VERSION HISTORY ---------------------- 1.03: IGN has asked to use this guide. They've been added to the list. 1.02: Fixed two typos, removed step 229 because it sucked, and made it clear in the credits that I didn't like this game. : ) 1.01: Someone has mailed me with a question. I've posted it in "Questions and Answers." Also, neoseeker.com has asked permission to use this guide, so I've created a new section about posting this FAQ. Check it out if you're interested. 1.00: Oh, yeah!! Looks like I was farther than I thought! :) Anyway, I've finished the game and the walkthrough. Now, all that's left is other little things in the guide.... 0.50: Since I've gotten half the items, I must assume I'm about halfway through the game. I've added some more to the walkthrough and I've also reformatted the guide for gamefaqs.com. 0.25: Still working on the walkthrough; Finished parts two and three, wrote boss strategy for wasp. 0.01: Began FAQ. Did crappy ASCII art, started general tips. Finished part one of walkthrough. CONTENTS (Use Control+F and type in section names to get there quickly. GENERAL TIPS ---------------------- As with any other game, there are some things you'll want to keep in mind as you play the game. Here is a list of useful tips that apply to the whole game. ---------------------- 1: Never walk into water, or you'll drown and lose a life. 2: Chop every bush you find. I'll try to list all the bushes that have things in them, but I might miss something. 3: Don't save too often, or you might not have enough diamonds when you really need them. 4: Killing enemies can get you diamonds, one-ups, and hearts. 5: I occasionally suggest save points, but don't let it stop you from saving where you think you should. 6: In the sidescrolling parts, remember that you can climb some vines! 7: If you get the extra time item, don't use it outside of timed sidescrollers. You'll lose the item for nothing. WALKTHROUGH --------------- This is probably the reason you're looking at this FAQ, and it explains itself. ------------------------------------ WALKTHROUGH PART ONE: THE BEGINNING =================================== ITEMS: SWORD, SHAKRAM, HEARTS, HONEY, GLOVES ------------------------------------ 1: Talk to Salmoneus. 2: Go west off the screen to get to Bear's Territory. 3: Go south until you reach a bridge. 4: Go west of the bridge, being careful of water. 5: Get the sword in the bushes. 6: Chop the bushes and get a diamond. 7: Go north from the left pole on the bridge until you touch a tree-like brown thing :) 8: Chop the shrub to the left of this brown thing for a diamond. 9: Chop through big group of bushes near brown thing; get two diamonds. 10: Go north to the bridge and talk to Salmoneus. 11: Go north across the bridge to reach the Great Forest. 12: Exit west to get to the Bee Clearing. Take all the beehives for honey. I can't explain the position.... 17: By now you should have thirteen pots of honey and at least eight diamonds. 18: Go east and exit the Bee Clearing. 19: Go south to the Bear's Territory. 20: Chop through the big group of bushes and go as far west as you can. 21: Talk to the bear. If you have the honey equipped, he will let you pass. 22: Follow the path to the campsite. 23: Chop the umbrella-like thing on the left. 24: Chop the fire that appears to get the Shakram. 25: Talk to the people to find out that you need the magic gloves in the forest. 26: Go back through Bear's Territory to the Great Forest. 27: Follow the water east and north. Chop bush for hearts. 28: Go back to the entrance of the Great Forest. 29: Slightly northeast of the entrance, there is a bright tree. 30: Chop the bright tree and then the flower underneath it. 31: Take the Magic Gloves. 32: Go north to the maze. -------------------------------- WALKTHROUGH PART TWO: THE MAZE ============================== ITEMS: NONE -------------------------------- 33: Go as far northwest as possible without entering the hedges. In a mushroom is 3 diamonds. 34: In the maze there are several diamonds. I won't bother to list them, so chop everything. 35: Go east, then north. Chop two mushrooms and use the gloves to push a boulder down. 36: Go south a tiny bit and push the boulder on the right down. 37: Chop the mushroom. Go left, then up, and chop this mushroom too. 38: Push this boulder right and go up. 39: Push the next boulder all the way to the right and go up. 40: Chop two mushrooms and go up. Chop what's left for many diamonds. 41: There's nothing else on this path, go back to where step 37 was. 42: Go left and push the boulder two spaces to the left. Go up and chop two mushrooms. 43: Push the boulder on the left all the way to the left. 44: Follow the path, chopping everything. 