Version 1.2 May 30, 2003 Did some general editing & added disclaimer and Intro ----------[The Basics of Upgrading]---------- In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, your characters are able to purchase upgrades such as new attacks, combinations, armour and weapons using their experience points. You must reach the specified level in order to purchase some of these upgrades, but several upgrades require other items in order to be bought. It is suggested that you buy as many upgrades as you can at a time, as you require many powerful attacks in order to complete the game. The upgrades are listed under their respective level. ----------[Upgrades for Aragorn]---------- Level 1 Upgrades ------------------------ Triple Strike Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): X X X Notes: This simple combination is your speedy attack. Though it causes little damage, the quick slashing and stabbing can subdue an enemy with ease. Double Hack Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): Triangle Triangle Notes: This is your fierce attack that is used for breaking enemy shields. It is quicker and very much more powerful than the speedy attack, so it is recommended that you use this attack as much as possible (until you purchase better attacks). Shadow Strike Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): R2 Notes: The shadow strike allows you to stab injured enemies who are lying on the ground. This causes immediate death, making it a useful assault to perform. Combat Kick Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): O Notes: The combat kick does not cause damage nor does it break shields, but this attack still has its uses. The primary use of this move is to kick enemies off cliffs or knock them to the ground, but it can be used to knock down enemy ladders. Note that shielded enemies will not fall down unless their shield is broken. Sword Parry Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): Square Notes: The sword parry is a good way to conserve health and set your enemy up for a deadly combination. Your character can defend against many attacks, but remember that you cannot freely move while defending, so try to time your parries correctly. Note that enemies are sometimes stunned temporarily after their attacks are blocked, so use that to your advantage. Dunedain Bow Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): Hold L1 and press X Notes: The Dunedain bow is the ordinary bow of Aragorn that should be replaced quickly. It does little damage and has no special effects (such as setting the enemy on fire), but is a reliable weapon that will see you through the first half of the game. Level 2 Upgrades ------------------------- Rush Attack Cost: 3000 points Button(s): X, O Notes: This attack is best used to drive unshielded foes to the ground and leave them open to a shadow strike. This simple combination is quite useful, as you quickly slash, then force an enemy to the ground with a huge hit with your sword. Useful, but not necessarily worth the points. Rising Attack Cost: 8000 points Button(s): X (while on the ground) Notes: This is a useful attack that should be purchased because of its power and ability to get you out of tough situations. While on the ground, press X to rise up and slash any nearby enemies. This strike can take out shields in one hit and hurt multiple enemies at once. This is worth it, even if it only gets you 'fair' and 'good' ratings. Isildur's Swift Terror Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X X Triangle Notes: This quick combo is not that powerful, but topples enemies for big points. Isildur's War Rush Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X O R2 Notes: This is another quick combination that can dispatch enemies with ease and speed. You slash the enemy, knock him to the ground and perform a powerful shadow strike to finish it off. Though very powerful and simple, this attack will probably only get you a 'good' rating. Ranger Fury Cost: 2000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: This is your fury attack that is devastating when fully upgraded. Sadly, this attack is not great, even though it can hurt enemies all around you. The main problem is that you have to wait 2-3 seconds before you can use the attack, and it only gives you 'good' or 'fair' ratings. Still, buy this attack to help you in the later stages. Strength of the Stewards Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is an armour upgrade that will slightly increase the amount of armour you have. Though the results are very limited, it is worth getting this upgrade so that you can survive longer in those tough later levels. Level 4 Upgrades ------------------------ Goblin Bane Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: The goblin bane is a useful attack that instantly kill an attacking goblin. You start by blocking an attack with ¦, and then quickly pressing X and R2 in speedy succession. This attack is not really worth the money, as goblins are easily killed, but on the other hand, this attack usually gets you 'excellent' ratings, so this attack may be useful in the long run. Charge Attack (requires rush attack) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): X O Notes: The charge attack is basically a stronger rush attack, so it still does not work on shielded enemies, rarely kills an enemy and gets you a 'good' rating. Buy the rush attack so that you have that option, but because this attack is minimally better, it is advised to save your points. Isildur's Death Charge Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X O Triangle Notes: This upgrade is similar to the war rush of Isildur, as you rush attack an enemy and then quickly smash