The purpose of this FAQ is to update the ratings of the players in the game, to make them as accurate as possible, as well as to represent what they have accomplished during the 2003-2004 season, and to educate readers on NBA history. Any updates to player ratings or major changes to the FAQ will be listed in the Updates section. Check it whenever a new version comes out. *********************************************************************** II. Legal Information This FAQ was made 100% by me, John "Rashidi" Markisch. Created Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Larry Bird, Bernard King, and Charles Barkley. Updated the rosters. It's been awhile since my last update, I've been having PS2 problems (Disc Read Error) and have been slightly addicted to MVP Baseball 2004. I haven't given up on this, but I definitely have spent less time on this guide in March and April compared to every other month of this season. I had the content necessary to submit an update, but was too lazy to do so for awhile. Version 2.3 (3/14/04) Edited Peja Stojakovic, Shawn Marion, Jamal Mashburn, Andrei Kirilenko, Carmelo Anthony, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, Jerry Stackhouse, Rashard Lewis, Richard Jefferson, Jalen Rose, Keith Van Horn, Matt Harpring, Corey Maggette, Mike Dunleavy, Tim Thomas, Caron Butler, Desmond Mason, Shane Battier, and Kurt Thomas. Added Christian Laettner (96-97) to the players adjusted to specific year section. Also edited Lebron James and Tom Gugliotta from this section. Created a CAP section for the 2004 Draft class. It will get more in-depth as more information is released on the upcoming draft class, especially around draft time. Added Dwight Howard and Sebastian Telfair to this section. Believe it or not, I haven't updated in 4 days, I've been too busy playing MVP Baseball 2004. Version 2.2 (3/7/04) I accidentally decided to edit pretty much every shooting guard. Added Bob Sura, Juan Dixon, Keith Bogans, Roger Mason, Eddie House, Casey Jacobsen, Fred Jones, Boris Diaw, Travis Hansen, and Jeff Trepagnier. Edited Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Michael Finley, Michael Redd, Richard Hamilton, Eddie Jones, Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell, Cuttino Mobley, Bonzi Wells, Jason Richardson, Ricky Davis, Joe Johnson, Larry Hughes, Kerry Kittles, Jamal Crawford, Doug Christie, Emanuel Ginobili, Quentin Richardson, Mike Miller, Reggie Miller, Aaron McKie, Dajuan Wagner, Jiri Welsch, Gordan Giricek, Jarvis Hayes, Courtney Alexander, Jon Barry, Tony Delk, Deshawn Stevenson, Steve Smith, Anthony Peeler, Shandon Anderson, Dermarr Johnson, Casey Jacobsen, Trenton Hassell, Kareem Rush, Zoran Planinic, Fred Hoiberg, Tamar Slay, and Kedrick Brown. Oops. In all fairness, that's probably the final update on a lot of these guys. At least for this year. Version 2.1 (3/3/04) Edited Baron Davis, Jason Kidd, Stephon Marbury, Sam Cassell, Gary Payton, Steve Nash, Mike Bibby, Andre Miller, Chauncey Billups, Gilbert Arenas, Jason Terry, Brent Barry, Jason Williams, Dwyane Wade, Kirk Hinrich, Damon Stoudamire, TJ Ford, Antonio Daniels, Darrell Armstrong, Troy Hudson, Jeff McInnis, Craig Claxton, Lebron James, Jamal Crawford, and Derek Anderson. Rashidi did all that work for you on his birthday. How sweet of him. Version 2.0 (3/2/04) They finally put up the February roster download. The changes made in it will be reflected in my next update. Man, they really screwed a bunch of stuff up. VC really needs to hire me or something, because this is getting really bad. The ratings almost remind me of NBA Live, they make little sense. But anyway, here were my changes. Added Dion Glover, Bostjan Nachbar, Samaki Walker, and Nazr Mohammed. Edited Bobby Jackson, Nick Van Exel, Lebron James, TJ Ford, Dwayne Wade, Eric Snow, Earl Boykins, Leandro