Review of Duke Nukem 3D 2. The Normal Enemies 3. Beating the Bosses 4. History 5. Sites that have Permission to use this FAQ 6. FAQs by Me 7. Credits ---------------------------- 1. Review of Duke Nukem 3D ---------------------------- Duke Nukem 3D is a classic of 3D shooter games. Although the graphics are old by modern standards, the sound isn't great, and the AI isn't the best, Duke Nukem was once a tremendously popular game. Many people still play it just for fun. Graphics 6/10 The graphics are nowhere near modern photo-quality pictures, but they aren't bad, considering the game was made years ago. Most of the graphics are pretty good, however. The enemies are all nicely drawn, and the bosses are excellent. Sounds 4/10 The sounds aren't that good. Some of the sounds, such as chaingun fire and the GRR-GRAAAUH noise the Protozoid Slimers make, are good, but the voices and a lot of other sounds aren't up to spec. Background Music 7/10 The background music is excellent. It fits perfectly with the level design and gameplay. Gameplay 7/10 The gameplay is quite good. The way you interact with the environment, the way things happen, it all fits together well. Level Design 8/10 Like the gameplay, the level design is really good. The levels are designed so that you must go back and forth and obtain keys, open side doors, flick switches and keep your eyes peeled for the garage door they opened, trek halfway across a level to open a door with a switch then go back, make your way through a maze of ventilator shafts, find a hidden passageway underwater while dodging through gigantic turning gear wheels, and so on. You keep on finding new things in old areas, and you often have to backtrack. The level design is well done. AI 6/10 Compared to the AI of recently made games, the AI isn't that good. You cannot, for example, sneak up on enemies and make sure they don't hear you. But for its day, Duke Nukem 3D had good artificial intellegence for the enemies. ---------------------------- 2. The Normal Enemies ---------------------------- Assault Trooper These guys are your basic enemies -- green-suited aliens who fire lasers at you. They can attack from the air by using jetpacks. They're pretty weak and a single shotgun blast will take them down, as will a little bit of chaingun fire or one blast of most other weapons, except for the pistol and Duke's foot. You can even take them down easily with a few pistol shots. They may drop pistol ammo when they die. Assault Captian These aliens are exactly the same as the Assault Troopers, but they wear red suits and can teleport using their wrist-mounted Phase Induced Teleporter Device (PITD) gadgets to teleport to a nearby location to escape from Duke or to launch a surprise attack. They may drop pistol ammo when dead. Pig Cop Distinct-looking creatures, the Pig Cops are enemies that you will find frequently. They deal a great deal of damage with their shotguns, so head-on combat with them is not easy. A couple shotgun blasts should kill them, but don't mistake their crouching stance from their falling down dead stance. A single blast with an RPG or pipe bomb blows them up, and a little chaingun fire works pretty well. A pistol is not a very good weapon to use here, since the Pig Cop will get in a good shot or two that hurts you a bit. Pig Cops may drop either a shotgun (which will contain 10 shots minus the number of shots the Pig Cop has fired) or their used body armor. Recon Control Vehicle (RPV) These are small flying alien crafts driven by special Pig Cops. They attack with the side-mounted laser cannons on the craft. These crafts are pretty easy to take out or run from. A couple shotgun blasts and the vehicle will explode. Unfortunately, though, the Pig Cop pilot will have survived the crash, so be ready to take it out too. Octabrain These octopus-like alien creatures are dangerous, as they often appear out of nowhere and like to keep in small groups. They can attack from the air or they can attack underwater, and emit mental energy blasts at you that do a lot of damage. Luckily, as long as you aren't too close, these blasts shouldn't be that hard to dodge. When close up, Octabrains bite you. You can take them down with a few shotgun blasts, or blow them apart with an RPG rocket. Enforcer These enemies are everwhere in all episodes except the first one set in L.A., and they carry chainguns. They often jump down behind you or in front of you, so be cautious, especially when you enter small rooms; they may jump down in back of you when you enter. Blast them apart from a distance with RPG rockets, take them down with a few shotgun blasts, lure them and blow them apart with a pipe bomb, shrink or freeze them and walk up and stomp or kick them to finish them, lure them through a laser tripbomb, or kill them with the chaingun, but do it fast because they often come with companions and are able to move about quickly and they dish out a modest amount of damage from their chainguns. They may drop chaingun ammo or their chaingun when killed. Sentry Drone These are annoying airborne death machines. They watch, hovering, for Duke to come into sight, then they make for him at top speed. When they crash into you, they do a lot of damage. They take quite a bit of shots before they blow up, too, so your best bet is to blow them up with an RPG