows the events of Lan Hikari and his trustworthy NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE. The two are inseparable and are the best NetBattlers in all of ACDC Town. They have saved Electopia several times before through the power of teamwork and perseverance. The bond these two protagonists share is envied by many, and loathed by just as many. Countless organizations (3 to be exact) have attempted to gain control over Electopia before, only to be thwarted by Lan and his NetNavi. Because of this, the two have gained quite a reputation and have grown to be feared by criminals nation-wide. However, this does not stop new organizations from rising up and trying to gain control again. In the Mega Man Battle Network 4 games, a dark organization going by the name of Nebula slowly gains power, and, unbeknownst to anyone, it is up to Lan and MegaMan to once again stop this evil force. But Nebula is not the only problem our heroes face...

Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun starts off with the microwave being unable to function properly, and because of this, Lan sends MegaMan.EXE to the Internet to purchase a patch to repair the microwave. He does just that, and then the Hikari family enjoys a nice breakfast. Soon afterward, Lan's and his father go to ElecTown to shop for electronics. While there, Lan's old man gets called back to work, leaving Lan with his friends, Mayl and Yai, for the evening. While at ElecTown, Lan's catches word of a NetBattle tournament being hosted at the nearby DenCity's DenDome, which will have several of the local NetBattlers. Naturally, Lan enters without a second thought. He and MegaMan.EXE must defeat three other NetNavis to continue to the Eagle Tournament, which will have people from all around Electopia, and ultimately the Red Sun Tournament, which will have NetBattlers from all around the world.

Meanwhile, Electopia's NAXA locates a meteor, heading straight toward the earth. The NAXA scientists, Lan's father being one of them, think of ways to protect the world from the meteor, but no idea passes. Fortunately, the infamous Dr. Regal of Nation X appears to assist the team. Although reluctant at first, the other scientists accept Dr. Regal and his ideas to stop the meteor. They need as much help as they can get for the good of mankind.

However, before completing the DenCity tournament, Lan and his NetNavi encounter ShadeMan.EXE, an evil NetNavi powered by Dark Chips, dark Battle Chips produced by Nebula that cause the corruption of a NetNavi's body and soul. ShadeMan kidnaps Roll, Mayl's NetNavi, and forces MegaMan to fight for the life of Roll. Although unable to inflict any damage on ShadeMan, the mysterious NetNavi retreats, dropping one of his Dark Chips in the process. Without knowing what the Dark Chip was, MegaMan retrieves it, and after rescuing Roll the two heroes continue to the DenCity tournament.

Throughout the course of the game, the Dark Chip's evil power spreads inside of MegaMan, resulting in many issues. Now Lan and MegaMan do not only have to deal with their tournaments, but the evil influences of Nebula and the Dark Chip, as well.

A nice, solid plot that follows a logical order. Although a simple case of good versus evil, the story takes many turns and provides a fun experience for all.
Nothing short of greatness, this game's graphics are aesthetically pleasing and provide for excellent character design.
The music in this game is impressive, but there is not a very wide selection of it. There are plenty of sound effects, but not all of them are that great.
The battle system in the whole Battle Network series is perfected, and is quite entertaining. Although perhaps redundant after long times of playing, it is otherwise great.
10Lasting Appeal
Considering you have to play through the game three times to get the whole experience (to play against everyone in the tournaments), this game can last for months, and maybe even years.
