Walkthrough - Nintendogs: Dalmatian and Friends FAQ/WalkthroughNINTENDOGS DALMATIONS AND FRIENDS Versions: 0.0: Start the guide. 1.0: Have all required info to complete the game. Still need more advanced trick confirmation (trying some more) and bark mode Welcome experts and noobs alike to my guide to Nintendogs #################### $ Table of Contents #################### 1. Getting Started 2. After The Beginning 3. Commands 4. Competitions 5. Trainer Points 6. Tips (no jokes, just cash and change) 7. Copyright and Other Legal Info ################## $ Getting Started ################## First, you need to buy the game. NOTE: ALL GAMES ARE THE SAME, WITH MINOR VARIATIONS. This is very important because there is no reason to buy a certain game to get a certain dog. This is only effective for getting the dalmation, because not only do you get the dalmation, you get the fireman's hat FREE, my favorite price. Normally, you have to spend hours searching for it, but on Dalmations and Friends, it comes with the game. NOTE: DO NOT SELL THE FIREMAN'S HAT. Or else you have to find it to adopt dalmations. I will not be like Nintendo and every time for every game I will place instructions on how to start. I respect readers, and if you can read, you can start this game. OK, so the first thing that happens after you turn on the game is a door opening, and you enter the kennel. Then, ignore the look area ALWAYS. That is just a chihuahua, lab, and dachshund. USELESS, and a waste of time. Anyway, just select buy, and take a look at the breeds. Figure out which one you want to buy (you will have plenty of money to buy food and other things even if you do buy the most expensive breed, Dalmation on Dm &f), and touch the picture of the dogs. NOTE: THE DESCRIPTION OF THE DOG TELLS YOU HOW THEY WILL ACT, AND IT DEFINITLY DOES MATTER. If you want your dog to be participate in the Obedience Trial, you definitly do not want a stubborn dog, or it will take forever to teach it. To start, you have the Dalmation, Beagle, Boxer, Golden Retriver, German Shephard, and the Yorkshire Terrier. They can all have the same descriptions, so don't get a certain breed because it won't be stubborn. For more on adopting a dog for a certain competition, see the info about that competition. Anyway, you get home, and it guides you through the next few steps. When it says call it or whatever, just touch the middle of the screen, the button with the dog next to the guy, and your dog will come to you. Always. Even after the dog has a name. All dogs in the house will come to you, though, so it is only effective with one dog in the house. After this, Nintendo takes you to the "roaming" part of the game. This means you can do anything, really. Anything in the game. ###################### $ After the Beginning ###################### OK, so you taught your dog to sit. Now what? Just leave it there and it will care for itself. NO! You have to feed it, water it, bathe it, and brush it. FOOD AND DRINKS Food doesn't really matter, but I am guessing the more expensive the food, the more value it serves your dog. Pure guessing. Same with drinks. BATHING The shampoo you use does affect your dog. Your dog can only reach beautiful with the shampoo like its hair: long or short. Long costs a little more, but they usually look better IMO. BRUSHES See above. To check on your dogs status, touch its name. WALKING You also need to take you dog on walks. That is the only way to prepare for the disc competition and the Agility Trial (more on those in the competition section), and it is the only way to find certain items, like Aerodiscs (which are flying discs, but better), and the soccer ball. It is a great way to make money if your dog is not doing well in competitions. SHOPPING This is where you go to sell items, buy items, adopt more dogs, and change the layout of your room. You can also go to the dog hotel and leave up to five dogs, but you always have to have one at home. CONTESTS The best way to make money. The contests, in order of hardness, are the Agility Trial, Disc Competition, and the Obedience Trial. More on these in the Competition Section. BARK MODE This is the multiplayer mode. Unfortunately, I have not found anyone to enter bark mode with yet, so it may be a while before I have this section. MAKING MONEY In order to make money in this game, you must win competitions. You can also sell unused items at the second hand shop in the shopping area of the Go Out menu from your house. ########### $ Commands ########### This is a list of commands that are required and some advanced tricks. These are all for the Obedience Trial. Go to the tips section for some tips about teaching you dog