MNBA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION/AUTHOR'S NOTE [JKAQ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for reading my FAQ, I really appreciate it. I downloaded the demo of Max Payne 2 a while back, and I loved it so much I played it to death. I noticed that there were absolutely no guides covering the demo of the game, and I thought what the hell, I might as well make one. Now that it's summer, I have been itching to write a FAQ to fill up my Contributor Page on GameFAQs (yes, I am a KB whore, ). All other games I have were either FAQed to death, or I don't know enough about to write a quality FAQ for. Then I decided, hey, what the hell, may as well write a FAQ for this, since no one else has. And here we are. Please note that this guide covers the commercially released DEMO of Max Payne 2, and is not a full-fledged guide for the entire game. If you want a walkthrough for the full version, your best bet is to check out all the great FAQs at GameFAQs. Max Payne 2 was a pretty tough game to write a FAQ for. When I write my FAQs for PC games, I like to play part of the game, ALT+TAB out, and then write in what I played so far. Unfortunately, this game froze up whenever I pressed ALT+TAB, which left me no choice but to bring my old, Windows ME, 800MHz Celeron PC out of the closet and hook it up. This way, I can play and write at the same time, which means I won't forget or skip over something as if I were to recite from memory. I'm still playing this game (I mean demo) often, it's a really great way just to have some fun and cheap laughs. I plan to buy the full game someday, but being a broke thirteen year old who can barely afford one game a month doesn't help. Hopefully, I can make a FAQ/Walkthrough for the full game some day, maybe just maybe. This is currently my third FAQ ever, and in my opinion is the best one yet. I have two other FAQs, a good full-fledged walkthrough for a crappy, old Scooby- Doo game for the Genesis, and an in-depth FAQ for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 which is basically a cheap KB filler (I didn't say anything...). I have yet to write a BIG guide as of now (150+ KB), which I hope to do someday soon. A couple months ago, I started a huge FAQ/Walkthrough for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 for the PC that would have easily exceeded 200-250KB (90KB so far, and I had felt I had hardly done anything). But I got hit with writer's block, and began to gradually lose motivation. I began to procrasinate. "I'll work on it later" I told myself (yeah, right). As time went by, I worked on it and less and less, and unsuprisngly I gave up on it altogether. In fact, the same thing almost happened to this very guide. I forced myself to sit down and work on the FAQ, but I quickly got distracted by something else. Today, Thursday, nearly a week after I originally began to write the guide, I finally got motivated again and began working hard. I really have no idea what or how I got motivated again, but I'm not complaining! Anyway, enough of my useless rambling, Now let's get this FAQ started! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEGAL AND COPYRIGHT INFORMATION [RTYZ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE READ! First version is out. Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - Version 1.01 - Fixed several glaring typos. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS [JECV] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTION: Where can I download the demo? ANSWER: Just about on any gaming website on the Internet. Your best bet is to simply do a Google search for "Max Payne 2 demo." For the lazy, here are some exact links, please note that a couple of these may require an account in order to access the download: http://www.rockstargames.com/maxpayne2/mp2_downloads.html http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/133340.shtml http://www.3dgamers.com/games/maxpayne2/ http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4097 http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=14468 QUESTION: How can I configure the controls? ANSWER: Head into the Options menu, then click on controls. This guide assumes you are playing with the default setup. QUESTION: Is Max Payne 2 gamepad-compatible? ANSWER: I don't believe so, but if you want my opinion, you wouldn't want to use a gamepad anyhow. Max Payne 2 was clearly designed with the keyboard and mouse in mind, and wouldn't play well with a controller. This is why the console ports of this game weren't received all that well. QUESTION: What's in the demo? ANSWER: There are three levels, but if you ask me it's more like two since the first hardly counts. It's pretty much a string of cutscenes that explain the storyline. There are also a couple bonus gameplay modes as well. QUESTION: How do I use a Painkiller? ANSWER: Tab or Backspace. QUESTION: How do I make Max roll? ANSWER: Hold down the