Barbosa, Charlie Ward, Steve Blake, Rafer Alston, Tyronn Lue, Earl Watson, Howard Eisley, Damon Jones, Joe Johnson, David Wesley, Aaron McKie, Penny Hardaway, Peja Stojakovic, Lamar Odom, Carmelo Anthony, Richard Jefferson, Ricky Davis, Caron Butler, Keith Van Horn, Scottie Pippen, Tayshaun Prince, Jim Jackson, Devean George, Robert Horry, Michael Sweetney, Othella Harrington, Vlade Divac, and Mehmet Okur. Added Steve Kerr, Michael Jordan (Wizards), John Markisch, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Arvydas Sabonis to the CAPs section, and edited the Raul Lopez, Ronald Murray, Willie Green, Ronald Dupree, Kyle Korver, and Daniel Santiago CAPs. Updated the rosters and depth charts. Version 1.9 (2/16/04) Added Dahntay Jones, Jumaine Jones, Chris Mills, Keon Clark, David West, Robert Traylor, Lorenzen Wright, Dale Davis, Chris Mihm, Mark Blount, Kendrick Perkins, and Jake Voskuhl. Edited Gary Payton, Baron Davis, Steve Francis, Mike Bibby, Andre Miller, Lebron James, Jeff McInnis, Marko Jaric, Paul Pierce, Michael Redd, Bonzi Wells, Doug Christie, Reggie Miller, Joe Johnson, Keith Van Horn, Toni Kukoc, Scottie Pippen, Rick Fox, Jermaine O'Neal, Elton Brand, Zach Randolph, Donyell Marshall, Vin Baker, Walter McCarty, Radoslav Nesterovic, Brian Grant, Theo Ratliff, Derrick Coleman, Adonal Foyle, Elden Campbell, Michael Doleac, and DeSagana Diop. Added Willie Green to the CAPs section, and edited Marquis Daniels. Updated the rosters. Version 1.8 (2/8/04) Added DerMarr Johnson, Clifford Robinson, Al Harrington, Joe Smith, Jerome Moiso, and Jake Tsakalidis. Edited Stephon Marbury, Frank Williams, Moochie Norris, Allan Houston, Michael Redd, Penny Hardaway, Shandon Anderson, Amare Stoudemire, Antonio McDyess, Shaquille O'Neal, Yao Ming, Brad Miller, Erick Dampier, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Marcus Camby, Kurt Thomas, Jamaal Magloire, Dikembe Mutombo, and Samuel Dalembert. I completed my 300th player. Only 146 or so to go (depending on how many are added in the next roster update). Last year's trade deadline roster update was the most in-depth of 2k3's roster updates, so hopefully it will hold true this year (especially since there was no January roster download). My next update will probably be after their next update. But don't hold me to that. Oh, and I won a Sharkport on Ebay, so pretty soon I'll have my own downloadable roster. Stay tuned. Version 1.7 (2/1/04) Added Courtney Alexander, Wesley Person, Jon Barry, Anthony Peeler, Kareem Rush, Trenton Hassell, Hubert Davis, Morris Peterson, Lamond Murray, Eric Williams, Ira Newble, Stacey Augmon, Nene, Maurice Taylor, Malik Rose, Eddie Griffin, Christian Laettner, Kelvin Cato, Mark Madsen, Stromile Swift, Peja Drobnjak, Brendan Haywood, and Bruno Sundov. Edited Lebron James (for the zillionth time), Kirk Hinrich, Earl Watson, Clarence Weatherspoon, Stanislav Medvedenko, Samuel Dalembert, and Cezery Trybanski. Added CAPs for Erick Barkley, Omar Cook, Harold Miner, Marquis Daniels, Ronald Dupree, Brian Cardinal, Darius Songalia, Gheorghe Muresan, and Zaza Pachulia. Edited Michael Jordan, and Oliver Miller. Updated the rosters and depth charts. Version 1.6 (1/18/04) Added Tierre Brown, Larry Hughes, Quentin Richardson, David Wesley, Dajuan Wagner, Voshon Lenard, Darius Miles, Steve Smith, Rodney White, Brandon Armstrong, Jim Jackson, Ruben Patterson, James Posey, Glen Rice, Monty Williams, Gerald Wallace, Juwan Howard, Drew Gooden, Antonio Davis, P.J. Brown, Etan Thomas, Tom Gugliotta, John Wallace, Chris Andersen, Erick Dampier, Jamaal Magloire, Adonal Foyle, Theo Ratliff, Raef LaFrentz, Danny Fortson, Eddy Curry, Mehmet Okur, Tony Battie, Marc Jackson, Shawn Bradley, Calvin Booth, Brian Skinner, Samuel Dalembert, Cezery Trybanski, Steven Hunter, DaSagana Diop, and Ruben Boumtje Boumtje. Edited Sam Cassell, Mark