45: Push the first boulder you come across two spaces down. 46: Push the boulder that is now underneath boulder #1 one space to the right. 47: Push boulder #1 up one space. Chop the mushroom to the left of boulder #3. 48: Walk diagonally northeast into the corner of boulder #3 and a mushroom. 49: While holding up and right, you can chop the mushroom through the boulder. 50: Push boulder #3 all the way to the right. 51: Go left again and chop the mushroom. Go up. 52: Follow the path and chop stuff. 53: Pull the boulder as far right as possible. Then pull it one space down. 54: Chop the flower. Push the left boulder down all the way and go right. 55: Push the next boulder three spaces to the right. Chop the mushrooms and go up. 56: Go west to the Fairie's Den. ------------------------------------- WALKTHROUGH PART THREE: THE FAIRIES AND THE WASP ===================================== ITEMS: CONCH SHELL, SALAMANDER SKIN BOOTS ------------------------------------- 57: You should probably save here. 58: Some fairies give you information. In the sub-steps for number 58, I'll tell the info, in a shorter form. 58a: "Our queen Lalala is held captive in the forest of stones. Help us." 58b: "If you find an object made of Salamander skin in the maze, you can cross the fire fields." 58c: "To summon the raft, play a tune on the pontoon." 58d: "I've heard there's a powerful healer, but with high rates. Save 50 diamonds if you need his help." 58e: "Save our princess (wasn't it a queen?) by killing all the monsters in the forest of stones." 59: If you're low on health, there is a shop here. You can buy half a heart for three diamonds. 60: There is a conch shell in a mushroom by the shop. 61: There is a diamond in the farthest-northwest bush in the Fairies Den. 62: When you feel you are ready, exit using the eastern path. 63: Go east and exit the maze using the northern path. 64: You're in the Forest of Stones. 65: Giving directions for this part wouldn't really help. Just walk around and kill enemies. 66: When fighting the harpies that chase you around, it's best to use your shakram. 67: After you kill all the harpies, the queen/princess is in the northeast area of the forest. 68: Talk to the queen/princess. She will tell you to ask the fairies how to help, and then disappear. 69: Go back to the Fairie's Den. 70: A blue fairy in the den says to go to the barbarian village behind the volcano. 71: Go back to the two mushrooms you chopped to get out of the hedges in the maze. 72: Chop these, go south into the hedges. Pull the boulder back three spaces and go left. 73: Pull the boulder on the right down a space. Push the left boulder up one space. 74: Push the boulder on the right down a space from above. Pull left boulder down one space. 75: Chop the flower. Pull the new boulder right three spaces. 76: Pull the boulder that is directly under the new boulder, down one space. 77: Push the right boulder right all the way. Push the lower-left boulder into the space on the left. 78: Pull the farthest-up boulder down one space and proceed, chopping the mushrooms. 79: Push this boulder down one space, and chop both mushrooms. Push lower-left boulder one space right. 80: Pull the upper-left boulder down two spaces, and proceed. 81: Pull the next boulder as far left as possible, and then up a space. 82: Push the lower-right boulder six spaces to the right. Chop a flower for six diamonds. 83: Pull the lower-left boulder up a space. The boulders should be side-by-side, if I'm right. 84: Go right and take the first turn down. Chop a 'shroom and push the next boulder all the way left. 85: Chop the mushroom and the flower for the Salamander Skin Boots. 86: Go back the way you came and take the east exit on the north side of the maze. 87: You are now in the Heart of the Volcano. Equip the boots and you can walk on the lava. 88: Head east until you reach another big body of land. Go far north and a tiny bit west from this. 89: You should reach the Top of the Volcano. Go north until you reach a circular area by a sign. 90: SAVE! 91: Go into the middle of this to reach the Great Death. 