down on it with your sword. This will get you 'good' ratings, so do not bother with this attack, especially if you have the war rush. Isildur's Gambit Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X Triangle X X Notes: The gambit is a reasonable attack where you quickly strike your opponent 3 times and finish the enemy with a huge stab. Don't bother with this attack, as it only works on unshielded foes. Rohan Bow (requires Dunedain Bow) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Hold L1 and press X to fire Notes: This upgrade increases the power of your arrows slightly, so in the short run this upgrade is not worth it. That said, the Rohan bow will help you dispatch enemies quicker and will set you on the road for the level 8 bow! Don't bother with this upgrade either, as only Legolas' bow is worth upgrading. Strength of Isildur (requires Strength of the Stewards) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is the second armour upgrade that will further increase the amount of health you had. You may as well buy this improvement too, as a lot of armour is needed on the later levels. Level 6 Upgrades ------------------------- Orc Bane Cost: 6000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: The Orc bane instantly kills an attacking Orc and gives you an excellent rating, so it is worth the buy. Orcs mainly are shielded, so this attack will help you kill the many Orc without breaking every shield they have. Isildur's Deliverance Cost: 5000 points Button(s): Triangle X X Triangle Notes: The deliverance attack is a strong combination that has the potential to break an enemy's shield and slaughter them in seconds. Though with this benefit, this combination is not really worth the points. Wilderness Rage (requires Ranger Fury) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: The wilderness rage is your improved fury attack that will cause a lot of damage to any nearby foes. If you have bought the ranger fury attack, by all means buy this upgrade, but if you did not buy the original fury attack, then do not bother with this. Level 8 Upgrades ------------------------ Strength of Elendil (requires Strength of Isildur) Cost: 10000 Button(s): None Notes: This is another armour upgrade that will only improve you health slightly, so do not bother about buying this anymore. Bane of Saruman Cost: 8000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: The bane of Saruman is one of the most useful attacks in the game. After parrying an Uruk-Hai attack, you can quickly slice them in the chest area twice and finish them off by a huge stab. This will nearly always get you 'excellent' ratings and will help you drastically in the game. Isildur's Judgment Cost: 5000 points Button(s): Triangle Triangle O Triangle Notes: This is also a brilliant combo that is primarily used for taking out shielded enemies. With the first two strikes you break the shield, and then knock them down and strike them on the floor. This most likely will result in an immediate kill, and light up your sword to allw for 'perfect' ratings. Strength of Argonath Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is the last shield upgrade that is pretty worthless, mainly because you do not need the health it provides. If you don't believe that you can survive on the later levels, feel free to buy this shield. Wrath of Numenor Cost: 6000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: This is the last fury attack improvement that you can buy, and if you have the points and the need, purchase this attack. Not only do you smash through any enemies nearby, but you also set all the enemies on fire! This will get you poor ratings, but it will help you in times of need. Gondor bow Cost: 6000 points Button(s): L1 and X Notes: The Gondor bow is the last ranged weapon upgrade for Aragorn, but is not nearly as good as I had hoped. Though these arrows do further damage to you present arrows, the simple fact is that you do not need a good ranged weapon when playing as Aragorn. The latter is a great swordsman and does not require much of a ranged weapon, so do not bother with this. Master Swordsman Cost: 10000 Button(s): None Notes: The master swordsman upgrade increases the strength of your speedy attack, but as you probably will not be using the speedy attack once you have better combinations and your enemies are tougher (when you get to level 6), so this is a pretty useless upgrade. If you try to beat the eariler levels and get perfect ratings, you will have problems because the speedy attack will kill the easy enemies in 1/2 shots, which will not get you 'perfect' ratings. ----------[Upgrades for Legolas]---------- Legolas is an agile character with a host of quick swipes and slashes, as well as his brilliant bow. Level 1 Upgrades ------------------------ Combat Kick Cost: Purchased (you have it when you start the game) Button(s): O Notes: The combat kick is a simple, but quick and effective means of dispatching enemies. Though it cannot break shields nor harm their carriers, the combat kick is useful for kicking enemies off the many cliffs in the game to get 'excellent' ratings. Triple Strike Cost: Purchased (you have it when you start the game) Button(s): X X X Notes: The triple attack is Legolas' speedy attack. Though not very powerful, Legolas uses his speed to quickly swipe and stab your opponent, causing a lot of damage. Double Hack Cost: Purchased (you have it when you start the game) Button(s): Triangle Triangle Notes: The double hack is the fierce attack for Legolas that is useful in smashing shields and disemboweling enemies. Mirkwood Longbow Cost: Purchased (you have it when you start the game) Button(s): L1 and X Notes: The Mirkwood Longbow is a fast