Introduction !!!!!!!!!!!! Hi, I’m oracle93. This is my first walkthrough, but expect to see several in-depths by me later on. Anyway, I decided to write this walkthrough because The Dig is a great game by great minds from a really great company. I just finished it a little while ago, and I thought, why not? If you’re going to e-mail me, please do not spam me or I shall me forced to kill you. Also, I have to be able to read the e-mail, so no IM writing. Thanks. And no viruses, or I shall be forced to kill you, resurrect you, and kill you again. Before you e-mail a question, make sure you read that part of the guide thoroughly. If you send me a question that is in the guide, I will answer (unless it’s really dumb, like “what’s with the big asteroid?”), but I’d prefer you not give me questions that are answered. One more word: the general air of this game is a trapped and desparate feeling, and if you use this guide your entire way through the game, the mood is ruined, as well as all the fun. Do not look at the guide unless you are well and truly stuck. Enjoy the game! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Q: Can I put your guide on my website? A: Sure. Just e-mail me and ask permission first, or it’s plagiarism. Q: Where’s the (ITEM)? I can’t find it. A: I’ve put all the items in ALL CAPS for you, so look around the section where you are and you should find it. Q: I can’t get onto the crypt in the tomb! A: Make sure you’ve done everything needed to access the crypt. Light the tomb with the blue crystal, align the moons at the Planetarium Spire, look at the tomb with the Map Spire, and hold the CC tile in place with the rod. !!!!!!!!!!! Walkthrough !!!!!!!!!!! ------ Attila ------ The game begins with Low, Brink, and Robbins floating outside the shuttle. You have the PENULTIMATE, ARMING KEY and FLASHLIGHT in your inventory. Use the PENULTIMATE and talk to Miles about the Flying Pig (the tool chest in the payload bay below you). She will detatch it from the shuttle. Click on the Pig and Low will move it over to the asteroid, followed by Brink and Robbins. Go to quadrant 1 and open the pig. Take the SHOVEL, ZERO-G DIGGER, EXPLOSIVE UNIT ALPHA, and EXPLOSIVE UNIT BETA. Head back out to space and go to quadrant 2. Use the ZERO-G DIGGER with the target surface, then use EXPLOSIVE UNIT ALPHA with the dirt. Use the ARMING KEY with EXPLOSIVE UNIT ALPHA to arm it. Now head to quadrant 3. There’s a large boulder where you need to place the other unit. Use the SHOVEL with the boulder. Use EXPLOSIVE UNIT BETA with the surface, then arm it with the ARMING KEY. Go back to the shuttle and use the PENULTIMATE to talk to Borden about the explosives. He will tell you to get inside the shuttle. The nuclear explosives will be blown and Atilla will fall into a stable course-but this is only the beginning. After the explosion, Low, Brink and Robbins will enter a crater on Atilla. Push the metal plate into the wall. Use the ZERO-G DIGGER on the first odd projection, revealing another plate. Push this one too. Dig out the next one, and push another plate. Dig out the final odd projection, and push out a large plate. This one reveals a shaft big enough for you to go through, so do this. You will end up in a vast room in the center of the asteroid. Go to the pedestal on the other side of the room. Here you’ll find the four METAL PLATES you pushed earlier. Pick ‘em all up, then look at the alcove on the wall. The largest plate goes in the top. The small triangular one goes in the bottom. The left and right plates are oriented to fit in the remaining holes. Once you fit them all, the triangle becomes a square. Maybe you shouldn’t have done that-Atilla turns into crystal and rockets away from Earth. It lands on the planet Cocytus (never named in the game) and disappears. ---- Dais ---- The asteroid-turned-starship Atilla landed on a stone platform before disappearing. You’ll see a short scene. When it’s over, head to the clearing. You’ll see another scene before going to the map. There are three locations besides the dais. They are marked with question marks. Go to the one west of the dais, which turns out to be the wreck. ----- Wreck ----- Walk left and enter the wreck. Pull the hanging wire and you’ll see a ghost for the first time. Get the WIRE from the ground. Open the chest and get the DEVICE. Also get the ENGRAVED ROD the ghost dropped. Leave the area and head to the question mark north