The Sims in Sims 2 ================================================================================ Welcome to the wonderful world of The Sims 2. In this FAQ/Guide the plan is to give you all the information you need to play the Sims 2 happily for hours on end, as I'm sure you did with The Sims for the last couple of years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.1 Understanding Your Sims -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sims 2 has seen the introduction of a few new features that influence the way that your Sim will behave, however it is important to not get to carried away with your Sims Wants and Aspiration, and keep an eye on your Sims primary needs. These needs are what your Sims will strive to fulfil before any other. The next section will cover these primary need. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.2 Your Sims' Needs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your Sim has 8 primary needs that will constantly need to be monitored and kept in the green. If too many, or indeed any, of these need get down to zero, your Sim can die. It is important to note that all these needs work differently and often some need will effect your Sim more than others. This will depend on what need it is and will also be impacted by the personality of your Sim. The 8 needs of you Sim are, Hunger, Energy, Fun, Social, Hygiene, Comfort, Bladder and Environment. Below each need is looked into further. Hunger - Personally, this is the most important of the 8 needs, although you don't need to keep this full, if it gets to zero your sim will die. It is important to note that if you are sick, or pregnant, then your hunger bar will decease faster. Energy - Your Sims energy will go down as you Sim does activity. There are three ways to increase you Sims energy levels, sleep, nap and drink coffee. If your Sim runs out of energy, when the bar goes red, your sim will collapse on the floor and sleep there. If this happens you will need to wake you Sim and put them to bed. Fun - This is another important Sim need as if this need is not looked after then your Sim will refuse to learn new Sim Skills and will be more grumpy. There are a lot of ways to increase your Sims fun levels, the best of these is the play Computer games. You can also chat online read a book, watch TV, and dance. Some activities that increase fun also help towards you Sim Skills, like painting, playing chess and stargazing. Each Sim will have different things that they prefer to do to keep fun up in there lives, and this can effect how fast your fun goes up. Social - This is one of the need that is impacted by your Sims personality. If your Sim is Outgoing then they will need more interaction with other Sims. A good way to keep the social bar up is to eat meals with other Sims. When socialising, the higher level activities will increase your Sims social bar faster, things like hugging, kiss and entertaining work better than just talking. Also, some things can increase both social and fun, like watch TV together, playing games together and dancing. Hygiene - Hygiene will decrease throughout the day, however some events can cause this to decrease faster, such as working out or peeing your pants. Take a shower or have a bath to increase this, you can also wash you hands to help this. When you Sim is sick, hygiene will also drop faster. Comfort - This is your Sims comfort level, and something that you should be aware but can be easily handled. Your Sims comfort will increase whenever you sleep or sit down. Some items are able to increase your Sims comfort better than others, so it pays to get a better bed and chairs. Bladder - This is pretty easy, you just need to tell your Sim to go to the toilet. If the bar gets down to red, your Sim will have an accident and pee their pants. Drink coffee and being pregnant will cause your Sims bladder bar to go down faster. Environment - This is how your Sim feels about the room they are in. The best way to keep this up is to have the room well lit, so put in plenty of lights. The environment rating will go down if there are dirty plates, or other mess and the room rating will also be decreased by cheap furniture. You can also increase the environment by putting up pictures and other decorations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.3 Your Sims' Personality -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your Sims personality will effect the way you Sim lives and how they are effected by the events going on around them and the interaction they make with other Sims and items. There are five parts to your Sims personality. Sloppy/Neat, Shy/Outgoing, Lazy/ Active, Serious/Playful and Grouchy/Nice. Each of these parts is made of a scale from 1 to 10, and depending on its Value will depend on weather it is Sloppy or Neat. Here is a little about each of the Personality Traits. Sloppy/Neat Sloppy Sims are just that, sloppy, they will not clean up after themself, or make there beds. A neat Sim will always wash the dishes after eating, and make the bed after getting up. If your Sim only has a few neat points, around 4 - 6 they will some times clean up, to take out the trash, and maybe even flush the toilet. Shy/Outgoing A shy Sim although still needing some social interaction won't