Jackson, Matt Harpring, Scottie Pippen, Kenny Thomas, Elden Campbell, and Michael Doleac. So I added 42 players, edited 7, and threw in a bunch of CAPs, in about 11 days. I'm making amazing progress. Yinka Dare passed away (normally I would insert a "4 career assists in 4 pro seasons" passing joke here, but let's be respectful). In honor of Yinka's memory, I have decided to recreate him in all his splendor. Check the CAPs section. Also new to the CAPs section is Mark Price, Spud Webb, Patrick Ewing, Rik Smits, Luc Longley, and Bill Wennington. Also edited was Kyle Korver and Slavko Vranes. I started adding more info to the CAPs like jersey numbers, height/weight, college, and stuff like that. Looking them up isn't really high on my priority list, so if someone else wants to look up the missing info for the CAPS it is missing for (please read the CAP section and see which I did it for or not) I left missing for and e-mail it to me. I'll give proper credit of course. Version 1.5 (1/7/04) ESPN released their December roster update, and they will be reflected in my FAQ. The notable changes in the roster download were changing Zach Randolph to an 83 overall, and a few position changes. I made a VERY big change. From now on, I will be marking the players I edit or add with (NEW-Edit) or (NEW-Add). It should be obvious what each should stand for. That way you can use Ctrl+F and find what I have updated faster and easier. And you'll need this, because I edited quite a few players in the past week. This is probably the biggest edit batch I'll ever do. I edited *inhale* Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Sam Cassell, Jason Terry, Gilbert Arenas, Andre Miller, Bobby Jackson, Chauncey Billups, Jason Williams, Brent Barry, Lebron James, TJ Ford, Dwyane Wade, Carlos Arroyo, Damon Stoudamire, Eric Snow, Jeff McInnis, Mike James, Marko Jaric, Luke Ridnour, Jamaal Tinsley, Kenny Anderson, Erick Strickland, Frank Williams, Brevin Knight, Tyronn Lue, Reece Gaines, Steve Blake, Milt Palacio, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Michael Finley, Latrell Sprewell, Michael Redd, Jason Richardson, Doug Christie, Emanual Ginobili, Kerry Kittles, Reggie Miller, Joe Johnson, DeShawn Stevenson, Shandon Anderson, Kedrick Brown, Rashard Lewis, Jalen Rose, Andrei Kirilenko, Richard Jefferson, Matt Harpring, Grant Hill, Keith Van Horn, Scottie Pippen, Aleksander Pavlovic, Bryon Russell, Raja Bell, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone, Zach Randolph, Kenyon Martin, Antonio McDyess, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Robert Horry, Othella Harrington, Maciej Lampe, Stanislav Medvedenko, Yao Ming, Brad Miller, Michael Olowokandi, Marcus Camby, Elden Campbell, and Radoslav Nesterovic. *exhale* Added John Salmons, Shammond Williams, Lindsey Hunter, Damon Jones, Bryce Drew, Jiri Welsch, Lamar Odom, Tayshaun Prince, Tyson Chandler, Gordan Giricek, Eric Piatkowski, Tariq Abdul- Wahad, Ndudi Ebi, Travis Outlaw, Antoine Walker, Pau Gasol, Kenny Thomas, Rodney Rogers, Jason Collins, Aaron Williams, and Mark Pope. So I edited 72 players and added 21. Not too shabby. And even though I only added 21 players, Walker, Gasol, and Odom were pretty much the best players I had yet to include in the FAQ. You may also notice that I now have finished every PG on an NBA roster in the game (read as: except for the crappy free agents). As for the CAPS section, I created Maurice Williams, Matt Carroll, Tremaine Fowlkes, Ruben Wolkowyski, Oliver Miller, and also edited Raul Lopez, Ronald Murray, and Kyle Korver. Also re-created the 96-97 version of Tom Gugliotta, which should please Lionheart. Oh yeah, I also updated the rosters, there were plenty of trades. Robert Archibald was dealt ten times in a week, and Marbury was traded to the Knicks. I will also be taking steps to deal