and a little to the east of the wreck. This is the grave. ----- Grave ----- Use the SHOVEL on the grave. Pick up the TUSK and the JAW BONE. Leave the area and head to the only remaining question mark, the dirt ramp. --------- Dirt Ramp --------- Use the DEVICE and it will point to the small mound on the ground. Use the SHOVEL on the mound to reveal the BRACELET, pick it up. Now return to the dais. ----------- Dais Return ----------- If you pulled the wire in the wreck, the ghost will appear here and point at a spot on the ground. Use the SHOVEL on that spot. Low will start digging, but Brink will ask for the shovel. He will start to dig, but the ground will collapse and he’ll fall and die. There is nothing you can do about this. Low and Robbins will enter the new area, the nexus. ----- Nexus ----- Robbins will leave you in here. Pick up the PLATE on the floor. Walk left and get the PURPLE ENGRAVED ROD from the ground. Now walk down the ramp in the center, near the dark tunnel. Don’t go into the dark tunnel, there’s nothing for you here yet. At the bottom of the ramp is a power room that provides electricity to the nexus. Low will look over the edge. Notice that two of the beams reflect into the triangular generator, but one is going off to the side. Look over it a second time, and use the cursor to locate the lens and empty lens slot. Look at the panel to find seven buttons. These buttons will program a maintainence robot. It will start above the triangle. The buttons are roughly arranged in the direction they will make the robot move. Blue, at the top, is up. Purple, at the left, is left, green, at the right, is right, yellow, at the bottom is down. The central button, red, will make the robot pause to collect. The top-left button deletes one light, and the bottom-left button clears the whole program. The triangular button, on the other panel, activates the robot. Got it? You now have to program the maintainence robot to pick up the lens and drop it in the slot. To make the robot pick the lens up, input 5 purple, 2 yellow and 1 red, then press the triangular button. Look at the panel again and clear the program. Enter 5 blue, 5 purple and 1 red. This will make the robot drop the lens in the slot, restoring electricity to the nexus. Open the panel and get the BLUE CRYSTAL, then head back up the stairs. Now that the nexus has power, you can open the doors. Look at the panel next to the second door to the left of Brink’s body. Examine the PURPLE ENGRAVED ROD to find a combination of four shapes. These shapes can be one of five: pyramid, cube, diamond, sphere, hexagon. Each of these shapes can be one of three colors: red, green, blue. On the panel are four red pyramids. If you click one, it becomes a red cube, and so on, until it starts again with green and again with blue. Click the shapes so the combination matches the one on the PURPLE ENGRAVED ROD. This will open the door. Head through it, and Low will contact Robbins, who is in the library. After that, push the blue button to call a tram. Get in and ride it to the museum spire. ------------ Museum Spire ------------ Try to open the weakened door, and Low will say he needs some help. Head outside, then up. Look at the strange device. Press and hold the pentagonal button to create a light bridge to the crystal form in the center. This won’t be useful yet as there are no other light bridges. Enter the museum. Get the TABLET from the wall and the GLOWING CRYSTALS (life crystals) from the floor. Look at all four displays. You will see some important things, namely the GLOWING CRYSTALS you just found resurrecting an alien and a powerfully explosive canister. Get the RED ENGRAVED ROD above the entrance to the library. Enter the library and talk to Robbins. Leave the library and use the tram to return to the nexus. ------------ Nexus Return ------------ The combination on the RED ENGRAVED ROD opens the second door to the right of Brink’s body. Call the tram in here...but the button doesn’t work. Strange. Low will mention that there may be a control room. We’ll deal with this later, so head back to the nexus. Use a GLOWING CRYSTAL on Brink to bring him back to life. After the cutscene, take the tram back to the museum spire. ------------------- Museum Spire Return ------------------- Click on the weakened door and Brink will help you open it. Behind the door is a basin filled with life crystals. A ghost will warn you about them, but