[DS0] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Death's Scythe, or just Death's Scythe, henceforth known as simply "DS" is the traditional weapon of the mythical character the Grim Reaper, also known as Death. According to myth, Death uses its scythe to reap the souls of the dead and bring them to the Underworld. The Grim Reaper's role is not unlike that of the Three Fates in Grecian mythology. In "Castlevania: Curse of Darkness," Hector, the main character, can use DS simply to kick the living podunks out of his enemies. The weapon is the most powerful in the game with an ATK (attack bonus) of 120. To give an idea for those who don't know, the wimpiest weapons in the game include the Deck Brush, Champion Glove, Short Sword, Bamboo Sword and Bamboo Lance. None of them have an ATK rating above 10, so it's easy to see why attempting to obtain a weapon with an ATK rating 12 times higher is so desirable. Unfortunately, you cannot obtain the scythe until after defeating the Grim Reaper (Death), but you can go back and fight more normal enemies before taking on Dracula if you want. ============================================================================= FAQs [DS1] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Is it easy to create the DS? A: Yes and no. Most of the materials required to make it are fairly easy to acquire, it just takes a LONG time and a LOT of stealing and searching to find everything. Q: Is it worth creating? A: Hell yeah! This weapon is da SCHIZZ-NO, BABAY!!! Plus it makes fighting Dracula (the final boss) that much easier, since it has the highest ATK of any other weapon. Q: Does it look cool? A: Yes! It's very hip and stylish, and all glowing purple and whatnot. Hector looks like the MAN with it hanging on his back. Q: Can I have a cookie? A: Shut up. Q: Make me. A: Look. Either ask a question about the Death's Scythe, or I will kill you in your sleep. ============================================================================= Explanation of Requirements & Total Materials Needed [DS2] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In order to create the DS, you will need 4 main parts. Three weapons and 1 extremely rare material, of which there is only 1 and 1 way to get it in the entire game. The three weapons needed are the: 7 Bladed Sword, Battle Axe and Chauve-souris. The rare material needed is called "Death's Pulse," which you can ONLY get by stealing from none other than Death himself (or itself, considering Death probably doesn't have a gender). It also takes several different materials to create each of the 3 weapons themselves. The creation of each is explained below. Another requirement, and just plain nice thing in general to have is an ability called "Invincible Vase," which is a power only available to the Innocent Devil Tiramisu, one of the final forms of the Infant Fairy. You will need this when acquiring the final part of DS, Death's Pulse, which you can only steal at a specific time, i.e. when he is doing a certain move. This is explained in detail below. See Stealing Death's Pulse & Basic Death-Fighting Tips. Below is a list of the total amount of materials you will need to make the DS. This list has replaced the lists for the individual master weapons from the FAQ's first version. The first step is to check out the list below and work on obtaining at least 2/3 of the materials before starting to build the 3 master weapons. You can print the list out, as I have included check boxes to allow you to check off once you have obtained enough of the material. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- [X] -- MATERIAL NAME -- ## -- COMMONNESS -- HOW TO OBTAIN ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- [_] -- Ancient Memory -- 3 -- COMMON -- dropped by several enemies [_] -- Aquamarine -- 2 -- UNCOMMON -- steal from Fishmen [_] -- Beelzebub's Seal -- 1 -- RARE -- rarely dropped by Unicorns [_] -- Bronze -- 22 -- COMMON -- dropped by Skeletons [_] -- Carbon Steel -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- dropped by/stolen from Sniper Orcs and Great Armors [_] -- Ceramics -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- dropped by Rapid Snipers and Skeleton Troopers [_] -- Ceremonial Tool -- 4 -- COMMON -- steal from Blaze Masters and Vassagos [_] -- Damascus Steel -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- steal from Iron Gladiators or find in a treasure chest [_] -- Dark Crystal -- 2 -- UNCOMMON -- steal from Evil Cores [_] -- Death's Pulse -- 1 -- SUPER RARE -- steal from Death (see Stealing Death's Pulse & Basic Death-Fighting Tips for help) [_] -- Devil's Vein -- 1 -- SUPER RARE -- steal from Isaac (first fight) [_] -- Dragon Scale -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- steal from Skeleton Riders [_] -- Ether -- 4 -- RARE -- steal from Lizard Shamen, find a couple in different areas [_] -- Forgotten Memory -- 1 -- RARE -- dropped by Anduscias and Unicorns [_] -- Holy Man's Vein -- 1 -- RARE -- steal from Dead Fencers [_] -- Knight's Vein -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- dropped by Phantom Swords, Spectral Swords and Dead Fencers [_] -- Phlogiston -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- steal from Flame Demons [_] -- Spirit of Fuji -- 4 -- UNCOMMON -- steal from Lesser Demons [_] -- Steel -- 3 -- COMMON -- dropped by Bone Soldiers, Dark Warlocks and Great Armors [_] -- White