I will try and be as spoiler-free as possible, but I will probably advise you when to catch certain pokémon when there's a gym up ahead or something. I have designed this guide so you can use the Ctrl + F function to find things easier (hold down the Ctrl key and press F). To use it, type in the box the code that appears next to every page's title. (E.G. For [001] you type '[001]'.) NOTE: Parts of this guide are likely to change in different versions, and things are likely to be added to the contents. =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 : Read Before Playing : [0010] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== - Controls [001A0] You're likely to know the controls already, and they're pretty easy to figure out. But for those who don't: D Pad: Is used to move around, navigate selections. A Button: Used to confirm selections, used to examine things (E.G. Signs), talk to people (stand next to someone, face them and press A), pick up items, use TM/HMs automatically. B Button: Can sometimes be used to cancel selections, stop pokémon evolving, has other functions only available later in the game.... START Button: Displays the in-game menu. SELECT: Can be used to quickly select an item (a registered item). R Button: May have a function depending on the BUTTON MODE selection.(See The In-game Menu) L Button: Can be set to various different functions. (See The In-game Menu, [001C0]) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Registering Items [001B0] Item registration was introduced in the Gold/Silver versions of the game. You can set an item to select button so you can instantly use it without going through the backpack. NOTE: It only works with KEY items. To do this, go into the BAG from the menu and use the D Pad to switch to KEY ITEMS. From there select the item you want and select REGISTER. Now, you'll be able to press the SELECT button when your out in field to instantly use the registered item, how handy. I would recommend registering the bike or a fishing rod, but it's up to you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - The In-game Menu - [001C0] You can press the START button to acces this menu. On it, you'll find various things to go on. - Pokédex [001C1] NOTE: The pokédex is obtained early on in the game. The pokédex is the hi-tech piece of kit that the Professor gives you near the begining of the game. It is used to record data on the pokémon you, the trainer , are supposed to catch. You can go on it to look at the information about pokémon you won, if you like. - Pokémon [001C2] NOTE: This is only available after you get your first pokémon. This is where you can view the battle information about your pokémon (moves, levels, exp, etc). Select the desired pokémon and you will be presented with four or more options. SUMMARY Summary is the one that lets you see the information about the pokémon. On the POKéMON INFO screen you can see your pokémon's abilty, it's nature, type(s), dex number, level and where you caught it. On the POKéMON SKILLS screen you can view the stats of your pokémon, it's held item, any ribbons it has and it's exp points. BATTLE MOVES shows you your pokémon's attacks. If you press the A button you can view detailed info about the moves and rearrange them by using the A and directional buttons. CONTEST MOVES is basically the same as the previous one but show the moves' efftect in contests. SWITCH Switch lets you change the order of your pokémon so you can change who is sent out first, very useful if you know who your up against and know the type advantages/disadvantages. ITEM Item lets you give items to and remove them from your pokémon. You can let a pokémon hold ANY item but only some have an effect. (See the Held Items section.) CANCEL Cancel does exactly what it says, closes the mini menu and returns to showing you just the party. OTHER The extra options you may have are options to use a pokémon's HM moves outside of battle. Some normal moves can also be used this way. (E.G. Softboiled) - Bag [001C3] BAG lets you view items that you have, use them, and throw them away. You can also give your items to pokémon from here. - Pokénav [001C4] NOTE: The Pokénav is obtianed as you progress through the game. Ahh, the Pokénav. A trainer's best friend. (remember the Pokégear from G/S? this is like that, but better) The Pokénav, as you will discover, is a vital tool for