Introduction D3000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Prior to my purchase of Drakengard, I had played a few Dynasty Warriors titles and found them rather interesting. As a result, when this game was released, I immediately considering buying it but waited for quite some time to do so. Fortunately, the game is quite well done and boasts a veritable cornucopia in terms of weaponry. It should be noted that Drakengard is not what one would term a typical console RPG, it closely resembles an action game like Dynasty Warriors but incorporates an almost trivial leveling system for characters and a more important one for weapons. Due to the significant role of the weapons in Drakengard, a comprehensive understanding of said weapons will be tremendously useful for knowing which weapons one ought to train and which to avoid. This is based on a purely subjective level and the ultimate decision is your own. I hope that this guide provides aid to those that seek it. Questions and comments can be emailed to me at the address above. Please do not ask me a question if it is explicitly answered in this document. Thank you. - Masamune167 - ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 04. Weaponry Declassification D4000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The weapons of Drakengard are loosely classified into eight major groups that encompass a total of 65 weapons, sixty-four of which must be unlocked by some method, which will be mentioned when necessary, and one weapon, Caim's Sword, is the default. When a weapon is first obtained, it will be at level 1 and require a certain number of kills in order to reach the next level. The maximum level for any given weapon is four. The number of kills is not affected by the difficulty of the enemies defeated or experience obtained, only the pure number of kills is of concern. Therefore it is preferable to fight hundreds of weak enemies rather than hundreds of more difficult ones. You can also level the weapons on the Easy difficulty setting with no ramifications. However, certain weapons require a Normal difficulty setting in order to be unlocked but those will be mentioned later. Weapon Levels =================== Each gained level will guarantee an increase in attack power and number of combo hits for a given weapon. Additionally, other possible increases may occur in weight or a modest increase in reach (although the given value will not change, the actual attack range may increase very slightly.) Another paragraph of the Weapon History will also be available upon each level-up. Since only the number of kills is used for calculating weapon level-ups, it is useful to know when they can occur. Weapons only level, meaning you can only see them level, after a battle in which their "Next Level" kills count is equal to zero. After said battle, the weapon will be shown to increase in level and the appropriate increases in attack strength and combo hit number are shown at this time as well. Additionally, kills DO carry over. This simply means that if a weapon is below a level of 3 and its "Next Level" kills count is zero and additional enemies are killed with the weapon, the extraneous kills will subtract from the NEXT LEVEL's "Next Level" kill count. For example, suppose there exists a weapon called "Time Scar" that has a "Next Level" kill count of zero. Assume it is currently at level 1. This means that the weapon can reach level 2 once the stage is complete (you MUST complete the stage, you cannot exit it prematurely). Suppose the following: Time Scar's Level 1 "Next Level" kill count initially: 400 Time Scar's Level 1 "Next Level" kill count after stage: 0 Time Scar's Level 2 "Next Level" kill count initially: 500 Time Scar's Level 2 "Next Level" kill count after stage: 460 Now if 40 extra kills were made with Time Scar at level 1 AFTER its "Next Level," these would be subtracted from its initial level 2 "Next Level" kill count. Then Time Scar's Level 2 "Next Level" kill count would be 460. From this we can deduce that each weapon has a total number of kills necessary to max said weapon. The intermediate levels are relatively arbitrary except that they trigger level changes in the weapons. Weapon Leveling Methods ============================= As stated, weapons level by attaining a certain number of kills for the weapon. Therefore, maps with many weak enemies are preferable for this task. Here is a short list of maps with many weak enemies: 01. Chapter 01, Verse 02 02. Chapter 01, Verse 08 03. Castle of the Goddess, Castle Environs [Free Expedition] I suggest leveling on the Easy difficulty since it will make the process that much faster. Utilize dash attacks on large groups of enemies. Think of it as bowling and aim for a strike. You can almost always kill a group of eight weak soldiers with one dash attack with a moderately strong weapon. Magic can also be very useful, especially if it has a large range or is target-seeking. Any kills