If you have followed any of my previous guides, you will know that I write up the boss guides in a certain way. I've completely changed that method around this time, cleaning it up a lot in my eyes, so it should be a lot better this time around. Most notable: I am now listing EXP points and abilities. I will be adding the Rival section this time around, having forgotten to do so last time, in my Platinum boss guide. There will not be movesets listed, as A) I don't want to use Ditto to record his moves, and B) aside from a few TM moves here and there, his moves are pretty much all level-up moves that you can find on Serebii.net or even here on GameFAQs anyway. Sorry for any inconvenience. Due to popular demand, I will also be adding the battle synopsises for the Team Rocket Executives. I still refuse to do anything for Giovanni since I am not able to battle him, but I'll do the four executives for you good people. All in all, this will be by far my most in-depth boss guide to date. I hope it will be of help to you. In case you have any questions, I can be contacted personally at one of the two e-mail addresses that I posted in the copyright information section. There is, however, a restriction on what you may contact me for, listed here: - If you contact me for personal issues, or even just to say hello, the e-mail will be ignored and deleted. I will only address e-mails pertaining to the guide. - If you contact me with questions that are easily answered within the guide, I will likely delete the e-mail as well. If there is anything in my guide that is unclear, feel free to notify me through e-mail and I will explain further, but if I find that the so-called unclear section is in fact easily explained in the guide itself, I will not reply. - Hate mail will not be addressed. It will be deleted immediately, with no exceptions whatsoever. Don't waste my time and your own telling me unsavory things about my mother. - If you see any mistakes in my guide, please notify me as soon as possible, and I will rectify them. This guide is here to help people, not to further confuse them. If you do find a mistake and inform me, your name will be added to the list of thanks at the end of the guide, and the error will be fixed as soon as I find it. Thank you for your patience, and without further ado, I present my guide! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =================================== | 2: JOHTO GYM LEADER GUIDE | jgl | =================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o----------------------------------o |-- Violet Gym Leader: Falkner ----| o----------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Flying-type --------| |-- Prize: TM 51 (Roost), 1560y ---| |-- Badge: Zephyr Badge -----------| |-- HM Usage: HM 06 (Rock Smash) --| |-- Difficulty: 2-3/10 ------------| |-- Level Average: 11 -------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 418 --| o----------------------------------o o------------------------o |-- Falkner's Pokemon: --| o------------------------o--------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Pidgey ----------------------| |-- Gender: Male -----------------------------| |-- Level: 9 ---------------------------------| |-- Type: Normal/Flying ----------------------| |-- Ability: Keen Eye ------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 105 -------------------| |-- Moves: Tackle, Sand-Attack ---------------| |-- Recommended Type: Rock -------------------| o---------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Pidgeotto -------------------| |-- Gender: Male -----------------------------| |-- Level: 13 --------------------------------| |-- Type: Normal/Flying ----------------------| |-- Ability: Keen Eye ------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 313 -------------------| |-- Moves: Tackle, Sand-Attack, Gust, Roost --| |-- Recommended Type: Rock -------------------| o---------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Quilava -----|----- 14 --| |-- Geodude -----|----- 14 --| o----------------------------o As you can see, there's been a change in his levels since Gold and Silver. He is no longer a wimpy pushover and is quite capable of doing some damage. Just be glad he doesn't have a Staravia/Swellow and Wing Attack. Pidgey won't do much to you, and is only really there to chip at your health, so if you have high enough levels, it won't do eff-all in the end anyway, especially if you're like me and using a Geodude. Pidgeotto, however, can hold its own, at least against non-Rock Pokemon. Gust will seriously hurt you if you're underleveled, so train in Sprout Tower before the battle. Roost is the Flying-type Recover, meaning it will restore half its HP when used. This will serve to piss you off greatly, so try to beat it quickly and you'll be fine. Also note that Roost will make the bird a pure Normal-type for the rest of the turn after being used, so if used first, your Rock Throws will only do regular damage afterward. No Flash this time. You get to use Rock Smash after winning. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o-----------------------------------o |-- Azalea Gym Leader: Bugsy -------| o-----------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Bug-type ------------| |-- Prize: TM 89 (U-Turn), 1800y ---| |-- Badge: Hive Badge --------------| |-- HM Usage: HM 01 (Cut) ----------| |-- Difficulty: 4/10 ---------------| |-- Level Average: 16 --------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 1140 --| o-----------------------------------o o----------------------o |-- Bugsy's Pokemon: --| o----------------------o------------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Scyther -----------------------------| |-- Gender: Female -----------------------------------| |-- Level: 17 ----------------------------------------| |-- Type: Bug/Flying ---------------------------------| |-- Ability: Technician ------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry -------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 681 ---------------------------| |-- Moves: U-Turn, Quick Attack, Leer, Focus Energy --| |-- Recommended Type: Rock, Flying, Fire -------------| o-----------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Metapod -----------------------------| |-- Gender: Female -----------------------------------| |-- Level: 15 ----------------------------------------| |-- Type: Bug ----------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Shed Skin -------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 231 ---------------------------| |-- Moves: Tackle, Harden ----------------------------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire, Rock, Flying -------------| o-----------------------------------------------------o |-- 3rd Pokemon: Kakuna ------------------------------| |-- Gender: Female -----------------------------------| |-- Level: 15 ----------------------------------------| |-- Type: Bug/Poison ---------------------------------| |-- Ability: Shed Skin -------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 228 ---------------------------| |-- Moves: Poison Sting, Harden ----------------------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire, Rock, Flying -------------| o-----------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Quilava -----|----- 19 --| |-- Geodude -----|----- 19 --| |-- Flaaffy -----|----- 19 --| o----------------------------o A much harder battle this time, simply because the signature attack used does not suck anymore. He leads with Scyther this time, who will almost always use U-Turn, a move that will deal damage and then swap the user out for another Pokemon, which will be either Metapod or Kakuna, who are not fully evolved this time around either for reasons I still don't comprehend. Oh well. Taking out his two useless bugs isn't the problem; they both go out pretty easily, especially considering they almost never use moves outside of their damaging attacks. The problem is that when you do finally beat them (if you don't beat Scyther first), Scyther will be able to use U-Turn without having to switch out after, meaning he will keep the damage coming. U-Turn has a base Attack stat of 70 and, unlike Fury Cutter, is not inaccurate. If you chose Cyndaquil as your starter, you'll be fine. Same thing if you have a Flying- type like Pidgeotto. Geodude and such will still take a fair bit of damage, but Rock Throw will still deal insane damage, so it's worth it. Don't come in here with a Grass-type, period. It won't win. Also keep in mind that its ability, Technician, makes Quick Attack more powerful as well, bringing it up to 60 BP instead of 40. Seriously though, after ten years, you would think Metapod and Kakuna would finally be evolved for this battle... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o-----------------------------------o |-- Goldenrod Gym Leader: Whitney --| o-----------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Normal-type ---------| |-- Prize: TM 45 (Attract), 2400y --| |-- Badge: Plain Badge -------------| |-- HM Usage: HM 04 (Stength) ------| |-- Difficulty: 5-6/10 -------------| |-- Level Average: 18 --------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 1060 --| o-----------------------------------o o------------------------o |-- Whitney's Pokemon: --| o------------------------o------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Clefairy ------------------------| |-- Gender: Female -------------------------------| |-- Level: 17 ------------------------------------| |-- Type: Normal ---------------------------------| |-- Ability: Cute Charm --------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 247 -----------------------| |-- Moves: Doubleslap, Metronome, Encore, Mimic --| |-- Recommended Type: Fighting -------------------| o-------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Miltank -------------------------| |-- Gender: Female -------------------------------| |-- Level: 19 ------------------------------------| |-- Type: Normal ---------------------------------| |-- Ability: Scrappy -----------------------------| |-- Item: Lum Berry ------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 813 -----------------------| |-- Moves: Stomp, Rollout, Milk Drink, Attract ---| |-- Recommended Type: Fighting, Rock -------------| o-------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Quilava -----|----- 23 --| |-- Geodude -----|----- 23 --| |-- Flaaffy -----|----- 23 --| o----------------------------o Most of what I said in my Gold/Silver guide can apply to this battle; the only real difference