(Put on the Scrubs, Man) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Hey there, everyone! Welcome to my third (yes, third) FAQ! It's lucky Trauma Center that's getting the write-up this time, and it's going to be GREAT. Oh yeah. Watch out this time! So, the history behind this game... my sister had heard about it from one of her friends, and begged my dad to buy it for her. I tagged along and looked over the game, not really sure WHY it was that she loved it so much. Then I played it, and ever since then... I've been hooked. This guide is as a result of that minor obsession (I SHALL DEFEAT YOU, X1 KYRIAKI!) ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 1.2 Copyright Info (Don't Copy My Research, Man) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Dudes, I am totally okay if you want to print this out and give it to all your friends because they are just as obsessed with TC as I am. But claiming it as your own just won't fly. If I find a guide online for this game (or for Second Opinion, for that matter) that sounds a lot like me, I will kill it. Then, I will hunt you down and attack you with the awesome power of the Internet. Geeky rant aside... please don't steal. I worked really hard on this guide. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 1.3 Contact Info (In Case You Need A Second Opinion... Or Just * * Some Help) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ DISCLAIMER: No, I don't own Second Opinion, although I wish I did. So if you need the GAME, don't ask me. Everyone knows what a second opinion is. Well, doctors do, at least. Please, if you have any questions on anything at all - an operation or whatever - please feel free to drop a PM to Narphinean (if you're on Neoseeker) or an email to nimbusunshine_cello@cox.net. Regarding the latter... if you don't post 'Trauma Center Help' or some such language in the title, I WILL NOT READ IT! I have my computer's health to protect. You know, sending viruses and scams in email is considered a federal offense, too. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 1.4 Update History (My Research Is Up-To-Date, Man) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ January 3rd, 2009 -- First version of the guide is UP, with basic info on all operations, character guides, and all administrative sections. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 1.5 Disclaimer/Background Info (...Man?) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ NOTE: This game takes place in the future, and therefore all surgical practices, tools, medical terms, and organizations should be considered fictional unless known otherwise. Yes, I know this game deals with alien-like parasites that create colorful tumors and little spider spawn. Don't get on my case about it. Honestly, I would have chucked it if it had just been a game made up of "let's remove this guy's appendix" and "let's give this guy a vasectomy!" (I would have been SO disturbed if I had ever been asked to perform a vasectomy.) So, as said above, you're really a doctor in the near future (2018, in fact). You're fighting medical terrorism of the future, and therefore must complete operations as they do in the FUTURE. That's all. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 2.1 Prologue (Help... I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up!) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ As the intro apparently goes in the instruction booklet, the story's like this: "In the year 2018, mankind has overcome a number of diseases once thought incurable. Cancer, AIDS and TFTA are nearly things of the past. However, a new plague has emerged to threaten humanity... ...it's called GUILT (Gangliated Utrophin Immuno Latency Toxin) Very little is known about this new disease, but rumor has it that GUILT might be the first biological weapon used for "medical terrorism." Our only hope may lie in Caduceus International--a semi-covert organization designed to research and treat the world's most "untreatable" diseases. Caduceus has managed to keep GUILT hidden from the public so far, but how can they possibly eliminate a disease they don't even know how to treat properly? Meanwhile, Derek Stiles has just completed his residency and joined the surgical team at Hope Hospital, where routine clinical cases are about to become something far more serious..." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 2.2 Characters (This Is Who Will Be Saving Your Life... * * Hopefully) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Hopefully. Okay, I'm only going to be providing light overviews of each character for now. Maybe I'll add more info later, but really, shouldn't you be focusing on the patient, Doctor? (Spoilers do occur. Watch your step.) Name: Derek Stiles Age: 26 Position: Protagonist, Newly-Made Surgeon Derek is a pretty awesome dude. As you might have guessed, he's the character you play as, so you'd better like him. As the story goes, Derek has just completed his residency and has been appointed as a surgeon at Hope Hospital. His father died of an "incurable" disease, and so Derek vows never to lose a patient. Oh, and he finds out he has a mystical ability called the Healing Touch. Niceness. Name: Angie Thompson Age: 21 Position: Nurse, Your Conscience Please, if Angie annoys you at first, give her some time. Chances are she'll grow on you. She arrives after Derek's current assistant, Mary, moves