any trainer. Lets go over it: HOENN MAP This option lets you view the world map, useful for finding out where you are. Zoom in with the A button to see detailed info on a town/city. Cool! CONDITION Condition lets you see the qualties your pokémon have in terms of contests. NOTE: This will be covered in greater detail in a later version. MATCH CALL This is why the pokénav will prove invaluable to you. If you have ever played Leafgreen/Firered, it's a bit like the VS. seeker but unfortunately not as good. It is also like the Trainers Eye or whatever it was called in Ruby/ Sapphire. The people with a pokéball next to their name will battle with you. Even gymleaders will want a rematch! RIBBONS NOTE: This will be covered in greater detail in a later version. - Name [001C5] Name? No, it's whatever you called yourself. Here's where you check your own information like money, play time, badges, etc. You can also view your trainer card by pressing the A button on this screen. - Save [001C6] The save option lets you save the game. Simple as that. NOTE: It is STRONGLY recommeded that you save quite a lot during the game and before every major battle (gym leader, rival, elite 4, etc). - Option [001C7] Option is where you customise your settings: TEXT SPEED Set the text speed to whatever you like. (I have it on FAST) BATTLE SCENE Choose whether or not to show the animations for the attacks. If your in a hurry, set it to OFF to not see the animations. BATTLE STYLE SHIFT = You can choose to switch pokémon after you faint one of the opponents. SET = You cannot switch pokémon after you faint one of the opponents. ( You can still select POKéMON on the battle menu to switch on your turn.) SOUND Switch between mono and stereo sound. BUTTON MODE Sets the function of the L button NORMAL = The L button has no function LR = Use the L and R buttons to switch between screens on the SUMMARY. L = A = The L button has all of the functions of the A button. (The A button will still work as well] FRAME Select what frame design you want. There are 20 to choose from! - Exit [001C8] Exits the menu. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Battling [001D] --------------- Single Battles: --------------- Single battles are the normal battles you will have with wild pokémon and many other trainers. Its 1 v 1 and the first pokémon on your list (the one on the left with the enlarged details)is the one that is sent out first ------------------------ Double Battles || [001D1] ------------------------- Double battles are fought on two condtions. 1: You have two usable pokémon that are able to battle. 2: Two trainers spot you at the same time. You can have a double battle with specific kinds of trainers, they are: Twins, Young Couple, TV Crew and possibly some others. In Emerald, there are many situations where you can engage two different trainers in a double battle. If the are two trainers facing each other at any time, you can run in between them and they both will challenge you. There are some attacks that can hit both opponents in double battles. These include, but are not limited to: -Surf -Muddy Water -Razor Leaf -Tail Whip -Growl -Hyper Voice There are also some attacks that can hit everybody(except the user). These include, but are not limited to: -Earthquake -Explosion -Self Destruct -Perish Song -------------------------- The Battle Menu || [001D2] -------------------------- The battle menu is the one that you see when your battling. You have four options: FIGHT Select an attack to use. You can rearrange the attacks here by using the SELECT button. BAG Select and item to use, if you want to. POKéMON Switch out a different pokémon. RUN RUUUUNNN!! (Flee from battle) NOTE: RUN cannot be used during a trainer battle or wild battles if the opponent has the Arena Trap or Shadow Tag ability unless you have the Run Away ability. -------------------------------------- Type Resistance/Weakness || [001D3] -------------------------------------- There are a total of 17 types in Pokémon Emerald. Here is a table that shows there resistances, weaknesses and immunities: (resistance is which types are "not very effective", weakness is which types are "super effective" against and immunities are which types do not effect it). ---------------------------------------------------------------[] []TYPE: []RESISTANCE(S): []WEAKNESS(ES):[] IMMUNITIES:|| ===============================================================|| ||Normal ||N/A || Fighting ||Ghost || []------------[]----------------- []-------------[]------------[] ||Grass ||Electric ||Fire ||N/A || || ||Water ||Ice || || || ||Ground ||Flying || || || ||Grass ||Bug || || || || ||Poison || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Fire ||Fire ||Water ||N/A || || ||Ice ||Rock || || || ||Bug ||Ground || || || ||Grass ||Bug || || || ||Steel ||Poison || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Water ||Fire ||Eelectric ||N/A || || ||Ice ||Grass || || || ||Water || || || || ||Steel || || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Ground ||Rock ||Water ||N/A || || ||Poison ||Grass || || || || ||Ice || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Rock ||Normal ||Water ||N/A || || ||Flying ||Ice || || || ||Fire ||Grass || || || || ||Fighting || || || || ||Steel || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Ghost ||Bug ||Ghost ||Fighting || || ||Posion ||Dark ||Normal || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Fighting ||Rock ||Psychic ||N/A || || ||Dark ||Flying || || || ||Ground || || || || ||Grass || || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Steel ||Grass ||Fire ||Poison || || ||Psychic ||Fighting || || || ||Ghost ||Ground || || || ||Dark || || || || ||Rock || || || || ||Bug || || || || ||Dragon || || || || ||Normal || || || || ||Steel || || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Bug ||Fighting ||Fire ||N/A || || ||Ground ||Rock || || || ||Grass ||Flying || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Posion ||Fighting ||Ground || || || ||Bug ||Psychich || || || || ||Flying || || || || ||Bug || || || || ||Poison || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Flying ||Grass ||Electric ||Ground || || ||Bug ||Ice || || || ||Fighting ||Rock || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Dark ||Ghost ||Fighting ||Psychic || || ||Dark ||Bug || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Ice ||Ice ||Fire ||N/A || || ||Water ||Fightng || || || ||Ground ||Steel || || || ||Grass ||Rock || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Dragon ||Fire ||Dragon ||N/A || || ||Water ||Ice || || || ||Electri || || || || ||Grass || || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Psychic ||Psychic ||Dark ||N/A || || ||Fighting ||Ghost || || || || ||Bug || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] ||Electric ||Flying ||Ground ||N/A || || ||Electric || || || || ||Steel || || || []------------[]------------------[]-------------[]------------[] NOTE: Poison types cannot become poisoned and fire types cannot be burned. -------------------------- Weather Effects || [001D4] -------------------------- In Pokémon Emerald there are four weather conditions that can affect the battle, these conditions are: -Sunshine -Rain -Hail -Sandstorm Sunshine: Sunshine is induced by a pokémon using the Sunny Day move or if Groudon is sent out because of its Drought ability. Sunny Day makes fire attacks more powerful and Solarbeam does not have to be charged up during this weather condition. Sunshine produced by Sunny Day lasts for five turns. NOTE: Drought creates a permanent sunshine effect until another weather is induced. Rain: Rainfall is induced by a pokémon using the Rain Dance move or if Kyogre is sent out because if its Drizzle ability. Rain also occurs naturally in some parts of the map. Rain boosts the power of water type moves and also makes Thunder 100% accurate. Rainfall also decereases the power of fire type moves. Pokémon with the Rain Dish ability will recover 1/16 of their max. HP during rainfall each turn. NOTE: Drizzle creates a permanent rain effect until another weather is induced. Hail: Hail is induced by a pokémon using the Hail move. It creates a hailstorm that will damage non-ice type pokémon every turn. Hail lasts for five turns. Hail also gives Blizzard the advantage of 100% accuracy, regardless of any evasion/accuracy stat changes. Sandstorm: A sandstorm is created when a pokémon uses the Sandstorm move or by Tyranitar's Sand Stream ability. A sandstorm also occurs naturally in the Desert. Sandstorm will damage a pokémon every turn unless it is ground, rock or steel type or unless it has the Sand Veil ability. NOTE: Sand Stream creates a permanent sandstorm effect until another weather is induced. ---------------------------- Types