CHARACTERS ============================================================================= ============================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- LANG | Age 17 | Weapon: Sword Raised by the captain of Nohl's Vigilance Corps, Lang was trained from an early age in the ways of the sword. He's a brave youth with a strong sense of justice, but he sometimes speaks his mind too freely and gets himself into trouble. He was born with an oddly-shaped birthmark on his chest. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAYA | Age 14 | Weapon: Magic Raised in the snow covered, northern village of Yuno, Maya has the ability to use the type of magic called 'Secrets of Kabel'. One day, however, she had a terrible accident with that power. Ever since that incident, she's been in a state of shock, unable to speak. Nevertheless, she's certainly not timid - a girl full of curiosity. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- KAZAN | Age 60 | Weapon: Martial Arts An old swordsman once renowned for his expertise in the Tenga-Ryu (Sky Fang) school of swordsmanship. But now he has thrown aside the sword, relying only on fists. He's a little rought spoken, self-indulgent, and sloppy, but has a vast knowledge not only of martial arts, but also of history. The wise man of the party (and many other, as you'll find out thru the game). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SHARON | Age 20 | Weapon: Saber A swordswoman who holds a deep reverence for her departed father. Cheerful and straightforward, she has a frank, big-sister bossiness to her. Her goal is to be world-famous someday. She practically forced her way into Lang's party. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AYNE | Age 23 | Weapon: Hammer A warrior from a race of giants, Ayne is from a southern island called 'Hill of Giants, Jinga'. These giants lived without contact with the outside world until a certain event caused Ayne to join up with Lang and his party. He looks menacing, but he's actually quite steady and intelligent. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ============================================================================= ============================================================================= 7. MENU SCREEN ============================================================================= ============================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO ACCESS AND UNDERSTAND MENU SCREEN ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To access - Press Circle when on a field screen or dungeon map. To understand what each part of menu screen is for, I'll chop it up in five parts: a) in upper left menu screen commands are displayed b) top of the screen is for help messages c) most of the right half is dedicated to status overviews for each chr d) bottom left corner you can see party's current cash e) on the bottom you see explanatary messages (item info etc.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ITEMS COMMAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This lets you examine, use or rearrange items you've acquired so far. 1. A bit below the top line you'll see five icons, followed by coin symbol. Five icons represent Item display modes. a) ALL icon displays all items in inventory b) Potion icon displays only usable items of restorative nature c) Pointing hand icon displays all other usable items d) Sword icon displays items that can be equipped e) Diamond icon displays all other uncategorized items f) Coin symbol represents how many accessories you're holding - you can have a max of 200 accessories 2. Most of the middle of the screen is reserved for items, that is their names and quantity held. Use L1/R1 buttons to scroll thru the list quickly. You can hold a maximum of 99 units of particular item. 3. At the bottom you can view item's info and its effects. 4. Pressing Square will let you sort items in order acquired, name, type, or you can switch them around manually ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGIN COMMAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lets you view origin's status or use origin abilities. 1. Middle top right displays status of the origin currently displayed (only EXP and LV, tho'). R2/L2 switches between origins available. 2. Middle bottom right displays chr that hosts that origin. 3. Middle left displays abilities origin has learned (new abilities become available as origin levels up). Abilities that can be used outside of battle are shown in white text. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- EQUIP COMMAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lets you check or change chr's equipped items. 1. Middle right is reserved for current chr's status. Here you'll also find weight gauge, which is explained below in point 4 of this section. 2. Middle top left is reserved for items chr has equipped. Number on the right is that item's weight. Use L1/R1 buttons to scroll thru the list quickly. 3. Bottom left is for other items that can be equipped. Number on the right is that item's weight. 4. I'll now explain WS (Weight System). Each equippable item has weight value. Each chr can equip items of total weight up to that chr's max weight. Max weight value rises (up to the total max of 100) as chr levels up. The better the performance of an item, the more it will weigh. You could, for example, choose to equip a high-performance weapon and armor, or you could opt for a variety of light accessories instead. 