Introduction =============================================================================== Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (PS2). I wrote this FAQ so I could help all of the Lord Of The Rings gamers out there. This guide doesn't cover the whole game, only 'The Path Of The Wizard'. I thought that I would write this FAQ to completely focus on Gandalf because in my opinion, it is the hardest part in the game. Oh yeah, this my first FAQ, so E-Mail me if you see any silly mistakes (Contact information is at the bottom of the page). There may be Spoilers ahead so don't tell me I didn't warn you. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== II. Version History =============================================================================== Version 1.40 - 1/31/04 - Added some Grammar mistakes and mistake in the contents. Version 1.34 - 1/29/04 - Fixed up the table of contents. Added more grammar mistakes. Version 1.22 - 1/28/04 - Added two grammar mistakes. Experience points for Minas Tirith- Courtyard should be in by next week. Version 1.20 - 1/27/04 - Added all of the special codes for Gandalf only. Version 1.10 - 1/27/04 - Added grammar mistakes in Legal stuff section. Version 1.00 - 1/25/04 - Started this guide. Covers pretty much the whole game. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== III. Character Information b. Controls =============================================================================== Speed Attack = X button (X) - Use speed attacks on regular (unshielded) enemies. Parry (Block) = Square button (S) - Use the Parry button to protect yourself from arrows. You can block any enemy apart from Trolls. Kick = Circle button (O) - Use the kick button to kick down enemies. It's not very helpful, only when you are kicking down ladders. It is used in some combos. Tip: If you purchase a combo that includes the kick button (i.e Final Judgement), press speed attack first, then press kick. Your character should charge forwards and glow in purple, sometimes knocking down enimies. Fierce attack = Triangle button (T) - Very effective on shielded enemys. It usually defeats an enemy in three hits. Action = (R1) button - Use the action button whenever you see something with a purple ring around it. It usually kills a lot of Orcs. Finishing move = (R2) button - The Finishing move allows you to finish off enemys knocked down on the ground but are not dead yet. Special move = (L1+R1+L2+R2) - Gandalf's special move is a shield that protects him from hits, it also knocks down enemys if you run into them. The bad part of Gandalf's special move is that it doesn't protect you for very long. The good part is that you can purchase upgrades that protect you for longer. Laser projectiles (Ranged attacks) = (L1+X) button(S) - To pull out Gandalf's Laser Projectiles, hold L1 and press X. For a more powerful shot, either purchase a better upgrade, or hold L1 down and hold down X until Gandalf's arm is all the way back, now release X. Jump back (dodge) = (L2) button - If there are enemys charging at you, press L2 to jump back five yards. It will give you more time and space. =============================================================================== III. Character Information c. Gandalf =============================================================================== Gandalf is my favoroute character in the film, game and book, that's why I am writing this FAQ. I will give you some good tips and how to purchase your upgrades without losing much points. ================== Must Have Upgrades ================== Orc Hewer - You must purchase this first, it's cheap and quick. If you only have 3000xp, purchase it for the fellowship. The combo is X, X, Triangle. Final Judgement - It's a bit slow with Gandalf, but it looks so cool. Try not to pull it off when you're surrounded by enemys, because if you get hit in the middle of your combo, you have to start over again. Speed attack, kick and stab in the middle of the air (X, Circle, R2). Rising Revenge - When you have been knocked down by an enemy, press X to jump up and surprise attack on your enemys. It's quite expensive, so only purchase it if you've got more than 20000xp. Light Of The Pilgram, Light Of The Forges and Light Of The Valar - Both Projectile upgrades. They are both very helpful in the game. Light Of The Valar can even go through enemys. Fog Of War, Wrath Of Anor and Flame Of Udun - All effective upgrades. When you hold Triangle, Gandalf smashes his staff on the ground different colour smoke comes out. Killing some enemys and knocking down others. All of the Banes - The Bane moves are all linked moves. They are so cool! It might take some time to pull off but they are very effective, and they automaticly put you in perfect mode. Parry and finish them off with the finishing move (Square R2). DO NOT TRY AROUND MORE THAN ONE ENEMY!!! ============ Gandalf Tips ============ In most levels in the game, you will find war pikes, barrels, cauldrens and braziers. They all have purple rings around them, stand next to it and press action (R1) and you will do a cool action. (Hold action to aim with war pikes). When you are up against shielded enemys, you can't break the shield unless you use a fierce attack or rising revenge. War pikes sometimes do the trick. Trolls - Weak point, war pikes. When you are up against a Troll, just chuck a war pike at it. It dies in one hit. In levels like Minas Tirith- Courtyard, where there are a lot of enemys, use Gandalf's special move. You are protected, and you hurt anyone you run into. If you are low on life, try and kill a weak enemy like a Goblin. When they die, they usually give you life. =============================================================================== III. Character Information d. Experience Points/Skill Meter =============================================================================== ====================== Experience Points (xp) ====================== When you are playing the game, you will notice a blue line on top of your health bar. And on top of that blue line is a number (0/300). The first number is how many experience points you have. The second number is how many more experience points you need to get to the next level. The blue line is just a more clear version of how far away you are from reaching the next level. Whenever you kill an enemy, yellow writing appears upon their head. It says the rating of the kill (fair), and how many points you got for it (75-10000). I'm going to tell you all of the ratings and how many points you get for each. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rating --------------- Experience Points ------------------ Mission Experience Fair ----------------- 75 - 300 -------------------------------- +1000 Good ----------------- 150 - 600 -------------------------------- +2000 Excellent ------------ 200 - 800 -------------------------------- +3000 Perfect -------------- 300 - 2000 -------------------------------- +5000 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (when you kill a one off enemy like a Ringwraith, you get more than 2000 points. But it was too hard for me to get the exact amount of points. I judged the highest points by killing Trolls). =========== Skill Meter =========== The Skill meter is right next to your experience points, it's the cirle that you sometimes might see multi-coloured. Your aim is to try and fill the circle with colour. You can acommplish this by hitting enemys. When you attack an enemy, the Skill meter will go read for about a second. Keep hitting the enemy and the red will go into brighter colours, and it will stay there for longer. When the Skill meter is full, it will say 'Perfect Mode', and your character will glow in purple smoke. When you are in Perfect mode, you earn more points when you defeat an enemy. You can purchase upgrades that keep you in Perfect mode for longer. But you must remember that when you are trying to fill up your Skill meter, if you get hit your meter goes down. You go straight into Perfect move whenever you sucsessfully complete a Bane. Use your combos to fill up the Skill meter even more quicker. =============================================================================== IV. Walkthrough a. Helm's Deep =============================================================================== Mission expereince - Fair-Good Experience points - 4000xp-9000xp After you watch the amazing cut-scenes of the film(s), you jump right into the battle of Helm's Deep, so be ready. At first, you are surrounded by about six Orcs, you can kill these with speed attacks. It's impossible to die on this level, so don't worry about your health. After you have defeated the unshielded enemys, you will see Legolas asking for help and Gimli will climb up a ladder. After this cut-scene, you will see some shielded enemys charging at you but do not panic because only one will go for you. Use Fierce attack to kill him. climb up the ladder that Gimli went up and defeat the enemy standing by it. Once you are up the ladder use Projectiles (L1+X) to kill the Orcs on the other side of the wall. When you have killed all of them, Aragon calls for help. Follow Legolas to the rope, do it quickly unless you want to kill the three Orcs racing you to the rope. Use action (R1) to climb down the rope. There are three catapults, fire them with the action button. Do this with the other two catapults and you have completed the first level of the game. Now sit back and enjoy the movie. =============================================================================== IV. Walkthrough b. The Road To Isengard =============================================================================== Mission experience - Fair-Excellent Experience points - 10000xp-20000xp At the start of this level, you see the