of Pokéball || [001D5] ---------------------------- There are many different kinds of pokéball in Pokémon Emerald, here is a list of them: Pokéball: The most basic ball for catching pokémon. Works best for weaker pokémon. Location: Every pokémart. Great Ball: Has a higher success rate than the pokéball. Location: Many pokémarts. Ultra Ball: Has an even higher success rate than the great ball. Location: Some later pokémarts. Premier Ball: Has the same qualities as a pokéball but is different in appearence. Location: Buy 10 pokéballs at a pokémart to receive one of these. Timer Ball: The success rate of this pokéball increases every 10 turns used in a battle. Location: Rustboro pokémart, Trick House. Repeat Ball: Works best for pokémon that are already owned. Location: Rustboro pokémart Master Ball: The best pokéball for catching pokémon. It has a 100% chance of catching any pokémon. Location: Team Aqua Hideout Luxury Ball: The same success rate of a pokéball but makes it easier for the caught pokémon to like you. Location: Obtained after winning pokémon contests. Safari Ball: Has a higher success rate than the pokéball. Is used in the Safari Zone. Location: Safari Zone. Net Ball: Has a high success rate of catching water or bug type pokémon. Location: Mossdeep City. Nest Ball: This pokéball's success rate is higher as the wild pokémon's level gets lower. Location: Verdanturf Town. Dive Ball: Has a high success rate of catching pokémon underwater. Location: Mossdeep City. --------------------------- Kinds of Attacks || [001D6] --------------------------- In Pokémon Emerald, attacks are divided into two categories: special and physical. Whether an attack is special or physical depends on what type it is. SPECIAL ATTACK TYPES: Fire Water Grass Psychic Dark Ice Dragon Electric PHYSICAL ATTACK TYPES: Fighting Normal Ghost Rock Ground Bug Steel Poison Flying Before the user's type, oppenent's type and type effectiveness, special attacks do damage based on the SP.ATTACK stat. Likewise, physical attacks do damage based on the ATTACK stat. Defence from special attacks is gauged by your SP.DEFENSE stat and for physical attacks it's DEFENSE. -------------------------------- Pokémon Stats || [001D7] -------------------------------- Pokémon have six stats that determine how strong they are. There are also accuracy and evasion but they only appear durinng battle. ATTACK: This plays a part in determining the damage of physical attacks. During battle, this stat can be lowered by: charm, growl, etc. ATTACK can be increased by: Swords Dance, Bulk-Up, Dragon Dance, etc. The abilities that can heighten attack are Huge Power and Pure Power. ATTACK can be lowered by a foe's Intimidate. You can increase a pokémon's base ATTACK using the item Protien. DEFENCE This plays a part in determining the defence of physical attacks. During battle, this stat can be lowered by: leer, tail whip, etc. DEFENCE can be increased by: Harden, Bulk-Up, Iron Defense, Cosmic Power, etc. You can increase a pokémon's base DEFENSE using the item Iron. SP.ATTACK This plays a part in determining the damage of special attacks. SP.ATTACK can be increased by: Calm Mind, Tail Glow, Growth, etc. This stat can be decreased by using Overheat. You can use the item Calcium to increase the base SP.ATTACK stat. SP.DEFENCE This plays a part in determining the defense of special attacks. SP.DEFENCE can be increased by: Calm Mind, Cosmic Power, Growth, etc. This stat can be decreased by: Fake Tears, etc. You can use the item Zinc to increase the base SP.ATTACK stat. SPEED This stat determines whether or not your pokémon will go first in a battle (unless moves like Quick Attack or Exetreme Speed are used). SPEED also helps you to escape from wild battles. If both pokémon use something like Quick Attack at the same time, the fastest pokémon will go first. SPEED can be incresed by using Agility or by Ninjask's Speed Boost ability. You can increase a pokémon's base SPEED by using the item Carbos. HP HP (Hit Points) determines how much damage a pokémon can take. Average HP for a pokémon is about 300-350 at level 100. Low HP is around 250 and below. High HP for a pokémon at level 100 is 400 and above. Blissey, the evolved form of Chansey, has the highest base HP (255) and can max out at over 700. Base HP is increased using the item HP Up. In battle, HP is lowered when you pokémon receives damage. You