Brink will take a bunch anyway. Low will also take four GLOWING CRYSTALS. Also get the CANISTER. Show it to Brink, who says it should react strongly to water. Go outside now and head to the water. A turtle-like creature will crawl out of the water, only to get eaten by a large eel, which will spit out the bones. Brink will run off now, but he’ll turn up again later. Go back an area and look at the fossil on the ground. The shape of this should give you an idea of where to place the bones of the dead creature. Go back to the water and look at the bones. They will be scattered around the creature’s shell. Click on a bone to pick it up, click again to place it, and right click while holding it to rotate it. You know you’re finished when the subtitle that appears when you move the cursor over it changes from “loose bones” to “dead creature”. Use the CANISTER with the dead creature. Use a GLOWING CRYSTAL on the dead creature to resurrect it. The eel will eat it again, dive underwater, and blow the CANISTER. This will kill the eel and make the water safe for swimming. Dive into the water and swim to the underwater cave. Enter the chamber. Get the PLATE and ORANGE ENGRAVED ROD. Now leave. Use the tram to return to the nexus. ---------------- Nexus 2nd Return ---------------- Use the combination on the ORANGE ENGRAVED ROD to open the first door to the left of the opening that leads outside. Use the blue button to call a tram to go to the planetarium spire. ----------------- Planetarium Spire ----------------- Exit the tram room and head up the cliff face. When you get to the gap, put on subtitles. When they signal a rumbling noise, click on the far side to ride the wave over there. On the far side, use the SHOVEL with the boulder to create a bridge so you don’t have to do that again. Head up. Adjust the lens on the strange device, then use it to create another light bridge. This allows you to travel back and forth between the planetarium and museum spires with going to the nexus. Cross the bridge and head to the crevice. Pick up the BLUE ROD and leave. Go to the plateau behind the water fall. A critter will steal part of the machine that keeps the door open. Use the SHOVEL on the cave. Get the ROD (it’s hard to find, in the dark area near the wheels) and RIB CAGE. Pick up the pole to move it a little. It’s too big to put in your inventory. Get the COVER and DOWEL near the door. Use the DOWEL with the hole in the large wheel, creating a pin. Pick up the pole and use it with the pin. Use the RIB CAGE with the hook, then use the ROD with the RIB CAGE. This will make your critter trap. Catching the critter is tricky. Look at both of the holes until he comes out. Now walk left so you are between the large wheels. When the critter comes near your location, walk right. He will run and knock the cage over, trapping himself. Use the BRACELET with the critter, then pick up the ROD to let him out. Enter the cave and use the DEVICE. Since it always points toward the bracelet, it will show you where the critter is. Use the SHOVEL with the tracker spot, then get the MACHINE PART. Back outside, use the MACHINE PART with the door panel, then use the COVER with the panel. Push the panel and the door will open. In the planetarium, get the PLATE, GREEN ENGRAVED ROD, and TWIN SCEPTERS (silver and gold). Use either of the scepters with the faint light to bring up the moon map. You need to align the moons in this order: sun, large moon, small moon, planet. The GOLD SCEPTER moves the large moon around the planet, while the SILVER SCEPTER moves the small moon around the large moon. If you align them correctly, light will shine on the tomb at the tomb spire, and you’ll see a scene where the critter takes the part again, closing the door. Use the button to open it again. Leave and use the tram to go to the nexus. ---------------- Nexus 3rd Return ---------------- Back in the nexus, enter the dark tunnel opposite the ramp. After a short cutscene, you will be in the airlock room. Push the first button once to open the airlock, then push the second button twice to open the other door. Enter the control room. In here, look at the control panel. Use the BLUE ROD with the hole to make two more rods slide up. Click on the dark crystal to light the tip (do not click on any of the other ones!). Move the first rod until the crystal’s tip is as light as it can get (note: this doesn’t necessarily mean slide the rod to