action, powerful bow that is not great during the later levels, but paves the way to Legolas' ultimate bow! Shadow Strike Cost: Purchased (You have it when you start the game) Button(s): R2 Notes: The shadow strike is a useful attack when wanting to dispatch injured enemies that are lying on the ground. Press R2 while they are in this state to stab them (killing them instantly), but be quick, as when an enemy starts to get up, you can no longer shadow strike it. Knife Parry Cost: Purchased (you have it when you start the game) Button(s): Square Notes: This basic parry helps you conserve health by blocking any attack (other than from a cave troll). Use this against single enemies, but remember that you cannot run while blocking. Because of this, run when confronted by groups of enemies and try to single one enemy out. Level 2 Upgrades ------------------------ Rush Attack Cost: 3000 points Button(s): X O Notes: The rush attack is a quick, but powerful combo that can smash shields and knock several enemies to the ground at once! Unfortunately, this attack does not work at long range and is not for killing enemies. An attack worth getting. Elrond's Swift Terror Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X X Triangle Notes: This swift attack is an important one that allows you to kill many enemies at a time and easily get 'perfect' ratings. This combo is not greatly powerful (but it does not need to be), but its main problem is that fact that if you try the speedy attack on a shield, it will do no damage. Elrond's War Rush Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X O R2 Notes: This unnecessary attack can instantly kill any shield-less enemy in three swift strikes, but this attack gets you 'good' ratings and can only kill enemies one at a time. Still, this attack is useful when confronted by a single enemy that you wish to kill quickly. Elven Fury Cost: 2000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: This fury attack is useful when clearing out groups of enemies, stopping enemies from all sides, smashing enemy catapults and breaking barricades in one hit, but has several drawbacks that diminish its effectiveness. The main problem with this attack is that it takes about 2-3 seconds to charge up and be ready to use, so while you are waiting for it to charge up, you are open to attack. You also mainly get 'fair' ratings from this attack, but overall this attack is cheap and worth getting. Rivendell Longbow Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Hold L1, press X Notes: The Rivendell longbow is near exactly the same as the Mirkwood Longbow, except these ash arrows are much more powerful. This upgrade is definitely worth the points, as it will help you kill all long range foes a lot faster. Force of Celeborn Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This shield upgrade adds a small amount of extra health to you that will help you survive through the majority of the game. This upgrade may be expensive, but is definitely needed due to Legolas's lack of armour. Level 4 Upgrades ------------------------ Goblin Bane Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: This is a quick move that can instantly kill any attacking goblin in a few seconds but this attack is needless, mainly because Goblins are easily killed without this attack. Rising Attack Cost: 8000 points Button(s): X (while on the ground) Notes: This is a useful move that can smash shields and cause a lot of damage to them easily. Though this attack does involve you losing health (as you have to be knocked down before you can use it) and will get you a 'fair' rating if you kill an enemy, this attack can help you kill groups of enemies quickly. Charge Attack (requires Rush Attack) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): X O Notes: This attack is basically the same as the rush attack, except it works from a longer range and does slightly more damage. Because of these meagre benefits, this move is not worth getting. Elrond's Death Charge Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X O Triangle Notes: The death charge is a powerful attack which can quickly kill/badly injure any enemy. It can break a shield at the appropriate range, so this upgrade is worth getting, even if it will get you a 'good' rating. Elrond's Gambit Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X Triangle X X Notes: This quick attack can easily take out an unshielded foe by quickly slashing the opponent, performing a fierce attack on it and stabbing it to death. An attack that is not as effective because it does not worth with shielded enemies, but is still worth getting. Lothlorien Longbow (requires Rivendell Longbow) Cost: 6000 points Button(s): Hold L1 and press X Notes: The enchanted arrows of Lothlorien do ghastly damage to any enemies. Get this improvement, as it is relatively cheap, but powerful. Level 6 Upgrades ------------------------ Orc Bane Cost: 6000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: This is another swift combo especially made to instantaneously kill an attacking Orc. This is especially useful against the shielded Orcs that take longer to kill, so buy this upgrade and save yourself time and health. Elrond's Deliverance Cost: 5000 points Button(s): Triangle X X Triangle Notes: This combination is similar to Elrond's gambit except this attack is better at breaking shields and hurting the ones who carry them. A pretty worthwhile attack that can easily kill unshielded foes. Dragon fire Arrows (requires Lothlorien Longbow) Cost: 8000 points Button(s): Hold L1 and press X Notes: The dragon fire arrows set any enemy it his light, so these arrows kill in one shot! The downside of enemies burning to death is that you