direction you want to roll and press the space bar. For instance, if you want Max to roll to the left, hold down the A button and press the space bar. QUESTION: Do the cheats from the full game work in the demo as well? ANSWER: Yeah, some of them. Check out the cheats section for more information. QUESTION: Does the infamous nude woman easter egg work in the demo version? ANSWER: Unfortunately, no. Believe me, I tried and tried. Every time I tried to scroll through the skins the game crashed before I could get to it. And that happened on each of three levels available in the demo. :/ QUESTION: Why doesn't your guide cover the bonus gameplay modes like New York Minute and Dead Man Walking? ANSWER: Quite frankly, I didn't feel like it. I never really play those modes, so I pretty much suck at them. Even so, there's a bunch of FAQs already covering them. Who knows, one day I may actually include them, but it isn't likely. QUESTION: So is this guide based on playing with cheats? ANSWER: Not really. I write each section assuming that your playing the game (err... demo) without cheats, but the strategies still pretty much apply. QUESTION: Where is *insert weapon here*? It's not in the Weapon section of your guide! ANSWER: Chances are you are using the all weapons cheat. I decided not to cover guns that are only obtainable from cheating (such as the sniper rifle) because they're not really legit, and the vast majority of people reading this guide are playing without them. However, once you beat the game, *cough* I mean demo, you should use the cheats, simply they make the demo a lot more fun. Also, if you do notice that I don't cover a weapon that is actually obtainable without cheating, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. QUESTION: Is this guide based on the Detective or Hard-Boiled difficulty mode? ANSWER: A little bit of both, but mostly Detective. You need to complete the demo on Detective mode in order to unlock Hard-Boiled, and chances are you will not really need this guide after you beat the demo once. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WEAPONS AND ITEMS [UXPH] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are quite a number of weapons in the demo, but unfortunately only a few guns (w/o cheating of course). You'll have to utilize every single one in the right situation if you want to be successful. If you pick up two of the same gun, you often have the ability to hold both of them at the same time, one in each hand. The biggest advantage of this is that you now clip is twice as big. For example, the Ingram normally has a 32-bullet clip, but if you are using Double Ingrams the clip will double in size to 64, because you now have two guns instead of one, obviously. Please note that you have the ability to hold two guns only with smaller weapons such as pistols, and not larger weapons like shotguns and rifles. Weapons that you can hold two of are denoted with an *. Everything is in alphabetical order. 9MM PISTOL* ---------- Max Ammo: 16/144 (32/128 with Dual) Weapon Type: Pistol Weapon Description: A standard police-issue 9MM pistol. Has a decent clip, (32 bullets with Dual), but lacking in firepower. It often takes more than two bullets to successfully eliminate a foe. When compared to the Desert Eagle, the gun is a little less powerful. However, it is definitely not a useless weapon because you often have to use it in the second and third missions when your Ingram runs dry of ammo. The gun rivals the Desert Eagle because, while the Desert Eagle is slightly more powerful, it is louder than the 9MM and has a smaller clip. You start with this gun in each mission, and nearly every enemy you kill has ammo for it. Needless to say, you shouldn't have any trouble finding this gun or running out of ammo. DESERT EAGLE* ------------ Max Ammo: 10/90 (20/80 with Dual) Weapon Type: Pistol Weapon Description: The Desert Eagle is one of the two pistols in the game. It's best quality is its firepower. I may be wrong, but I believe that it is slightly more powerful than the 9MM pistol. On the other hand, it has a small clip, and is very loud. Both pistols are okay, and neither one is vastly superior to another, but I personally perfer the 9MM. You can find the Desert Eagle only in the very last level of the demo. I believe one of the bad guys near the end of the level carries it. Also, I'm pretty sure that there is only one Desert Eagle in the demo, but you can have dual with cheats on. GRENADE ------- Max Ammo: 10 Weapon Type: Other Weapon Description: Nearly every shooter out there has the grenade, and Max Payne 2 is no exception. The grenade is helpful when facing a large group of thugs that are all near each other. A couple baddies carry some. What else is there to say? INGRAM ------ Max Ammo: 32/288 (64/256 with Dual) Weapon Type: Submachine Gun (?) Weapon Type: Simply one of the better guns out there. The Ingram is common, especially in the last