Walkthrough - Beginner TipsFALLOUT 2: GENERAL HINTS FOR BEGINNING v1.02 ============================================= CONTENTS: --------- 1. Introduction 2. Hints 3. Contact 4. Special Thanks 5. Bibliography 6. Legal Notes 7. Version History 1.INTRODUCTION: =============== Q: What are these hints good for? A: They are intended to help the first-time players who want some NON-SPOILER hints at start. Q: These hints are really without spoilers? A: They are only very minor spoilers about what Fallout 2 has to offer in terms of gameplay, the same you get when checking Character Creation screen or game's manual. Also it's one moderate spoiler about ammo (which has a notice). Q: I know a tip which isn't listed... A: You can send it if you like. My E-mail address is listed at the Contact section. 2.HINTS: ======== PATCHES - The best patch is Killap (the official 1.02 isn't required) which should be installed when starting a new game. Then, I recommend the High Resolution Patch. OPTIONS - If game's difficulty is set to "Easy", you get a 20% bonus to non-combat secondary skills comparative to "Normal". At "Hard" you get a -10% penalty. - Setting combat difficulty to "Wimpy" - instead of "Normal" - will make the enemies receive a penalty to perception (the chance to hit). Also they do around half damage when attacking. If you change it to "Tough", the enemies will receive a bonus to perception and take more targeted shots. Their combat damage will be increased by nearly 50 %. - It's recommended to save often. Save before a battle and after. You can always take a critical shot which bypass your armor and kill you no matter the stage of the game. - Save before you try stealing. Although the Steal skill may be high, it's always a 5% chance for being caught. - Also do this before you level-up - if you have NPCs and you are above level 6. It's a chance that they will level-up with you also. This will happen 5-6 times for almost each NPC in the game. If they don't, you can reload and try again. - Following the previous idea, it isn't needed for a NPC to be in your party when you acquire experience points, only when you level up. This will happen when the LEVEL button appears at the corner of the screen. - Save before you leave a city. Never know what random encounters you'll get on the road. - Also it's recommended to save before you try to lockpick something, it's a chance to critically fail and jam the lock (it will last until midnight) - It's good to do this before an important conversation, to explore all options. Have fun! - Save before taking drugs, bad things can happen. - It's a good idea to search everything. Search the boxes, containers, dead bodies, some of them arein locations obscured by walls. Also if you take something from a house with people around, they may become hostile, so save before and use sneak when necessary. COMBAT - Use burst weapons and targeted shots to kill bad ***** quickly. The burst shots do good damage, stay next to enemy and try to catch more in the cone of bullets. Be sure your NPCs aren't in the way. - Best targeted shots are in the eyes - around 60% more the normal critical shot chance. A critical hit worths 2-4 times the damage of a normal hit and can bypass enemies' armor. - If an enemy has felled down, the chance to hit him has increased by 40%. So targeted shots can be used at that point. - Some ammo penetrates armor well, but some doesn't. Also it's best NOT to use the AP ammo, it's bad implemented in the game. Only some types are good, but they are quite rare. SPOILER regarding ammo: Good AP ammo: Rocket AP and Needler AP. END SPOILER - Secondary Skill Doctor can be used to heal crippled limbs. - When enemies turn hostile, you can hit the A (attack) key immediately, to get the first shot. Also hit A before a battle to highlight the locations of your enemies. Hit ENTER to end the attack state. - If an innocent is killed, it's possible to turn a city hostile to you or lose quests. - If you find some melee enemies hard, wait until they almost reach you, attack, then retreat a few Action Points. Most of them can't move enough to reach you and to attack as well. - You can keep some one-handed weapon in inventory in case one of your arms gets crippled. - Stealing can be an option for grabbing some rare stuff, especially from important NPCs (use this skill only from behind). - If you find a quest specific battle to be hard, an option is to steal enemies' supplies first. - You can also do this from some shops if you're sneaking. When you rest 3-4 days, leave the map and return, most shopkeepers will be resupplied. PARTY NPCS - Tell your NPCs to stay close to you; they have a habit to charge alone and get killed. - In combat, usually the bad guys will want to hit you instead of NPCs, so if you run around a corner, your buddies can fire at will until the enemies reach your character again. - It's not recommended to give to a NPC two weapons for use, in combat they'll switch between them in the worst possible way. - Also give to a party member only the type of weapon who is most skilled with; talk to him to find which. - Don't give to your team burst weapons - they'll shot you or just kill each other. - You can use the MOVE command when a NPC is blocking your way. DRUGS - It's good to use drugs only when needed, at specific battles or quests. - The same drug can be used only 2 times in a row to stack its effects. - Party NPCs don't get addicted and you can "use" some on them too. Still don't give them drugs to take at their leisure, b/c some bugs can appear. WORLD MAP - Don't leave NPCs or stuff in a random map location. After you go, they are lost forever. - It's a good idea to explore the 8 squares around a city location in world map, before moving to the next destination. You can get encounters to fight for experience and various stuff and money. Also in some random locations, you'll see caves which are ready for exploring. Good Luck to you, Vault Dweller! 3.CONTACT: ========== 1.