92: Use the spring to jump over boulders without getting hit. Hold the button for a higher jump. 93: If you have to, you can use the sword or shakram to kill bats. 94: When you get to an opening in the ground, jump over it! 95: When you're ready to fight, exit by going right. You'll get to the Wasp Boss. ========================================= BOSS STRATEGY: WASP | | Equip the sword and the shakram. You | should constantly throw the shakram | at the giant wasp, while using your | sword to fight off the mini-wasps. | You can't walk up and down, but you | can face up and down. Always face | up when you attack. When the wasp | gets low on health, it will stay | on the bottom part of the screen | and try to force you into the | corner so it can hurt you. Just | constantly slash it so it can't | move. If you don't kill it before | it finishes the cornering, it will | bounce up and down while moving | left and right. Just dodge it. | You shouldn't have much trouble | beating this boss. | ========================================= 96: After beating the wasp you will be in the Barbarian's Village. Congrats! ------------------------------------ WALKTHROUGH PART FOUR: THE BARBARIANS ==================================== ITEMS: MAPLE SYRUP, HAIR, POTION, COMMUNICATION DEVICE, LEATHER APRON, ELIXIR, SHEARS ------------------------------------ 97: In a bush-like thing a little bit northeast of the entrance is five diamonds. 98: Those warrior guys that walk around really fast are enemies; don't touch them. 99: Go southeast. A tiny bit northeast of a hut, there is a mushroom containing four diamonds. 100: Woohoo, step 100! There are some huts here; explore all but "shortcut." 101: In a bush by the water, there are three diamonds. 102: By the farthest south-west hut there are two diamonds. 103: Slightly northeast of this hut is the witch's hut. Talk to her. 104: She needs a fish. If you explored the other huts, you've talked to the fisherman and found out that there are no more fish. 105: You can't get the witch a fish at the moment. 106: Talk to the chief and the farmer. 107: Talk to the healer. He lives in a big hut. 108: Go to the "shortcut." You have to ride in the cart. Use A to jump. 109: HINT: It's easier to stay on the highest paths. 110: You should get to the Centaur Forest. 111: The farmer's wife is here. Talk to her and get a lock of her hair. 112: Head west. Take a western path to get to "Devil's Bridge." 113: You must make it through this side-scrolling part without falling. 114: After you make it across the water, you will be on Syrup Island. 115: Collect all the maple syrup hanging from the trees. 116: In the western part of the island, you can find a heart container! 117: There are many diamonds here. Chop everything. 118: When you've gotten seven syrups, go into the northeastern hole. 119: You will have to go through a *TIMED* side-scroller. 120: Watch your oxygen and go as fast as possible. 121: Use the springs to reach the ladder from the water. 122: When you get out, you will be in the Heart of the Volcano again. 123: Do just what you did when you were here last time. 124: You'll have to fight the wasp again! That's just plain cheap! 125: Go back to the healer's house. Equip the hair and talk to him. 126: No, the game isn't frozen; be patient and he'll finish talking. 127: He'll give you the potion and you'll owe fifty diamonds. 128: Go back to the farmer's wife using the shortcut. 129: Is the shortcut getting tedious? I actually think it's fun! 130: Equip the potion and talk to the farmer's wife. 131: Go back through the shortcut... again.... (Yay!!!) 132: Save if you haven't lately. 133: Talk to the farmer's wife. 134: The farmer's not here, and the wife is worried. Actually, he's in the barn. ********BEGIN OPTIONAL SECTION********** 135: You don't have to do this if you don't want to. 136: Go back through "shortcut" and go back to the Devil's Bridge. 137: Enter the bridge, and exit right where you came from. 138: You should be in the Bear's Territory. 139: Go to the Great Forest. 140: There is a path leading east. It leads to a place called "Quiet!!!" 141: Talk to the turtle and pay five diamonds to cross. 142: You will go through a mini-game. Stick to the back when possible, and it'll be easier to dodge the darts. This might take a couple tries. 143: If you're successful, you should get to Mini-Dragon Island. 144: Go east until you see a gnome-guy. 145: If you equip the maple syrup and talk to him he'll leave. 146: Take the communication device he leaves. I assume this has something to do with a multiplayer mode, but I don't know anything about it. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could mail me and tell me what's up with this item. 147: Watch out for those brown things. Sometimes they explode when you chop them. 148: When you're ready to leave, there is a plank on the south coast. Step on it and you'll be catapulted back to "Quiet!!!" 149: Go back to and through the maze. Go east to the Heart of the Volcano. 150: Go through the Top/Great Death/Wasp boss.... again. You should be saving as many diamonds as possible so you can recover from these battles. ********END OPTIONAL SECTION******** 151: In the barbarian village, go to the large barn. 152: Talk to the farmer and get the leather apron. 