tricks and verbal commands. SIMPLE TRICKS Sit Down You had to teach your first dog this to unlock the freedom in the beginning. I sure hope you haven't forgotten this. Lie Down While your dog is sitting, use the stylus and rub your dog's head and then make a downward motion. Then give it the verbal command for Lie Down. Shake While your dog is sitting, take one of the paws and lift it up until you see the training icon. Then give it the verbal command for Shake. Roll Over While your dog is lying, take the stylus and rub it across the head to get it on its side, then do the same motion on the dog's side. Then give it the verbal command for Roll Over Jump Contrary to common knowledge, your dog does NOT have to be shaking its butt to be taught this trick. All you have to do is place the stylus above its head, and then it should jump. Then gice it the verbal command for Jump. Spin When you can reach your dog's tail, touch it with the stylus and hold it. After a while, your dog will start to spin. Then give it the verbal command for Spin. Beg The. Hardest. Required. Trick. Teach. Your. Dog. Period. You CANNOT teach this to your dog for about a week, your dog must be smart, and it must not be hungry or thirsty. Take the stylus WHILE THE DOG IS STANDING and rub it slowly, but not too slowly, up the chest. If your dog wants to, and you do it right, your dog will asume the begging position. Immediately, say "beg". Only beg. Make sure nothing else sounds like it. Touch the icon first. NOT SIMPLE COMPOUND TRICKS There are different names for this. I call them compound tricks because they require you to use verbal commands to at least start them. This is the best way to earn points. I earned a 10.0 performing one, and I missed a required performance. Break Dance The simplest, and probably the first one you want to teach your dog. First, tell your dog to roll over. Then, before it finishes rolling, tell it to spin. If it spins on its back, then it has break danced. Teach it the verbal command for break dance. Dance This you must teach your dog the beg trick first. Once it is begging, take and drag its paw up, so it is actually standing, and not resting its ass on its feet. Then you should be able to let it go, and it should hop around. Then you should be able to teach it the verbal command for dance. UPPER SCREEN TRICKS You cannot make you dog perform these, but zoom in on them and they may do them on their own, and then you can teach them the verbal command. Scratch When your dog scratches itself, give it the verbal. Howl Occationally, your dog will howl. Then give it the verbal. OTHER TRICKS Not required, not a combination of tricks, and not on the upper screen. Sneeze Touch your dog's nose, and it should sneeze. Then give it the verbal for Sneeze. Play Dead When you were half-way between Lie Down and Roll Over (when you dog was on its side), that is what I am talking about. Give it the verbal for Play Dead. Sing For this, you need to buy a keyboard at one of the discount shops. After you have it, you need to take it out, then hit the final button on the top row to make sure your tune sounds right and is 15 notes or less. Then hit one of the other three buttons (it doesn't matter which), and the camera button. It should now display a number. Then play the tune over and over until it learns the song, giving it the verbal command each time. NOTE: Each dog can only learn one tune at a time. ############### $ Competitions ############### There are three competitions your dog can participate in. The Obedience Trial, the Disc Competition, and the Agility Trial. These will all be explained in due time. AGILITY TRIAL This is the easist competition, but last you can participate in, because you cannot train for this in your home, and it is farther than the parks from your house. But it is well worth the wait, because this is the easiest way to make money. TRAINING Bar The single bar is the second easiest to train for. Just continue to tap the bar until your dog jumps over it. After a while, your dog should start to jump it while running, and that is what you want. Tunnel This is the hardest to train for. You have to get your dog to enter the tunnel, then drag the stylus through the tunnel. Eventually, your dog will learn to go through it on its own and that is what you want. Double Bar This is just like a bar obstacle with one key difference, you have to bars to jump. That being said, this is the only obstacle in the game that your dog already knows, since it is just a large bar obstacle, and the dog just jumps farther. See Saw This is the toughest obstacle to teach your dog to overcome. Send the dog up one side, then make it go to the other side