with the plagaristic websites that love my work so much that they feel the need to post it without my permission. All you need to do is ask. Be professional. Version 1.4 (12/20/03) Added 19 new players. Edited Jason Terry, Lebron James, Carlos Arroyo, Mike James, Vince Carter, Fred Hoiberg, Carmelo Anthony, Scottie Pippen, Devean George, Rick Fox, Zach Randolph, Kenyon Martin, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Elden Campbell, Dikembe Mutombo, and Radoslav Nesterovic. Created Robert Pack, Isiah Rider, Sean Elliott, two Larry Johnson CAPs (a Charlotte version and a New York version), Brian Scalabrine, and a speculational Lebron James in his prime CAP. Edited the Raul Lopez, Ronald Murray, John Starks, and Lonny Baxter CAPs. Updated the rosters and edited the depth charts some more. Version 1.3 (12/7/03) My biggest update ever. Added a whopping 67 new players to the FAQ, and also edited the rosters. Edited Baron Davis, Stephon Marbury, Steve Francis, Gilbert Arenas, Chauncey Billups, Lebron James, Carlos Arroyo, Mike James, Kevin Ollie, Allan Houston, Bonzi Wells, Shawn Marion, Richard Jefferson, Keith Van Horn, Zach Randolph, Vin Baker, Shaquille O'Neal, and Michael Doleac. Created Muggsy Bogues, Milos Vujanic, Raul Lopez, Ronald Murray, Dennis Rodman, Lonny Baxter, and Daniel Santiago. Updated the rosters, and added more players. If you check the Progress Review, you'll notice that I finally completed my first team, the Knicks. Although I'm sure a few players will receive a few revisions along the way (like McDyess when he comes back) it's a good sign that I completed a team 100%. Heck, you can even find Slavko Vranes in the CAP section to complete their roster. With my luck though, they'll probably make a trade. Version 1.2 (11/17/03) Sega finally did something in their roster update. They added Alexsander Pavlovic, and also changed a few player positions, which I'll be adding to the FAQ. Added more players. Edited Lebron James, Marcus Banks, Alvin Williams, Jamaal Tinsley, Marko Jaric, Carlos Arroyo, Milt Palacio, Penny Hardaway, and Slavko Vranes. Created Michael Jordan, Kevin Johnson, and Dennis Scott. Version 1.1 (11/4/03) Added quite a few players, mostly at the PG, PF, and C positions. Also edited Jason Kidd and Lebron James. Created Kyle Korver, Slavko Vranes, and John Starks. Added a few teams to the Created Teams section. Version 1.0 (10/29/03) Put out the layout of the FAQ to get it up there. *********************************************************************** IV. Progress Review Here are the stats for what I have completed so far. This information will be useful, to see the rate at which I am progressing. How do the ratings work? First, what are the rating categories? Rate (Overall Rating) Close (Shot Close) Med (Shot Medium) 3pt (Shot 3pt) FT (Free Throw) Layup (Layup) Dunk (Dunk) DnkRng (Dunk Range) - hidden rating DnkSt (Dunk Standing) - hidden rating Handle (Ball Handling) Pass (Pass) OffCl (Offense Clutch) - hidden rating Sh/Ps (Shoot or Pass) - hidden rating PostOff (Low Post Offense) PostDef (Low Post Defense) Def (Defense) - hidden rating Block (Block) Steal (Steal) DefCl (Defense Clutch) - hidden rating RebOff (Offensive Rebounding) RebDef (Defensive Rebounding) Speed (Speed) Stam (Stamina) Dur (Durability) DefAwr (Defensive Awareness) OffAwr (Offensive Awareness) Now, what do the ratings do? Overall Rating - The numerical average of the player's total collection of abilities. Not all ratings are equal. Some affect overall more than others, and some don't affect it at all. Some ratings are also more important to certain player positions than others, and thus have more of an impact on overall. Close Shot - Two-point shooting accuracy (inside the paint). Medium Shot - Two-point shooting accuracy (outside the paint). 