i can't pick up a potato sprout wit the y button! Also, why can't I revisit villager's homes?

I've started the game and found that time only passes when doing actions (e.g. chopping down trees).
I think I've run out of actions though. I've sown all seeds I could, I'm near broke and time just won't pass ingame.