is that each one has a level knocked off. For those who did not see that guide or who just don't want to go back and read it, I'll go into detail here. Clefairy wasn't a problem back in Gold/Silver, but it can be now because of Cute Charm, its ability. If you use a physical move on Clefairy (and it isn't KO'd), there's a chance your Pokemon will become infatuated with it. This will suck, plain and simple. Infatuation means that your chances of using an attack are cut in half. Outside of its cheap ability, it has Metronome and Doubleslap to attack, neither of which should be considered tough. Metronome can pull any attack in the Pokeverse out at random, but that's completely random; you will most likely not see a particularly useful one pulled unless you're really unlucky. The difficulty setting is purely for Miltank, the fat cow from the original gen that simply loves being an ass. It has the exact same moveset as last time with no changes. On the other hand, Miltank likes to use Stomp as its offense this time around, only occasionally using Rollout. It will almost always lead with Attract, the attack vesion of Cute Charm. If you thought Clefairy was annoying...you will hate Miltank with the burning anger of a thousand gods. Luck be with you. Geodude and Magnemite are good Pokemon to use against this gym, but Fighting Pokemon are your best bet. Oh, and don't get too excited if you manage to paralyze it or put it to sleep; Miltank is holding a Lum Berry, which heals all status conditions when used. If you're lucky enough to get a status condition in a second time, good job to you. By the way, if you happen to be using a Ghost Pokemon, Miltank's ability allows it to use Normal-types on them. Keep that in mind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o---------------------------------------o |-- Ecruteak Gym Leader: Morty ---------| o---------------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Ghost-type --------------| |-- Prize: TM 30 (Shadow Ball), 2760y --| |-- Badge: Fog Badge -------------------| |-- HM Usage: HM 03 (Surf) -------------| |-- Difficulty: 4/10 -------------------| |-- Level Average: 23 ------------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 2634 ------| o---------------------------------------o o----------------------o |-- Morty's Pokemon: --| o----------------------o------------------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Gastly ------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 21 ----------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Ghost/Poison -------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Levitate --------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 427 ---------------------------------| |-- Moves: Lick, Spite, Curse, Mean Look -------------------| |-- Recommended Type: Ghost, Psychic -----------------------| o-----------------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Haunter -----------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 21 ----------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Ghost/Poison -------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Levitate --------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 567 ---------------------------------| |-- Moves: Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Nightmare, Curse ---------| |-- Recommended Type: Ghost, Psychic -----------------------| o-----------------------------------------------------------o |-- 3rd Pokemon: Gengar ------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 25 ----------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Ghost/Poison -------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Levitate --------------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry -------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1017 --------------------------------| |-- Moves: Shadow Ball, Sucker Punch, Hypnosis, Mean Look --| |-- Recommended Type: N/A ----------------------------------| o-----------------------------------------------------------o |-- 4th Pokemon: Haunter -----------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 23 ----------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Ghost/Poison -------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Levitate --------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 621 ---------------------------------| |-- Moves: Night Shade, Sucker Punch, Curse, Mean Look -----| |-- Recommended Type: Ghost, Psychic -----------------------| o-----------------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Quilava -----|----- 27 --| |-- Golem -------|----- 27 --| |-- Hypno -------|----- 27 --| |-- Flaaffy -----|----- 28 --| o----------------------------o All four of his Ghosts have the ability Levitate, which renders Ground attacks useless. Since one of his four weaknesses is Ground-types, this narrows down your options a little. Another point is that Dark-types are in low-to-zero supply right now. You can use Ghosts against his Ghosts if you can strike first, but do not use them against Gengar, as he has Shadow Ball and the first available level to learn Shadow Ball without the TM is 33. Since Psychics will also get thrashed by Shadow Ball, I don't recommended anything specific for Gengar. The Gastly and Haunters won't give you