MM All credit goes to Skip Barber Racing School and the makers of the Gran Turismo series. *The Goal The primary goal of a race driver is to cover the course, whether it's an oval or road course, in the minimum amount of time. Racing courses consist of straight-aways and corners. If we work on minimizing the time spent driving through corners and slowing down, we can come up with a plan for reaching our goal of being the fastest driver on the racetrack. *The Limit It is important to remember that a tire is the only physical contact a car has with the road. And, at any given time, that tire is only capable of 100% traction. When you accelerate, turn of brake, you begin dividing that traction between these three tasks. Under full acceleration, the tire is using 100% of its traction to move the car forward. If you want to use 20% of the tire's traction for braking, you will be left with only 20% traction for turning. Driving a racecar through a turn is a systematic compromise between these forces. How do we determine the maximum speed of a turn? This question is entirely dependent on the maximum radius of the arc or the turn. As a car travels faster around a turn, the tires must work harder to maintain the line. If you increase your speed, but hold your steering input the same, the radius of the turn will increase. Therefore, as speed increases, the radius increases until the car is no longer able to stay on the road. At this point you have exceeded the maximum speed of the turn. _____________________________________________________________________________ | iX28M 0SSBr | | ;MMMMMMM@ MMMMM TRACTION | | MMMM: MMM GUIDE | |XMB :2 M@M | |BM MMMM,MM2 As a car travels faster around a circular path, the tires| | M MMM MMM use increasing amounts of their potential traction to | | BM force the car to continue to change direction. | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | FORCE | FORCE | FORCE | | | | 1/10 total | | | 5/10 total | | | 10/10 total | | V V traction | V V traction | V V traction | | 12 mph | 27 mph | 38.7 mph | | ,;'';. \ | ,;'';. \ | ,;'';. \ | | ;; ;; \ | ;; ;; \ | ;; ;; \ | | ;; ;; | | ;; ;; | | ;; ;; | | | ;; ;; V | ;; ;; V | ;; ;; V | | ;; ;; | ;; ;; | ;; ;; | | `:..:' | `:..:' | `:..:' | |_________________________|________________________|__________________________| There are Three Basic Problems to Solve in Racing: 1) Driving on the best path (The Line) 2) Carrying speed away from the corners onto the straight-aways (Corner Exit Speed) 3) Efficiently showing the car at the entry of a corner (Braking) *The Line ____________________________ Simply defined, the line is the optimum path | ..,,------------- | a racetrack. In corners, this path is usually the| ,,;; ,:ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ | largest radius arc that can fit into the confines| :: .:' | of the turn. The line can vary with track | :: ,' | conditions and the type of racecar being driven. | :: ,' | | :: / ,--------------- | As shown in the chart to the right, driving up a | :: /,'R1 | corner, you have several choices about how to | |R2 / | | drive through it. You can drive around the inside| | |' | | corner, but you're restricted to the smallest | | | | | radius possible (R1). You can make the radius | | |' | | through the corner bigger yet by driving around | | | | | the outside corner (R2) - the radius of R2 is | | |' | | bigger than R1, so maximum speed will be higher. | | | | | | ||' | | The best line, however, is to start the arc | || | | before the corner along the outside of the road, | ||R3 | | touch the inside edge of the road roughly half- |____________________________| way through the corner, and touch the outside edge of the road again at the exit. If you do this, you can use R3, clearly the biggest and best choice by a significant margin. *Corner Exit Speed Corner exit speed is the speed at which a car is traveling at the track-out point of a corner and, consequently, the speed carried onto the following straight. A higher corner exit speed is critical to the time you can gain when accelerating down a straightaway. A higher exit speed equals a higher straightaway speed, which equals a shorter lap time! The maximum speed you can carry through a corner is determined by the tires' traction and the line you drive through the corner. (Remember that the tires are only capable of 100% traction. Devoting all your traction to turning will leave you with no traction for braking or accelerating.) At first, it would seem that the most efficient way through a turn would be to maintain the maximum speed that will allow the tires to maintain cornering traction. You could then start accelerating at the end of the turn. Whereas this will produce fast lap times, it is possible to go even faster. Here's how: by entering the turn a few miles per hour slower, you will be able to devote a small amount of your traction to acceleration before you have exited the turn. This slightly earlier return to the the accelerator will give you a longer period of acceleration, and in turn result in a faster overall speed at the end of the straight. _____________________________________________________________________________ | iX28M 0SSBr | | ;MMMMMMM@ MMMMM CORNER EXIT SPEED | | MMMM: MMM GUIDE | |XMB :2 M@M | |BM MMMM,MM2 | | M MMM MMM | | BM | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | || | 157MPH | || | 155MPH | | `\/\/\/\' | `\/\/\/\' | | | | | |\/\/\/\| +100MPH | |\/\/\/\| +100MPH | | || | | || | | | || | | || | | | || | * - Start to accelerate | || | | | || | Avg. We| :: .:' /\ | call this phase of driving racecars "breaking and| :: ,' 57MPH | entering." | :: ,' | | :: / ,--------------- | Remembering that a tire is only capable of 100% | :: /,' | traction, it makes sense to do the majority of | |53MPH/ |<-Acceleration | your braking in a straight line. This will get | | |' |\ Point | the maximum efficiency from the brakes. As you | | | | `, | rapidly approach a turn, you should be holding | | |' | | | the brake pedal at it's threshold - or braking at| | | | | | 100%. This means that if you brake at 101%, the | | |' | | 6.36 seconds| tire will lock up and skid. Skidding is not good | | | | :>-Threshold | because you surrender control of the tires' | ||' | | braking, with| traction and increases the overall distance to | |X | | braking and | stop. | |X | | turning | | |X 157 | | | As the car approaches the entrance of the turn, | |X MPH | ,' | if you want to continue to brake into a turn, you| |X |/ | must relieve some of the braking grip so as to | |X | | gain the ability to turn the car - remember the | ||+100 MPH | traction compromise? This is generally the most |____________________________| efficient way to enter the turn. It also smoothes out the transitions from braking to cornering to once again applying the throttle. *S-Turns or "Compromise Corners" _________________________________ So far, we've been looking at each corner as| | || | if were the only turn on the course. You | | || | can't afford to make this assumption. In | | || | fact, not all corners are created equal. A | | || | particular corner's placement on the course,| | :| | where it leads to, and what precedes it, may| / ,' | | also affect the line you choose to drive | ; : | | through the corner. | ,; ,' ; | | ,' ,: ,:: | Taking into account all these different | ,... ,;' ,:' ,' | variables, you need to decide which one of | ;' ŻŻŻŻŻ :' ,' | these corners will gain you the greatest | .' ,.:' ,' | advantage on lap time. We know that exit | ; ,....:' ,:' | speed is of paramount importance, so if you | : .;' ,:'' | commit to the first turn, your car might not| | ,' ,:'ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ | be positioned to take advantage of the | |: | | second turn. It is very important to base | || | | your strategy on how you can exit the turn |_________________________________| leading onto the straight with maximum speed. Often, this means you will have to sacrifice, or "compromise," the proper line of the first turn to be able to take full advantage of the second turn and exit onto the straight at the highest possible speed. *Passing Passing may seem like nothing more than just putting your foot down and steering around the car ahead of you, but it's not that simple. The uniformed observer misses the point that on the racetrack, everyone has their foot to the floor. The common method of passing is to out-brake your competition into a corner. By going "deeper" into a turn, you can gain a lead over your competitor, but remember that this will change "The Line" the your car travels. You will now be on a different radius and you will need to adjust your driving to stay on the road. If you brake too late, you will need to remain on the brakes longer to still remain in control. This can often lead to the competitor passing you back on the exit of the turn, or your car leaving the course. When your competition comes back and passes you right after you passed them, it is called "The Double Pass." ,;X2aBM .ZXXSSBr iMMMMMM@WWMi MBZZZ0M SMMMWMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMS MMMMMMMB7:. @MMMMaSXXX7Z MMMM@ :M0BM----------------\ ,MMM .rra2 M0aWM [GT4.03] \ ZMM MMMMM iMaZM-------------------\---------------------------------------- SM0 MW0MM M8a@8 3. - Track Walkthroughs MM MMMMM MMMMM------------------------------------------------------------- MM MM *PLEASE NOTE - These all describe what to do with faster newer cars with good handling (most are done with the recent Chevrolet Corvette.) So please adjust the walkthrough to fit your car such as don't brake as early or something when driving a slower car, or brake earlier when driving a car of the same speed but with worse handling. -------------------------------------------------- 3.1 - City Courses [GT4.31] -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Citta di Aria ------------------------------ You could just gas it all the way through the part of the track with the buildings on each side. When you see a tighter turn to the right, that is when you want to brake. Try to get on the right side of the track quickly so you could make the next turn quicker. Brake to about 35-40 mph for the next turn. Gas it through the next turn and brake to about 60 mph for the next slight turn. You will need to keep an eye on the other cars because once he starts braking hard, you will have to brake to about 30 mph to make the turn. Gas it through the next few turns where you see that the other cars didn't press the brakes. Be careful because around one of the last corners that you could gas it through, is a narrow spot in the track where you will have to get through the middle. Now just gas it down this straight and you will enter tht series of narrow turns that you did in a previous test. You will want to take