chapter 10.2 can any one help i am stuck at the river were crates fall at diffrent levels got lyra to the other side were their are two pads to lower the crates but cannot get the bear accross.

Am on my way to the restricted section of the library and have come accross 2 clocks, when you go near the clocks, it says activate, but they dont seem to do anything. Am really stuck as servants keep stopping me and sending me back to the begining please help
