Introduction =============== Polarium is Nintendo's black and white puzzle game for the DS. In the game, you must draw lines to change black tiles to white tiles and vice versa. By changing tile colors, you can make horizontal lines of black or white tiles, which are cleared from the board. The game features a challenge mode -- where you try to gain points by eliminating lines in a Tetris style environment, a puzzle mode -- where you use your mental abilities to clear a puzzle board with a single stroke, and a versus mode -- where you try to be the last man standing as lines continuously fall onto your screen. Polarium stretches your mind while testing your stylus skill, making it a sure delight for puzzles fans of all ages. ========= 3. Lounge ========= The lounge is where you go when you want to hang out, change some settings, view your records, or casually erase your game data. You can access the lounge by tapping on "lounge" in the main screen. Once you are in the lounge, you can select Tutorial, Wireless Link, Settings, or Credits. -------- Tutorial -------- Tutorial give you a crash course of the elements involved in the game. In it you will learn to use your stylus, switch tiles colors, and solve puzzles. Since it is only practice, the challenges are simple and are easy to solve. Tutorial has seven steps to practice, Step 1, Touching, Sliding, Tiles, Outer Frame, Black & White, and Practice. Step 1 is just a boring explanation of what icons do, and practice simply lets you practice some puzzles. All of the steps from Touching to Black & White give you a short explanation about a part of the game, and then they have three challenges relating to that aspect of the game. I considered putting the solutions to the challenges in this guide, but I figured you could solve them yourself. If you cannot solve the Tutorial challenges -- no offense -- you are really bad at puzzles and probably just wasted a lot of money on this game, since you will not be able to solve any of the other puzzles in the game. You could use this guide to solve the rest of the puzzles, but this guide is supposed to provide assistance when you are truly stuck on one of the difficult puzzles -- it is not meant as a crutch for the entire game. However, you should breeze through the Tutorial challenges with little or no trouble. ------------- Wireless Link ------------- By accessing Wireless Link, you can use the DS's built in wireless communication to send and receive Polarium data. In Wireless Link you can send a Polarium demo, you can send one of the custom puzzles that you have created, or you can receive a custom puzzle that another person made. It is a simple -- yet relaxing -- area to visit. -------- Settings -------- Settings is where you adjust the settings (obivously). Inside you can adjust the music from a scale of 1-10, adjust the sound from a scale of 1- 10, and you can turn the backlight on and off. You can also erase all of your data by selecting erase data if you really want to. ------- Credits ------- How much more obvious can a section get? When you select credits, the game will bring up a screen (or more appropriately, screens) giving credit to all the people who helped make the game. Nintendo's credits are on the top screen, and Mitchell's credits are on the lower screen. ============ 4. Challenge ============ Challenge mode is the game mode which requires the most skill. Not only must you think quickly to eliminate the tiles, you must also move quickly to clear the area before time runs out. Once you enter challenge mode, you will enter a fast paced gaming atmosphere. A massive board will appear on the screen, along with many tiles. Your goal is to change the tile colors so that the lines will disappear. Your main goal is to get a high score. While clearing away lines will give you points, it will not give you that many points. Instead, you need to take advantage of special bonuses in order to become number one. The important bonuses to take note of is the All Clear bonus. You receive this bonus whenever you completely clear the board of tiles. The more times you fully clear the board, the higher the bonus becomes. The bonus is multiplied by the number of lines you cleared, so you want to clear as many lines as you can when you earn in. Another important bonus is the Chain bonus. Whenever you change tile colors, you will receive the chain bonus if you cleared at least one line by changing those tile colors. The bonus increases each consecutive time you clear a line. However, if you change tile colors without clearing a line, the chain bonus will go back to zero. The Split and Border bonuses are also helpful, but the Chain and All Clear bonuses are the most important. It is especially important to keep the Chain and All Clear bonuses up. As you advance to harder levels, you will receive an insane number of points for clearing lines if your Chain and All Clear bonuses are up. That means you should clear the