153: Go to the blacksmith. You have to pay off your debt with the healer before you can give the blacksmith the apron. 154: Equip the apron and talk to him. He'll give you the shears. 155: Go to the Centaur's Forest. You should know the path by now! :) 156: Go northwest to the chain. Equip the shears and walk on through. 157: Now that you've gotten rid of the chain, go back to the barbarian village and talk to the fisherman. 158: He'll give you the big fish. Bet you can't guess where to go next.... 159: Go to the witch's hut. Equip the fish, and talk to the witch. 160: She'll give you the elixir. 161: Go to the chief's hut. Equip the elixir and talk to him. 162: Yay, now you can get out of here! 163: Go to the east side of the village. You can walk past the rocks. ----------------------------------- WALKTHROUGH PART FIVE: DARPHUS AND MORPHEUS =================================== ITEMS: HEARTS, TIME, LYRE, KEY ----------------------------------- 164: You'll get to the Small Death. Heheh. 165: SAVE! 166: Don't fall too far. There's lava at the bottom, and the boots don't work for walking on it. 167: In the bottom-left corner you can find some extra hearts. 168: There's also some extra time in the middle-right section. 169: There's some MORE time up and left of that. 170: There are more hearts really far up. 171: At the end you'll have to fight the eye boss. ========================================= BOSS STRATEGY: THE EYE | | After Darphus finishes talking, | you'll have to fight an eyeball. | This really isn't very hard. | Just run from the eye, stopping | every once in awhile to throw | a shakram at the eye. When it | shoots little red things, just | watch them closely and you should | be able to dodge them without too | much trouble. Also, you can hit | the little red things and they | sometimes drop hearts. You must | constantly be hitting the eye, | so it will stand still. It's hard | to dodge if you get cornered so | don't let it happen. When the eye | starts rolling around, just go | the same direction as it, but | don't touch it! When you beat | it it'll drop extra hearts, | which you might need. | ========================================= 172: After you beat the eye, you'll be in a temple. 173: You'll get a message saying that you need to relight the torch. 174: I have no idea why, but the monks hurt you! 175: To relight the torch, you must slash certain statues. 176: I'm not quite sure about this. I *think* you just have to slash two demon statues to pass the big statue at the top. 177: You'll be in Darphus's Lair. 178: Equip the boots and go up the stairs. Walk north across the lava. 179: Fight the enemy at the top of the next set of stairs. 180: You might be able to position yourself so that the enemy just constantly walks into a torch while you throw shakrams at it. 181: After you beat it, walk up the little set of stairs in the corner. 182: You'll be in the Barbarian Village, and the people no longer hurt you. 183: Go to the Centaur Forest. The centaurs don't hurt you anymore. 184: Go to the Devil's Bridge, and then just go back the way you came. 185: You should be in the Bear's Territory. Go to the campsite where you got the shakram. 186: Talk to the farthest-left person. You need to get the Lyre of Time. 187: Exit and go to the Great Forest. 188: Walk north until you see a weak green man by a tree. Chase him around the tree and you'll catch him eventually. 189: Take the lyre he drops and go back to the campsite. 190: Equip the lyre and talk to the farthest-left person. 191: They'll lift the curse on the centaurs. According to the centaurs, it was already gone though.... 192: Go back through the maze again and go to the Forest of Stones. 193: Walk around and slash all the symbols on the rocks. When they're all gone you can pass the big wall with the symbols on it. 194: Walk straight up and climb the tree. 195: This is a non-timed sidescroller. DON'T FALL! 196: You can climb vines by jumping and pushing up while you're touching them. 197: The shakram will probably work better than the sword here. 198: While you're climbing, watch the patterns of enemy movement. Only go up to the next ledge when the enemy is out of the way. 199: It's best to go up and carefully kill all the enemies one by one. 200: Woohoo, step 200! I'd like to thank my friends and my family and.... 201: This isn't like a maze or anything. Just go up as high as you can. 202: When you go high enough, you'll get to the Harpy boss. ========================================= BOSS STRATEGY: THE HARPY | | Whoa, that's a scary boss! Equip | the sword and shakram, as always. | You have to use the sword to cut | the spiders from the big thing. | Then you can hurt the boss | itself. The spiders respawn | after every few seconds; keep | them dead. The boss has two parts | to attack: The tail and the head. | When cutting the spiders, you'll | have a lower chance of getting | hit if you attack from the left | or right, but this can be hard | to do. You decide. Harder than | the other bosses, but not TOO | big a problem.... | ========================================= 203: After winning, you'll be in the Forest of Stones with the Fairy Queen/Princess. 