level of the demo, and is an extremely effective gun. It's pretty much all around, and is strong in all categories. It can quickly take down a group of enemies, has a good size clip, and is somewhat quiet. If you have this gun, by all means use it, I highly recommend it. KALASHNIKOV ----------- Max Ammo: 30/270 Weapon Type: Rifle Weapon Description: One of the better guns of the game. This Russian rifle is nearly a cross between a pistol and a submachine gun, it just took all the good qualities from them and left out the bad stuff. My only complaint is that the clip could have been larger. Yes, this rivals the Ingram as the best gun in the game indeed. Unfortunately, this gun only appears towards the end of the very last level, and by the time you get it there's only a few bad guys left. MOLOTOV COCKTAIL ---------------- Max Ammo: 10 Weapon Type: Other Weapon Description: Pretty kickass. Throw a molotov cocktail at an unsuspecting thug and watch him burn in flames. Unlike the grenade, the Molotov Cocktail explodes immediately when it hits the ground, which is useful, but I don't think it has as good as a range. I personally perfer the Molotov, just because it looks so damn cool. PAINKILLER ---------- Max Amount: 10 Item Description: I guess this is the only "item" in the game, but it is sure as hell helpful nonetheless. Painkillers are pretty much health, and if you see these always pick them up. Use Tab or Backspace to use them. They look like little perscription bottles. That's really all there is to it. PUMP-ACTION SHOTGUN ------------------- Max Ammo: 7/133 Weapon Type: Shotgun (obviously) Weapon Description: Frankly, I don't really care for shotguns, nor do I recommend ever using them, but if I had to pick one of the two available, it'd definitely be this one. Shotguns usually kill enemies in one or two shots, but the penalty is long and constant reloading and very loud noise. The gun isn't that bad in one-on-one sitiuations, but leaves you open and defenseless during it's constant and long reloading. Also, like all shotguns in video games these days, shotguns are terribly inaccurate, especially at long range. You shoot what appears to be several bullets at once, but they more often than not they completely miss the target, so the one-hit-kill advantage is pretty much null. Still, the Pump-Action Shotgun is infinitely better than our next contestant, the Sawed-Off Shotgun... SAWED-OFF SHOTGUN ----------------- Max Ammo: 2/138 Weapon Type: Shotgun Weapon Description: This is, hands down, my very least favorite weapon in the game. The clip is a whopping two bullets, which means you have to constantly reload. It is plagued with all the disadvantages as the other shotgun, but as far as I can tell doesn't add any positive aspects. In my opinion, you should only use this gun if all your other guns have run out of ammo and this is all you have left, which is an extremely unlikely scenario. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WALKTHROUGH [HJKL] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ahh, now it's time for the meat of the guide: the Walkthrough, right? Thought so. Click on New Game at the main menu, and off we go. However, before we begin, let me give you a few basic tips that will tremendously help you in the game, not to mention keep you alive. First off, always reload your weapon when you have the chance. This applies to any shooter. The last thing you want to do is walk into a room with six enemies only to discover that you only have two bullets left in your clip. This means that you'll have to reload, giving your foes the oppurtunity to do some damage. Also, try to stand behind crates or other objects when being shot at. They will provide you with some protection and may help you dodge a few bullets. Next, I strongly recommend that you head into the options menu and turn up the brightness. The default setting makes everythin very dark, and it's easy to miss some items. Lastly, throughout the demo you will often see some green gasoline cans. When you come across one of these babies, feel free to shoot them a few times until they explode, killing all nearby enemies in the process. This can get you out of a sticky sitiuation, not to mention save you some ammo. Alright, now let's get started! PART 1, PROLOUGE ---------------- Start a new game, and watch the opening cutscene. It starts out as a comic book-like cutscene where Max mysteriously talks about his love and his past. What's going on? Your guess is as good as mine. As said, I don't have the full game unfortunately, so if it's not in the demo I don't know about it. After that, you see a badly-injured Max awake in a deserted hospital. He's hearing voices and hallucinating. He's obviously not in good condition. Anway, is this game creepy so far or what? When you gain control of Max, head foward through the doors, and head through the doors on the right. In here, head left towards the large double