due to a magic attack WILL count toward the weapon that you currently have equipped, not necessarily the one that caused the magic to take place. Therefore, one could use a weapon like Windsinger to produce a magic attack that surrounds Caim for a duration of time, switch to another weapon and proceed to kill enemies with the magic attack still around Caim. All those kills will go to the alternate weapon, not to Windsinger since Windsinger is not currently equipped. Weapon Attributes ======================= There exist seven data displayed on the weapon menu screens: Attack Strength, Sharpness, Reach, Weight, Material, Combo Hits, and Next Level. Finishing blows, chain attacks, and dash attacks will be explained as well. Attack Strength: --------------- Attack Strength clearly indicates the amount of damage a weapon can deal though the number given is not necessarily the exact point value of the damage dealt. The higher the attack strength of a weapon, the higher the estimated mean damage output. Sharpness: --------- Sharpness seems to give some indication as to how the weapon is wielded. Sharp weapons tend to slash and stab more than blunt ones, whereas large, blunt weapons have smashing and sweeping attacks. Sharp weapons are also less likely to knock enemies over since they will slice through them with little resistance. Blunt and Edged weapons knock over opponents very often. Reach: ----- Reach is just the attack range of a weapon, however the classifications for reach represent a range of values, therefore a sword with "Long" reach may actually have a slightly smaller reach than another sword of "Long" reach, but both will be in the range for a "Long" reach. For example, the long sword Moonfire actually has a slightly longer reach than Slaughterism despite the fact that both of them have a "Long" reach. Weight: ------ Weight effects the speed with which a weapon is wielded. Obviously, heavier weapons are slower than smaller, light ones. Material: -------- This does not seem to objectively effect anything of importance. Combo Hits: ---------- Indicates the number of successive attacks that can be made until a small pause must be taken. The higher the number the better usually. Next Level: ---------- The number of kills needed to reach the next weapon level. See the above "Weapon Levels" section for specific information regarding this topic. Finishing Blows: --------------- Finishing blows occur when a weapon is swung and a small golden glow appears on the weapon mid-swing. At that time, if the Triangle (T) button is pressed then a mighty blow is delivered either as a circular blast or a projectile. These finishing blows occur at different strokes for each specific weapon, so one can simply memorize when they occur for a weapon and always land them. Note that the closer to the maximum number of combo hits you are for a particular weapon, the more powerful the finishing blow. For example, a finishing blow on the seventh stroke of a combo (NOT a chain) will be more powerful than one on the first stroke. You can practice finishing blows without the presence of enemies if needed. These extra-powerful attacks also carry a distinct lag time before their execution. Not only will the stroke itself take longer, it will only take effect two strokes after triangle is pressed. For example, if the finishing blow pattern for a weapon is 1,3,6,10 and the triangle button is pressed on after the first square button, the finishing blow will take effect on the third stroke. Chain Attacks: ------------- Not to be confused with Combo Hits, Chain Attacks are counted by the game whenever you attack an enemy. The small counter in the left-hand corner will count your chain number thus far. As far as I know, there isn't any hard cap on the chain you can get, but this depends entirely on the user's skill. The benefit of chain attacks is that it can yield healing and destruction orbs at certain levels of the chain: 17, 36, 57, 77, 100, 150. Healing orbs are the first to appear in increasing increments. At a chain of 100, a black orb will appear that increases your current attack strength for a period of time. If your health is full at the point that a healing orb should appear, then a large red orb will appear that will explode and deal damage to your enemies equivalent to a strike from your weapon. Even the red orbs become stronger at higher chain counts. Note that on the Easy difficulty, orbs appear earlier in the chain and red orbs NEVER appear. Since the chain count increases whenever you hit an enemy and whenever you kill an enemy, it is easiest to maintain a high chain count with a quick, weak weapon. However, all enemies have a counterattack ability that will make them invincible for a few seconds, allowing them to hit you once. They will flash blue just before this happens, so dodge it. Dash Attacks: ------------ Dash Attacks are performed when Caim is sprinting and the attack button is pressed. This will cause