to another hospital (curses on you, ma'am). What can I say? She just doesn't like Derek's cockiness the first half of the first chapter, and after that she's all but best friends with him. She's also one of my favorite characters. Why? She's German. No, that's not the only reason. I just like how she keeps her head in all situations that don't involve people she cares about. And she randomly appears during operations, too. Watch out for her. Name: Mary Fulton Age: 39 Position: Nurse, The One Who Left Poor Ickle Derek She irritates me with her quiet soft voice sometimes, but she helps you get through your first few operations without much trouble. A kind, heartwarming woman she is. Interesting she is not. Name: Greg Kasal Age: 35 Position: Senior Surgeon Oh yeah, this guy is awesome. He mentored Derek (so you'd better love him), is always cool, calm and collected, and can always save you from yourself whenever you're failing an operation (you WILL have to start over, though). He also had some... history?... with Cybil Myers. More on her later. Name: Robert Hoffman Age: 62 Position: Head Honcho (AKA Hope Hospital's Director) (AKA Future Caduceus Head Director) (AKA Principal) He could be the grandaddy of everyone. He used to be a surgeon too, but he gave up operating for some reason (hmm, maybe because he had the Healing Touch too?) He likes to give advice, and separate people who are fighting (for instance, Angie and Derek). Later, he takes a job as director at Caduceus in order to further watch over (stalk?) Derek. No, he really takes the job because a friend of his told him to before he died. You'll operate on him soon. The following don't come by for awhile, for they are staff of Caduceus: Name: Sidney Kasal Age: 35 Position: Director of Caduceus Yep, Greg has a twin brother. Sidney's not as cool as his brother in my opinion, but he still adds a cool "Matrix" factor to the game once you enter Caduceus. Name: Stephen Clarks Age: 42 Position: Caduceus' Head Surgeon This guy reminds me of a teddy bear, and for good reason: you wouldn't meet a kinder guy anywhere. He only appears periodically, but when he does, he always has something to say that'll help you out (as in, "I'll go save the lives of those people over there. You save the lives of THESE people.") Name: Cybil Myers Age: 34 Position: Anesthesiologist People call her the "Iron Vixen". And I have never, ever seen her break down in the ENTIRE game. I think she's a robot. Still, though, she's human. You have to operate on her later. Name: Victor Niguel Age: 26 Position: Head of Research and Development, Pain in the Ass (?) Ah, don't let him get you down. Under the superiority complex, he can be very helpful. He creates medicines to make your life easier. Name: Tyler Chase Age: 26 (?) Position: Surgeon Tyler is the laid-back mood-booster of the party (that is to say, Caduceus). His little sister, Amy, is currently suffering from GUILT, and Tyler has become a "death doctor" in order to put her out of her misery if the need arises. My verdict: Oh, come on, man! Name: Leslie Sears Age: 26 Position: Nurse, Tyler's Assistant Leslie seems to have about the same laid-back, friendly attitude as Tyler. She looks after Amy. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 2.3 Tools and Tricks (General Help That Will Make Lifesaving * * Even Easier!) * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ All right, here is a lit of the tools you will be using in the game. They are listed from the upper left-hand corner to the lower right- hand corner. Laser - The laser is used for removing tumors, as well as killing the Kyriaki and stunning the Savato. Watch out: apply too long and it can damage skin! And believe me, healing all of those laser wounds is a PAIN. Antibiotic Gel - This is your best friend, after the sutures and the stabilizer injections! Just slather this on little wounds and things that need "cooling" down... if you know what I mean. If you don't, just wait... you'll need that word of advice. Drain - Used to drain blood, vapor, water, and anything else that needs draining. Be careful when pulling things up into the drain; you'll need to draw the fluid upwards carefully in order to avoid pushing it back down. Forceps - You'll use these so much, don't be surprised if they become permanently attached to your hand. They pick up lots of things, from membranes to GUILT (when it needs to be extracted). Hand/Healing Touch - These use the same button. Once Healing Touch becomes available, press it twice to get the Healing Touch. The hand is used to massage things into place, and you should know what the Healing Touch does already. Ultrasound - Use this to find tumors and Kyriaki under the surface. Be careful: your patient loses vitals slightly with every touch of the ultrasound. Scalpel - Use this to carve your initials into your patient - just kidding. Use this to cut things on your patient, such as the initial incision and the skin covering a tumor or GUILT. VERY important tool. Sutures - If you aren't having much success with the tool now, tough it up. You'll need it for almost every single operation, and you'll only have to do it faster and more accurately as time goes on. Stabilizer/Other Liquids - This is your OTHER best friend. Injecting the stabilizer will increase your patient's vitals, and other liquids will allow you to destroy GUILT and such. Prepare to learn how to inject quickly! Bandage - Used at the end of every operation, and ONLY at the end. This seals up the initial incision (after you've stitched it) and ends the operation. You WILL fail if this is not placed by the end of the timer. And I've got to give you some general guidelines so that you can enter every operation a prepared as possible: 1) Healing Touch can only be used once per operation, and it also lowers your score, so only use it when your assistant specifically hints at using it (EX. When Angie says "Maybe... if you used your power...") 