doors and watch Max experience another frieghtening hallucination. Past the double doors, head through another large set of double doors, which are to the right of the exit doors. In here, Max will examine the body of a slain security guard and take his piece, which is a standard nine-millimeter pistol. Uh-oh, someone's coming! A masked terrorist shows up and tries to kill Max. Quickly dispose of him with your newly-found pistol. This is the only enemy the level, so don't fret if you take some damage because you're not familiar with the controls yet. Head through the door from where the bad guy came, and Max experiences yet another hallucination. For reasons unexplained in the demo, Det. Winterson, whom I assume is Max's partner, shows up and briefly talks to Max. Continue on through the next door and head right to the area with the big Reception sign overhead. When you reach the vending machine, turn right and head towards the elevators. The doors will automatically open, so go inside and press the button. Max's captain shows up, and is quickly killed by another terrorist. He says something about how Max killed a woman. Meanwhile, a gasoline can thingy gets knocked down, which blows up the elevator. After the cutscene, head through the doorway up ahead and Max will discover the body of his partner, Det. Winterson. You're done with this chapter. From what I can tell, the police surround the hospital and order Max to come out and surrender. PART 1, CHAPTER 1: ELEVATOR DOORS --------------------------------- Max tells how he avoided trouble thanks to the help of some guy named Alfred Woden (remember, I only have the demo, so I really have no idea whose these people are). Max feels guilty and ashamed over the whole ordeal, leaves the DEA, and rejoins the NYPD. While patrolling the neighborhood, Max overhears a report from the dispatcher. Shots fired at a wearhouse. Recognizing the wharehouse's address, Max responds to the call. Turns out that the wharehouse actually is owned by his friend Vladimir. Max pulls into the parking lot and hears shots fired from inside, and hastily calls for backup. It's a possible hostage sitiuation. Max has no choice but to bust on in all alone. Our very first REAL level. Excited yet? Once you gain control of Max, head to the northeast section of the area, into a small alley. Keep on going until you reach a small set of stairs. Climb them, and enter the door. You are now inside the wharehouse, so head all the way left, then right past the boxes. You'll notice a small office cubicle with a light inside. Approach towards it, and you'll hear what sounds likes gunfire and the cries of hostages. But don't worry, it's just the TV. You can shoot it if you want. :P Continue on past the high shelves and boxes until you reach a large, steel door. When you go near it, a cutscene will occur. A cleaning janitor will open the door, but Max will get the jump on him, and order him to take him to the criminals. Follow the janitor around the next area until he opens the door. (Listen to what he says, it's pretty funny). After he opens the door and says "After you, detecive," shoot him in the head. Trust me. The "janitor" is actually one of the thugs in disguise. Turns out everyone's masquerading as janitors. Head through the door that was just opened, and turn to your left to see another baddie. Take him out, and take his pistol that he dropped. Congrats, you know have dual 9MM pistols. Head around the large shelves and towards the large gray, steel door in the back corner. Activate the greenkeypad next it to it and the door will open. There's nothing to do in this room, so keep on heading forward through the doorway. Now, proceed with caution. You'll be able to hear a couple guards up ahead making small talk. Take them both out. They both have pistol ammo. Now, head through the greyish-brown, normal-size door in the upper left corner of the room. In here, head through the door on the left side of the room and head up the stairs. You'll see another janitor at the top, so take him out before he notices you. His buddy will rush in, but you should easily be able to take him out before he sees you as well, and grab their ammo. Head into the room that the second guy came from, and Max will comment on how this room appears to be a gun storage, but everything as been swiped. Head through the next door. In here, turn left and listen to the answering machine on the desk. Afterwards, head through door right next to the desk. You're now in a small hallway. Go through the door on the right. In here, ignore everything else and walk straight ahead. You'll be able to hear a couple people shouting, so approach the door and another cutscene will occur. Two bad guys are holding a woman hostage, but they kill her before Sam has a chance to do anything. When the cutscene ends, immediately take out the two guys. Head into the room where the hostage was killed, and take the bad guys' ammo. One