What do chaos emeralds do? and what is the other items besides emeralds and materials

To get every chaos emerald, find Johnny around shallow areas of the sea chart

to get sol emeralds you have to find the small islands and then they get turned into
missions
the other items besides emeralds and materals are medals. You have to compleat the game
to unlock all the other missions, most of the missions are timed