5. I'll now explain how to equip items. First you select the category of item you want to equip. You may only equip one weapon and one piece of armor for each part of body, but you may equip as many acc as you like (up to that chr's max weight, of course). Select the item you want to equip from the list and enter your selection. Changes in chr's status are displayed to the right. To remove acc, move the cursor to that item and press Square. YOU CANNOT REMOVE WEAPONS OR ANY TYPE OF ARMORS, ONLY ACCESSORIES! When you equip acc, its associated skill/s are displayed. Moving the cursor to any equippable item and pressing Circle displays info about that item's effect. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- STATUS COMMAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lets you view chrs' statuses. 1. Most of the right half is reserved for chr's current status. Use L2/R2 buttons to switch between available chrs. STATISTIC REPRESENTS? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- HP | Chr's hit points. Number on the right is MAX HP, number on the | left is current HP. If it drops to zero, chr becomes downed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- MP | Chr's magic points. Number on the right is MAX MP, number on | the left is current MP. If it drops to zero, chr can't use | origin's abilities. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AP | Chr's art points. Number on the right is MAX AP, number on the | left is current AP. If it drops to zero, chr can't use Super, | Hyper, Variable and Mystic Arts (explained later). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- LV | Chr's current level. On the left half of the screen you can scroll thru six different mini-status screens with left/right directionals. Use L1/R1 buttons to scroll thru the lists. a) Origin mini-status screen displays origin's current LV and EXP acquired. b) Arts mini-status screen displays all the arts chr has learned so far. c) Equip mini-status screen displays items chr is equipped with. d) Nicknames mini-status screen displays all nicknames chr has acquired so far. e) Skills mini-status screen displays skills chr is equipped with (green), and skills that have been learned and can be used (white). Greyed skills are skills that haven't been learned yet or cannot be used. f) Cooking mini-status screen displays all recipes chr has learned so far. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SKILLS COMMAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lets you equip offence and defence skills. 1. Some skills, called Offence Skills and Defence Skills, must first be equipped with the SKILLS command before they become effective in battle. Offence skills activate when attacking the enemy with normal attacks. Defence skills activate when using Guard command during battle. Use L2/R2 buttons to switch between available chrs. 2. ONLY ONE OFFENCE AND DEFENCE SKILL CAN BE EQUIPPED AT A TIME. Select and enter the desired skill. Select the skill you want to equipe from the list below and press X. Skills that can be equipped are shown in bright text. Darkened skills are ones you're still learning. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONFIG COMMAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lets you toy around with various game settings. FIELD SCREEN ============================================================================= ============================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORLD MAP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. World map shows towns, dungeons and other locations around the continent. Pressing Circle brings up World map menu (WMM) with five choices: a) Move (explained bit below) b) Camp (explained bit below) c) Status (check section 7) d) Save (check section 7) e) Load (check section 7) 2. Select desired destination by using directionals, then enter your selection. Yellow triangles indicate the directions in which destinations are located. You must clear certain event first or obtain some means of transport. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIELD MAP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. When you enter town or village, world map changes to field map. Move chr with directionals or left stick. Talk to other NPC-s by standing near them or in front of them and press X to start the convo. Open building doors by moving directionals or left stick on the direction that the door opens. 2. There are some places, such as roofs or walls, where chr jumps automatically when moving in that direction (same holds true for dungeon maps). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- DUNGEON MAP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Those are maps in which enemies appear. Move chr with directionals or left stick. Switch between playable chrs with R2/L2. Use the same procedure with switches and the like. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGIN ACTIONS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Dungeons are filled with many traps and obstacles that hinder the progress. You can clear these obstacles by using origin actions - press Square to perform such an action. CHR'S ORIGIN WHAT IT DOES? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Galea | Demolish rocks, boxes, fallen trees; light torches; | extinguish green flames ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rivas | Grow vines; light green flames ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arrode | Activate thunder switches; destroy some on-screen enemies ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deva | Activate stone platforms; act as a lift in patches of dirt ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ayne* | Push heavy blocks & crystals; grab buried chests; shake trees ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- * - Ayne doesn't have the origin, instead he performs described actions when you press Square button. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- BUILDINGS IN TOWNS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Variety of buildings (shops, inns, etc.) can be found in towns. a) Weapon shop - buy, sell, combine weapons b) Armor shop - buy, sell, combine armor c) Accessory shop - buy, sell, combine acc d) Item shop - buy, sell, combine items e) Grocery shop - buy ingredients for cooking f) Peddlers - handles a variety of items (can be found in places other than towns) g) Inn - fully restores party's HP/MP h) Restaurant/Street stall - order local food ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- BUYING AND SELLING ITEMS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If you chose to buy, this is list of items available for purchase. If you chose to sell, this is a list of your own inventory items. Numbers from left to right mean: price, number you want to buy/sell, and number you currently have. b) Right of the screen displays chrs you've acquired so far. Here changes that would be made to chr's status if that item were equipped are displayed. Chr that can equip that item is highlighted. c) MONEY entry houses money amounts for transaction. From left to right: party's current gold, total price of all items selected to be bought/sold, and finally amount of gold party would have after transaction is complete. d) At the bottom item's info is displayed. 2. Move the cursor to the item you wish to buy/sell and enter number of items by moving left/right directionals or left stick. 3. The total for the transaction is displayed in the MONEY section. When asked 'Is this OK?', select yes to complete the process. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMBINING ITEMS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. By combining your items with materials you can create new items. Items can be combined in shops or in camp screen. Some items can only be obtained by combining. 2. Materials are items that are represented with a diamond icon. You can obtain these by buying them, getting them as battle spoils or finding them in chests. 3. To open Combine menu, talk to shop clerk and select Combine command for the type of item you want to combine. To open Combine menu when in camp screen, select Combine command. Now Combine menu is open. When you have selected a category from the menu and a combinable base item, a list of the items that can be created and the materials necessary are displayed. 4. Materials not in stock are darkened. f) Bottom left corner displays changes that would be made to chr's status if that item were combined and equipped. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONVERSATIONS AND EVENTS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. You an receiev a wealth of valuable info by talking to people. They may give you hints to help you along in your adventure, enable you to get to places you couldn't reach before, or let you play minigames. Some people give your members nicknames. 2. When talking to people, you're sometimes presented with a choice of multiple responses. Your choices will be reflected in hero's personality, affecting what he says during events or after winning battles. Hero grows confident and tough by choosing positive, or timid and pessimitic if you choose negative responses (as you'll see, over half of such choices will affect your relationship with few females in the game). 3. Some people will teach you new arts if you talk to them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAMP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. As story progresses, you will eventually be able to use camp. You can set up camp on dungeon maps whenever you see a tent symbol (when you examine tent symbol, screen automatically switches to camp screen), or on the world map (select Camp command from WMM). 2. Here're available commands: a) Status command opens menu screen (explained in section 7) b) Combine command opens Combine menu (explained two paragraphs above) c) Rest command allows your party to completely recover HP/MP by using 1x Camping Kit (if you don't have any, Rest won't work) d) Chat command lets you listen to chrs talking between themselves or to refresh your memory of what is your current objective e) Cook command lets you cook various dishes (explained in section 20) f) Save command lets you save your game (explained in section 7) ============================================================================= ============================================================================= 9. BATTLE SYSTEM ============================================================================= ============================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- BATTLE SCREEN ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battle screen occurs when your party encounters enemies on Dungeon Map. Battle screen can roughly be divided into two parts. a) In the middle battle commands are displayed. Use directionals or left stick to select the command. b) In the bottom row status overviews of chrs participating are displayed: - name, followed by chr's level - HP, represented by both numbers and a bar (if HP is 0, chr is downed) - MP, represented by both numbers and a bar (if MP is 0, Origin command is unavailable) - AP, represented by both numbers and a bar (if AP is 0, certain arts cannot be used) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FLOW OF BATTLE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. First you must encounter an enemy. To do so, just wander around a bit on dungeon map until screen switches to battle screen. Max of three members can participate in battle. 2. When in battle, first selection you must make is Party command screen (PCS). You select an action for the entire party for that turn (most appropriate will often be Battle). 3. After PCS is behind you, Character command screen (CCS) is next. Here you choose an action for that turn for each chr participating in battle. You can Attack, Guard, use an item, or use Origin ability. 