The written portion of this section is Copyright 2004 Working Designs. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Warriors of Merit (Arc01) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o The peace we now all enjoy was defended in the most recent war by Rolandia's Knights working with a Growsian firl named Louise, a mercenary named Wallace, a swordsman named Xenos, and a young scholar named Ariost. They were supported by King Eliotte and Lord Douglas of Burnstein. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | The Continent (Arc02) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o The neighbors to our Sovereign Kingdom of Burnstein are Rolandia to the west and Ranzack to the south. The Magic Academy located between Burnstein and Rolandia was jointly developed to research, regulate, and control magic technology...to the benefit of both kingdoms. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | The Status Screen (Arc03) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o o---------------------------------------------------o | Name | | Class | o------------------------------o--------------------o Portrait | Condition | Next Exp | | | Wealth | o------------------------------o--------------------o | Resistance MHP ATK | | MMP DEF | | STR MOV | | INT HIT | | DEX ATW | o----------------------o o---------------------------------------------------o | First Name | | Armor | o----------------------o | Ring | | Lv | | Gem | | HP | | Gem | | MP | | Gem | o----------------------o o---------------------------------------------------o Portrait - A picture of the character Name - The full name of the character Class - The job class of the character Condition - What status ailments you are suffering from Next Exp - Is the amount of experience necessary to increase the Lv. Wealth - How much money you have (in Elm) Resistance - Represent character's resistance to each magic attribute. MHP - Maximum HP MMP - Maximum MP STR - Is the physical power behind a character's attack. INT - Affects the power of magic attacks. DEX - Is the dexterity or quickness of a character performing actions. ATK - Represents a character's attack power. DEF - Represents a character's defensive power. MOV - Represents a character's point to point movement speed. HIT - Represents a character's hit ratio. ATW - Represents a character's attack wait. Armor - Represent's which armor is currently equipped. Ring - Represent's which ring is currently equipped. Gem - Represents which gems are currently equipped. First Name - First name of character Lv - Is a character's experience level HP - Represents the character's hit points, or life force. MP - Represents a character's magic point, or magic force. By gaining experience and increasing levels, a character grows stronger and more skilled. Experience can be gained by defeating enemies or using magic, with a few exceptions. When leveling up, only the STR, INT, and DEX stats are increased. The amount of increase varies by character. STR directly affects ATK, DEF, and HP. Each armor has a minumum STR value. Equipping with insufficient strength will cause movement or evasion panelties. While INT directly affcts MP, DEX influences movement ability, Aria length, evasion and hit probability. Each time a character receives damage, their HP is reduced. If it reaches zero, they are defeated. HP can be recovered in battle by using magic, skills, or equipped items. After battles, HP is recovered automatically. MP is decreased every time a magic is cast. The amount depends on the spell and character. When MP is empty, no more spells can be cast. MP can be recovered with skills and equipped items. Staying at an Inn will also recover MP. ATK us the main factor in how much damage one character will inflict on another. It's affected by the character's STR and Lv. DEF relates to how much damage is decreased from an enemy attack. This is affected by the character's STR and equipped armor. MOV is affected by the character's DEX. HIT is the numeric representation of how well a character will strike enemies. This is influenced by the character's DEX value. ATW affects the delay after an attack before another command may be executed. A lower number means less delay. This stat can be lowered by various means, including equipping certain items. ATK and DEF are important for fighters. If a fighter's ATW is high, the number of attacks is decreased. If MOV is low, it will take longer to reach enemies before engaging them. For magic users, INT and DEX are important. Magic users rely on MP to battle effectively. They are less valuable if their MP runs out in battle. For resistance, there are 8 values, 0 (critical) through 6 (no effect) and absorbtion. The standard value for magic resistance is 2. When there are many enemies, it is a good idea to increase ME beforehand by equipping an item. Equip armor to raise DEF. Each armor has a minumum STR value. Equipping with insufficient strength will cause movement or evasion penalties. There are different types of rings to be aware of when choosing which to equip. They are: A Unknown, B Fighter's, and C Gran. Types A and B increase rank, while type C increases parameters. Judge which ring will be most useful for a specific character by studying the parameter window as each ring is highlighted. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Rings (Arc04) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o o------------------o | First Name | o------------------o--------------------------------o | Armor 3-2-1 | | Ring | | Gem | | Gem | | Gem | o---------------------------------------------------o | Resistance MHP ATK | | MMP DEF | | STR MOV | | INT HIT | | DEX ATW | o-----------------------o-------------o-------------o | | MHP | ATK | | Ring Portrait | MMP | DEF | | | STR | MOV | | | INT | HIT | | Value | DEX | ATW | o-----------------------o-------------o-------------o First Name - First name of character Armor - Represent's which armor is currently equipped. UpperSTATS - Represent characters max stat values LowerSTATS - Represent changes to the character's stats from equipped ring Value - Sale value of current ring (in Elm) Ring Weapons are said to have been popular in ancient times. They transform from rings into weapons by reacting to the inner fighting ability of the one who wears it. The form the weapon takes is determined by the Ring Master's ability. Attaching special power gems to the ring adds special effects and powers not present in regular weapons. Ring Weapons have been collected and spread across the world by Ring Merchants. Special knowledge is required to change the ring's attributes, and shops specializing in this will be opening kingdomwide soon. Adding a Gem to the hollow areas of a Ring Weapon will assign a special ability or effect to that weapon. Each Gem holds a specific power level. The amount within each Gem is shown by a level number preceding each name. A Ring Weapon has two effects. - Changing Abilities - Controlling Gem Power You can judge the effects of a particular ring by its name once you get used to the system. The parameters next to the ring will provide guidance for the less-skilled however. Occasionally, when there is bloodshed, a new Ring Weapon will emerge. Therefore, battling is an easy way for a Ring Master to obtain new, more powerful rings. Of course, to obtain the strongest rings involves an element of certain danger to the Ring Master in battle. The stronger the opponent slain, the stronger the ring that may emerge. However, the risk of death to the Ring Master also increases proportionally. Rings are useful for fighters, because STR will also affect ATK and DEF stats. Advanced fighters must balance not only stat increases, but also control value concerns. Rings with control power of 0 are useless for attaching Gems, so should only be kept if they give a significant stat increase. Since only 50 rings can be kept at a time, it is therefore prudent to sell rings that are less powerful than those currently equipped as soon as possible. Unlike rings, you should keep as many Gems on hand as possible because each may affect rings yet to be obtained in interesting and useful ways. There is no way of knowing what the effects will be until the Gems are matched to specific rings, so it is useful to have as many Gems as possible on hand at all times. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Featherian (Arc05) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o The Featherian tribe led the way in our journey across the space-time continuum to this blessed new world. They do not command magic, but rather are skilled in the ways of science. The Control Tower that bridges the space- time continuum was a result of their efforts. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Growsians (Arc06) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o In this world, there is no evidence of Grow elements. Since Grow is the source of our magic power, immense magics that were cast routinely in the old world cannot be summoned here. Growsians can still make limited use of their abilities here by tapping the tiny amounts of Grow that leak through the crack created by the bridge in the space-time continuum. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Era of Growsian Rule (Arc07) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Because the Growsians channeled power greater than the inhabitants of this world possessed, they ruled vast areas for generations. However, without warning, these rulers vanished suddenly one day. The ruins of their great kingdoms still exist even now. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Military Structure (Arc08) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Burnstein Army is organized as follows: Squadrons of 5, Platoons of 10, Companies of 5 Platoons, Battalions of 5 Companies, and Regiments of 5 Battalions. Each General commands 3 Regiments normally, but in battle the power structure is flexible out of necessity. O============================================================================O | Characters (Chara) | O============================================================================O Character descriptions can also be found very close by in the instruction manual, unless of course you rented the game and didn't get one, in which case the following may benefit you. ----- Wein Cruz -o "Since he was a young boy adventuring with his father, Wein admired the skill and stature of the imperial knights. Knowing that just one knight had the ability of 100 soldiers and the admiration of an entire kingdom made them an irresistable fascination." "One day, Wein imagined he, too, would become an Imperial Knight, serving the king and providing inspiration for others. Turning that dream into a reality will prove more treacherous than he ever imagined." ----- Maximillian Schneider -o "Still mourning for the father that was lost to him in the last great war, Maximillian enrolls in the academy to fufill his father's last wish. His understandable distaste for war in all its forms is in strong contrast to the Academy teachings, and so he intends to graduate to a life of politics rather than a military career." "Unfortunately, life is about to throw him another curve ball..." ----- Hans Bearnt -o "There is a nagging sense of urgency to everything Hans does. Perhaps it is his nature, or perhaps it is related to being an orphan, alone in a world torn by war. Though his childlike "enthusiasm" can become wearisome at times, no one can deny that he puts his all into whatever assignment he is given." "When he joins Wein after crossing paths in a chance encounter, his life will be changed forever. The burden of deciding whether that path will lead to good or evil is left to you." ----- Charlone Claudius -o "Born to a life of wealth and privilege, but longing for more adventure than her assigned place in society allows, Charlone Claudius enrolls in the Academy with the intention of one day becoming an Imperial Knight." "Unfortunately, before