will only get a 'fair' rating for the kill, but that minor complaint is easily drowned out by the huge number of pros for this weapon. Gil-Galad's Rage Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: This improved fury attack causes a lot more damage to any enemies it hits, but t is really not necessary. Force of Galadriel (requires Force of Celeborn) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: Another health upgrade, the Force of Galadriel is probably unnecessary unless you have trouble maintaining life. If you do, obtain this upgrade, but otherwise stay away from this waste of points. Level 8 Upgrades ------------------------- Bane of Saruman Cost: 8000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: This is probably one of the most worthwhile attacks, as you can easily kill any annoying Uruk-Hai by stabbing your foe twice in the stomach and finishing it off with a huge kick. This is a definite buy! Elrond's Judgement Cost: 5000 points Button(s): Triangle Triangle O Triangle Notes: Elrond's Judgement is a brilliant attack that is well worth its meagre price. With this, you can easily kill groups of shielded enemies and effortlessly get 'perfect' ratings for the many kills you will get. This is also a definite buy. Mithril Arrows (requires Dragon Fire arrows) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): Hold L1 and press X Notes: The Mithril arrows are brilliant arrows that damage all foes in their path. All enemies that they touch are set alight, so this bow offers an easy kill. Buy this upgrade if you have enough money, or otherwise just settle for the Dragon Fire arrows. Elven Bow Mastery Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This improvement increases the damage of each arrow you fire, so that even the Mithril arrows become even more devastating. Sadly, this upgrade is unnecessary, as your bow is good enough without this upgrade and it is very expensive. ----------[Upgrades for Gimli]---------- Gimli is a very strong, but sluggish character who beats his opponents with sheer power and his huge axe. His moves are based on this. Level 1 Upgrades Triple Strike Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): X X X Notes: This quick combo is very powerful and can kill most early enemies in one or two hits. Though this only gets you 'good' ratings, it is effective at taking out many enemies at a time and killing powerful enemies efficiently. Double Hack Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): Triangle Triangle Notes: This is your basic fierce attack that is tremendously powerful and kills even armoured foes speedily. Use this to smash shields or to kill enemies quickly. Shadow Strike Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): R2 Notes: The shadow strike immediately kills any enemy that is lying on the floor, so a good way to kill an enemy is just to knock them down and finish them off with this attack. Axe Thrust Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): O Notes: The axe thrust is a simple melee attack that can be used to knock enemies off cliffs in order to get an 'excellent' rating or just to knock them down. Try to mix this attack up with the speedy attacks and fierce attacks in order to clear out large groups of enemies. Axe Parry Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): Square Notes: This simple parry can easily block enemy swipes and deflect arrows in order to save you health. Erebor Axes Cost: Purchased (you have this when you start the game) Button(s): Hold L1 and press X Notes: These razor sharp throwing axes do a lot of damage but are in a limited capacity. Level 2 Upgrades ---------------- Rush Attack Cost: 3000 points Button(s): X O Notes: This attack is useful in driving unshielded foes into the ground, giving you the chance to shadow strike all enemies you hit. It is advised that you purchase this attack, as it is cheap and quite useful. Balin's Swift Terror Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X X Triangle Notes: As the name says, this is a swift attack that is sure to wipe out a lot of enemies during the course of the game. After 2 quick swipes, you finish off any nearby attackers with a huge smash. This combo is sure to give you lots of 'perfect' ratings and lots of kills. Balin's War Rush Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X O R2 Notes: This devastating attack may only give you 'good' ratings, but it kills enemies quickly by performing a rush attack on them and polishing them off with a powerful shadow strike. This attack is really not required, as it is easier just to buy the rush attack and perform that on an enemy, and then finish them off with a shadow strike rather than buying the exact same thing for more points. Dwarven Fury Cost: 2000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: This is your fury attack that should be purchased because of its meagre price and huge amounts of damage it dishes out to multiple enemies. Though it may only get you 'good' or 'fair' ratings, and you have to charge up before using this attack, it is worth it anyway. Might of Rock Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is your first armour upgrade that probably is worth buying. Though only a small amount of health is added on to you, this purchase it well worth it in the log run. Might of Iron (requires Might of Rock) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is your second armour upgrade that will further increase the amount of health you start a level with. Though expensive, you probably should consider acquiring this upgrade to help you through the tougher levels. Note that this should be the last armour upgrade you buy. Level 4 Upgrades ------------------------ Goblin