3pt Shot - Three-point shooting accuracy. Free Throw - Free Throw shooting accuracy. Layup - Layup accuracy, frequency, and creativity. Dunk - Dunk accuracy, frequency, and creativity. Dunk Range - The distance from which a player can dunk. Dunk Standing - Ball Handling - Determines how effective a player will be at using Isomotion crossovers. A higher rating also makes it harder to steal the ball from the player. Pass - Determines the accuracy and speed of passes made by the player. A higher rating also makes it harder to steal passes from the player. Offense Clutch - Determines how much better a player will perform offensively in clutch situations (The 4th Quarter and OT). Shoot or Pass - This rating determines how frequently a player will look to shoot when they have the ball. A high rating means they will look for their shot, while a low rating means they will usually pass off. Post Offense - Effectiveness of offensive post moves. Post Defense - Effectiveness of defending a player in the post. Defense - Block - Ability to block the opponent's shot. Steal - Ability to steal the ball from the opponent, or pick off a pass. Defense Clutch - Determines how much better a player will perform defensively in clutch situations (The 4th Quarter and OT). RebOff - Ability to grab offensive rebounds. RebDef - Ability to grab defensive rebounds. Speed - How fast the player runs down the court. Stamina - The rate of which players grow tired. Durability - Resistance to injury. Players with low Durability will suffer injuries more frequently, and the injuries will me more serious. Defensive Awareness - Determines how effective a player will execute in defensive plays. Offensive Awareness - Determines how effective a player will execute in offensive plays. *********************************************************************** VI. The ratings Ratings will be done in descending order, from highest overall, to lowest overall. This should work best, because the top players are the ones most of you will want to edit first. Doing it by team is bad, because players change teams a lot, especially in the offseason. If you want to find the ratings for specific players, Ctrl + F is your best friend. Seriously. If you ever complain about not being able to find something in an FAQ, it means you are computer illiterate, because Ctrl + F is very easy. Press the Ctrl key. Hold it. Then press F. Then enter the name of something you are searching for. Make sure you can spell it correctly. *********************************************************************** A. The only other players in NBA history to put up assist and rebound numbers like him? Magic and the Big O. That's actually the main reason why people are making a big deal about this Lebron character. Jason Kidd was actually the original Lebron James, he was packing the house in high school the same way, but no TV deal. Supposedly he had NBA court vision by the 8th grade. Wouldn't surprise me. If Kidd retired today, he'd make the Hall of Fame. Not bad for "a PG that can't shoot". Was named to the All-NBA First team for the fifth time in six years this year (the one year he missed being 02-03, when 2 SGs were on the first team). Marbury never got to play with Van Horn, Kittles, and Martin healthy, and he never had Jefferson, Collins, or MacCulloch on his team either. Of course, the fact that it took the addition of Amare to get the Suns back to the playoffs should also say something... Well, Marbury is now playing for the Knicks, the team he has always dreamed up playing for. This returns him to Keith Van Horn, a player he once put in the talent pool of Jim McIlvaine and Gheorghe Muresan. But don't expect them to hate each other this time. Marbury is joining a lineup where the other 4 starters all have NBA Finals experience. Come to think of it, most of the Knick team does have Finals experience. The