How many items do u have 2 put in the monsters chest so he can let me pass

I'm trying to paint the symbol on the wall to prove the mage is evil, but when i try, it says my character doesn't know what to paint. I have the paint and the page from the book.

I've tried many times to find the ruins west of Mildrew, but I only reach swamp or the cemetery with the pillar emerging from the abyss (where I'm always been zapped by a red lightning). How can I reach those damned ruins?

I am desperately trying to find the hanging man with the scroll half...All the walthroughs say SW of Mildrew but im walking around like a nut and not finding it...can anyone be more specific?