4. If Attack was selected on CCS, Tactical art entry screen is next. Here you can enter arts. When you are thru, select Begin battle command and battle begins. Members and enemies then perform their designated actions for that turn in order of speed (AGI stat). 5. Battle ends when either party or the enemies are downed or have run away. If you're victorious, you gain EXP, items and cash. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PARTY COMMANDS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. BATTLE PARTY COMMAND Fight the enemy for that turn. If this command is selected, CCS is up next. Here choose an action for each chr participating in battle. 2. TACTICS PARTY COMMAND Select tactic for each chr when battling under Auto mode. If this command is selected, Tactics selection screen (TSS) is next. First choose a chr you wish to change tactics for. Then choose a battle tactic for that chr. After you're done setting up tactics for all chrs, choose Tactics selected command. Selecting Begin command carries out tactics you have set up. TACTIC WHAT IT DOES? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aggressive atk | Concentrate on defeating all enemies. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Standard atk | Concentrate on attacking, but restore party when necessary. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recover/AP up | Restoring party and raising AP is important ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recover | Restoring the party is important, guard and attack when | necessary. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. RUN PARTY COMMAND Party will attempt to escape from battle. If you succeed, you leave without fighting, battle ends and no EXP, cash or items are awarded. If you fail, no more actions are possible and you are attacked by the enemy for that turn. 4. AUTO PARTY COMMAND For that turn, battling chrs automatically carry out the battle according to battle tactics chosen beforehand with Tactics command. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHARACTER COMMANDS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. ATTACK CHARACTER COMMAND For that turn, attack the enemy by entering Tactical Art System (TAS). Note that Maya won't be able to select Attack until a certain point in the game. 2. ITEM CHARACTER COMMAND For that turn, use one of the items designated for battle use. After Item command is selected, you will be prompted to choose from one of the available items. After you do so, you will need to choose the target for the item being used - it can be either party member, one of the enemies, of whole group. 3. GUARD CHARACTER COMMAND For that turn, defend against enemy attacks and reduce amount of damage received by 50%. If any defence skills are equipped on guarding chr, this is the time they're triggered. 4. ORIGIN CHARACTER COMMAND* For that turn, have chr's origin use one of its abilities to help the party or attack the enemies. Once you select Origin command, a list of abilities origin has learned so far is displayed, along with the amount of MP each ability consumes. Select the ability you want to use, then select the target/s for that ability. Origin gains more abilities as origin's LV rises. * - Ayne's command is SPIRIT, as he hosts no origin. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ELEMENTS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Each enemy monster belongs to an element class. There are eight different elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Light, Dark, Thunder and Void. 2. Elements that oppose each other are: Earth VS Wind, Fire VS Water, Light VS Dark. Void and Thunder have no opposing element. 3. If you attack an enemy with opposing element, resulting damage will be greater for 100%. 4. Similarly, attack will be less effective, if you attack an enemy with its own element - damage is reduced by 66%. Note that damage can even be nulled or absorbed. ============================================================================= ============================================================================= 10. TACTICAL ART SYSTEM ============================================================================= ============================================================================= TAS is a system of attacking the enemy by combining the four commands UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT. ------------------------- TACTICAL ART ENTRY SCREEN ------------------------- 1. As already mentioned, this screen opens up after you select Attack character command from CCS. Screen can be divided into roughly four parts: a) TAS move commands, which are UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT.* b) List of arts chr has learned so far, along with their move combos, will be displayed on the right half. You can switch between 'Display art list', 'Select art from list' and 'Hide art list' modes by pressing Circle. In 'Select art from list' mode, select the name of the art you want to use and press X. c) Art blocks which are displayed just above the bottom of the screen. Commands you entered are displayed here. As chr's LV rises, so does the amount of art blocks. d) Chr's AP, displayed both as number and gauge, are found at the bottom. * - Maya's commands here will be EARTH, FIRE, WATER and WIND. -------------- ENTERING MOVES -------------- 1. Using directionals enter any move commands you like, up to the number of art blocks available. With each move you make, one art block is filled. To cancel all commands entered up to that point, press Triangle. Remember that move commands you entered are displayed as arrows in those blocks (RIGHT will be listed as ->, LEFT will be listed as |