2) Whenever you read an operation's instructions in this FAQ and see this symbol: | | | | | | | | (A stupid pause symbol. Don't bug me about it.) | | | | | | | | STOP what you are doing and read the entire set of instructions before you begin the operation. 3) If you are running REALLY low on time, it's possible to skip the antibiotics as you're bandaging the wound. Depending on your speed switching from one tool to the next, this could possibly save your operation. (Note that you WILL lose points.) 4) If you are failing an operation over and over again, you might want to consider taking a break for a little bit. Ditto for if you are getting angry or frustrated. You don't REALLY have to save the patient's life right away. They'll wait for you, however long it takes. 5) Read the storyline! Not only is it entertaining, but it adds more understanding to some of the operations. You'll need some of that knowledge. If you have failed an operation and want to skip over the preceding dialogue, however, just press Select. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 3.1 Chapter One: Dr. Stiles * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ All right, here we are at the start of your medical career. The operations here are mostly tutorials for the first half, so expect to be forced to go through them slowly. I'm also adding in the storyline chapters, although I'm not copying the conversations word for word, just putting in a summary. In this chapter, we'll be talking about many fascinating topics, including: 1) Tutorials are annoying because... 2) Nurse vs. Nurse (which one is more fun to have during operations?) 3) McDonald's, the place for doctors fallen from grace (hint: Derek) 4) Glass is scary when it slashes your patient's heart in two. 3.1a Prequel (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Nothing much to add to the plot here except a foreshadowing for the game to come. Moving on... 3.1b Standard Procedure --------------------------------------------------------------------- Storyline first. Basically, you meet everyone and learn that apparently, at Hope Hospital the new guys get to do all the important things (like surgery), while the more experienced surgeons (AKA Kasal) sit around and enjoy life without pressure. Ahhh. You receive your first operation, and BOOM! - you're off to prep with Mary, your lovely (boring) assistant. Patient: Turk, Kevin Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 80 Max Vitals: N/A Problem: The guy's got glass in his arm, and lacerations. Mary tells you just about anything you would ever need to know about this operation (including how to do it to yourself... just kidding), but I'll give you some tips: 1) Make sure the glass is being pulled out in the same direction it's facing. Otherwise, you lose vitals. Yes, you can fail the first operation EVER. 2) Suture FAST, not slow. I don't care if you can't draw a perfect zig-zag, and neither does the game. Don't stress out. 3) Start the bandage at the very tip of the incision, pull along the incision, then lift the stylus ONLY when there is no more incision to cover. And do it quickly, too. Listen to the triumph music and bask in the glory of your first operation (believe me, you'll kill to hear that music later). That's pretty much all for this operation chapter. Well done! 3.1c Standard Procedure 2 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Through this storyline element, we learn: 1) Derek sucks at listening. 2) Derek sucks at reading. 3) Derek sucks at apologizing. 4) Derek sucks at sleeping (!) 5) Mary's doing something, and she wants to treat Derek like a toddler and won't tell him what. Oh dear, dear. Looks like we have a tumor to remove. Actually, this is one of my favorite procedures to do, so don't worry, it's not hard or anything. Patient: Laurie, Noah Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 99 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: Guy's got a big hulking tumor in his stomach. Let's cut it out. Once again, Mary explains (babbles?) through the whole thing, so here are a couple more tips: 1) Don't spam the use of the ultrasound. It won't hurt your patient too much, but it'll slowly decrease his vitals. 