can restore your HP by using items like potions or use moves like recover or absorb. BASE STATS Base stats are what determine how a pokémon's stat will grow. There is a base stat for every stat the pokémon has. Pokémon will appear weaker in some areas than others. For example, Magikarp is so weak because it has a base ATTACK of 10. Slaking, on the other hand, has a base ATTACK stat of 160, making it very strong. Legendary pokémon usually have all high base stats which makes them appear better than regular pokémon. For example, Mewtwo has a base SP.ATTACK of 154 and the stat maxes out at 447. If a pokémon has low base stats (50 and below) it will increase those stats by 1-2, maybe 3, each level it gains. Medium base stats (50-80)will grow at 1-3 usually and sometimes a 4 each level. High base stats (90+) will grow at 2-4 each level and sometimes 5. Very high base stats are those that exceed 110. Many legendary pokémon have these kind of stats, they will grow at 4-6 points per level and can sometimes reach up to 8 points per level. For example, Snorlax has a base HP of 160 it maxes out at 524. Its HP can often increase by 6 or 8 every level. NOTE: The above paragraph is based on personal experience and may not be 100% accurate but it is close. Before calculating what a pokémon's stats are going to be, you need to consider its nature and the EVs it has received. See the EVs section for more information. Max (Maximum) stats are obtained when a pokémon reaches level 100. You cannot increase the stats at this level. -------------- EVs || [001D8] -------------- EVs or Effort Values are points that your pokémon get when they beat certain other pokémon. EVs increase the amount a pokémon's stat grows by each level and ulitmately make it stronger in the desired areas. There are effort values for each stat. You can have a total of 510 effort points on your pokémon. An individual stat can have 255 at the most. Therefore, if you wanted to, you could max out two stats and then have the minumum stat of all the other stats. There are two ways you can get EVs: -Battling certain pokémon -Using vitamins(Protien,Iron,Carbos,Calcium,Zinc,HP Up) The Macho Brace item will double the EV points you receive in battle. Pokémon can also get EVs if they are holding the Exp. Share. Using Vitamins on your pokémon is the quickest way to boost a pokémon's EV count. Each vitamin will increase the effort value of its respective stat by 10. You can use a maximum of 10 vitamins on a stat. So, the most you can get on one stat through vitamins is 100 (10*10 = 100). As there are six stats but only 510 points, you can max out 4/5. As recommended by Serebii.net(The very best resource for everything Pokémon) these are the pokémon you should fight to get EVs: ATTACK ---- Carvanha DEFENCE---- Sandshrew SP.ATTACK----Spinda SP.DEFENCE----Tentacool SPEED----Zubat HP----Whismur If this section has completely confused you beyond help or is not in enough detail, you can go to Serebii.net's EV guide at http://serebii.net/pokedex-rs/ev.shtml Or go on Kenshin075's EV guide on gamefaqs. ----------------------- Battle Terms || [001D9] ----------------------- For beginners or people who want to know what the heck I'm talking about when I'm describing battling, here are a list of terms and their meanings: OHKO. OHKO or One-Hit KO. (KO = Knock Out) Means when you manage to faint(Reduce the targets HP to 0) in one hit/attack. There are OHKO moves such as Horn Drill and sheer Cold that will always do this and you get the message: "It's a one-hit KO!" Critical Hit. A critical hit is when an attack 'hits the weak spot' and causes much more damage than an attack would normally. Moves such as Slash have a high critical hit ratio meaning they will land critical hits more often. You can increase your critical hit ratio using the Dire Hit item or doing Focus Energy The messege for increasing the ratio is "?????'s getting pumped!" When you land a critical hit, you will get the message: "It's a critical hit!". Super Effective: A super effective hit is when you use an attack whose type works well against the opponent. You'll know when something's super effective because the sound is different and you'll get the message: "It's super effective!". Not Very Effective: A not very effective hit is when you use an attack whose type is not good against the opponent. You'll know when something's super