her intended journey even begins, it is derailed into a plot of deception, murder, and intrugue that will force her to quickly become the knight she desperately wants to be... or just another overreaching casualty of misguided ambition." ----- Sereb -o "Arieta and Sereb are seemingly inseparable. He is of the Silver Fox Tribe and a descendant of the old world tribe." "He is extremely protective of his friend, and will not allow any harm to come to her while he is at her side. Because of his lineage, he has learned to communicate in human tongue if he so chooses." ----- Wolfgang -o "His face scarred during a conflict shrouded in mystery, Wolfgang has become one of the best-known mercenaries in the three kingdoms. His skill and ambition have pushed him to the top of the heap in cheap, mobile killers-for- hire." ----- Carmaine Fallsmyer -o "This is the one person who can fully understand what Wein will experience as he grapples with his destiny, because Carmaine was also thrust into a position of power and responsibility unexpectedly and at a rather young age was forced into maturity." "His help can prove to be invaluable to Wein... if the correct path is chosen." ----- Arieta Lyuis -o "Her sweet appearance and soft voice are seemingly at odds with her tough determination and battle-hardened skills. The mystery of her past only deepens when Wein finds her again after ten years have passed, yet her appearance is unchanged." "At times, it seems as if there are two arietas -- one kind and compassionate, and the other harsh and demanding." "Finding her true self and a happy ending will not be easy." ----- Xenos Langley -o "Strong and decisive, Xenos has a history as both a Mercenary and servant of the King. Despite his dark past, or perhaps because of it, he has become Champion of the Arena near Grandshill, raising his profile in both Rolandia and Burnstein Kingdoms." "At the height of his popularity, he decided to retire from the Arena a Champion, rather than continue to defend the title. This puzzling choice only hints at the painful secrets this complicated warrior shelters." ----- Riviera Marius -o "A shroud of mystery clouds the past of this woman. Xenos knows more than he is telling, but that is the only thing that is certain when it comes to Riviera." "Her skills are impressive... far beyond what a woman protecting a remote village should be able to master. Only time will tell what her true mission is..." ----- Ernest Lyell -o "This mysterious outsider has a story that many in the kingdom could never guess." "His support of an imposter vying for succession of the King of Burstein should have resulted in immediate execution, but mercy was shown and he was sent into exile instead." "He can help Wein... if he can be found." ----- Brett Varner -o "Brett's role in this story is quite minor, he is extra help in a tough situation. However, his connections to the overall story arc become apparent when the Side Game "Sandra's Quest" is unlocked and played. This game provides backstory and connects some of the events of Growlanser I to Growlanser II." "But enough of that. The exam is about to begin. Do you know the rules?" - Yes - No "We've only just met, but I wonder if I might ask you a few questions... Is that alright?" - Yes - No "Do you need battle advice?" - Yes - No If you select yes there's a scene in which Maximillian teaches you the basics of the combat system. You have two primary options, attack (ATK) or move (MOV) in the command window. They can be used obviously to attack and move your position. More detail will be used later. ~* Officer Field Exam *~ Completion Conditions: Game Over Conditions: - All enemies destroyed - None The battle begins, there are a total of eight people on the field and six of them are your enemies. Current options available to Wein are ATK, DEF, MOV, and EQP. Use the attack command to choose one of the six targets to attack. Maximillian has all the same options available plus the MAG command. If at any point either of your characters become hurt Max can cast cure magic and select a target to be healed. For now it is best to choose ATK, attack the same character with Max as you did with Wein to keep them together. ThHe same tactic applies to the rest of the battle, you should have no problem winning with simple ATK commands and the occasional heal. Also don't forget that at any time if you wish to cancel a command you already made, simply hit square and your menu will appear at the end of the next turn. It is a good idea to learn early there are three type of battle-end contingencies, Mission Failed, Mission Clear and Mission Complete. Getting all Mission Complete ratings will open up a special choice for you later in the game and while this practice battle does not count towards this event it is still possible to get a Mission Compelte here, you must kill all six enemies with Max and Wein, they cannot kill each other. To do this allow the mage who is fighting to damage the enemies and use Max to finish them off with his magic. After a couple of rounds kill the mage in one hit with Max's magic and then finish the enemies manually with normal attacks. Always target the enemies who have the least amount of HP and are just about to be killed by a different opponent, it is very possible to do. ~* End of Battle *~ -----------------------------------\ Burnstein Military Command Center |---------------------------------(Fw003)-o -----------------------------------/ Just a scene to watch here. "Ah, yes. Your dream of becoming an Imperial Knight, right?" - Yes, it's been my goal for so long! - That is only the beginning - Yes, but what about you, Max? "Commander..." - I would like to postpone the final exam - Why not just give us a passing grade now? - I know these are diffucult times... Soon after you'll find yourself on the world map. The X button selects a destination to move to. Press circle to unlock your cursor and move freely between areas, also press L1 or R1 to quickly move to the next available area.