2) When cutting the tumor away, if you miss some dots, don't keep slashing all over your patient. Simply make little dashes across the dots you missed. This'll save on vitals. Yay, praise! Now let's move on and see what Mary's big secret is. 3.1d A Farewell --------------------------------------------------------------------- WAHHH, Mary's dumping Derek for another hospital (and her HUSBAND!) Derek will be sad and helpless, Greg and Hoffman won't care, and you'll need to remove some more tumors. Life sure sucks right now. Don't worry, one of the best TC characters is right around the corner! For now, let's give Mary a great last operation! Patient: Spence, Neil Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 99 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: Um... tumors? Lots. have fun. Hey, looks like tutorial operations are over! Don't get too excited, though, you just won't have little arrows pointing out what you should use. You're on your own now. You'll neeed to inject some anti- immflamatory medication, select the stabilizer and the little bottle will appear. Now, there are three tumors this time. One tip: 1) Don't cut them all out at once. Focus on one at a time. Otherwise, you'll have some major vital drops on your hands. Don't worry. They won't explode or anything. (That's not until later, my friend...) Hooray (?), you're done and Mary says how awesome you'll be without her. Derek is a sad puppy. Aww. 3.1e Nurse Angie (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Storyline Chapter. Say goodbye to Mary and her boring-ness. If you liked her... too bad! The new nurse should be arriving any minute now. Wait... yep, here she comes. She gets both DS screens because she's so important. (And Mary is not.) Yes, this is Angie, your nurse for the rest of forever now (well, at least for the rest of the game, and the next game). Enjoy her, you're stuck with her. Personally, I like her spirit. For now, she's a snobby bitch. But don't mind her. Greg and Mary are happy, and that's all that matters. The end. Next surgery, please! 3.1f Singing the Blues --------------------------------------------------------------------- You're late. Again. And hello, did you not realize that your nurse is positively beautiful and you want to impress her on her first day? Of course not. So she yells at you a bit, then bothers to brief you on your next patient. It's a VERY neurotic guy. We learn another thing during this little cutscene: 1) Derek sucks at talking to frightened patients. (Good going.) You'll learn that you have to laser away some polyps in the throat, and you'll be using the magnification tool for the first time. Good luck. Patient: Cox, Elliot Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 99 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: This guy's got POLYPS! And there's a lot of blood around. Don't worry, although you'll be changing your field of vision a lot, stuff doesn't happen while you're not watching it. That'll happen later, though, so get ahold of the tool now. Two tips to help you get along: 1) The circles to game wants you to draw must be drawn VERY quickly. It shouldn't take more than about a half a second. 2) Once you get an "OK" for removing a polyp, remove the laser IMMEDIATELY or else risk creating a pool of blood. They're a pain to clean up. You're all done. Mr. Cox can go sing, Angie can be disgusted - again - with Derek for trying to get gifts off his patients, and it's time to move on to the next operation. 3.1g A Real Doctor --------------------------------------------------------------------- You know that whenever Angie calls you "Mr. Stiles", things are going wrong with your relationship. Just a little note. Anyway, Greg's off doing "something" (hmm, sounds like an unnecessary vacation to me), so you're going to be doing the operation today. What. A. Surprise. Today you're doing what seems to be another tumor removal. If only it weren't for Angie and her "nuh-uh, Doctor, there's something else going on!" Let's ignore her. Patient: West, Sean Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 70 Max. Vitals: 80 Problem: A "strange" tumor in the intestine. Ignore Angie at all costs. You hear me? This'll be the first time you won't have those cozy 99 Vitals to deal with. Feel scared? You should be. Anyway, let's begin. Angie will want to stop, but Derek's in charge, and frankly, he likes the feeling, okay? No real tips to add to this, seeing as it's much like Operation 3.1d. Oh, one thing: 1) Angie will NOT be right until the next cutscene. Which, by the way, is awful. not only does Derek dump Angie and the patient to go out drinking with some people, but he can't even do the actually IMPORTANT operation because - finally - another doctor gets to do the work! 3.1h Downpour (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hoffman's office. Hoffman gives you a "you know, I sympathize, but I feel I must smack you before I let you loose on unsuspecting patients again" speech. What makes it worse is that the girl of your dreams shows up and basically tells you that you should have worked at McDonald's instead. Jump to the Citywalk. (Oh, God, don't tell me he's been drinking again!) Derek will be all mopey, and only snap out of it when he hears about an opening at McDonald's. NO. He'll hear about a horrible crash, and realize that he's the only thing standing between those people and the Grim Reaper. So he heads back. (McDonald's can wait.) 3.1i Life or Death --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hahaha, the Ice Queen shows her cracks. She'll tell you her story (sobbing) about how one of the guys is suffering cardiac arrest and she couldn't revive him. You must save him and calm Angie down! That's just cruel. (No, I just meant the Angie part.) Patient: Flynn, Omar Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 01 Max. Vitals: 30 Problem: He's dying, you idiot! He has glass in his chest, glass in his heart, and no pulse. SAVE HIM. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | STOP. This operation really isn't all that hard when you know what to do. So I've had you stop for a minute and listen. First of all, most of this operation is about removing glass. Remember Operation 3.1b? Simple simple stuff. But wait! Your patient is in cardiac arrest. Take these steps: 1) Smear gel on the bar until it turns green. 2) Drag your stylus over the small bar, keeping with its movement. DO NOT take your stylus off the screen until you are finished. Vitals will jump to 30. You still have low vitals. So your process should be like this: (HINT: DO NOT MISS.) 1) Suture all lacerations. 2) Inject one shot of stabilizer. 3) Remove one shard of glass. Heal wound. 4) Repeat until finished. Now, you'll have to get into the heart. Cut 'im open. Now, there's a lot of glass. Repeat the process above, being VERY careful to move quickly when healing wounds. Don't let the vitals get under 10! Once you're done, he'll flatline again. Revive him again, remembering the gel on the rectangle first. HOLY CRAP THAT'S A FREAKING BIG SHARD OF GLASS. Don't panic, though, just remove it carefully. Missing will pretty much kill him, so don't miss. Suture the laceration. AGH! A huge laceration appears. Don't worry, though, because you're about to see why Derek is freaking awesome sometimes. YEP. I'm talking about the STAR. It'll be drawn and time will slow down, allowing you to suture the laceration quickly without the patient dying first. You've saved the day! Now Angie'll HAVE to make out with you. Um, no. She IS pretty happy that you saved him, though, and... so I detect a smile? And KINDNESS? No, that must just be me. So go take a nap, relax, wait for the hangover to wear off... no, I'm just kidding about that. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 3.2 Chapter Two: Healing Touch * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Congrats on completing your doctor training! This chapter, we REALLY get into some hot topics, among which are: 1) The Healing Touch (it bags babes... or just patients) 2) Hoffman (and why he refuses to operate) 3) FANCY HOSPITAL! (named after something Greek... oh my word!) 4) The arrival of GUILT (it sorts of just busts its way through EVERYTHING.) 5) Suicidal people... and why you should save them anyway. (God, this makes no sense) So let's begin this wonderful journey, hmm? 3.2a Dormant Ability --------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek wonders why that pretty little star appeared during the last lifesaving escapade... and why he didn't decide to become a hamburger flipper. Moving on. Time to meet your next patient. Patient: Pratt, Jesse Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 80 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: The guy has thrombi in his spleen. If you don't know what thrombi are, they're a pain in the ass. If you don't know what a spleen is, it's a highly unnecessary organ that does not need saving at all. I won't put in the pause symbol here, but you need to know what you have to do before you're faced with the thrombi. So read a little, okay? Your process of removing thrombi should go like this: 1) Ultrasound the thrombi. 2) Stop it with the foreceps. 3) Cut across it. 4) Suck that sucker up with the drain. Oh yesss. 5) Heal the little wound. *LITTLE CHEAT: Sometimes, if another thrombi comes along the vessel while you're sucking the first thrombi up, you might actually be able to suck up more than one thrombi at a time! But if it doesn't work, don't waste time trying to get it to work.* After a while, you will be ATTACKED by a bunch of thrombi at once! EEK! But don't worry, because happy little Mr. Star (or should I say "Dr." Star?) will come along and help you out. Get rid of the rest of the thrombi. Tah-dah! You're all done. Stitch that man up. After the operation, Angie will talk about you being awesome in the O.R., and Greg will be all suspicious and ask for footage of the surgery. Wait, it was being taped...? 3.2b Master Surgery (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, I've decided to take pity on you for skipping through the storyline at warp speed and have enclosed an excerpt of the script. Hoffman: You have the Healing Touch, Derek. Derek: Well gee, sir, but I'm not really that good at healing people... just ask Angie. Hoffman: No. I mean, you have a mystical ability that allows you to heal people at unprecedented rates. I like to call it "mass- production" healing. Derek: ...WTF is this? The X-Files? Anyway, Hoffman will warn you about the responsibilities associated with the HT, you'll say "Yeah, whatever, old man," and he'll tell you to forget about your new mystical ability. The end. 3.2c Striving for Asclepius --------------------------------------------------------------------- Storyline. We learn one thing about Hoffman: 1) He used to be like Derek. That is to say, he had the HT too. WHOA. Anyway, that's about all the important information I can think of for pre-op storyline, so let's get on with our operation: Patient: N/A Time Limit: N/A Starting Vitals: N/A Max. Vitals: N/A Problem: Derek is an overachiever and wants to perfect the HT. Hahaha, I tricked you into thinking you were doing an actual operation! Anyway, your mission is simple. A star pattern will appear on the screen. Practice drawing it. It'll get fainter and fainter, and eventually disappear. That's it. Enjoy your drawing lesson. That's it. Now, let's move on to a REAL operation... 