much trouble. Gastly will go down to pretty much anything, and the second Haunter can't really hurt you. The lower- leveled Haunter relies on your Pokemon being asleep to damage it with Dream Eater and Nightmare, the former working as a Psychic-type Mega Drain and the latter working like Curse does, except on sleeping foes. If you can keep your Pokemon awake, that's no problem anyway. It'll usually fall to one hit from any super-effective hit regardless, even if it's something simple like Bite on Croconaw/Growlithe/etc. Gengar is in a league of its own, far beyond other staple Pokemon you've faced like Scyther and Miltank. It no longer has Dream Eater, instead using the less worthy Sucker Punch (which runs off its terrible Attack stat), but this does not change much. See, With gen 4 came a physical/special split, and Shadow Ball was one of the attacks affected by it. This means that Shadow Ball will be MUCH stronger this time than it was back in gen 2. It also still has the ever-present Hypnosis, which will put you to sleep before it thrashes you with Shadow Ball. If you have a Normal-type Pokemon, this issue is rendered non- existent, but since most Normal-types can't do anything to Ghosts either, you would be better off facing it with something that can fight back. It is possible to have an Alakazam at this point, so if you do, you've likely won already. Keep the power split in mind throughout this battle and you'll be fine. *To add to this synopsis, I received additional advice for this battle on June 17th/2010, something I did not consider beforehand: if you catch a Kangaskhan on the Pokewalker before this battle (which is possible on the first route), it will stomp Morty's team with Bite and the ability Scrappy, which I have mentioned before in my synopsis for Whitney. *To further add, I've received word that if you choose to use a Normal-type anyway, Gengar will be unable to hurt it if you don't attack it directly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o---------------------------------------o |-- Cianwood Gym Leader: Chuck ---------| o---------------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Fighting-type -----------| |-- Prize: TM 01 (Focus Punch), 3720y --| |-- Badge: Storm Badge -----------------| |-- HM Usage: HM 02 (Fly) --------------| |-- Difficulty: 3-4/10 -----------------| |-- Level Average: 30 ------------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 2153 ------| o---------------------------------------o o----------------------o |-- Chuck's Pokemon: --| o----------------------o---------------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Primeape -------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ----------------------------------------| |-- Level: 29 -------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Fighting --------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Anger Point --------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 925 ------------------------------| |-- Moves: Focus Punch, Rock Slide, Leer, Double Team ---| |-- Recommended Type: Psychic ---------------------------| o--------------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Poliwrath ------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ----------------------------------------| |-- Level: 31 -------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Water/Fighting --------------------------------| |-- Ability: Water Absorb -------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry ----------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1228 -----------------------------| |-- Moves: Focus Punch, Surf, Body Slam, Hypnosis -------| |-- Recommended Type: Psychic, Grass, Flying, Electric --| o--------------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Quilava -----|----- 31 --| |-- Golem -------|----- 31 --| |-- Hypno -------|----- 31 --| |-- Lapras ------|----- 31 --| |-- Ampharos ----|----- 32 --| o----------------------------o Your Grass-types will finally have a chance to shine here, especially little Chikorita, which should be fully evolved now anyway. This battle is easier than before. Both of Chuck's Pokemon know Focus Punch, a move with 20 PP and a base Attack of 150. Yes, you read correctly: it's as powerful as moves like Hyper Beam. The good news? It attacks last, and if you damage the Pokemon using it before it can attack, it'll cancel the attack out. This essentially means it'll have wasted a turn each time it uses Focus Punch. That being said, his two Pokemon do have other attacks they can use. Don't use your Flying-type against Primeape. It has Rock Slide, so Pidgeotto/ Golbat/whoever else will get knocked out of the sky pretty damn easily. If you took my advice for the last gym battle and leveled up a Psychic-type, it'll crush Primeape here. It'll probably also nail Poliwrath as well, unless he gets you first with Surf or Body Slam. If your Psychic-type goes down, whip out a Grass-type and watch Poliwrath fall. This battle won't give you much trouble, I assure you. *To add to this synopsis, I've received word that Steel-types can do well against Primeape due to resisting Rock Slide, as long as they can prevent Focus Punch; Primeape will only use Focus Punch and Double Team against them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o-------------------------------------o |-- Olivine Gym Leader: Jasmine ------| o-------------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Steel-type ------------| |-- Prize: TM 23 (Iron Tail), 4200y --| |-- Badge: Mineral Badge -------------| |-- HM Usage: N/A --------------------| |-- Difficulty: 1-2/10 ---------------| |-- Level Average: 32 ----------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 2612 ----| o-------------------------------------o o------------------------o |-- Jasmine's Pokemon: --| o------------------------o------------------------------------o |-- 1st and 2nd Pokemon: Magnemite ---------------------------| |-- Genders: None --------------------------------------------| |-- Levels: 30 -----------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Electric/Steel -------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Magnet Pull -------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 571 each ------------------------------| |-- Moves: Thunderbolt, Sonicboom, Supersonic, Thunder Wave --| |-- Recommended Type: Ground ---------------------------------| o-------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 3rd Pokemon: Steelix -------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Female -------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 35 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Steel/Ground ---------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Sturdy ------------------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry ---------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1470 ----------------------------------| |-- Moves: Iron Tail, Rock Throw, Screech, Sandstorm ---------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire, Ground, Fighting, Water ----------| o-------------------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Quilava -----|----- 34 --| |-- Golem -------|----- 34 --| |-- Hypno -------|----- 33 --| |-- Lapras ------|----- 33 --| |-- Ampharos ----|----- 33 --| o----------------------------o I don't get it, I really don't. She could have two Magnetons right now if she really cared enough, or even just one...oh well... All right, about her Pokemon. They're pitifully weak. She doesn't use any of the Steel-type's potential in this battle. The fact that she uses not one, but two Magnemites proves this. Even before the next two gens followed, there were three other Steel Pokemon that could have been used here: Forettress, Scizor and Skarmory. Anyway, none of that is relevant to the matter at hand, so send out your Ground-type and wipe out her two Magnemites and let us move on. Steelix, the Steel-type evolved form of Onix, can be challenging sometimes, but not here. Iron Tail gets STAB for 150 BP, but is rather inaccurate. I can only imagine that Rock Throw is there for the Fire-types you should be using. It will use Sandstorm as well, so be ready for that. While I do recommend Ground- and Fighting-types as well, Steelix has either the highest Defense stat of every Pokemon in the game or one of the highest - base 200, which is stupidly high - so physical moves may not be the greatest idea. Special moves, however, off it with ease since its Special Defense is only a third of what its Defense is. I've never had too many problems with this battle in either generation of Gold/Silver, and I don't think you will either. If you have any problems with this battle, all I can tell you is level your team up a bit more or start switching it up a bit. This is probably the easiest gym battle in Johto. *To add to this synopsis, I've received word that another good strategy to fight Steelix with is to use a Magnemite or Magneton and use Supersonic and Sonicboom against it until it's taken down. For best results, Burn it first. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o-----------------------------------o |-- Mahogany Gym Leader: Pryce -----| o-----------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Ice-type ------------| |-- Prize: TM 07 (Hail), 4080y -----| |-- Badge: Glacier Badge -----------| |-- HM Usage: HM 05 (Whirlpool) ----| |-- Difficulty: 4/10 ---------------| |-- Level Average: 32 --------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 3013 --| o-----------------------------------o o----------------------o |-- Pryce's Pokemon: --| o----------------------o------------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Seel --------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------| |-- Level: 30 ----------------------------------------| |-- Type: Water --------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Thick Fat -------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 642 ---------------------------| |-- Moves: Icy Wind, Snore, Rest, Hail ---------------| |-- Recommended Type: Electric -----------------------| o-----------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Dewgong -----------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------| |-- Level: 32 ----------------------------------------| |-- Type: Water/Ice ----------------------------------| |-- Ability: Thick Fat -------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1206 --------------------------| |-- Moves: Aurora Beam, Ice Shard, Rest, Sleep Talk --| |-- Recommended Type: Electric, Fighting -------------| o-----------------------------------------------------o |-- 3rd Pokemon: Piloswine ---------------------------| |-- Gender: Male -------------------------------------| |-- Level: 34 ----------------------------------------| |-- Type: Ice/Ground ---------------------------------| |-- Ability: Snow Cloak ------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry -------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1165 --------------------------| |-- Moves: Blizzard, Ice Fang, Mud Bomb, Hail --------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire, Fighting, Steel ----------| o-----------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Typhlosion --|----- 38 --| |-- Golem -------|----- 38 --| |-- Hypno -------|----- 38 --| |-- Golbat ------|----- 37 --| |-- Lapras ------|----- 37 --| |-- Ampharos ----|----- 38 --| o----------------------------o He's higher leveled this time, on level with Jasmine. Altogether he's a bit harder to beat than last time, especially since he no longer relies on the weak Icy Wind (though Hail isn't that threatening either), so be on edge. Seel and Dewgong are more or less the same. Ice Shard is the Ice-type version of Quick Attack, meaning Dewgong will strike first when using it. Both know Rest, which you by now know to be quite irritating to deal with, and can both attack while asleep with Snore and Sleep Talk, the latter choosing one attack at random and using it, including Rest. Both will go down to Electric-types. Piloswine is still as tough and resilient as ever. It's swapped Mist for Hail, Icy Wind for Ice Fang and Fury Attack for Mud Bomb, meaning it now gets STAB for every move it makes. Blizzard is rather inaccurate, but becomes 100% accurate in a hailstorm, which can be brought with Hail. If you chose a Fire- type as your starter, it should be a Typhlosion by now and have access to a few good Fire attacks to deal with this. Feraligatr can get the job done as well. Just use anything that won't get nailed by Blizzard and you'll be all right. Also note that Snow Cloak, Piloswine's ability, raises evasiveness in a hailstorm, so not every move you make will be guaranteed to hit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o----------------------------------------o |-- Blackthorn Gym Leader: Clair --------| o----------------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Dragon-type --------------| |-- Prize: TM 59 (Dragon Pulse), 4920y --| |-- Badge: Rising Badge -----------------| |-- HM Usage: HM 07 (Waterfall) ---------| |-- Difficulty: 8/10 --------------------| |-- Level Average: 39 -------------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 5901 -------| o----------------------------------------o o----------------------o |-- Clair's Pokemon: --| o----------------------o----------------------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Gyarados --------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Female ---------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 38 --------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Water/Flying -----------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Intimidate ----------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1741 ------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Dragon Pulse, Dragon Rage, Bite, Twister ------------| |-- Recommended Type: Electric ---------------------------------| o---------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd and 3rd Pokemon: Dragonair -----------------------------| |-- Genders: Female --------------------------------------------| |-- Levels: 38 each --------------------------------------------| |-- Types: Dragon ----------------------------------------------| |-- Abilities: Shed Skin ---------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 2342 (1171 each) ------------------------| |-- Moves (1st): Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, Slam, Thunder Wave --| |-- Moves (2nd): Dragon Pulse, Aqua Tail, Slam, Thunder Wave ---| |-- Recommended Types: Ice -------------------------------------| o---------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 4th Pokemon: Kingdra ---------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Female ---------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 41 --------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Water/Dragon -----------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Sniper --------------------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry -----------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1818 ------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Dragon Pulse, Hydro Pump, Hyper Beam, Smokescreen ---| |-- Recommended Type: N/A --------------------------------------| o---------------------------------------------------------------o o----------------------------o |-- My Pokemon --|-- Level --| o----------------------------o |-- Typhlosion --|----- 43 --| |-- Golem -------|----- 42 --| |-- Hypno -------|----- 42 --| |-- Crobat ------|----- 42 --| |-- Lapras ------|----- 42 --| |-- Ampharos ----|----- 42 --| o----------------------------o I love it when a full team comes together like mine did. A different battle than last time. She's swapped a Dragonair for a Gyarados, which isn't very threatening as it only has