204: Go back through the maze to the Great Forest. 205: Talk to the fairy by the wooden boards. It will open the passage. This means that you don't have to use the maze anymore! YES!!! 206: Be warned: if you go in, you have very little time. 207: Go to the Bear's Territory, and then to the Swamps where you started. SAVE THE GAME! 208: Talk to the fairy there. You'll have to jump across all those lilies! 209: You need the spring for this. Be careful how far you jump. 210: If you jump to the little island, there are 13 diamonds. 211: When you get across, exit east. 212: Oh no, more lilies! I can't really tell you which way to go here. It's not too hard anyway. I might be able to help if you mail me. 213: There are some more diamonds around here. 214: There is a southern path of stones that leads to the Centaur Forest. After you've touched every lily in the pond (Actually, there's a certain one you need to touch, but I don't know which one) follow this path. 215: Chop the well in the town. If you touched the right lily pad, you'll be taken to the castle moats. 215: This is an untimed sidescroller. Jeez, are we EVER going to get to use all that extra time we have? :) 216: Be careful of your oxygen. It goes down fast here. 217: There's an extra heart container here; make sure you get it. 218: When you get through here, you'll be at the Ramparts. 219: Enter the door to the right of the hole. 220: Kill all the guards here, and a key will appear. 221: Go back to where you came from. Equip the key and go through the middle door. 222: You'll be in the guardroom. 223: Ahh! Those little dudes are harder than they look! Kill them. 224: Slash the door and you can pass. You'll be in the kitchens. 225: Heheh, that crap the chefs throw at you doesn't do any damage! 226: This part is a little weird. Maybe it's random chance, or maybe it's some trick we (that means I) can't figure out, but sometimes the door on the right can't be chopped down. The most I can tell you is this: Once I couldn't open it, and one chef was alive. I walked clockwise around the table once, and the door would open without me even killing that chef. I don't get it!! 227: Exit south to get to Morpheus's Chamber. 228: To free him, you need to release the white ghosts in the other room. Go back up, and right. 229: *There was a really stupid thing here that has been removed. I apologize for my idiocy.* 230: There are certain parts of the wall that break away when you slash them, revealing keys. I can't explain them, but it's easy now that you know what to do. Just walk around and chop the walls. To free ghosts, just equip the key and walk into the cage. Yay! There's hope of me finishing the guide after all! 231: To free the second and third ghosts, you have to wait for the ghost that's currently out to kill a blue ghost. Then you can free the next one. 232: After all the blue ghosts are dead, go back to Morpheus's chamber. 233: Walk into the square thing and it will disappear. Talk to Morpheus. 234: Thus, in 234 easy steps.... Well, actually less because some of them were useless.... You've beaten the game! My work here is done. 235: Oh yeah, you can push select during the credits to see how long it took you to beat the game. So, if you like this game enough to try to beat your records, go ahead. My time was 2 hours, 49 minutes, and 29 seconds. Of course you could beat me because you have a guide to help you, but I don't care anyway. I can't put these in the normal walkthrough, though... Can you imagine how long it would take to replace all those numbers??? ----------------- QUESTION FROM CARO: "I have a question for you. I have been stuck in the Rapids section (somewhat south of the bear's territory) since I got the game. Is there a way through? I can get to the land parts, but getting the raft thru the whirlpools and rapids get me every time. Is this a dead end section?" MY ANSWER: Wow, that IS hard! All I can really tell you is that you can use the up button to slow down, and you should use it whenever you can. Actually, you don't need to beat the rapids. They just lead to syrup island, like the Devil's Bridge. ----------------- FASTEST TIMES ----------------- Here I'll post the top five times for beating the game. As if I'm going to actually get five....