Steel -- 1 -- UNCOMMON -- dropped by Ghouls and White Gravials [_] -- Wild Memory -- 5 -- COMMON -- dropped by Skeleton Blazes, Fenrirs and Zombies ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMMON ====== This material is really easy to come by, i.e. it is dropped often by enemies or it is very easy to steal. You will find tons of them. UNCOMMON ==== This material is a little harder to find or steal but not too much so. You will get a decent amount of these. RARE ======== This material is very hard to find, and is hardly ever dropped by enemies, or can only be stolen from hard-to-find enemies and at very certain times. SUPER RARE == This material is EXTREMELY hard to find, and only 1 or 2 of them exist in the entire game. The only ones that fit into this category are Death's Pulse (with 1 in the game) and Devil's Vein (with 2). So without further adeu, let's start tackling the first of the 3 master weapons, the Battle Axe. ============================================================================= Creating the Battle Axe (#26) [DS3] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, start by making 3 Short Swords. To do this you simply will need 2 Bronze per Short Sword, so you will need 6 total. Those are really easy to find as normal skeletons will drop them, and you should already have quite a few. Next, turn 2 of them into Ganos, by adding a Wild Memory to both of them. You will now have 1 Short Sword and 2 Ganos. Next add a Knight's Vein to the Short Sword to create a Zweihander (#12). Follow up adding a White Steel to that and you will have yourself a Claymore (#14; it's not a bad sword actually). Next, you will combine an Ancient Memory with a Wild Memory and make a Bamboo Sword (#11; and don't use this in combat...EVER), and mix a Steel and a Spirit of Fuji to that and get a Nodachi (#13). This sword is pretty good too, faster but not quite as powerful as the Claymore. But if you want to see a really cool looking and decently powerful sword, combine that Nodachi and Claymore together with a Ceramics and say hello to the Dragon Killer (#15). No, seriously, do it, even if you don't care about it, because you will need it for the Battle Axe anyway. You will now have a Dragon Killer and 2 Ganos. So, let's go back to those axes. Add a Steel to 1 Gano and create a Mace (#33) and follow up on that with a Carbon steel and a Holy Man's Vein. You now have a Morgenstern (#35), which is a holy-ish mace, like what a Cleric would use, for all you Dungeons & Dragons players. Set that aside and mix the other Gano with an Ancient Memory to give yourself a Bullova (#23). Guess what you do now? Combine that with the Morgenstern you just made and you have a Bardiche (#24). The last combination is that Bardiche, mixed with that Dragon Killer you made earlier, and a Forgotten Memory (a rare material you can only get from certain enemies; explained below). Guess what that makes? That's right! A Battle Axe at last!!! Ya hoo, you are officially a quarter of the way there, so give yourself a big hug and try out that sexy +70 ATK on some enemies!! Smash! Kachunk! Bang! (ok, so i suck at onomatopoeias, sue me :P) ============================================================================= Creating the 7 Bladed Sword (#9) [DS4] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Battle Axe (incredibly powerful [highest ATK of the 3 DS weapons]) may be fine and dandy, and your best friend against big and/or slow enemies, but on the downside it is incredibly slow also. That's understandable considering the size. But why don't we make a much quicker, and a little bit less powerful weapon that still looks uber sweet. We will be making the 7 Bladed Sword, which doesn't actually have 7 blades, but it does have 6 "spiney, hookey" blades coming off the main blade (oddly enough, it resembles Corpsey's hooky sword, if you know what that looks like). It also emits purply-blackish dark misty crap from it which looks pretty sick. Ok, let's do it! -------------------- Start again with the Short Swords. This time we will be needing 8 altogether, and 1 will be turned into a Gano, so once again, Wild Memory + Short Sword = Gano. So you'll have 1 Gano and 7 SS. Add that Gano and 1 SS with a Ceremonial Tool and a Wild Memory to make the Ada sword (#3). Next you will need an Ether and a Dragon Scale, both of which are fairly rare (how to get them below). When you have 1 of each, they will go together with an Ancient Memory and the Ada you just made, and you will have the Kris Naga sword (#6). After that, you will need a Damascus Steel, which you can ONLY steal from 1 kind of enemy I believe, other than that, I found 1 in a chest that you will need to use the Devil-type ID's ability "Magic Circle" in order to get to. Again, I'll explain that below, so don't fear. Anyway, after you find 1, that will be added to the Kris Naga and create the Damascus Sword (#7). At this point, you will have that Damascus Sword and 6 Short Swords which you will use in just a second. First, you will need a Dark Crystal and a very hard to get material called Beelzebub's Seal. Then you mix those with the Damascus Sword and the 6 Short Swords and you will have the 7 Bladed Sword. It's not too bad, with +50 ATK, and its much faster than the Battle Axe. ============================================================================= Creating the Chauve-souris (#49) [DS5] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If swords and axes aren't your bag, maybe you like staves instead. Yes? Alright then, let's make the super-duperest ultimate staff of all time. I saved this for last because it takes a lot more uncommon and rare materials to make and it'll probably end up being the last one you make, like me. This special spear is also Isaac's favorite weapon, and he uses it the first time you fight him. It has the same ATk as the 7 Bladed Sword (+50), but doesn't have as many combos (7BS has 7 combos, CS has 4 or 5). Although, if you want to upgrade your Devil-type ID to the third and final form, "The End," you will need to kill 100 enemies with the Chauve-souris with your Devil ID out. A great place to do this is in the Mortvaria Aquaduct, just south of the passage to Baljhet Mountains. Look on the Aquaduct map and you will see 4 circle rooms connected by 4 straight passageways, right below the entrance to the Mountains. This is a good place to do it. Enter into it and go around in circles either CW or CCW, it doesn't really matter. The 3 good things of this is because 1.] the enemies (mostly Fishmen and/or Lizardmen, but also a couple armored knights) keep respawning each time you come back to the room, 2.] there are several of them per room and, 3.] most importantly, they should all be really easy to kill if you are at a substantial level. All you do is go around in circles and kill 8-10 of them in each room and before long, you will have a beefed up Devil-type. Also, this is a good way to get the ability "Invincible Vase" from your Tiramisu fairy, which like I stated above, you will need in order to steal the Death's Pulse below. But first, you have to make the staff, so anyway here is how to do it. -------------------- Guess what? We wont need to make Short Swords this time! You've graduated up to making Sasumata spears (#40) which are the base for this weapon. In order to do that, you'll need a Ceremonial Tool and a Spirit of Fuji. And you will be making 3 Sasumatas total. Once done, combine a Steel with one of them and you have a Naginata (#42). Next, you'll need 2 Ethers and 2 Aquamarines. So combine 1 of each with each of the 2 Sasumatas to make 2 Tridents (#44). You're going to need yet 1 more Ether, a material called a Phlogiston, 1 Trident and the Naginata to make the Versatile Spear (#45). Finally, mix that with the second Trident,a Dark Crystal and a SUPER RARE material called Devil's Vein, of which there are only 2 in the whole game (read below paragraph for how to obtain it). Once done, you will have the coolish Chauve-souris spear!! And don't ask me how to pronounce it either, I don't have a clue (those silly French people)! -------------------- One way to get a Devil's Vein is stealing from Isaac the first time you fight him. He will do a certain move where he will do a sort of uppercut with the spear, which leaves the steal window open for a few seconds. Anyway, just look for the purple target. Even if you don't get it the first time, you will know exactly which move to look for. The other way is waiting towards the end, when Dracula's Castle rises out of the water, if you go back into the Forest of Jigramunt, go into a certain area in the northwest corner, according to the map. If you remember the area that had a long, narrow pool of water off to one side, that would be the right place to be. After Drac's castle rises, the pool will be drained and you can go into it and open a chest for the Devil's Vein. If you don't remember going there, just keep looking around in the northwest corner area, and go in all unexplored areas. Sooner or later you will find it. ============================================================================= Stealing Death's Pulse & Basic Death-Fighting Tips [DS6] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------- NOTE: READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION ONCE BEFORE YOU FIGHT DEATH SO YOU WILL KNOW WHAT HIS ATTACKS ARE, AND YOU WILL KNOW AT WHAT POINT YOU CAN STEAL DEATH'S PULSE AT. -------------------- Ah. This is it. The Death's Pulse is the final ingredient needed for the ultra-bad-ass-uber-super-duper-kick-ass-mighty-mega-uhhhh....ultra....yeah you get the idea, Death's Scythe. Unfortunately, of course there is only 1 way to get it and that's by stealing from Death himself (big surprise). This is obviously the rarest material in the whole game, duh, cause there's only 1! And of course, Konami had to make it nearly impossible to get also. So when you make it to Death, continue reading and I will tell you how exactly to get it. Ok. So you have just beaten Isaac the second time (who is amazingly not very hard, really), and now you are fighting the big bad Grim Reaper himself (or itself...whatever). Wow, he looks pretty freaky you might say. Freaky-Deeky. Yeah. Alright. So anyway, he has a total of 6 attacks I believe (and half of them involve fire). BTW, for this fight, I really recommend using the 7 Bladed Sword over the other 2, but whatever you're comfortable with. Also, you will want to start off with your best Battle ID: Corpsey if you have one. If not, something on the Juggernaut side is ok too. The Grim Reaper's first attack is where he throws a round, spinning fireball thingy at you, it's slow and pretty easy to dodge. Right before it hits you, just Double Step forwards (hold guard, press up and jump) and it will go right