one attack that it can actually use effectively, and that's Bite. That being said, Dragon Rage knocks off 40 HP each time it's used, no matter which Pokemon it is used against, so take Gyarados out quickly. Electric-types, as always, crush it easily. Her Dragonair pair is a bit different now. Both have Dragon Pulse, a powerful Dragon-type attack with 90 base power (plus STAB) and no extra effects. The only thing dragons are super-effective against is other dragons, so whip out your Ice-type that you may have gotten somewhere along the line and take them down. Beware if you're using Piloswine; both Dragonairs can damage it with Fire Blast and Aqua Tail respectively. *NOTE: I received word that both Dragonairs have used Aqua Tail in other games. As I used Ditto and Transform to verify these movesets in another file, I'm not sure what to tell you all on that, but this is just to acknowledge that I have heard about it. Kingdra is a tank of power. All three of its damaging attacks have more than 100 BP - Dragon Pulse because of STAB - and it has no weaknesses you can use to your advantage unless you have a Dragon-type of your own. The only possible way for that to happen is if you traded, or got a Dratini from the Game Corner and brought it here as a Dragonair. Even if you did, Dragon Pulse will crush you long before you beat Kingdra. Worst of all is its ability, called Sniper, which makes every critical hit even more powerful than it normally would be. For this bout, I recommend nothing specifically, as its typing prevents almost all weaknesses. I personally used Ampharos in this battle, so I can tell you that Electric-types can still do fairly well, but tread very carefully. Hydro Pump now has 180 BP thanks to STAB, making it insanely powerful, and Hyper Beam does not fall far behind in power. And with that, the gym challenge of Johto concludes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============================= | 3: ELITE FOUR GUIDE | efg | ============================= o--------------------------------------------o |-- My Team Prior To Elite Four Challenge: --| o--------------------------------------------o----------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Typhlosion ----------------------------------| |-- Level: 50 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Fire -----------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Blaze -------------------------------------------| |-- Item: Charcoal -------------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Flamethrower, Rock Slide, Shadow Claw, Solarbeam --| o-------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Golem ---------------------------------------| |-- Level: 50 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Ground/Rock ----------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Rock Head ---------------------------------------| |-- Item: Hard Stone -----------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Stone Edge, Earthquake, Double-Edge, Rock Polish --| o-------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 3rd Pokemon: Hypno ---------------------------------------| |-- Level: 50 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Psychic --------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Insomnia ----------------------------------------| |-- Item: Black Belt -----------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Psychic, Thunderpunch, Focus Blast, Psych Up ------| o-------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 4th Pokemon: Crobat --------------------------------------| |-- Level: 50 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Poison/Flying --------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Inner Focus -------------------------------------| |-- Item: Poison Barb ----------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Cross Poison, Wing Attack, Shadow Ball, Screech ---| o-------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 5th Pokemon: Lapras --------------------------------------| |-- Level: 50 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Water/Ice ------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Shell Armor -------------------------------------| |-- Item: Mystic Water ---------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Surf, Ice Beam, Body Slam, Signal Beam ------------| o-------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 6th Pokemon: Ampharos ------------------------------------| |-- Level: 50 ------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Electric -------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Static ------------------------------------------| |-- Item: Magnet ---------------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Discharge, Fire Punch, Signal Beam, Charge --------| o-------------------------------------------------------------o A large amount of trading went into making these movesets. All five of his Pokemon know Psychic, and all five are dual-types. However, all five can go down to a Ghost-type, and a Fire- and Electric-type pair can also take him down. Here we go. The weaker of the two Xatu opens the battle. If you remember your battle with Bugsy, you'll remember the powerful U-Turn, which he'll use to damage and then switch out. It also has Me First, which