* Have a contribution? Don't hesitate to send it in. I will accept most
submissions sent in to me as long as I can understand what you are
saying. To make sure I get it right explain it in full-detail before
sending it my way.
* I regularly scan the game board for any information that I may find
useful. Chances are that if it was posted on the board then I have most
likely seen it. I will post a message in any topic that I take
information from so if you find some information that you think I don't
have then send me an e-mail.
* I normally don't say this but I have been getting quite a few e-mails
regarding topics already discussed in the guide. I understand that you
need help but the answers can be found in the guide. PLEASE look through
the guide before contacting me. I put my e-mail in so that you can

--- WHAT'S NEW? (Version History) ----
-----------------------------------------
Version 1.21 | April 30, 2005 | 508 kb
One very tiny update to clear up the subject of a number of e-mails that I've
been recieving as of late. No more e-mails about the Kerotan in Dolinovodno!
Version 1.10 | March 8, 2005 | 505 kb
Haven't updated in a while. Now with the PAL release I feel that I should to
at least update all the new stuff in that version of the game. So, besides
the PAL extras, I listed some more FAQs, and added in some new reader
submissions. People have been sending me stuff for months and I haven't payed
any attention to them in the slightest. This will alos be one of the last
updates for a while, I'm losing interest in this guide and this game. I'm
moving on to the dark side, I'm playing Splinter Cell! *gets shot by fanboys*
Version 1.00 | January 18, 2005 | 486 kb
I finally (FINALLY) completed the plot summary. It's a bit lengthy and I split
it up into sections for easier reading. I also fixed a few confusing errors
in the appendices and the game basics sections. I'm considering this the
first complete version of the guide. I've got all the information I want in
here and I think I've reached a point where the guide is very comprehensive.
I'm going to be working on some other things in the coming time so updates are
going to slow down. The only thing that is left is to do 40-something
descriptions for the plants and animals in the game but I'm too
lazy/bored/uninterested to finish it up.
Version 0.85 | Januray 6, 2005 | 408 kb
Whew...I completely reformatted the walkthrough for the game. Each section
now has a distinct header as well as a lost of each plant, animal, item, and
weapon. Hopefully this helps a bit. I'm working on the plot summary right
now, it's currently at the point where Snake sees encounters Volgin outside
Ponizovje Warehouse.
Version 0.80 | January 2, 2005 | 343 kb
So...after recieving some rather inflammatory e-mails about one astonishingly
small mistake I've now changed one of my answers in the FAQ section to read
differently. Calm down, dudes! So anyways, I've fixed some of the tables...
some of them weren't formatting 100% properly. I also updated the copyright
notice and added in a huge amount of submissions from one very-well motivated
reader.
Version 0.70 | December 23, 2004 | 333 kb
HUGE UPDATE!! I updated all of the boss strategies by expanding them and
putting them into paragraph form. I fixed up the walkthrough by removing some
unnecessary formatting and changed some of the general headings in the guide
to make it a little more organized. I also did a small Kerotan Frog
walkthrough for all of you people looking for those frogs. In addition to
that I even spellchecked the guide and found a few hundred spelling errors!
The Secrets & Easter Eggs section has also been doubled in length with new
secrets.
Version 0.60 | December 16, 2004 | 274 kb
Walkthrough completed! Whew! Now I'm going to take a well deserved break and
rest up so that I can...ah screw it. Who am I kidding. I'll be back in a few
days with yet another update!
Version 0.50 | December 13, 2004 | 252 kb
Completed the walkthrough up until the re-entrance of Groznyj Grad. I also
tweaked some formatting here and there in the guide. I also added in some
things to the appendices to make them slightly more informative. I'll be
working on the appendices in full once I get the walkthrough done. By the next
update I'll try and have the entire walkthrough completed.
Version 0.35 | December 10, 2004 | 216 kb
I completed the walkthrough up until the fight with The End. When will I
update next? I'm not sure, depends on how much motivation some of you fools
have sapped from me by sending me so many dim-witted e-mails.
Version 0.26 | December 6, 2004 | 199
I removed some things due to certain complications that I won't go into right
now. Consider this a de-update or something like that.
Version 0.25 | December 3, 2004 | 204 kb
Sorry for the delay but I had quite a bit of homework to do and a long power
outage two days ago. I've resumed my normal pace and I've gotten up to the
battle with The Fear. I've added in a load of reader submissions as well as
fixing numerous errors that were found in the guide.
Version 0.20 | November 29, 2004 | 179 kb
Some new reader submissions and a bit more walkthrough. I'm getting too many
e-mails about things already in the guide. READ THE ****ING GUIDE, NITWITS!
Version 0.18 | November 27, 2004 | 161 kb
Ugh, I was having some problems getting my walkthrough off the laptop and onto
the computer I use for everything else. The floppy disk drive crapped out on
me so I had to figure out how to transfer the files with a USB cable. Got it
working fine, at least for now. Anyways, in this update I added in a Search
String, added in some camos, a good amount of fan submissions, and a few new
areas of walkthrough.
Version 0.15 | November 25, 2004 | 143 kb
Thanks to the dozen or so people that e-mailed me about how great this guide
is. In this update I have completed the weapons info, added in some of the
first camouflages in the game, completed the items section, and added in some
boss strategies. The Frequently Asked Questions section has been updated for
the first time, it now contains most of the questions I have been bombarded
with about both the gameplay and the story. I have also added in a plot
summary for MGS and MGS2 submitted by Grant Gordon (futuresuperstar). Next
update should contain some boss strategies as well as some new walkthrough.
Version 0.10 | November 23, 2004 | 88 kb
The walkthrough covers Operation Virtuous Mission in its entirety. There are
a few partially completed appendices as well. More updates to come soon.