them on in the same fashion. Tap the brakes through the first few turns and brake to about 30 mph at the sharper turns at the end of this series of turns. Get in the other cars' draft and you could actually get a lot of speed here. Pay attention to where he starts to brake so you don't slam into his back end and fail. Brake to about 45 mph to complete this S turn. You will need to brake to about 35-30 mph for this next hairpin turn. Now just gas it through a series of light turns. There will eventually be one sharp turn right before the finish line where you will have to brake to about 40 mph to get through. Now just gas it to the finish. ------------------------------ Clubman Stage Route 5 ------------------------------ Now gas it down the straight-away. Brake to about 80-85 mph at the entrance of the tunnel. Gas it through and let go of the accelerator through the next light right turn. Brake to about 50 mph for the next turn and you will enter the only series of turns. Gas it through the next turn and let go of the accelerator for the following turn. Now you could gas it down the rest of the turns. Make this first turn at about 80 mph and then brake to about 60 mph for the next turn. ------------------------------ Costa di Amafi ------------------------------ Go forward and start following the other cars. Go through the first turn to the left without letting go of the accelerator. Brake down to about 25-30 mph for this next turn. Watch how the other cars brake. They will brake, let go of the accelerator, and brake a little more. Do that to save the most time. Now brake down to about 48 mph here and let go of the accelerator through the rest of the turn. Now go straight down this stretch. Brake down to about 30 mph for the next turn. Go down this line and make the windy turns as fast as you can. Brake down to about 38 mph and let go of the accelerator through the rest of the next turn. Brake down to about 45 mph for this turn. You will only need to let go of the accelerator through these turns and you will reach a sharper turn. Brake down to about 45 mph for this turn. Now just floor it down the hill. Brake down to about 30 mph at the bottom of the hill, start braking right when the road gets relatively flat again, you could also watch where the other cars begins to turn. Let go of the accelerator if you start sliding up the track and gas it through the exit. Let go of the accelerator for the next turn to the right. Let go of it again for the next turn to the left. Let go a little early though. Now go through this straight and brake down to 25 mph for the next turn. This part is kind of hard and involves a lot of braking. Brake to about 15-20 mph and go down. Now brake to about 10 mph. Now just gas it to the finish line. ------------------------------ Cote d'Azur ------------------------------ Brake early at the first turn and brake to about 50 mph. Accelerate through the exit of the turn and gas it up this uphill climb. At the very top, start braking, brake to about 45-50 mph and make sure not to slide or it will mess you up at the entrance to the next turn. Tap the brakes before entering it and slide through the turn. Go down this short straight and you will enter this series of turns. Brake to about 35-40 mph while entering the turn and let go of the accelerator through the turn. Gas it to the next turn once you complete it. Brake to about 25 mph at the entrance to the next turn and let go of the accelerator throughout the turn. Now gas it to the next turn where you will only have to let go of the accelerator. Tap the brakes at the entrance to the following turn and slide through this turn too. Now you will go through the long tunnel, near the end your car may start to slide so make sure to let go of the accelerator when it does. Keep going until you reach the sharp S turn. Brake to about 35 mph. Let go of the accelerator and complete this quick series of turns, once you are certain you are out, press the accelerator again. Gas it ahead and you will reach the next series of turns. Brake to about 50-55 mph entering this turn and slide through it. Slide through the next two turns and you will reach a sharper right turn, brake to about 40 mph at this turn and let go of the accelerator through the next turn. Now stay on the right hand side of the track. Make this light left without slowing down and slam the brakes through the hairpin turn, you'll have to brake to about 30 mph and let go of the accelerator around the turn. Gas it through the exit and you will reach the last turn of the track. Tap the brakes and then slide through it. Now just gas it to the start/finish line. ------------------------------ George V Paris ------------------------------ Gas it down this straight and brake down to 40 mph. Gas it around this long turn and tap the brakes exiting the turn. Brake to about 35 mph at the next turn. Gas it here and let go of the accelerator for the next turn. Brake to about 40 mph for the next turn and then 50 mph for the next turn. Now you will have to keep braking from about 30-40 mph between the rest of the turns. ------------------------------ Hong Kong ------------------------------ Get a good start and you could slide around this turn. Don't hold the turn all the way, hold it about halfway (that means instead of moving the analog stick all of the way to the right, hold it about halfway to the right) because that will help