board whenever you can, and you should ALWAYS clear a line when you change tile colors. Another factor to consider is the line factor. The Chain and All Clear bonuses are multiplied by the number of lines you cleared, so you will want to get as many lines cleared as you can when you clear the board. The best way to do this is to let two puzzle sets fall before you clear the board. After the initial puzzle consisting of eight lines, smaller puzzles of four lines each will fall from the sky. If you wait for two of them to fall before clearing the board, you will clear six lines instead of a mere three when you draw your line. The individual tiles that you change also contribute to your points, so you will attain a lot of point by waiting for two tile sets at the beginning. Since the puzzles fall fast, you will not have the luxury of waiting until they have landed before drawing your line. When they appear in the sky, begin drawing your line before they fall -- that way you can simply clear the tiles when they fall into your line. With some practice you will be able easily identify what lines you need to draw for which puzzles. As you near the end of the first set of one hundred puzzles, many of the puzzles will have alternating predominately black and white rows. While you could make the effort to make all of the tile white or all of the tiles black, it waste too much time. Instead, look for ways you can eliminate the puzzles with a single, short stroke, making some lines white and some black. Since these puzzles have four line, you will receive many points if you fully clear the playing area when it has two sets on it. During the second stage of the game, small, one line puzzles will fall rapidly. Since these can quickly boost your Chain and All Clear scores, eliminated each one as soon as it falls onto the playing board. The lines hardly ever line up, so it is usually not wise to wait for multiple lines before you clear the board. As the levels progress, the puzzles will become harder and harder to clear. Think carefully, draw wisely, and keep your Chain and All Clear bonuses intact. If you are careful and think quickly, you will do well in challenge mode. ========== 5. Puzzles ========== Puzzle mode is one of the main mode of Polarium; in it you must clear puzzles using a single stroke of the stylus. That requirement makes for intense mental puzzles, but you can solve any puzzle easily using the puzzle portion of this guide. When you select the puzzle mode, the lower screen will display three things: Hint, Puzzles, and Edit. Hint has two boxes next to it -- one with a line and one with two diamonds. When you light up the box with a line by touching it, the game will show you the last line you drew if you fail a puzzle and try it again. If you light up the box with two diamond, the game will show the starting and ending points your line should have, you just have to wait a while. The Edit menu allows you to create your own custom puzzles. The more puzzles you complete, the more puzzles you can create. Inside Edit there are a variety of options, most of which are self explanatory. If you happen to need assistance, the instruction manual will provide all of the help you need in that area. ------- Puzzles ------- The main part of puzzle mode is, of course, the puzzles. There are one hundred puzzles for you to complete in a single stroke, and their difficulty level vary greatly. If you ever get stuck on a puzzle, you need not look any further for help. The following portion of the guide has answers for all 100 puzzles. After each puzzle number, there is a table that represent the puzzle. ::: represent gray tiles, 000 represent black tiles, and represent white tiles. I do realize that the black and white tiles will switch positions occasionally. When I put down a puzzle, I usually tried to make it so that the black tiles were in the minority. Since the answer line will work no matter which color individual tiles are in a certain puzzle, it is okay if your puzzle is a color inverted version of the one pictured. Below the original puzzle, there is another table under puzzle solution. The table represents the same puzzle only this time with the line drawn. The rules are fairly simple for understanding the line, so listen carefully. X?X = Double Xs represent the starting point of a puzzle, this is where you should start your line. ^, v, = The four arrows indicate which direction your line should go after you reach a certain space. If a square has a ^ it, that indicates that you should go up a tile after reaching that square. Q = Q is where the line should end. Once you reach the space with a Q on it, tap the box and finish the puzzle. I fully recognize that these are not the only answers to the puzzles. Each puzzle has a variety of lines that will complete it. I also recognize that these are not necessarily the best answers to the puzzles. However, they are answer that will work, and that is all that matters.
