If there is some really annoying lava or water and you don't have a bucket, you can just place a dirt or some other resource block there to get rid of it. When you re-mine it, it will be gone.

I personally use either gravel or sand because when you place the block, if there is lava underneath the first lava, it sinks getting rid of the bottom lava. This then help you clear all the lava and not just the top layer :)

I agree, placing sand or gravel is more efficient.

This only works if you place the block on the source block, though.