---- Chapter 1 : Introduction ----
[01INTR]
==============================================================================
Understandably, many gamers were disappointed in the days following the
release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty because they had all been duped
by the creator of the series into thinking that they were going to be playing
as Solid Snake for the entirety of the game. On the horrifying contrary, they
found themselves controlling an effeminate newbie called Raiden. Fans of the
series were in shock, how could this be possible? Many promptly lost their
faith in the series and moved on to playing inferior substitutes such as
Splinter Cell :P (note to the quick-to-jump-to-conclusions, I love Splinter
Cell. It's just a joke, calm down.)
However, there were people who were drawn in by the convoluted storyline and
perhaps some of the best gameplay ever to grace a gaming console. The fans
that stuck around for the next installation have been rewarded with a
masterpiece. And just like that masterpiece of a game, this FAQ will be one
to treasure forever as one of those truly moving experiences. You will be
taken for a long and winding ride as I explain the intricacies of walking
around and navigating the menus. Once I have accomplished that I will boggle
your brain by taking you step by step through each moment of the game.
Hm...I'm going to stop trying to sound important. Basically, this FAQ is
meant to help you get out of just about any jam that you get into. I'll also
be explaining just about every minor detail about how the game works how it
should be played, what you can do in the game, and anything else that I can
throw in. I'm hoping for a completely comprehensive guide for the game and I
did it just for you guys, don't you feel special?
Please take note that this is not at all a story-synopsis or a character FAQ,
if you have any story related questions then I am not the person to ask. You
may direct your questions to the message boards, to your friends, your
goldfish, or any of the other FAQ writers that have covered this game as long
as it is not me. This guide is strictly about the gameplay of Metal Gear
Solid 3: Snake Eater. There is --some-- story related materials in here but I
try to keep it at a bare minimum.
If you are still reading at this point then I would like to say that I
appreciate you taking the time to look at my guide and I sincerely hope that
you enjoy reading it and find it of the most use.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or contributions to make
then you can e-mail me at the address provided below. I will only accept
questions, comments, suggestions, and contributions if they abide by the
guidelines outlined below. I do not think that I am asking much by doing
that, but if you do have a problem with that then I ask you just not send me
anything at all. I understand that this makes me seem a bit anal but when you
get as many e-mails as I do you can't afford to deal with stuff you don't want
to.

infiltrate and avoid detection
STEAL
vt.{stole stolen} to perform an action in a silent, secretive manner.
vi. to proceed secretively, to sneak to move silently.
n. stealth the act of moving silently and secretly.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is a 3D action-adventure game that lets you experience the
thrill of sneaking past the enemy without being seen. You play the role of
Snake, who must infiltrate enemy territory and carry out a top-secret mission.
If the enemy sees you, they'll call for reinforcements and things are bound to
get rough. You'll want to avoid battle whenever possible.
Knowing how to survive in hostile territory will be crucial. In this mission,
your top priority will be staying alive in a combat zone. Raid provisions
warehouses to get supplies for maintaining stamina and treat wounds to keep
Snake in fighting condition.
The game is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons or groups,
living or dead, is purely coincidental.

The controls in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are complex. Almost every
button has a different function depending what item you have equipped, your
position (crawling, against a wall), or any other circumstance. They are very
context sensitive. This section that immediately follows will provide you
with a basic outline of what each button can do and then the next few sections
after that will detail how to do each of those and some special actions and
such.

