I'm confused. When I chose donation and handed him the painting he didn't appraise it, he
kept it. I thought the point of getting a painting appraised was to know the value, not
to donate it to the museum. I'm pretty new to the game, so please excuse my ignorance. :)

If he takes it check the painting's part of the museum.
If its there it means its real.

the p***word from a list in the walkthroughs section on this site.