Bane Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: This is a pretty useless upgrade because all goblins in the game are immensely easy, so wasting points on killing such an easy enemy is not advised. This may give you a lot of 'excellent' ratings, but it probably is not worth it anyway. Rising Attack Cost: 8000 points Button(s): X (while on the ground) Notes: This is a useful attack that involves you slashing all enemies near you when you get to your feet. Though it requires you to be hurt and fall down, this attack can break shields and hurt multiple enemies, so it is well worth the points. Killing enemies with it will get you 'good' or 'fair' ratings though. Charge Attack (requires Rush Attack) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): X O Notes: The charge attack is basically the same as the rush attack, except it works from greater distances and is slightly more powerful. That said, the rush attack is adequate and does not need to be replaced. All in all, a waste of money. Balin's Death Charge Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X O Triangle Notes: This is very similar to the War Rush, except it sometimes does not kill the enemy. If you already have the war rush, do not bother with this upgrade, and if you don't, then buy either one (they cost the same). Balin's Gambit Cost: 5000 points Button(s): X Triangle X X Notes: This quick, but powerful combo can easily kill multiple enemies and cause lots of damage to enemy catapults. It is definitely worth the money. Rune of Protection (requires Might of Iron) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is your third armour upgrade that is no longer needed, as you have ample health to last you through the game. If you do wish, you can buy it, but I would suggest you just save your points up for the level 6 and 8 upgrades. Level 6 Upgrades ---------------- Orc Bane Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: This is a great combination for getting rid or the shielded and normal Orcs that plague you through the game. Well worth it! Balin's Deliverance Cost: 5000 points Button(s): Triangle X X Triangle Notes: This powerful attack is useful when ridding enemies of their shields or just wreck havoc among groups of unshielded enemies. It is possible to get 'perfect' ratings with this attack, so it is greatly valuable (contrary to what its price dictates). Might of Balin (requires Rune of Protection) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is one of the last shield upgrades that is not needed because Gimli has ample health without this upgrade. Put shortly, needless. Might of Gloin (requires Might of Balin) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: The 2nd last shield upgrade, the might of Gloin adds a small amount of armour to your already large total. If need be, purchase this, but otherwise just stay away. Moria Axes (require Erebor Axes) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Hold L1 and press X Notes: These powerful axes do a lot more damage than their predecessors and are probably worth the price. The problem is that Gimli has little need for better axes, so you had better just leave your throwing axes as they are. Mountain Rage (requires Dwarven Fury) Cost: 4000 points Button(s): Triangle (hold) Notes: his powerful fury attack makes your axe glow orange and causes huge damage to any nearby enemies. Though killing enemies with this gets you only 'good' and 'fair' ratings, it is worth the points. Level 8 Upgrades -------------------------- Bane of Saruman Cost: 8000 points Button(s): Square X R2 Notes: his excellent combo is perfect for quickly killing and Uruk-Hai that attack you. After you block one of their frequent attacks, you drive your axe into their chest - death is immediate. This gets you 'excellent' ratings and saves you health. Balin's Judgement Cost: 5000 points Button(s): Triangle Triangle O Triangle Notes: This perfect combination easily rids you of shielded and unshielded enemies quickly by performing several fierce attacks and a rush attack. This easily gets you 'perfect' ratings, mainly because this attack can topple several enemies at a time. Definitely get this combo because it is greatly powerful and cheap. Might of Khazad-dum (requires Might of Gloin) Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This is our last shield upgrade that is not worth the great amount of points because it barely increases your health and you already have enough health anyway. Wrath of Moria (requires Mountain Fury) Cost: 6000 points Button(s): Trianlge (hold) Notes: The Wrath of Moria upgrade improves your fury attack so that it causes more damage to any nearby enemies and sets them on fire! Misty Mountain Axes Cost: 6000 points Button(s): None Notes: These axes cause a lot more damage to any enemies they hit, but as I said before, Gimli does not require great axes. Only buy this if you have a lot of points to spare. Axe Mastery of Kings Cost: 10000 points Button(s): None Notes: This upgrade improves the power of your fierce attack, so smashing enemy shields becomes easier. Again, this is not required as Gimli's fierce attacks are great without this upgrade. ----------[Which Upgrades to get]---------- All Characters o Swift Terror combo o Judgement Combo o Rising Attack o Bane of Saruman o Orc Bane o 1st Shield upgrade o Fury Attack o Ranged Weapon upgrade 1 o Rush Attack o Gambit combo Legolas o All bow upgrades up to at least Dragon fire arrows o Elven Bow Mastery o Shield upgrade 2 Aragorn o Wilderness Rage o All bow upgrades Gimli o Mountain Fury/Wrath of Moria fury attack upgrade o Axe mastery of Kings ----------[Conclusion]---------- I hope you have enjoyed this guide and have found it useful in some way.