3.2d Awakening --------------------------------------------------------------------- Not much pre-op storyline to go over, so let's just get down to it. I can tell you that you WILL hate this operation the first time through, as you're still getting the hang of the Healing Touch. Patient: Kovac, Mario Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 70 Max. Vitals: 80 Problem: Aneurisms on the intestines! They're like balloons, except when they pop, they release a large cloud of blood that saps your patient's vitals. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | STOP. This operation is FRUSTRATING if you don't know what you're doing right away. Trust me, my mom played this operation and it was a disaster. Saddest thing is, it's nowhere near as hard as the operations you'll be doing in, say, the last chapter. Let's begin. Your process for treating the first aneurism should be: 1) Quickly inject brown serum into the blob until the cutting dots appear. 2) Cut around the blob. Remove it. 3) Drain the blood. 4) Connect the two halves of the vessel with the forceps. 5) Suture the vessel. Now, listen. Don't zigzag with them. Just slash ONCE across the middle, where you connected the two halves. Now, you'll have to deal with two at once. Heal one, and two more appear. Now, here's where the trick to winning this operation comes into play: *TRICK: Shuffle between the aneurisms, injecting sedative into all of them and cutting them when they get there. LEAVE THEM THERE. Don't remove them until every aneurism has been cut.* Now, FIVE will appear. WATCH OUT! You can't heal them normally, so you'll need the HT. Sadly, this time Dr. Star won't come along unless you ask for him. So, let's summon the little guy. Press the hand button twice, then draw the star and you'll get it. After that, healing the five aneurisms should be MUCH easier. Don't let your guard down, though, they can still pop, your HT does run out eventually, and you can still kill your patient or run out of time. When you're done, Greg will begin to babble on about how Derek shouldn't rely on the HT too much because it doesn't win babes (just kidding), but Derek suddenly passes out. Oopsie. 3.2e Paying the Price (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- You wake up in Hope Hospital, Angie will be by your side (hell yeah, nice way to wake up), and the sun is shining. Greg still echos the "Dude, you just can't use your fancy ability anymore" speech from Hoffman, but do you care? No. So Greg amends his speech to say "okay, only use it when you need it, dude". MUCH better. 3.2f Just Let Me Die --------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh yeah, my favorite patient is here. She's in bad shape right now, so let's get her better before we meet her. Patient: Reid, Linda Time Limit: 3 Mins Starting Vitals: 45 Max. Vitals: 65 Problem: Lotsa lacerations in the lung, including a new one that requires a lot of work to heal. Read on. You'll need to work quickly, both because of the shortened time limit and because of the horrible lacerations. Speaking of which, they're pretty wicked. What drugs are you on, girl? Because your lung's taking the beating. Take care of the lacerations with blood pools first. Drain the blood, then select the forceps. Only one side of the laceration can be pulled over, so select carefully to avoid getting a miss. Then, suture it up. Repeat for the other two. Suture the other lacerations as you normally would. But first, shoot her up a few times with stabilizer, you'll need it. After everything's healed, stitch her up. Done... for now. Well, looks like this girl's a suicidal nutcase. Still, that doesn't explain her strange beaten-up lung. We'll still have to figure that out. 3.2g Reasons Why (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek walks into Linda's room, in order to check her out. Well, she's pretty screwed up, and wishes she could have just died. So much for your spectacular operation. Enter Angie. She starts yelling at Linda, giving a whole "hey, you're not the only patient in this hospital who needs saving, and if you want to die go do it and stop bothering us" rant. You go, girl. Exit Angie. Now, Derek will share a story about his cat who got run over, his OWN suicidal thoughts (just another common theme of childhood nowadays, I guess), and his mother's SLAP! to snap him out of it. I'd say Derek's getting better at soothing patients. Linda'll be much better about the whole "I want to die" thing, and we can move on to the next operation. 3.2h Reconciliation (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- FOOLED YA! We've got another storyline chapter to go through. Crap, huh? Looks like Linda's parents have arrived, and they're all currently having a tear-jerker reunion. Angie and Derek have escaped from that. Thank God. We do learn something VERRRY creepy, though: 1) There's a "death doctor" out there. If you don't know what a death doctor is, I pity you, because the phrase is pretty self-explainitory. Look up 'Euthanasia', however, if you want more info. Nevertheless, this is rather scary news. Well, let's move on. 3.2i Please Let Me Live --------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't worry, you will ACTUALLY get to do an operation this time. But let's get through the storyline element first. Well, it looks like we might have been right about Linda's drugs: she has a little something in her blood that's kinda sorta way over the