How do you unlock all the animals in The Sims 2 Apartment Pets?

I keep on trying to brush pets in the spa but everytime i do it doesn't work. Please can you give me instructions on how to brush the pets? P.S polease not text speak and please no swearing!

Every time I visit this puppy it says he is disheartened and needs to be played with. I have played every game game, petted him until hearts are flying all over the pace and I still cant get rid of the boken heart symbol. Any ideas please?