by tapping the region right behind it really fast, then tapping and holding right before the dog goes over the edge. The probability of your dog jumping off before completing the obstacle is extremely high, but if you have a fast-learning dog, it can learn how to perform on the see saw quickly. Eventually it will go so fast that it will jump off the end before it touches the ground. IN ORDER FOR THE OBSTACLE TO BE COMPLETED, THE END OF THE OBSTACLE MUST TOUCH THE GROUND BEFORE YOUR DOG LEAVES THE OBSTACLE. To stop it, just tap and hold the stylus behind the dog, but still on the obstacle. Slalom To train your dog pass this obstacle, tap the end of the sticks. It must enter the side that "lights up" to pass the obstacle. First you must slowly drag the stylus between the sticks, then after a while, it will run through them on its own. Sometimes it will stop and look at you. Keep tapping behind it, then it will continue. After you correct this a few times, it will stop. LIST OF WHAT OBSTACLES APPEAR IN EACH CLASS: Beginner: Bar and tunnel Open: Bar, tunnel, double bar, and See saw Expert and above: Bar, tunnel, double bar, see saw, and Slalom GOOD BREEDS FOR THE AGILITY TRIAL: Shih tzu, Beagle, KC Spaniel DISC COMPETITION This is the second easiest to competion in the game, after Agility Trials, to beat. Period. In order to perform in this competition, you must go to a park and train. To train, you must have a throwing disc. Either color will do. Take out the disc, then touch the disc and drag it to the bottom of the screen. Slowly drag up the stylus and let go. The faster and farther you drag the stylus, the farther the disc goes. After a while, the dog will be able to catch the disc farther from you. You do not need to catch the disc very far from you in the beginning, but train your dog as much as you can when you can because you can only go for walks every half hour, and it is a half hour from when you arrive back at home. GOOD BREEDS: Golden Retriever Shih Tzu, Beagle, Dalmation OBEDIENCE TRIAL This is the hardest to beat, but the first competition you train for, since you are forced to teach your first dog to sit by the game. The list of tricks is earlier in the guide. List of tricks needed for contest: Beginner: Sit, Lie, Shake Open: Sit, Lie, Shake, Spin, Roll Expert and above: Sit, Lie, Shake, Spin, Roll, Jump, Beg GOOD BREEDS: Any will work well, unlike the other two, but the good breeds are Shih Tzu, Beagle, KC Spaniel, and German Shepherd. ################ $ Trainer Points ################ Trainer points are very important to the game. Usually every 2000 or so you will unlock a new breed/interior design. Also, you unlock food and other items appearing at the discount shops. You earn trainer points by spending time with your dog. This includes feeding, brushing, washing, training, walking, ect. NOTE: For feeding you must be zoomed in on the dog, and agility training and disc competition training time is counted even when you are not zoomed in on the dog. Also, for every competition you win you get 100 trainer points. Trainer points unlock usually the best dogs in the game, but sometimes the best dogs (Shih Tzu Cough Cough) are already unlocked (try Dauchshand and Friends). ################### $ Tips for the game ################### 1: For the first Obedience Trial (first ever, or the first few), you will not likely have been able to teach your dogs an advanced trick. Any trick that is not required is considered advanced, so Roll is a good choice in the beginner class, but don't do that exclusively. Have it perform some other tricks. In the Open, try jump and maybe (if you are extremely lucky that your dog has learned this by now) beg. Expert and above, Dance and Sing once you can. 2: Dogs easily confuse some sounds, or they get muddled before the sound gets recognized and processed by the game. Tips on commands: 1) Don't use s or z. 2) try to avoid similar sounding words, like sit and spin. 3) Sh, th, & ch are no-no's. 4) Try to emphasize the parts of a word that are going to sound different than other tricks. 5) On sing, try to name the trick the name of the tune/song it is part of. I taught my dogs part of Famous Last Words by My Chemical Romance, and the verbal command for it is "Famous" 3: Drag the leash to the right side of the screen. Your dog should run, and that supposedly helps in agility trials and Disc comps. 4: Routines help, like feed and water your dog, then walk it and go to the park, then gym, then back home for obedience trial training. That way your dog will love you more. ################################ $ Copyright and Other Legal Info ################################ Copyright 2008 by Andrew Fox.