recommended dosage. Suddenly, Derek learns that Linda's in danger! This time, she actually wants you to save her (hooray...?), so let's get going. Patient: Reid, Linda Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 80 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: The stuff you did earlier has undone itself. Boy oh boy. Well, you know how to heal her already, so go do it. HOWEVER, leave one of the big ol' lacerations. Shoot her up a few times with stabilizer, if she's low on vitals. Then heal the big ol' laceration and get ready to boogie. Yes, you did just see a laceration create itself. Ultrasound. HOLY CRAP THERE'S SOME LITTLE BUG. Cut it out. This, folks, is your first encounter with GUILT. Introduce yourself to it, then focus on killing it. Get the laser out and incinerate the thing. ...Another one? Two, actually. Cut them out and kill them too. Don't heal all of the lacerations yet, leave one until you've gotten Linda shot up a few more times with stabilizer, then heal the last one. Time to end this. A bunch of lacerations will appear. Ultrasound the sucker, and you'll see that it's a LOT bigger than the last ones. It'll take three times cutting it out and lasering, so work fast. Congrats, you're done and now you can seal Linda up for good. Greg will go all FBI with "this is confidential information, guys," and Derek will be just as confused as ever as to what the little bugger was. (HINT: It was Kyriaki.) 3.2j Caduceus (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't groan at me, I don't write the storyline chapters. Yes, you have another one. In this chapter, we learn: 1) Hoffman's office = principal's office with medical stuff hanging around. 2) GUILT: nasty stuff. It has a big formal name, too (Gangliated Utrophin Immuno Latency Toxin), but do you really care? Nuh-uh. 3) FANCY HOSPITAL! And you're going. 4) Letters are great plot devices to open up sinister ideas. 5) Medical terrorism... never before has it been so "buggy"! 3.2k For Everyone's Sake --------------------------------------------------------------------- Operating on a little girl today. Oh, don't get so upset, she'll be fine if you don't kill her. She needs a new heart valve, and you're the man to do it (because Greg needs to go do some "stuff", apparently). Let's get started. Patient: Chalke, Elisa Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 99 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: Little girl needs big surgery. Read: heart surgery. Be careful on this one. It won't be as hard as real heart surgery, but it definitely requires great skill and concentration. Cut her open. The poor little girl's heart is in bad shape, and so you'll have to massage it first. Don't forget to add gel. Now, you'll need to cut into her heart. Upon arriving, you'll notice the big pool of blood. Drain this, and you'll see the valve. There's a cutting line; go ahead and cut. Be aware that if her heart starts flatlining again, you'll have to stop what you're doing and get it calmed down again, at the risk of damaging your patient even more. Once you've cut the bad valve away, grab it and drop it in the tray. Grab the new valve, drop it in, and stitch it in place. (I normally just slash all over the place until it sounds the OK. But you can do whatever works for you.) Suture the wounds you've made, then stick the bandage on. Afterwards, you'll learn something about Derek: 1) His daddy died when he was a little kid. It makes me want to give him a hug... Derek will then go into Principal Hoffman's office and accept the job at Caduceus. Hoffman will give a whole "you won't be happy AT ALL, dude" speech, but Derek will not care. Time to go, man. Chapter Three awaits us. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ * 3.3 Chapter Three: Caduceus * ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ So Derek's on his way to said fancy hospital, Caduceus, and Angie is too. Uh-huh. That IS suspicious. Anyway, watch out! There are some scary times ahead. In this chapter, among other things, we touch on many more great topics, including: 1) Who the death doctor is (SLASH! It just hits you) 2) The little sisters of doctors (they're cuter on the outside) 3) Bombs at conventions are just stupid. (I mean, seriously? We might learn something from these...) 4) A magical boy in the heart of Africa, who is always happy. (*happy pose*) 5) We hate operating on people we know. (We never wanted to see their insides...) 3.3a New Beginnings (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sounds like Derek and Angie are having their first day at Caduceus. Let's go spy on them. Caduceus, by the way, is an awesome place. The doctors there can do just about ANYTHING, without the government's approval. Can you say "ex-per-i-men-tal"? And look at Derek and Angie's new uniforms. DEFINITELY cooler. One question, though: what's with the headset on Angie? Is she going to be taking calls during surgery, or what? Yes, that's Greg's brother you're seeing. This is the serious twin. You'll hate him. No, you won't. But I just don't like him as much as Greg. *frown* Introductions start: Richard Anderson, Secretary of Health. Fat dude. Stephen Clarks, surgeon. He's cool. Bear-like, almost. Hagrid without the beard. And the gross cooking. And the obsession with dangerous creatures. Okay, Harry Potter rant over. Cybil Myers, anesthesiologist. If you don't know what an anesthesiologist