departed Eisley and Ward had it, while newcomer Penny also has it. Very significant since Marbury will probably be leading the Knicks to the playoffs this season. He does have a flaw though. He's not a PG. He puts up way too many turnovers considering his assist total is only 6. So why doesn't he make the switch? His best friend Cuttino Mobley plays SG. If Francis switches, Mobley gets traded. While putting friends first is an admirable quality, it's not going to get him any rings. Should be very interesting to watch this year. Jeff Van Gundy will probably want to utilize Yao a lot more, which could result in Francis' scoring go down, but for the better. JVG is also a Pat Riley defense freak, so I wonder what he'll think about the Rockets, who were one of the worst defensive teams in basketball. Steve Nash is one of them (he was born in South Africa). Everybody's favorite non-wrestler/hockey player (like there's a difference) Canadian was just named MVP of the Olympic qualifying tournament, after leading the tournament in assists. Was a third string PG behind Jason Kidd and Kevin Johnson while with the Suns. When he arrived in Dallas, he broke out at the same time as Nowitzki, transforming Dallas from pitiful to great. He just signed with the Suns, the team that originally drafted him. This is a great move for the Suns, in fact I think it was a better move for them than going after Kobe. Nash is one of the best floor generals in the game, he's going to be throwing a lot of lobs to Amare, Marion, and Joe Johnson. He should certainly bring them to greater success than Stephon Marbury ever did, and definitely will bring Phoenix back to the playoffs as long as their players continue to develop and barring injury. One of the most exciting players in the league. Has much improved since his Sacramento showboating days. Still showboats, but no longer commits turnovers. Had the second highest assist to turnover ratio in the league, only behind Kevin Ollie (which means he had the highest ratio among starting PGs). Was second in the NBA in assists per minute, only behind John Stockton. Second in assists per game, only behind Jason Kidd. White man can jump. Could be a decent scorer if he wanted to. Averaged 5 apg even when Gary Payton was still in Seattle. Coincidently, the last time the Clippers made the playoffs, he was on the team. For some strange reason, Pat Riley traded the still effective Issac Austin for Barry. Barry wasn't even added to the playoff roster, and Miami, missing it's depth at center, lost in the playoffs as usual. Easily the best of Rick Barry's 3 sons. Became Dallas' leader in the playoffs. As much as the Mavs needed a SF, he'll be missed. Sure, he came off the bench for two years. But he's still as good as Gilbert Arenas. He's certainly a much better passer. The only question is his durability. Back when he was with LA, he was talking about retiring early because of his bad knees. Being on the bench in Dallas helped prolong his career. He shouldn't get that many minutes this year, even though he'll be starting again. Probably around 30 minutes. Speedy Claxton shouldn't complain. NVE hates playing on bad teams as much as Latrell Sprewell, so the ride won't be without bumps, and Golden State would probably be wise to move him to a contender ASAP to take advantage of his high value. Then again, if the Warriors played in the east, they'd be in the playoffs. They have 2 decent centers, one of the better rebounding PFs in the league, a star PG, a rising SG, another young SG off the bench, and the third pick from last year that should love Jamison's PT and NVE's run and gun style. Still, most PGs struggle in their first year or two in the league, and Parker thus far has not struggled as much in comparison (Gary Payton did not score in double figures until his third season).
