Lost.... again

I just got STHL today, and I was so excited!! I am brand new to the game.... and all I seem to do, is wander around, LOST. The book is not very thorough. Do I need to work part time like, for a month? I have no $$$... no horse, no dog, no cow.... I have the garden planted. How do you guys find your way around? The map is next to useless it seems to me. Help Please, I need some encouragement... I think I would LOVE this game, if I weren't lost all the time!