of them carries an Ingram, which I personally recommend you equip. There's also some painkillers and ammon on the desk and shelf of the far side of the room. Head back out of the small room, and immediately turn left to see a couple thugs. Quickly take them out. Head through the door they came from, but this time turn right and go through the previosuly-unlocked door. In here, immediately turn right to see a trio of thugs in the far side of the room. Quickly take them out. One of them has a pump-action shotgun. Head through the doorway from which they came from, and walk across the elevated pathway until you reach the elevator, in which a cutscene will automattically occur. You'll see Mona Sax swiftly kill three goons, but she'll run off before you can talk to her. Collect the dead guys' ammo, and press the elevator button. When it arrives, head inside and go down. Leave the elevator, and you will now be in a hallway. Head right towards the doorway. You'll hear Max comment on how his backup has arrived. Past the doorway, another enemy will be to you right. Quickly kill him before he can get to you. Head through the large doorway located behind the thug you just killed. In here, you'll see a balded janitor crash a yellow vehicle into the wall. Quickly shoot him. Look right, and you'll see a trio of baddies running away. Shoot at them. Chances are at least one of them will run away, so follow him through the next doorway. However, don't go through just yet. Shoot him from the room you're currently in. Now, head through the doorway, and you'll see the giant shelf right in front of you begin to collaspe. If it hits you, you die no matter what, so IMMEDIATELY head left, and don't stop until your safe. The reason it collasped was because a guy crashed a vehicle into it, so be ready for him once he emerges. Once everyone's dead, head through the grey door in the upper left corner of the area. You're winner! Max will try to stop a couple guys from escaping, but fails. Detective Winterson arrives in the knick of time and saves Max's ass. Back at police headquaters, Max gets an earful from his boss, who blames Max for the death of the hostage. Then, Max and his fellow detectives will discuss the case together. PArRT 1, CHAPTER 2: A CRIMINAL MASTERMIND ---------------------------------------- First off, let me tell you that this is the best mission yet. Be warned, however, as it is the most action-packed. Max decides to visit his friend Vladimir to discuss the case, but when he arrives he discovers that Vlad has been cornered inside the house by a slew of thugs. It's time for Max to save the day. Please note that the guns and ammo you had in the last mission is carried over to this one. When you gain control, head up the flight of stairs to the left, and you'll discover a trio of baddies attacking some of Vlad's bodyguards. Quickly dispose them before they notice you, then take their ammo. One of them has an Ingram. You'll now head Vladimir speaking over the loudspeaker. Listen in, he says some kinda funny stuff. Afterwards, head up the new flight of stairs, which is located to the right of a ladder. As you climb the stairs, be alert of a bad guy around the corner. He only has a mere pistol, and you should be able to eliminate him before he has the oppurtunity to harm you. Continue up the stairs and through the door, and a cutscene will occur. You'll see Mike the Cowboy single-handedly eliminate a group of bad guys. Mike is a good guy, so refrain from shooting him. He'll introduce himself, and says that he is Vladimir's friend. Now, there are a few things you should now about Mike. Mike will follow you around for the rest of the mission, helping you take down bad guys along the way. If you shoot Mike, even accidently, he'll start shooting you and won't stop 'til your dead. Therefore, if you do shoot him, kill him immediately. Frankly, I don't think Mike is all that helpful. The AI in this game isn't all that special, and Mike will stupidly rush out and blow your cover, or get in your line of fire. You should easily be able to beat the mission without him, but it's your choice. Let him follow you, or kill him. There's no penalty if Mike dies. Whichever you choose, continue up the next flight of stairs. In the next room, there's a TV playing and a bunch of dead guys that Mike had killed. There's nothing to do, so head towards the back of the room and then turn right down the corridor until you reach a doorway. There's a trio of bad guys inside, whom are collecting several weapons. Take all three out. You can let Mike go in to kill them, but if he is not available you may want to use a Bullet Time, which you can activate by right clicking. Once all three are dead, collect their ammo, and grab the Ingram ammo inside the crate and the two Painkillers on the tent-thingy. There's also some Desert Eagle ammo on the shelf in the middle of the room, but you don't have the gun yet, but pick