really want to join in on activities, and their social bar will not drop very fast. An outgoing Sim needs to have people around and will want to have parties. Great for Popularity Aspiration Sims, you will have to watch the social bar closely or your Sim will not want to learn any Sim Skills. Lazy/Active A lazy Sim want to lounge around and watch TV or relax and read a book to have fun. Whereas a active Sim will get more out of dancing, working out and other activities like swimming. Take note of this as it will help working out what is best to increase your Sims fun levels. Serious/Playful Serious Sims don't like to 'play' with other Sims. They don't like to tickle or be tickled etc. A playful Sim will get more social rating out of the play options (Tickle, Red Hands) than a Serious Sim. Grouchy/Nice This is an easy one, a grouchy Sim will be hard to get along with other Sims, and a nice Sim will get along with anyone. Grouchy Sims will find it hard to make and keep friends, and nice Sims will make friends easy. Other non-player controlled Sims will react to how grouchy/nice your Sim is. Your Sims personality and the Value of the 5 personality traits will effect what Zodiac Sign your Sim is given. When making your sim you can also select the default personality of each of the Zodiac sign. Your Sims Zodiac sign will affect the way your Sim interacts with other Sims. See the Zodiac Sim Compatibilities table in section 5.6 1.3.1 Default Personalities --------------------------- These are the default Personality Stats that can be selected when creating your Sim. To select one of these personalities simply select the Zodiac sign associated with it. With the follow chart, the higher the number the more toward the second option the personality is. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zodiac Sign |Sloppy/Neat|Shy/Outgoing|Lazy/Active|Serious/Playful|Grouchy/Nice ================================================================================ Aries | 5 | 8 | 6 | 3 | 3 Taurus | 5 | 5 | 3 | 8 | 4 Gemini | 4 | 7 | 8 | 3 | 3 Cancer | 6 | 3 | 6 | 4 | 6 Leo | 4 | 10 | 4 | 4 | 3 Virgo | 9 | 2 | 6 | 3 | 5 Libra | 2 | 8 | 2 | 6 | 7 Scorpio | 6 | 5 | 8 | 3 | 3 Sagittarius | 2 | 3 | 9 | 7 | 4 Capricorn | 7 | 4 | 1 | 8 | 5 Aquarius | 4 | 4 | 4 | 7 | 6 Pisces | 4 | 3 | 7 | 3 | 7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.3.2 Changing Child Sim Personalities -------------------------------------- You can change your Sims personalities with the Encourage option. This can only be done by a Sim in a more advance stage of their life cycle. This means that an adult can encourage a teen or child, and only an elder can encourage all Sims. Tip - The bigger the difference in the age the more and faster the encourage option works. So the best encourage would come from an Elder on a Child. The good thing about the encourage option is that when a Sim is encouraged in one section of their personality, say neatness, and they gain a point in neatness, no points are taken off any of your other personality section. The way that the encourage options works is that the older Sim that is trying to encourage the younger Sim must have that least 7 points in that personality trait to raise the younger Sims rating. If you are trying to lower the rating of a personality trait the older Sim must have 3 personality points or less in the trait you are trying to change. The important thing to remember in trying to use the encourage option is that both parties must be in a good mood. The change in your Sim will also happen faster depending a couple of things. The first is the relationship, the better the relationship between the two Sim the faster the encourage works. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.4 Sim Aspirations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the Sims 2 your Sim will have its Aspirations. These are your Sims life goals. There are five aspirations, Family, Romance, Fortune, Knowledge and Popularity. Note - For information about Wants, see section 8. The Family Sim The family Sim is all about family. To this Sim, family is the most important thing and will have wants related family. The Romance Sim The romance Sim needs to be loved, and to love, and the more Sims the better. This Sim will want to carry on multiple relationships. Tip: Check out the Friends and Lovers sections (5.3 & 5.4) The Fortune Sim The fortune wants money, and lots of it. It does not care where it comes from. A very hard working this Sim and will want to spend its money on material goods. The Knowledge Sim The knowledge Sim want to know everything, and will send to bulk of its life in books trying to learn. The best thing a knowledge Sim can to is max out all it's Sim Skills. The Popularity Sim The popularity Sim is a social being, and must have friends, and not just one or two, but as many as it can get its hands on. Parties are a must, and they must be great, nothing less. Tip: Check out the Party section (5.1.1) 1.4.1 Aspiration Points ----------------------- Each time your Sim achieves one of there aspiration wants there are given aspiration points. These points can then be used to 'purchase' aspiration rewards. See section 9.1 for a list of the Aspiration rewards. The amount of aspiration points earned for a want are relative to the value of the want towards the Sims aspiration. However some wants will always be the same for all Sims regardless of the Sims Aspiration. An example of this is 'Get SimChildName into Private School'. You can also loose your Aspiration Points by fulfilling your Sims fears. Fears can take a number forms and be aspiration related and non aspiration related. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.5 Sim Skills -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your Sims have the ability to learn different Skills as they grow older. There are seven SimSkills to learn. Cooking, Mechanical, Charisma, Body, Logic, Creativity and Cleaning. Each SimSkill has a total of Ten points that can be earned for it. Once a Sim get to level ten, they can not learn any more, however they can still do the activities that gain the skill points. It is important to note that the higher the skill point you are trying to earn, the longer it takes. Therefore it can take the same time for one Sim to reach level 3 from Zero, as it will for one Sim to reach level 10 from level 9. The SimSkills are used to claim the Career paths and reach the top job. For more information about work and what skills are required for which jobs, check section 4. In most cases there are a number of different ways that you can gain a skill level. These ways are covered below. Cooking - Cooking is one of the most basic SimSkill and although only needed for two career paths, every Sim should have at least 3 SimSkill points here. This is so they don't burn down the house when trying cook. The other reason for this is that the higher the SimSkill points for cooking, the more food you can cook, and the more it satisfies the hunger bar. To get your Sim to learn to cook, you can get them to cook some food, as this will progress there learning. As you only cook a few times a day, the other way to learn is to study a book. Select your bookshelf and select study, cooking. Mechanical - This SimSkill is used for five different career paths, and can just be obtained for those career, however having a couple of skill points here is a good things as you need Mechanical skills to repair things around the house. This can also be done by calling a repairman though. Note - Don't Repair Electrical Items unless you have a High Mechanical Skill Rating. To learn mechanical skills, the best way is to study. Use the bookcase to study, mechanical. You can also gain mechanical points by repairing this around the house. Charisma - This skill is used for 5 career paths and is handy to have at least a couple of points of for any Sim. You will find that Romance and Popularity Sims want to increase their Charisma even when it is not used for there job, so it is best to get them a job that does require Charisma. The higher your Sims charisma, the faster your Sims will be able to make friends. To learn Charisma you will need to buy a mirror for your Sim to practice at. Select the mirror and select Practice Speech/Romance. Body - Body is only required by 4 career paths, so it is not important to concentrate on unless needed. You will find that Active Sim will want to work out more than Lazy Sims. Although not really needed apart from for careers, it is good to have a few body points as Sims with body points are able to resist illnesses and are able to win fights more easily. *See Section 16 Acknowledgments There are a number of ways to gain Body skill points. The best way is to buy the Gym and use that. You can also gain body points from using the TV or Stereo to Work Out, or you can have your Sim do Yoga. Sims will also gain body skill points from swimming, which is also a great way to boost your Sims fun. Logic - Logic is the most needed skill for the career paths, and is a must to start work on quickly. Other than the career paths there does not seem to be any other use for it though. If you have a Knowledge Sim you will find your Sim will want to do activities that increase Logic. To gain Logic skill points you will need to buy a chess set or telescope. The chess set is good as it can be use by two Sims at once and both will receive logic points, plus it is a boost to fun and social. You will find your Knowledge Sim will want to stargaze with the telescope. Creativity - This is the only skill that you can make money off outside of the career paths. This is a great skill for your stay at home Sim to learn. A Sim with high creativity can paint and write novels that can be sold. Creativity is also used for 5 careers so it is good for every Sim to have at least a couple of points. The best way to gain creativity points is to paint. The good thing about this is that it also increase your fun and you can sell the picture once finished. Cleaning - This is the only new Sim Skill in the Sims 2 and is for only three career paths. Again this Skill does not seem to have any use out side of the career paths. There are two ways that you can learn cleaning skill points. One is to clean things around the house, like the shower and benches. You can also study cleaning by selecting the bookcase and then study, cleaning. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.6 Sim Neighbourhoods -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are three established Neighbourhoods in the Sims 2, Pleasantview, Strange- ville and Veronaville. All of these Neighbourhoods have everything that you need to play the game for hours on end. Each neighbourhood is made up of a number of different things, first there is the neighbourhood terrain that includes all the underlying features, the roads, tree, etc. Then you have all the lots and houses that there to start with. The last part of the neighbourhood are the community lots, with all the shops and parks that your Sims can enjoy. Note - All the houses and lot in the neighbourhood can be moved, or deleted in the houses and lots section of the neighbourhood screen. From here you also change any of the pre-built house, as long as no-one lives in them and you can also built new houses or install packaged lots either from the game or the web. Any change made in the houses and lots view does effect the price of the house. See section 3.1 for more information. Each lot in the neighbourhood view has all the information about that lot, the cost of the lot, and who lives there, how much the family is worth, the family bio and a bit about each family member. Community Lots also have this information, but this only describes what can be done at each of the community lots. Note - Each of the three pre-built neighbourhoods have there own stories, all the families in the neighbourhood can be play like a scenario. Each family have events due to happen, it is up to you if you make these happen or not. It takes a while to figure out them all out, but it is worth it. Below is a list of all the families in each neighbourhood. The second section of the list shows the families in the waiting bin for that neighbourhood. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pleasantview | Strangeville | Veronaville ================================================================================ Broke | Beaker | Capp Caliente | Curious | Monty Dreamer | Grunt | Summerdream Goth | Smith | Lothario | Spector | Pleasant | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Burb | Loner | Capp Oldie | Singles | Capp | | Monty | | Monty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================================ 2 Creating a Sim/Family: ================================================================================ The Sims 2 see the introduction of a much more advanced Sim editor for the creation of your Sims. This means not only you can customise your Sims to look more like yourself and your friends, it means the Townie Sims are also very different. The new Sim editor allows you to personalise everything, not just the hair color and clothes of your Sim. You can change the eye color, facial aspects (eg nose) and make-up. Tip - Don't get to hung up on the make-up and hair color, as this can be changed anytime throughout the game by using a mirror. When creating your Sim, the first thing you will need to do is create the Family name for the Sim, this should be fairly simple, although, if you are like me, this will take about 20 minutes. After the Family name is done, you will have to give your sim a name, again very easy to do, and the is half an hour of game play take up, for me anyway. The rest of the set up is very straight forward, select the gender and age of your Sim to be. Select the skin color and the Weight. After that you have the Sim biography. Now, you can skip this, as I have leant to do after finding that I have been on the game for over an hour and are still trying to make my first Sim. Tip - If you are the kind of player who like to take chances, you can get the game to make a Sim for you. Press the dice icon, which is found at the top of the screen, and then you have a new, randomised Sim. Good Luck. After you have finished with the basic of making your Sim, you can now add your own personal touches. The first option you will have now is the option to change the shape of your Sims head. The options here will depend on the basic selections you have made for your Sim, the age, skin color and gender of your Sim. Select the head shape that you want you Sim to have. Next is the hair color and style, as noted earlier this can be changed at any time in the game, so you can skip over this section. You will now have the option to change the smaller details of the face. Starting with your base selection here you can change this using the sliders on the bottom of the panel to give your Sim the look you want. After you have worked on the face, you now have the option to change the Brow. This is done the same as the face by selecting a base option and then using the sliders to give your Sim that extra touch up. You can now change the color of your eyes, which can be changed though out the game. You still have the sliders at the bottom to work on the eyes a little more. The same can now be done for the nose, month and chin. Have a good play with the sliders as these can add a lot to the final look of your Sim. You should now your Sim looking just the way you want, you can set up your make- up options. This section allows your Sims blush, Eyeliner, Eye Shadow, and Lipstick. You can skip right this section, as this can be set and changed at any stage in the game. The next section is for your Sims other looks, Costume Makeup, Glasses, Eyebrow style, stubble and Beard or Moustache. Again this section