you keep the most traction. Brake for a second a few times so you won't slide into the wall and continue down this stretch. Brake to about 60-65 mph for this next turn. You could make it at a faster speed if you are good but your car will begin to spin so get ready to try to correct it. Brake to about 55 mph for this next turn. Now you could go down this windy section in a straight line. Go in the straight line or you will lose too much time. Now brake to about 35 mph for this next tight turn. Now go down this short straight and brake to about 45 mph. Let go of the accelerator through the turn and gas it through the exit. Now you've got a nice long stretch to go down and gain speed. To gain the most speed, get directly behind the other cars to get a draft which will make you go faster. Brake really early for this turn. Brake where the other cars started to brake. You will need to go at about 25-30 mph through this turn. Now brake to about 45 mph for this next turn and let go of the accelerator a little so you don't slide into the wall. Now get in the draft again behind the other cars and brake to about 40 mph for this turn. Once again, get in the other cars' draft and brake to about 45 mph for this turn. Brake to about 33 mph for this next turn and go through the next at 35 mph. Now just gas it to the finish line. ------------------------------ New York ------------------------------ Gas it down this long straight-away and don't start braking until you reach the hairpin turn. When you're there, brake to about 55-60 mph. Slide through the first have and then brake to about 35-40 mph for the second half of this turn. Gas it down this nice long straight-away. Now all of these 90 degree turns could be made at around 50 mph. Gas it down the final straight and you will reach a long turn. Take this whole turn at about 60 mph. Now get a good corner exit speed and gas it to the finish. ------------------------------ Opera Paris ------------------------------ Make all of these turns by just without even letting go of the accelerator as you make the turn. Gain some speed down this straight. Brake down to about 55 mph to make this next turn and gas it through the exit. Brake to about 50 mph while entering the next turn. You could just make the rest of the turns by letting go of the accelerator for this series of turns. Go down this stretch and build up speed. Brake to about 55-60 mph entering the next turn and go through it while letting go of the accelerator. Press the gas again when ready. Brake to about 30 mph to make this hairpin turn. You could make this turn by simply letting go of the accelerator. Build up speed here and let go of the accelerator early. Make the turn by just letting go of the accelerator. Brake down to about 35 mph here and then brake to 30 mph at the next turn. Make sure not to enter the pits and brake to about 38 mph. You could make the rest of the turns by letting go of the accelerator. ------------------------------ Seattle Circuit ------------------------------ You will have to brake really early at the first turn because this car doesn't have good braking. Get down to about 40 mph and gas it through the exit. Go down this short straight and brake to 70 mph for this turn. Now go forward and go through this light turn to the left at full speed. Brake down to about 55 mph at the very top of this hill to make this turn. You could go through this light turn to the left at full speed. Brake to about 65 mph for the next turn. You could slide through this next turn by letting go of the accelerator. You could also slide through the next two turns doing the same thing. Now you will reach the sharp turn here, brake to about 45 mph to make this turn and gas it through the exit. Now you have the nice long stretch to gain speed down. You could make the first right without letting go of the accelerator. You will soon reach a much sharper right, brake to about 65 mph to make it. Now you will reach a small series of turns. Brake just for a second at the entrance of the first turn. You could slide through the turn right after that one. Now you have a short straight. Try to position yourself to go through the next two turns in a straight line. Let go of the accelerator through the next turn and you could gas it through the next turn here. Now you will reach another sharp turn, brake to about 45 mph to make it. Now there's one more turn that's a bit of a hassle. Brake to about 75 mph when making it and go through the small S turn. Now just gas it to the finish. ------------------------------ Seoul Central ------------------------------ Gas it down this straight and you will reach the hairpin turn. Brake to about 50 mph while entering the turn. You will have to make the rest of the turn at an average of 45 mph. Now go down this short straight and brake to about 70 mph as you enter this turn. Gas through the exit and just let go of the accelerator through the next turn. Now go down this straight and brake to about 45 mph. Gas through the exit and you will reach the last turn. Gas through it, it might look like a tight turn but the track is very wide so you could gas through it without a problem. ------------------------------ Special Stage Route 5 ------------------------------ Brake down to about 135 mph for this first light turn. Now brake down to about 85 mph here and try to make the turn at an average of 85 mph. Be careful at