effective because the sound is different and you'll get the message: "It's not very effective!". Immune: If something is immune to another type, any of that type's attacks will have no effect on the pokémon. You'll know when something is ineffetive because you'll get the message: "It didn't effect ??????!" Level: Level, lvl or Lvl is the pokémons experience level. Levels range from level 2-100. Pokémon learn new moves and may evolve as their level becomes higher. They will also become stronger. Pokémon that have just hatched from eggs will be at level 5. ---------------------------- Status Conditions || [001D10] ---------------------------- Status conditions can be inflicted on your pokémon during battle. Status conditions that are 'Special Conditions' are called by me 'status problems' Here they are: STATUS PROBLEMS: These conditions stay with your pokémon untill they are cured at a Pokémon Centre or by one of the mentioned items/ways of recovery. Sleep: Effect: Pokémon cannot attack unless it uses Snore or Sleep Talk. Induced by: Hypnosis, Sleep Powder, Spore, Grass Whistle, Rest, etc. Cured by: Full Heal, Awakening, Chesto Berry, Blue Flute. Notes: Sleep makes wild pokémon easier to catch, pokémon with Early Bird ability will awake from Rest in one turn, pokémon can wake up naturally. The attacks Dream Eater and Nightmare can only be used on a sleeping pokémon. Poison: Effect: Pokémon is steadily damaged each turn. Induced by: Poison Gas, Toxic. Cured By: Full Heal, Antidote, Pecha Berry. Notes: If you have been poisoned with Toxic, the damage will increase every turn. Many poison type attacks have a chance of poisoning you. Paralysis: Effect: Pokémon not be able to attack and SPEED is greatly reduced. Induced by: Thunder Wave, Stun Spore. Cured By: Full Heal, Parlyze Heal, Cheri Berry. Notes: Many electric attacks have a chance of paralysing you. Zap Cannon has a 100% chance of paralysing you if it does not KO your pokémon. Burn: Effect: Pokémon is steadily damaged each turn and ATTACK is greatly reduced. Induced by: Will-O-Wisp. Cured by: Full Heal, Burn Heal, Rawst Berry. Notes: Many fire attacks have a chance of burning you. Frozen: Effect:Pokémon cannot attack. Induced by: Many ice attacks Cured by: Full Heal, Ice Heal, Aspear Berry. Notes: Pokémon may thaw out naturally and you can also use Flame Wheel or Sacred Fire to melt the ice. OTHER CONDITIONS Other conditions can be inflicted on your pokémon but the following are not permanent(they will be gone after battle or when you switch pokémon.) Confusion: Effect: Pokémon may attack itself. Induced By: Supersonic, Confuse Ray, Teeter Dance, Swagger. Cured By: Full Heal, Persim Berry, Yellow Flute. Notes: The amount of damage done by a pokémon attacking itself is determined by its ATTACK stat. Attracttion: Effect: Pokémon becomes attracted to the opponent and may not be able to attack it. Induced By: Attract, Charm ability. Cured By: Red Flute, (maybe Full Heal), fainting the pokémon that used attract. Notes: Only pokémon of opposite genders can be attracted. Curse Effect: Pokémon inflicted with a curse will be damaged by 1/4 of its max. HP every turn. Induced by: Curse Cured By: Switching out/Ending the battle. Notes: There is not item to cure curse. Seeded: Effect: Pokémon that have been seeded will have some of their HP drained every turn. Induced by: Leech Seed. Cured by: Switcing Out/Ending the battle, (Does Rapid Spin cure it?) Notes: --- Encored: Effect: You can have to use the same move that you did on the turn that you got an encore. Induced by: Encore Cured By: If your encored pokémon faints. Notes: During an encore, you cannot choose anything from the battle menu so your'e stuck until the battle ends. Tormented: Effect: Pokémon cannot use them same move twice in a row. Induced by: Torment Cured by: If your tormented pokémon faints. Notes: --- Taunted: Effect Pokémon can only use attacks that do damage. Induced by: Taunt Cured by: If your taunted pokémon or the taunter faints. Notes: Useful for catching Abra. []------------------[]--------[] ||Pokémon Abilities || [001E0]|| []------------------[]--------[] Basically, since Ruby/Sapphire, pokémon have abilities which may help them in battle. In Emerald, certain abilities have an effect OUTSIDE of battle!. Some pokémon may have different abilities to each other. (E.G. Magnemite can have either Sturdy or Magnet Pull).