Uruk-hai running away from you, you cannot shoot Projectiles at them. This level isn't very hard at all because all you do is follow the path to Isengard and kill any Uruk-hai that stand in your way. When you come across an archer in a tree, shoot it and kill the other two enemys. There are some sort of explosives ahead, so blow them up from a distance with your Projectiles. Kill the two archers on the bridge and follow the path until four Orcs jump on you, now you have reached the first checkpoint. ********** CHECKPOINT ********** Now you have to kill 75 Orcs. It's not as hard as you think though. You don't actually have to kill 75 Orcs, 75 Orcs have to die. The Ents just stomp around the arena killing Orcs. But don't get too happy because the Ents can tread on you too. When all 75 Orcs are dead, run through the rocks and shoot all of the archers with Projectiles. ********** CHECKPOINT ********** When you are up the hill, ignore the archers shooting at you, just blow up the explosives. Continue running up the hill and you will see five huge towers full of archers shooting at you. There are explosives next to each tower, so you might as well blow them up and watch the fire-works. Now cross the bridge and defeat the two shielded enemys. A lot of Orcs and Uruk hai will jump on you so kill them and run back down the hill. Follow the hill until you see an Ent trying to pull down a wall. Defeat the Uruk-hai champion and kill all of the archers shooting at the Ent. Keep on doing this until the level is complete. Remember that you can shoot the wall with your Projectiles. =============================================================================== IV. Walkthrough c. Minas Tirith- Top Of The Wall =============================================================================== Mission experience - Fair-Perfect Experience points - 20000xp-30000xp In this level for once something else is more important than killing Orcs, ladders (Man I never thought that I'd hear myself say that). Your aim in this level is to not be overruned by Orcs. Use the map in the top right hand side of the screen. When you see a red dot on the map, that means that there is a ladder in that position. You can knock down ladders by pressing circle (kick). When you are running to a ladder and an enemy gets in your way, just kick it down instead of killing it because you don't have much time. When you see a ladder in the middle of the wall, climb down the nearest rope and kick it down so that you don't get stopped by Orcs. You will see a short cut-scene of a Troll pushing a tower of Orcs. When the cut-scene is over, you will notice a big blue dot on your map, that blue dot is a catapult. The flashing red dot is a tower. Run up to the catapult and shoot at the tower two times. When the first tower is down, another flashing red dot appears on the right side of the map, run over to it and shoot Projectiles at it. When it is down, head back to the catapult and shoot at the tower. A Ring- Raith flys to the catapult trying to kill men but just shoot at it and it will crash into the wall. Since The wall has been knoked down, You have to climb down a rope in order to get to the next tower. Use Gandalf's special move to kill all of the Orcs and shoot Projectiles to blow up the tower. When the tower has gone, follow the crowd of Oaths down to the Courtyard and the level has been completed. Tip: In this level, always kick down any ladder you see. But if there is a tower, don't go out of your way to kick down a ladder. Towers come first, then the ladders, then Orcs. =============================================================================== IV. Walkthrough d. Minas Tirith- Courtyard =============================================================================== Mission experience - Good-Perfect Experience points - (Coming soon) What you have to do in this level is to save 200 people so that they can flee to the inner city. At first, about five shielded Orcs come into the Courtyard, it would be easier to break their shields first and just use speed attacks to finish them off. Whenever you have a bit of space, shoot the archers standing by the entrance. When the champion Orcs come out, Parry there first attack and use Fierce attacks to finish them off. After you've saved about 150 people, Trolls march in. The first thing you should do when the Trolls come in is to throw war pikes at them. Keep on battling through the level until you have saved 200 people. Tip: There are three healh jars around the level but they are hard to find because they are inside barrels. You can break open the barrels with speed attacks. There is one by the walls to the inner city, one by the big entrance and one on the near right of the level. 'Your part of this battle is done. Our faith now lies in the path of a Hobbit and a King'. =============================================================================== V.