the top). Without moving the first rod, repeat with the second and third. Once all the rods are in the right position, the crystal will light up, activating the tram to the tomb spire. Take it there now. ---------- Tomb Spire ---------- Head up the cliff. Use the SHOVEL on the stone plate and enter the tomb. Use the BLUE CRYSTAL with the hole to light the tomb. Unfortunately, there’s nothing else here yet. Head up and enter the cave to find Brink. Talk to him. Exit and use the strange device to create another lightbridge-you might have to adjust the lens. Now you can go quickly between the museum, tomb, and planetarium spires. Use the tram to go to the nexus. ---------------- Nexus 4th Return ---------------- Go to the door near the column and enter the code from the GREEN ENGRAVED ROD. The door still won’t open. Use the TUSK with the panel to pry it off. Use the WIRE with the sparks, then connect the other end to the panel. Replace the cover and the door will open. The tram station is in disrepair. Use the tram call and ride the tram to the map spire. --------- Map Spire --------- Exit the tram room and walk to the high door. Go through the door on the right, then continue through to the room covered in vines. Look at the panel. To see each spire, enter the code from its rod. Enter the code from the PURPLE ENGRAVED ROD to see a scene from the museum spire. Enter code from the RED ENGRAVED ROD to see the tomb at the tomb spire. Low will notice something here. Enter the ORANGE ENGRAVED ROD’s code to see the crevice at the planetarium spire. The code from the GREEN ENGRAVED ROD will show the cave you walked through to get here. When you’re done with the map, head through the opening to find this spire’s strange device. However, this one doesn’t work no matter where you put the lens. Pull off the panel on the side. You will see a screen where you need to light up red, green, and blue. Turn the source three times, the bottom prism three times, the top-right prism once and the top-left prism four times. This will reflect all the lasers into red, green, and blue. If they aren’t all lit, turn them until they are. This will fix the light bridge machine. Use it to create a light bridge-you can now travel between every spire but the last one. Head to the tomb spire. ----------------- Tomb Spire Return ----------------- Return to the tomb. Step on the panel with the “CC” marking, then use the ROD with it to hold it in place. Head back outside and dig out the dirt covering the shutter. The light from the moons will shine through and raise the crypt, with a large statue on it. Touch the statue and it will crumble. Step on the crypt to ride to the bottom level. Walk left, and a life crystal will fall from the slot, bringing the guard dog to life. Use a GLOWING CRYSTAL with the bones of the other guard dog and they will fight and kill each other. Use the ENGRAVED ROD with the slot to open the door. Cross to the pyramid and use the ENGRAVED ROD on the panel. Use a GLOWING CRYSTAL with the alien corpse. Unfortunately, you can’t understand him. Exit the conversation and the alien will die again. In a cutscene, Robbins will be captured by a giant spider-like creature. Exit the tomb and head up to Brink’s area. Talk to him, but he doesn’t want to help Maggie. Go to the cave entrance and use the FLASHLIGHT on the bat creatures. They will chase Brink away. Enter the cave and take Brink’s stash of GLOWING CRYSTALS. Low will force Brink to help him. Go to the map spire, which is where Robbins is. ---------------- Map Spire Return ---------------- To find the nest, first go to the room near the ledge, with the door which leads to the cave which leads to the map room. The nest is opposite this door. Robbins is in here. Talk to Brink about the monster and he will distract it. Low will head through the door on the other side. Go up to the falls source, and step on the rock above the waterfall. This will divert the water into the grate. Push over the rock, which will weigh down the diverting stone. Return to the nest and talk to Brink about the grate. In a cutscene, he will lure the monster over to the grate, and Robbins will open it. The monster will be hit by the water and fall off the cliff. Brink will punch Low and take all his life crystals. Leave the nest and go to the ledge. Enter the door beyond the one that leads to the tram. Show Robbins the TABLET, and she will use the field of almost-light