There are many tricks in Nintendogs, beyond what is taught in the Dog Training Book.
Here is a list (with descriptions) of all basic tricks you can teach your dogs.
Sit Down
This trick is the most basic, and is taught with the tutorial at the beginning of the
game, so it's un-missable. Pet your dog's head or face and then slide the stylus quickly
down when the dog is standing. It should sit.
Lie Down
When the dog is sitting pet the dog's head or face and quickly slide the stylus downward
and the dog should lie down.
Shake
When the dog is sitting, grab and hold the dog's left paw (right to the player), and teach
the command. The paw must be lifted up to the dog's midway point. (Can be taught for left
paw as well) (Can be taught from almost any position as well)
Play Dead
When the dog is lying down, pet it's head, side, back, or face and slide quickly to the
right or left. The dog should lie on its side.
Roll Over
When the dog is is the Play Dead position, slide in the same direction used to get into
Play Dead once more and the dog should lie on its back.
Spin
When the dog is standing, flick the stylus to either side to get the dog to turn around.
Then, when the dog's butt is facing you, grab and hold its tail until the dog starts
chasing it. Do not hold the tail for too long or else the dog will snap and get mad.
Play Bow
When your dog is being playful and bows at you, teach the command.
Jump
Wait for/get your dog to do a Play Bow and then tap the air above your dog's head. The dog
should jump up.
Beg
When your dog is standing, pet your dog's chest or neck and slide the stylus quickly
upwards. The dog should sit up on its hind legs in a begging position. Note that this
tricks may take a while for your dog to do.
Stand Up / Dance
When your dog is in a Beg position, grab its paw and lift upwards until your dog is
standing on its two hind feet.
Howl
You cannot encourage your dog to howl, but whenever the dog hears another dog somewhere
barking or howling, or whenever a siren goes off, he/she will howl, so you can teach the
command.
Kick
When your dog is standing, quickly tap any of it's four paws and it'll kick or shake them.
This tricks is kind of pointless, but still.
Sneeze
When your dog is in any position, tap its nose and it'll sneeze. Once again, pointless,
but still.
Squirm
When your dog is in the Roll Over position, abruptly tap the dog's front paws, chest,
stomach, hind paws, or private areas and they'll sort of squirm about a bit. Kind of
pointless, but hey.
Advanced Tricks (with descriptions) These are mostly trick combinations, and can take a
while to pull off.
Shuffle
When your dog is in a Beg position, say the Spin command and the dog will shuffle around
in a circle while still begging.
Bunny Hop
When your dog is in the Stand Up / Dance position, give the Jump command and the dog will
do a Bunny Hop or two.
Sing / Song Name
You must have the Keyboard item. Use the Keyboard, focus in on one dog, and play a tune
slow enough for the dog to keep up with their barking in tune, and teach that doggy how to
sing a tune!
Backflip
When your dog is sitting, say the Jump command and your dog should do a summersault!
Groundflip
When your dog is lying down, say the Jump command and your dog should do a Groundflip.
Handstand
When your dog is lying down, say the Beg command and your dog will stand on his/her two
front feet.
Breakdance
When your dog is in the Roll Over position, say the Spin command and your dog will
Breakdance for you.