it up anyway. Head towards the back of the room and you'll be able to hear a couple guys talking up ahead. Before you can reach them, they close the door. Quickly head up the stairs and take the guy in blue out when you reach the top. Collect his ammo, and go through the door he came from. Now, I strongly recommend you use a Bullet Time now, and the Ingram is the weapon of choice. You'll enter a large room, and there's a total of at least five or six guys in here. Unfortunately, I can't tell you the exact location of the bad guys because it's different nearly everytime I play. But quickly take out any guys you see, and head towards the back of the room. There are some stairs here, and a couple bad guys. Do not jump down, since it'll greatly damage you. Take out the bad guys below, and climb down the stairs. Take everybody's weapons, and the Kalashnikovs inside the crate. Now, head down the long hallway that leads to a brown door. There's several painkillers located on the small shelf on the right wall. Before you head through, it is recommended that you save. Head through the door, use your last bullet time, kill the guy with the shotgun to your left, then immediately turn around and kill the guy in blue. Don't worry if you die a couple times, just reload your save. You're now actually in a very large room, way up high on a catwalk. Look down, and try to take out any guys you see. A trio of guys will come through a door near the bottom. Once everyone's dead and if you managed to survive, head back toward the door where you first entered this room, and climb down the stairs where the guy in the blue suit was located earlier. When you reach the bottom, turn right and head through the door. You'll now see a cutscene where a group of thugs are firing at Vladimir, but the cutscene ends before you get to see what happens. You have completed the demo! Congrats! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHEATS [FQWE] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, the cheats that work in the full version work in the demo as well. I have only used a few, so I can't guarntee that they all work in the demo version, but it's a safe bet that they do. Here's what you do: -Right Click on your May Payne 2 Demo shortcut on your desktop (make one if it doesn't already exist). -Select "Properties." -In the box labeled "Target," add "-developer" to the end of the line, without the quotes. Put a space between, and leave everything exactly the way it is. Example: "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 2 Demo\MaxPayne2Demo.exe" -developer Now, start up a game and while playing press the tilde key. It's the key in the upper-left corner of your keyboard, to the left of the 1, and above the tab key. It looks like a little squiggly line, or a ` to be percise. Doing so will bring up the console, and here is where you can type in your cheats. From here, type in the following commands to activate the desired effect: ______________________________________________________________________________ | C O D E EFFECT | |____________________________________________________________________________| getallweapons ............................................ Turn on HUD NOTE: I have only tested the following cheats: god, mortal, allweapons, and coder. I have not tested anything else. These cheats are supposedly for the full version, so some may not work in the demo. In any case, in the unlikely event that these cheats screw up your game, PC, or whatnot, I am not to be held responsible. However, since these cheats were obviously intentional by the developers and not from some unauthorized cheat device like GameShark, I seriously doubt anything will happen to you. Wait, we're not done yet. Believe it or not, you can play as any person in the game. Here's what you do: -Right Click on your May Payne 2 Demo shortcut on your desktop (make one if it doesn't already exist). -Select "Properties." -In the box labeled "Target," add "-developerkeys" to the end of the line, without the quotes. Put a space between, and leave everything exactly the way it is. -Please note that you can use this in conjuction with the "-developer" cheat as well. Just add them both at the end and put a space between. Once that's all done, go into a game and press the Page Up and Page Down to scroll through various skins. However, be warned that if you scroll until you reach a skin that's unavailable in the level you will receive an error message and the game will crash, so proceed with caution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLOSING AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS [MNBA] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would like to thank the following people, who's help, efforts, and input were invaluable in the creation of this guide: -www.GameFAQs.com, the greatest video game site on the web, -Jeff "CJayC" Veasey, admin and creator of GameFAQs, -Chris MacDonald (a.k.a.