to make an island appear on the water. Head through the opening on the island, and watch the scene. Get the PLATE and watch another scene, in which Low says they should bring Brink before they put the PLATES in the alcove in the nexus. Return to the ledge and enter the upper door. Brink will contact you to say he is in trouble, so head to the planetarium spire. ------------------------ Planetarium Spire Return ------------------------ Go to the crevice, where Brink has his hand stuck in the rock. After a cutscene, use the JAW BONE on him. After Brink’s hand is sawed off, all three return to the nexus. ---------------- Nexus 5th Return ---------------- You will automatically be on the alcove screen, so fit the PLATES together like you did on Atilla. The final door will open. Brink will return to his work at the tomb spire, so head to the tram station and use the tram call to get a tram to the cathedral spire. --------------- Cathedral Spire --------------- Enter the door. Examine the console and look at the gap in the machinery. Also note that there are two slots that would fit life crystals. Walk up the spiraling path to the top, looking at the console and alien device on the way. At the top, walk left to the strange device. Knock off the nest and use the device to create a light bridge, adjusting the lens as needed. All five light bridges are operational now, so you can travel between the spires without going to the nexus. Talk to Robbins about the alien device. She suggests that you go talk to the inventor, the alien buried in the tomb. Go to the museum spire first. ----------------------- Museum Spire 2nd Return ----------------------- Go through the weakened door in the tram room and get some GLOWING CRYSTALS from the basin. Go to the tomb spire. --------------------- Tomb Spire 2nd Return --------------------- In the tomb, ride the crypt to the bottom and head through the door. Use the ENGRAVED ROD on the pyramid and your GLOWING CRYSTAL on the alien corpse. Maggie will step forward to translate here. Ask him about everything. You have to ask about the alien device four times and the eye part twice. He drops the CREATOR’S ENGRAVING on the ground. Exit the conversation and he will die again. Pick up the CREATOR’S ENGRAVING and leave the tomb. Go to the map spire. -------------------- Map Spire 2nd Return -------------------- Enter the map room and look at the map panel. The CREATOR’S ENGRAVING is the same as the other engraved rods. Enter its combination to see a beach. Leave the map room and go to the nest. Head through the opposite door, then cross the bridge and go through the door to the beach. The EYE PART is in the rock near the screen. Click on it, then take it out of the rock. Leave and go back through to the light bridge. Go to the cathedral spire. ---------------------- Cathedral Spire Return ---------------------- Walk toward the console with the missing part. Brink will show up and take your life crystals. Chase after him to the tomb spire. --------------------- Tomb Spire 3rd Return --------------------- Enter Brink’s cave and show him the EYE PART. Use the EYE PART in the relic slot. The machine will produce two GLOWING CRYSTALS, which Low will take. Get the EYE PART from the slot. Brink will attempt to kill you with a brick for destroying the crystal machine, but it’s too heavy and he falls over the cliff. Return to the cathedral spire. It’s time for the finale! ----------------------------------- Cathedral Spire 2nd Return (Finale) ----------------------------------- Enter the lab and click on the console with the missing part. Use the EYE PART with the gap, and two GLOWING CRYSTALS in the slot. Talk to Robbins about the alien device. She says that she might die working it, and makes you promise not to use a life crystal on her. She sets all the consoles, but the device itself is stuck. She prys it open but falls and is killed. The Eye is open, though. Here’s where the ending splits. Maggie made you promise, but if you use a GLOWING CRYSTAL on her, the ending is a bit different. Either way, exit through the top. Try to cross the light bridge, but you get stopped by the guard dog. Look at the strange device and use the button to turn off the bridge, dropping the dog into the ocean below. Create the bridge again, then cross to the Eye. Head inside and enter the portal to Spacetime Six. CONGRATULATIONS ON BEATING THE DIG! ------- Credits ------- SUPERCAT: Me.