can be skipped. The last section in your Sims creation is setting what clothes you want you Sims to wear. You have the option to set your Sims clothing for Everyday clothes, Formal, Undies, PJs, Swimwear and Athletics. This are the clothes that your Sim will start with. Check 6.1 for more information about clothes. That almost completes the creation of your Sim, as there is still one last section to go. And that is setting the aspiration and personality of your Sim. At this section you have the option of the Five Aspirations, Family, Romance, Fortune, Knowledge and Popularity. For more information about aspirations see section 1.4. After you have selected your Sims aspiration, you can set there personality. A Sims personality is made up of five parts, Neatness, Shyness, Laziness, Playful- ness and now nice your Sim is. For more information about your Sims personality see section 1.3. What options you select here will have an impact on your Sims Zodiac sign. You can also select a Zodiac sign and use the default personality for each sign. You can see the table under section 1.3.1 for the default personalities for each Zodiac sign. Once this is done, your Sim has been created. You can now continue with the game or make up some more Sims for the family. ================================================================================ 3 Your Sims House: ================================================================================ This is the location that you will spend most in, although you can visit the Community lots, most of the game play is in and about the house. Choosing your house is very important as you need to make sure it is big enough for your family and there need, there is no point buy a house, just to find it will not fit a double in any room (as I did). This just waste time and money. Use the house and lots option to check out the house before you buy it. Remember, it is not enough for your house to have just enough room to sleep and eat meals, you also need room for the computer, TV, stereo, seats etc. You have to make sure that you have enough room. I can cannot stress this point enough. You Sims need space for all the extra items that they need to learn there Sim skills. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 Houses and Lots -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Section still to come. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.2 Building a House -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Section still to come. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.3 Expanding a House -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Section still to come. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.4 Furnishing a House -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you have built or brought your house, before your Sims can live in it, you must make it livable, by Furnishing your house. How much you furnish your house will depend greatly on how much money you have. For just the single Sim, or couple, you can do this with as little as §5,000. What career would your Sim love the most? And what career they will excel in fastest is covered under Aspirations and Careers below, but first lets have a look at the careers and if your Sim should work or not! Some people believe that there should always be a 'Stay at Home Sim', this idea will be covered more under section 6 - The Day to Day Sim. Although this is a valid idea, there is nothing stopping you from working all your Sims to their deaths. Although I have found that it is easier to get to the top faster if you don't have to worry about the small things like cooking, cleaning and friends. Allowing more time to concentrate on your Sim skills. This leads to the most important of things in relation to your Sims and their work lives, and that is your Sim's Skills. Sim Skills are cover in detail under section 1.5 - Sim Skill, but here is a basic understanding for how they work with the career paths you choose. There are 7 Sim Skills, and an eighth 'skill' Friends that need to be looked for each career path. Which skill you concentrate on and how many friends you have will relate directly to which career path you choose. See section 4.4.2 - Final Stats Chart Comparison, for information on what Sim Skills are required for each career path. All careers paths require thee Sim Skills plus friends to make it to the top, however the amount of Sim skill and which ones is different for each career path. If you choose a career that needs a lot of friends, like the Slacker career, then you may want to have a 'Stay at Home Sim'. There are ten career paths, and each has it's good points and bad. For now, I'll leave you to figure those out. Here is a look at the 10 careers. Careers: Athletic, Business, Criminal, Culinary, Law Enforcement, Medical, Military, Politics, Science, Slacker. Now it is time to look at your Sims Aspirations, and which career would you Sim be best in. IMPORTANT NOTE - To Find a job use the Newspaper or the Computer. There are 3 job advertised per day in the Newspaper and 5 a day on the Computer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.1 Aspirations and Careers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a list of the five Aspirations, and which careers suit best.