rocket at a distance. You can also wait behind an open door for them to come at you, then close the door in their faces and hope that they crash into it. Assault Commander These are tremendously fat aliens who fly around on anti-grav spin-decks. They may shoot rockets at you. Your best bet is to blow these guys up with an RPG rocket at long distance, or shoot him quickly with the shotgun at short range, and run like crazy around a corner or sidestep when you see a rocket on its way, although by then it's probably too late. Protozoid Slimer Annoying is the best word to describe these green bits of live slime. They crawl up to you and try to suck out your brains through your nose. When you see one's chomping teeth in front of your face, it's already hurt you a bit. It jumps up and down from the floor to the ceiling to move around and make itself hard to hit, but these guys are fantastically weak. Just kick them and they die. You can shoot them when they're on the ceilings to kill them. Battlelord In addition to the fact that one of them is the boss for episode one, weaker Battlelords roam other episodes, and they are by far the strongest normal enemies in the game. Your best bet if you don't have the devastator is to blow them out of existence with seven or eight RPG rockets. You can also set a bunch of pipe bombs (after setting a pipe bomb, press 6, then you can set another one; you can set as many as you want, and they will all blow up at once when you finally push your thumb-held button), lure him to the pipe bomb pile, and blow it. Another good weapon to use against it is the devastator. In fact, that's probably the best weapon to use against it. Freezers, shrinkers, and expanders have no effect whatsoever on these creatures. Battlelords carry powerful chainguns and throw mortar rounds. Pig Cop Tank This enemy, who only appears in the The Birth episode of the Atomic Edition, is a Pig Cop driving a tank. Most of the time, these guys are actually not much problem. Blast them from afar with RPG rockets or keep at them with the devastator. When one turns towards you, it's a pretty good idea to get behind a corner fast. Protector Drone These enemies only appear in the The Birth episode of the Atomic Edition. They're skin is leathery and mainly brown, and they are very distinctly shaped. They can emit shrink rays, jump high, land right in front of you, and try to scratch your eyes out. You best bet is to blast them apart with the RPG, but I usually just use the chaingun cannon on them; it pretty much stops them from moving and does the job quickly. You can also use the shotgun and pipe bombs. Be weary of those shrink rays. ---------------------------- 3. Beating the Bosses ---------------------------- Touch any boss and you will die instantly. Battlelord The boss of episode one, L.A. Meltdown, is a large alien sporting strong body armor and a dangerous chaingun. He also throws explosive mortar rounds. The best thing to do when you see one coming is to run, fast. His chaingun is powerful, and the best way to escape it is to run around the perimeter of the room until the boss stops firing and comes after you. When this happens, turn around and hit him with as many RPG rockets as possible (you won't have the devastator yet). Weaker relatives are found throughout the other episodes. Overlord The Overlord is the boss of Lunar Apocalypse. He fires RPG (rocket propelled grenade) rockets at you. Sidestep as he starts firing, then, when you near the wall, run ahead and loop around him, possibly into the room where he came from. If you're there, you can hide behind the wall until he stops firing, then step out and do some major damage with the devastator. You can also stay on the surface of one of the (or the, I forget how many ther are) small pools of water on the left side of the huge room which you dropped down onto, then hop out for a surprise attack, go back in, wait for him to leave, hop out, attack, etcetera. The devastator and RPG work best. The Cycloid Emperor This boss is the leader of the alien forces on Earth, and he is found in Shrapnel City. He is huge and powerful, and holds a deadly devastator. The moment you start, run away and jump up onto the platform that surrounds the football field. Run around and collect ammo if you need it. Dodge the devastator shots by running whenever he starts firing. Sidestepping can also be done, but not for long, or one of his blasts will find its mark. Whenever he stops firing, turn to him and use the devastator. The RPG can also be used. When at close range, The Cycloid Emperor will shoot mental energy blasts like the ones Octabrains use, but he shoots them in swarms. You can use the two metal antenna-like objects found in the field for shields, but don't stay there for long periods. The Queen The leader of all the alien forces, The Queen is the final boss, found in the The Birth episode, which is only available in the Atomic Editon version. She walks around in her underwater chamber with hordes of Octabrains and Protector Drones around her. As far as I know, she only uses one attack, in which blue lightning appears on her body and shocks the area around her. Dodge the shrink rays of the Protector Drones, and keep attacking The Queen with your most powerful weapons, hopefully the devastator and RPG. ---------------------------- 4.