through you. But don't stop yet; it will turn around and come back for another pass at you. Just Double Step backwards or off to the side, depending on which way its traveling. Basically, just remember that while Single or Double Stepping, Hector is invincible, so use that whenever you are afraid of getting hit. It's good to get this technique down, because Death will spam this move. Another move that he tends to spam, is one where he calls up 8 or 10 spinning blades, which all seek you at the same time. Either Single Step left and right to dodge these (read: DO NOT Double Step this attack, because Hector's recovery time after flipping leaves him wide open to getting hit by one or more of the subsequent blades), OR Perfect Guard them. This is trickier, as you probably know, to get the timing down, and you wont want to try to PG all of them for that reason. It's easier, and better to Perfect Guard 1 or 2, then Single Step left or right, then PG another 1 or 2, etc...This tactic is better than just trying to dodge, or just flat out guarding, IMO, because whenever you Perfect Guard, you gain some hearts for your ID, which is great for your fairy, cause it helps you stay alive longer. If you get close to him, he will swing his scythe at you. Sometimes he will swing once, other times twice. It seems to be random as far as I can tell. Anyway, just double-jump it and if you are using the 7 Bladed Sword, you can start a mid-air combo on him, which not only will hurt him some (duh!) but also helps you stay suspended in-air until the purple stuff from the scythe is gone. If you use 1 of the other 2 weapons, you will just do a downward attack, and end up landing on or close to the scythe. The fourth "attack," which is not really that bad, is just ever so often, he will turn like transparent-red, and summon a giant hand (also transparent-red) which will try to hit you randomly. This attack doesn't seem to do much damage, and I don't know why they put it in. Anyway, just don't worry about it. The next one is called the Big Bang. I'm not sure if that's the official or unofficial name, but we'll call it that. This move happens the first time when you get Death down to half his life (i.e. no more blue). You will know it by this: he will put his hands together and create a round fireball in them. Now he will hold it for about 5 seconds, then rear back slowly and throw it at the ground close to you. Now comes the "holy craaaap!" part. It will create a massive ball of fire. Guess what? You don't want to be standing inside it unless you are invincible. You are going to want to get off to one side. Unless you have a Tiramisu fairy with the Invincible Vase ability, which I'm pretty sure you need in order to steal Death's Pulse. I think you can do it without, but that makes it EVEN harder than it normally is. So when his blue life bar gets down to about 10%, switch from your Battle or whatever fighting ID you have and get out your Tiramisu. If you don't have one or it is dead, you are basically screwed. Anyway, now you finish off his blue life bar the rest of the way, and about that time, he will start the Big Bang. This is important. When you first see him create the fireball, WAIT about 2 seconds, then cast the invincible ability on you and stand inside the huge fireball. The timing on this is CRUCIAL. If you do it too early, your invincibility will wear off before the fireball is done, and you will take damage and get knocked back. But if you wait too long, the steal window will not open (since Konami made it to where you can't steal while invincible). Experiment to find the right timing; I can't say for sure because I didn't have a stopwatch. You will want your invincibility to wear off at the same time the huge fireball gets done, then the steal window will open. But this is the next issue. The window only opens for about half a second!! So you have to be quick with the Circle button, and you may also have to jump-steal too, but sometimes not. Just keep trying, trust me, it will take a TON of tries before you finally steal Death's Pulse successfully, and the most annoying part is if you die or something, you'll have to get past Isaac all over again! Unless you are just really awesome at games or just have the greatest luck in the world, then you might be able to steal it the first or second try, but this is very unlikely. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trevor Jones, villajones_rocks@hotmail.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Death's Pulse is a tricky item to retriece and by far the hardest there is no doubt. There are two extremely effective way of elluding death's pulse and stealing from him but no matter how much you try, this will not be easy and luck is always welcome. To reach Death simply use any devil type and use magic circle to simply run under Death as he throw's his scythe and ranged attacks at you. It is best if your devil type has a bit of energy or it will run out before you reach him. As for stealing Death's Pulse. Get Death under half health or so and wait until he makes a massive explosion move. Don't get caught in it as it does heavy damage. Get Tiramisu, a fairy type devil, and use the invicible vase move which you can get by killing enemies. The timing for this is harder still. You can't steal while invicible so you have to time it so you outlast Death's "Big Bang" and still be able to steal within that 1 second gap. If you don't feel you can steal from Death but really want to just finish the game kill him. Then steal from him if you decide to do the "Boss rush mode", which I'm sure you will. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you finally get the Death's Pulse, you can immediately create Death's Scythe if you want, but Death is obviously tolerant to Dark element...but then again, the 7 Bladed Sword is Dark element also. So maybe it would be good to use the DS anyway, cause it *does* have +120 ATK for God's sake. Anyway, however you want, just finish him off and avoid his last attack, which is he will call down 5 pillars of fire onto you, so just Single Step to avoid them. At this point, he will mix up all his attacks. Either keep your fairy out or summon your best fighting ID, its up to you. After the fight, watch the cinema of Death crying like a 10 year old girl, and continue on. ============================================================================= Assembling Your New Uber Toy & What You Can Do With It [DS7] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yay! You have completed Death's Scythe by making the 3 weapons and obtaining the hard to get Death's Pulse! Let's celebrate!! Wooooooo-hooooooo!! Ok, that's enough celebrating, because you still have 1 more fight to go: Dracula!! But I'm not going into detail about this fight, other than just using invincibility as much as you can, that's a nice power. Also healing with either potions or your fairy when you get hurt. You know, the whole staying-alive-using-whatever-means-despite-seemingly-insurmountable-odds thing. Anyway, you can go ahead use DS against Drac, but if you want to try it out on normal enemies, register a Memorial Ticket at the save point after Death (and save if you want) then go back to Julia's shop (just use a Magical Ticket if you got one. if not, backtrack to before Isaac where you should find a warp room), do any trading you want (selling useless items, stocking up on Healing Potions, a Death Doll and Tickets, etc.), then you can do any fighting you want in order to power level for your final fight. I recommend going through the two towers (Eternity and Evermore) if you haven't already. If you have, go ahead and do it again (every bit of experience helps). Hey, with your new toy, the enemies *should* be pushovers, or at least, the ones in the first tower. It's not like you are on a time limit, so spend as much time power-leveling as you think you need. Don't worry at all about time, Dracula will still be there when you get back. Plus there's no real point in making an awesome weapon if you only get to use it for one boss fight! For any secrets not mentioned in this FAQ (that you think you may have missed, or just want to be sure you find them all), refer to other FAQs (not written by me) which explain how to get every secret. If you haven't fought the optional bosses Legion and Nuculais, go ahead and do it now. They are not that hard, especially since you have a weapon of mass spankage. They are located in Garibaldi Temple. Down in the southwest corner of the map, you'll see a "+" (plus) sign, with 4 rooms around it. You may or may not have been there before. Either way, go there and in the southwest of the 4 rooms (bottom-left), you'll see another room there. Go inside and straight ahead from the door, you'll see a fenced wall, and in the center of that will be a section of wall which looks cracked. No, you cannot break through the crack no matter what you try. You will need to bust out your Devil ID and use Magic Circle to get under it. Now, inside, fight the enemies that spawn, go along the hallways going into the rooms on the right-hand side if you want, and continue on until you reach an underground section in which a bunch of skeletons will spawn. Bottom of that, you'll find a save point, so save if you want, but don't register a Memorial Ticket if you already registered one at the save point after Death. There's really no need at all to register here, unless you just absolutely *NEED* to zip back to Julia and grab some potions or something. Ok, now continue down the path, killing/evading the Evil Cores, and come to a boss door. This is where Legion and Nuculais hang out. As far as strategies, I'm not going to go into that, so just look for a boss FAQ. But you should be able to figure it out yourself, and since you saved it right before (you did, right?), you can try as many times as needed. They really aren't that hard, and I believe Nuculais is weak to Dark, because he's a giant made out of Light. Lucky you now have a bad-ass Dark element weapon, huh? Anyway, whenever you get completely done playing around with the little enemies and leveling up, Mem-Ticket back to the save room after Death, or warp back to the warp room in Drac's castle (the one i told you about that's right before the Isaac fight) and take on the big man himself. He's pretty hard so take all the healing items you can and prepare for a good fight. Again, refer to a boss FAQ if you keep dying. After you beat the game, I don't know if you can start a new game with the DS and all the stuff you have acquired or not. But you can try to. Anyway, that's it for this FAQ, hope you enjoyed making Death's Scythe like I did! Thanks to Konami for making a great game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Death's Scythe Guide (c) shinobigarth, 2005.