will take whatever damaging attack you use and attack first with it for one point five times the damage. Pray to God you're not using Hyper Beam or Explosion when this happens. Jynx is a bit annoying, but nothing major. Lovely Kiss puts you to sleep, and Ice Punch is pretty standard. Why it still has Double-Slap is beyond me. A Fire-type will put it down fairly easily; just be careful with Psychic. Exeggutor is one of those types that can be exploited if you bring the right Pokemon, like Scyther and a Bug-type move, which will deal four times regular damage. Otherwise, stick with Ghost- or Fire-type attacks. Reflect halves all physical damage. and Egg Bomb has a base power of 100, but is a Normal-type attack. Have some FUll Heals in case it uses Hypnosis. You've seen Slowbro before in Johto. It has Water Pulse, which can confuse you on occasion, Curse, which cuts its Speed and raises its Attack and Defense, and Amnesia, which brings up its Special Defense by a lot. This will make your Ghost and Electric attacks rather weak, so take it down quickly, or use a good physical move that's super-effective. If you can't do either, take it down any other way; Slowbro isn't particularly strong. Last but not least is his stronger Xatu, which has more type-coverage than the last. Aerial Ace never misses. Ever. Ominous Wind is a Ghost-type move that might raise all it stats by one stage. You know by now how irritating Confuse Ray is to deal with. It'll go down the same way the other one did, anyway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o-----------------------------------o |-- Elite Four: Koga ---------------| o-----------------------------------o |-- Specialty: Poison-type ---------| |-- Prize: 5280y -------------------| |-- Difficulty: 4/10 ---------------| |-- Level Average: 42 --------------| |-- Total Experience Gained: 6781 --| o-----------------------------------o o---------------------o |-- Koga's Pokemon: --| o---------------------o------------------------------------------o |-- 1st Pokemon: Ariados ----------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ------------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 40 ---------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Bug/Poison --------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Insomnia -------------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1147 -------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Poison Jab, Giga Drain, Spider Web, Baton Pass -------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire, Flying, Psychic ---------------------| o----------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 2nd Pokemon: Venomoth ---------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ------------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 41 ---------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Bug/Poison --------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Tinted Lens ----------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1212 -------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Psychic, Gust, Toxic, Supersonic ---------------------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire, Flying, Psychic ---------------------| o----------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 3rd Pokemon: Forettress -------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ------------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 43 ---------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Bug/Steel ---------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Sturdy ---------------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1086 -------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Explosion, Swift, Protect, Toxic Spikes --------------| |-- Recommended Type: Fire --------------------------------------| o----------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 4th Pokemon: Muk --------------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ------------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 42 ---------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Poison ------------------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Sticky Hold ----------------------------------------| |-- Item: Black Sludge ------------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1413 -------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Gunk Shot, Toxic, Screech, Minimize ------------------| |-- Recommended Type: Psychic, Ground, Steel --------------------| o----------------------------------------------------------------o |-- 5th Pokemon: Crobat -----------------------------------------| |-- Gender: Male ------------------------------------------------| |-- Level: 44 ---------------------------------------------------| |-- Type: Poison/Flying -----------------------------------------| |-- Ability: Inner Focus ----------------------------------------| |-- Item: Sitrus Berry ------------------------------------------| |-- Experience Points: 1923 -------------------------------------| |-- Moves: Poison Fang, Wing Attack, Quick Attack, Double Team --| |-- Recommended Type: Psychic, Electric -------------------------| o----------------------------------------------------------------o Largely the same battle as in the last version.