him to perform a piercing, outward strike that can deal impressive damage and has surprising range. The alternative is to jump as Caim is sprinting and press the attack button to cause an explosive all direction attack with smaller range than the horizontal strike. These are very effective against groups of weak enemies. Weapon Nomenclature and Declassification ============================================== The eight major groups of weapons are sometimes inadequate for describing a particular weapon. Below is a list of the eight groups and the different types of weapons they contain: Sword: short swords, daggers, knives, chakram, machetes Long Sword: long swords, broad swords, great-swords, katanas, nodachis Spear: spears, jousting spears, tridents, spades, lances Staff: scepters, staves Axe: axes, great axes Pole Axe: pole axes, halberds, bardiches, scythes Mace: maces, clubs Hammer: hammers, war hammers As noted, many weapon types are classified in one group to save space. Weapon Profiles D5000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This section will deal with very in-depth, comprehensive profiles of every weapon available in the game. Spoilers abound, so be careful of what you read. If you only want to know where to find particular weapons, please consult the appropriate "Quick Reference" list. Note that there are not any storyline spoilers, just weaponry-related ones. Each profile will contain information about a weapon at each level of its evolution along with specific weapon histories. Author comments will be noted in the "Comments" paragraph of each profile. Below is a sample of what a single weapon profile will look like. Note that the sample weapon is not in the game. (1) Name of the weapon as it appears in the game. (2) Name of the magic attack the weapon grants the user. (3) Various flags that may or may not appear. Consult the flag legend for information on particular flag meanings. (4) Unique search string given to a weapon to allow for quick access. (5) The Weapon History text as shown in the game weapon menus. Each paragraph break is identical to that of the in-game paragraph break. (6) Weapon status as shown in the game weapon menus. However, there are some key differences. If values are split by a "/" marker, then this divides values between levels. In the above sample, the attack strength at level 1 is 43, at level 2 it is 54, at level 3 it is 67 and so on. (7) Weapon information as shown on the game weapon menus. (8) Magic information as shown on the game weapon menus. For this example, since the magic only becomes more powerful and does not increase in time duration nor number of strikes, the magic description is the same for all levels of the attack. (9) The information needed to obtain the particular weapon. From this example one can see that it is only possible to obtain the weapon on Normal difficulty. (10) The stroke numbers at which finishing blows are possible. In the example above, finishing blows can occur on the 1st, 24th, 55th, and 120th strikes of the weapon. (11) Number of green dots (MP) used to perform a Level 1,2,3,4 magic attack. Note that all weapons can perform a Level 1 magic attack even if the weapon is at Level 4. The exceptions are magic attacks that have equal MP consumption for all levels or don't use the 5,10,15,20 scheme. (12) Author comments about the weapon and/or magic attack. -= Flag Legend =- --------------------- F01 = Weapon's magic attack is explosive, each strike lasting only seconds. = Finishing blow produces a large, explosive, circular blast around Caim. = Weapon's magic attack's area of effect is around Caim in a circle. = Weapon's magic attack lasts for a set duration of time. This is inherent with both and type magics. Any time under 5 seconds is considered explosive. = Weapon can be obtained on Easy Difficulty. In this case, the weapon can also be unlocked on Normal and this will not be indicated. = Weapon's magic attack spins around Caim and widens gradually in a gyre. = Weapon's magic attack heals Caim. = Weapon's magic attack causes self-inflicted damage to Caim. = Weapon is unlockable ONLY on Normal Difficulty. = Weapon's magic attack's area of effect surrounds Caim in a non-circular formation. = Finishing blow produces a single projectile that thrusts forward away from Caim. = Weapon's magic attack shoots outward directly away from Caim. Some magic attacks of this kind may be target-seeking at higher levels. = Weapon's magic attack spins around or exists only around Caim for a duration of time. = Weapon's magic attack is target-seeking. This may only take effect at higher levels of the attack. = Weapon's magic attack protects Caim by reducing damage directly. = Weapon's magic attack produces strikes depending on Caim's viewing direction. = Weapon's magic attack alters Caim's attack power. = Weapon's magic attack alters Caim's speed of movement. --------------------- Weapons addressed in this section are as follows: 01.