is, it's the person who puts you to sleep and keeps you there. I think I saw her at McDonald's once... Introductions over, for now. Derek and Angie must do paperwork. Yawn. Let's skip forward. Hey, is that... nah, it can't be. An actual FRIEND of Derek's? Yep. Meet Tyler Chase. He's awesomely great, and he and Derek have known each other since med school. We learn something about Tyler right off the bat: 1) He's awaiting a shipment of potassium chloride, whatever that's for. 3.3b GUILT --------------------------------------------------------------------- Time for your first operation at Caduceus. They're starting you off easy here, with some happy little Kyriaki bugs. After a bit of review on WHAT Kyriaki is with Sidney (gee, I forgot all about my past week in surgery ALREADY, sir). Then it's time to meet your patient. Patient: Reyes, Jack Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 99 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: The little buggers are acting up again. Destroy them, okay? Ouchie. Looks like they really went to town on the intestines here. Fix up all but one of the big wounds and all of the smaller lacerations. Shoot him up with some stabilizer, then heal the last big laceration. Time to party. The process for killing them is the same as before, and the only difference is that there are more of them this time. Just heal when you need it, and kill when you can. That's all. Let's close him up now. Praise floats around, Angie kisses Derek (no, but he can dream, right?), and your operation is done now. You're actually done early, so... free time? 3.3c The Darkness Within (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- You DO get free time from operating, but that's just so you can read through this storyline chapter. Sorry. We learn some very interesting things about Tyler during this scene: 1) He "gave someone peace". Suspicious much? 2) He has a little sister, Amy, who is pretty much permanently hospitalized at Caduceus. 3) He's the death doctor. (DUN DUN DUUUUN!) 4) He might want to kill Amy if it will end her suffering. (Oh my God, I feel so deeply disgusted right now, dude.) And we learn one thing about Derek right now too: 1) He's not gonna put up with that crap. (YESSS MAN.) 3.3d Something Precious --------------------------------------------------------------------- Agh, looks like Amy's having some problems right now. Meaning: the GUILT is attacking her and she's currently dying. Joy. Derek will be all, "Dude, we need to go save her," and Tyler will be all, "Nuh-uh homeboy, she's gonna die... or rather, I'M going to KILL her to put her out of her misery." (I hate this dark aspect of Tyler's character. Thank God it goes away.) Amy wakes up and knocks some sense into Tyler (not literally) and he'll decide to help you after all. Thank you, Tyler. Amy has Deftara. No, you don't know what that is yet, so that's why I'm going to tell you about it. Deftara is a pair of little slug-like tumors that combine and - here's the kicker - EAT each other. Ew much? Well, your job is to suck the stuffing out of them whenever they combine, and laser away any little tumors that appear. Ready? Let's ring up the stats: Patient: Chase, Amy Time Limit: 5 Mins Starting Vitals: 75 Max. Vitals: 99 Problem: Girl's got some fancy moving GUILT tumors in her. Remove them, please. Let's cut her open. Those spots you see? Yeah, they're the tumors you need to laser off. Do them all, and then give Amy some stabilizer. Here comes the GUILT. Hi-hi, Deftara. This is mostly a sit-and-wait sort of operation. Keep your laser equipped and burn away any tumors that appear. When the two get together to commence their feast, drain the life out of them as long as you can. *NOTE: I've heard that you can chase the Deftara together by probing a tool around them. It hasn't been really successful for me, though, so I recommend not trying it.* Keep going at the draining until the two stop. A cut line will appear. You know what to do. Cut them quickly, because a lot of little tumors will appear. Once the big tumor is completely cut, the little tumors will stop multiplying. Remove the tumor, slap on a membrane, and gel and massage. Heal all the little tumors. Next up, there'll be two Deftara. Repeat the same process, using gel to keep the Deftara of the same color away from each other. Don't forget to drain, laser tumors, and inject stabilizer too. Quickly. Once everything's gone, breathe a big ol' sigh of relief. Don't fail now. Seal her up and bandage her. So, Tyler gives up on his Death Doctor thing, and plans to rewrite his paper on euthanasia. Hooray for him. 3.3e International Conference (Storyline) --------------------------------------------------------------------- I know what you're about to say. Yes, another storyline chapter. Read on. Hey, it looks like we still have someone to meet. Ah, one of my favorite characters. Here he comes. Meet Victor. He's a snotty little research nerd, but he turns out all right in the end. Oh. Bye Victor. (He only came in for papers? Geez, that was rude.) Anyway, Sidney wants you to attend a convention, where you would discuss your awesome operating skills (and Dr. Star, of course). You can't get out of it, and Dr. Myers is going with you. Tough. At the conference, we learn something a little funny about Cybil: 1) She and Greg had some "history". Ohhh, snaps. Emotional love story. I wanna hear. *gets out popcorn* |
