His name was Fame Douglas, and he was renowned as the sponsor of the legendary world battle championship 'Dead or Alive.' Since his death -- and in the absence of his charisma and leadership -- the world has become chaotic. Amid this chaos, it is announced that 'DOA2: HARDCORE Championship' will be held. However, Douglas' passing has taken with it the purpose and significance of the tournament. Even worse, the promoter of 'DOA2: HARDCORE Championship,' who is fond of conflicts and jealous of the strong, is responsible for Douglas' death. The new promoter is more than just a corrupt mastermind, but a man of pure evil. His involvement in the tournament has brought a sense of terror to the world, resulting in the infamous Tengu Disaster that occurred at the end of the 20th century. Modes of Play =- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore possesses many different modes of play. They are as follows: - Story: DOA2's story mode is basically the game's standard "Arcade" mode, in which you follow a story involving the character you've selected. It consists of a series of battles against computer opponents, and if you successfully defeat all of them, well... you win. - Time Attack: Practically the same thing as Story mode, except that you're now racing against the clock to defeat each of your opponents and eventually get a "Game Clear." - Versus: Battle against a friend. After each fight, the game automatically sends you back to the Character Select screen, allowing you to keep fighting against one another until you manually exit the mode. - Tag Battle: Tag Battle allows you to form a team of two characters and conduct a series of two-on-two battles against the computer. You can switch characters during a fight by simply pressing a combination of the Free, Punch, and Kick buttons (or you can just press R1 or R2). - Survival: This mode involves fighting against a neverending amount of computer opponents until you're defeated by one. Your main objective here is to simply obtain the highest total score at "Game Over." Please take note that after you've defeated a computer opponent, a small portion health is given back to you. - Team Battle: In Team Battle mode, you must compile a team of several different characters and take on the computer using tournament format, or you can fight against a friend. - Sparring: Sparring allows you to learn the basic systems and techniques of the game, and to practice moves freely. You can change the actions of the computer by opening the in-game menu and customizing the categories titled "COM 1ST ACTION" and "COM 2ND ACTION." - Watch: Watch mode allows you, the user to watch a computer-operated battle, of which lasts until the mode is turned off. - UPS (User Profile System): UPS mode allows the user to save and view the players' battle records and various other records using a standard PS2 memory card. - Battle Record: In this mode, you're allowed to record a battle between you and the computer, of which can viewed over and over again at your leisure. Keep in mind that you must save the replay after each fight to do this. - Options: Here you can adjust change various game settings to your suit your preferences. ******************************************************************************* =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Basic Techniques =- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Below you will find a wide variety of basic fighting techniques that will help you become a full-fledged "hardcore" fighter. Please take time to learn and master these, as you WILL need them during battles. ================ Basic Operations ================ - Character Movements: In order to successfully win a fight, you obviously have to move all around the screen. Use the D-Pad to simply move your character forwards and backwards, or use it to dash by double tapping left or right on it. To jump or crouch, simply press Up or Down on the D-Pad. - Free Steps: "Free Step" is basically a fancier, more professional term for sidestepping. Instead of simply tapping up or down twice on the D-Pad, you must press and hold Up in correspondence with the "Free" button to sidestep to the left, away from you. To "Free Step" to the right, or towards you, simply double-tap Down on the D-Pad and press the "Free" button at the same time. DOA2's "Free Step" system takes a little while to get used to, so don't be frustrated if you have a hard time with it when you first start playing. - Strikes: To win a fight, you must punch and kick your opponent until his or her health has been reduced to zero. Each character has his or her own special punch and kick combinations, commonly known as "Special Moves," which is what this guide is for: to list each character's specific moves. That being said, there are four different types of attacks: High, Middle, Low, and Super High. High attacks hit standing opponents, Middle attacks hit both standing and crouching opponents, Low attacks hit both standing and crouching oppoents, and Super High attacks hit standing opponents only. - Guarding: DOA2 features two different ways to go about guarding yourself against enemy attacks. The first way is to press and hold left (back) on the D-Pad. This allows your character to guard against High and Middle attacks. By double tapping and holding Down on the D-Pad, you can successfully guard yourself against low attacks. The second way of going about guarding is to simply utilize the "Free" button, otherwise known as the Square button. - Throws: When very close to your opponent, you can throw your opponents by pressing a combination of the "Free" and Punch buttons, or by simply pressing the X button. If your opponent is crouching, press down and the two buttons simultaneously to perform a Low throw. - Evade Throw: Unfortunately you can only evade standard throws, and there's nothing you can do to evade a Low throw executed by your opponent. To successfully evade an ordinary throw however, you must in turn press the X (throw) button at just the right moment. - Hold: Another nifty technique DOA2 has provided us with is the ability to "Hold" or counter your opponent's attacks. By properly timing the entry of your command against those of your opponent, you can successully perform a Hold and counter their attacks. To perform a High hold against high attacks, simply press diagonally up-left on the D-Pad and the "Free" button simultaneously. To perform a Middle hold, press left and "Free," and to perform a Low hold, press diagonally down-left and "Free." - Down Attacks: When you successfully knock an opponent to the ground, you can perform a "Follow-up" attack that allows you to strike him or her before they get back up. To do this, simply press Down and Punch or Down and Kick simultaneously. - Getting Up: After your character has been knocked to the ground, you're given a few different options on how to get back up. One of those options is to repeatedly tap the Punch button to get up quickly. If you press Up and "Free," you will perform side roll towards the back of the screen. Pressing Down and "Free" simultaneously will make your character do a side roll towards the front of the screen. Pressing the Kick button several times will allow you to perform a Middle kick on your opponent while getting up, and pressing Down and Kick will get you a Low kick on your opponent while getting up. ================= Other Useful Tips ================= - Attacks near a wall: In certain stages, using a powerful attack that launches your character in a certain direction can be extremely useful. I say this because if you use any one of these attacks on your opponent when they're close to a wall, you can send them flying into the wall and potentially do more damage. Some throws also change and become more powerful when near a wall. - Utilizing multiple-level stages: Some stages such as the "The Great Opera" and "The Crimson" have multiple levels. You can send your opponent off the edge of a stage by simply following the instructions above for a powerful striking attack near certain walls. This will send your opponent flying off the edge of the stage and down to the level below.