the end because it will cut in so you will have to go slower there. Brake to about 75 mph at the next turn. Brake to about 55-60 mph at this next turn. Now for these next three turns, you could just let go of your accelerator to make. Brake to about 75 mph for the next turn. For the second half of that S turn. Just let go of the accelerator for a second and gas out of the exit. Now you will reach a hairpin turn, brake to about 45 mp to complete it. Accelerate and go through the next turn without even letting go of the gas. Now get to the next turn and brake to about 65 mph while making the turn. Brake down to about 75-80 at the entrance of this next turn. Let go of your accelerator through the rest of this short series of turns and brake to about 55 mph at the last turn here. Now brake down to about 65 mph and go through the next turn, let go of the accelerator if you slide too much and gas it to the finish. ------------------------------ Tokyo Route 246 ------------------------------ Gas it down this stretch and brake to about 60 mph for the first turn. You will soon reach an S turn. Brake to about 70 mph at the first turn and you could gas it through the second turn. Brake down to about 105 mph at this turn and make the whole long turn at about 115 mph. Let go of the accelerator if you start to slide or go too high above 115 mph. Brake to about 90-95 mph at the next turn and gas it through the whole thing, let go of the accelerator when you start to slide. Now gas it and you will reach a light S turn. You could gas it through the first turn, just tap the brakes to get through the second turn. Gas it through the first light right turn and brake to about 80 mph on the tight right turn. Go through the next right turn by just letting go of the accelerator. Make the next two turns without letting go of the accelerator. You will then reach a left turn where you will have to brake to about 110 mph to make. Brake to 65 mph at the next turn and gas it to the finish. -------------------------------------------------- 3.2 - World Circuits [GT4.32] -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Circuit de la Sarthe ------------------------------ Make the first right without letting go of the accelerator. Make the next right by braking down to 85-90 mph. Make the rest of the turns by simply letting go of the accelerator. Now gas through the turns after that series of turns and you will reach an area with a lot of sand. Gas through the first few turns and you will see a sharp left. Brake to about 75 mph at that turn. Now keep going and there will be one more sharp turn. Brake to 110 mph to make it. Now you will reach a nice long straightaway. Floor it down here and just keep building up speed. You wil eventually reach a section of the road that will turn to the right. Brake to 70 mph there and brake to 65 at the next turn going to the left. Gas it through the last turn and keep gassing it down this straightaway. Brake to 75 mph at the next section that will turn off to the side and tap the brakes when you turn to the right. Gas it through the last turn and gas it down the rest of the straightaway. Brake to about 50 mph when you reach the sharp right turn. Gas it down this long stretch and you will reach a light right turn. Gas it through without even letting go of the accelerator. You could gas it through the next light right turn and you will reach a sharper turn. Brake to about 135 mph there. Gas it down this short road and brake to about 55 mph while making the turn to the left. Now you've got another short stretch. Brake to about 45 mph at that turn. Gas it through this long area of light turns. You will reach a right turn that will enter as a light turn but get much sharper. Tap the brakes at the entrance and brake to 95 mph once you reach the sharper section of the turn. Tap the brakes or let go of the accelerator through the enxt turns. You will have to brake again once you see the pit lane to the right. Brake to about 75 mph. Let go of the accelerator through the second half of this S turn. Brake to about 50 mph at the next turn and go through the last turn by letting go of the gas. Now gas it to the finish. ------------------------------ Circuit de la Sarthe II ------------------------------ Gas it down this stretch and gas it around the first light right turn. You will see the Dunlop overhead in the distance. Cut through the sand and aim towards the left half of the sign. It will slow you down a bit but it will save you time to cut through the sand. Gas it through the light left and light right turns. Now you will reach a sharper left turn that you will actually have to brake fairly hard for. Brake down to about 85 mph here and gas it through the exit. Now just tap the brakes while entering the next turn. Brake to about 105 mph a little before the turn and gas it through the exit for the best corner exit speed possible. Now gas it down this nice long straightaway. When you are approaching the sharp turn at the end of this straight, brake to about 55 mph. Now gas it again and you could gas it through the first two light right turns. The next turn will be a little sharper, brake to about 165-170 mph here. Now you will reach the first sharp turn of this series of turns, brake to about 65 mph. Now gas it to the next sharp turn where you will have to brake to about 45-50 mph. Now you could gas it through the next light left turn. |