--- RADAR ------------------
Unlike in previous Metal Gear Solid games this game does not default to the
usual Soliton Radar that we have come to know and love. Instead we now have a
battery powered mechanical radar that picks up everything that is living
around you. That means frogs, birds, snakes, and so on will all appear on
your radar. Be careful with this since you may get into some trouble either
running for your life from a frog or running out of battery power and not being
able to use it at all.
--- GAUGES ------------------
Life Gauge
------------
This is the one gauge that you will want to watch closest for the entire game.
This gauge represents Snake's life. The more of it that is filled up the more
life he has, the lower it is the less life he has. This gauge can be restored
by using the Cure menu or by taking Life Recovery medicines.
When the Life Gauge turns red at any point in the game that means that Snake
has gotten a serious injury such as a broken bone, gunshot wound, stab wound
or otherwise. What you want to do when this happens is go into the Survival
Viewer and then into the Cure menu and use the proper procedures and supplies
to heal Snake up. See the Cure section for more information.
Please note that smoking Cigars will slowly but surely decrease Snake's Life
Gauge, but it will only deplete it to the point where he will begin to bleed.
Once it reaches that point it will stop depleting health.
Stamina Gauge
---------------
This gauge shows how much energy Snake has left. The higher his Stamina bar
is the more energy he has and the better he will perform in combat and other
situations. This bar is decreased by almost everything that you do: walking,
running, climbing, hanging, and so on. Once he gets down to the last 1/4 of
the bar his performance will become very impaired and many things will become
difficult to do: running, stalking, climbing, aiming and so on.
You will want this to be in the top 3/4 most of the time. You can save
yourself some of the bar by thinking ahead and performing actions that are
essential and nothing else. The bar can be recovered quite easily though as
long as you have some food for Snake to munch on. Certain foods will give him
more stamina than others but all will give some sort of contribution.
Grip Gauge
------------
This only appears when Snake is hanging off of a ledge or railing. As soon as
Snake enters Hanging Mode the gauge will appear on screen. As it decreases
Snake will gradually lose his grip on the surface he is holding onto. When it
reaches zero Snake will fall. He may or may not die or lose health depending
upon how high up he is. If you do not wish for him to fall then you want to
get him back up onto a solid surface by pressing the "Action Button".
Please note that the duration of the grip gauge also depends upon how much
stamina Snake has. The less he has the faster the gauge will drop and vice
versa.
--- ENEMY TACTICS AND INTELLIGENCE ------------------
The jump made in enemy intelligence from the last game is almost comparable to
that made between MGS and MGS2. In MGS3 the enemies have received a whole new
array of tactics and decisions to take you out with speed and precision. If
you think I am saying this in pure jest you may go and try to outwit the
guards yourself. Not easy, is it?
The enemy in this game will flank, use suppressing fire, flush you out with
grenades, take cover, back each other up and so on. Think you can sit behind
that tree forever? Think again. The enemy will most likely toss a grenade in
your direction to either kill you or flush you out of hiding. They succeed a
surprising amount of times when they do this.
Also take note that the enemy will not simply stop firing at you if you have
one of their comrades taken hostage. They will circle around, cut off your
exits, attack you with a knife, and maybe even sacrifice their comrade to kill
you.
Basically, expect the enemy to be smarter than the average bear, as Yogi likes
to say. They behave and act and perform just like a well-trained soldier and
unit. Don't_underestimate_them.
--- ALERT MODES ------------------
Unlike in previous Metal Gear games as soon as you alert a guard or make him
suspicious you will be in Alert or Caution mode, depending upon what you did
to alert the guard. When either of the modes start there will by a timer that
counts down to zero. If you are in Caution mode and the timer reaches zero
the game will go back to normal. If you are in alert mode then the game will
drop down to evasion and then caution and then back to normal once each of the
respective timers has fully counted down.
--- RADIO ------------------
Unlike in the first two Metal Gear Solid games Snake must now communicate with
his allies via a field radio (as opposed to the nanotech Codec). The radio
will allow him to dial into specific frequencies to contact certain people.
When a person is reached a picture of them will pop up on screen and Snake and
the character will converse.
The radio can be used to find things out about certain characters, plants,
animals, survival techniques and so on. It is pretty much an information
database at your fingertips.
Different frequencies will contact different people so make sure you are on
the right frequency before transmitting. It is not, however, necessary to
memorize all the frequencies by yourself. There is a small options screen
below the main interface where you can select a previously used frequency so
that you don't have to remember it or constantly dial it in.
There are also some special frequencies in the game that will open various
doors or do other things for you. Some might cancel an alert mode, some might
play some elevator music.

* RANDOM TRIVIA *
When you are talking to someone over the radio you will be able to see a few
different pictures of them as well as a small dossier. Just use the d-pad to
scroll through all of this and find what you are looking for. Note that you
can only do this while talking to the person not at any other time.
--- CURE SYSTEM ------------------
Face it, you're bound to get shot or take a few hits at some point in this
game. Thankfully Metal Gear Solid 3 implements a nifty new system for you to
take action and heal yourself. You can extract bullets, wrap wounds, set
bones, and use an anti-venom serum in case you are bitten by one of the snakes
in the game. How can you do this? Well read on...

--- DIFFICULTY MODES ------------------
For those of you non-hardcore (or hardcore) gamers out there, Metal Gear
Solid 3: Snake Eater features five different difficulty modes for you to
test your skillz on.
You will be asked to select a difficulty mode whenever you start a new game,
or continue a game that has been fully completed. You will be presented with
four or five options depending upon whether or not you have already beaten
the game. If this is your first play through you will only have Very Easy,
Easy, Normal, and Hard available. If you are playing through a second time
then you will be presented with all of the options: Very Easy, Easy, Normal,
Hard, and Extreme available for your pleasure... or displeasure.
Please note that you CANNOT change the difficulty of your game. If you want
to play on a new difficulty you must start a new file.
* Very Easy * I must say that this is very, very easy. Guards can't hear
much of anything, they are nearly blind, they die easily, there is far less
of them, and they are quite unintelligent. The bosses pretty much fall under
the same category. They take a lot of damage from you and do little to you.
If you leave an area with the alarm hooting it will be turned off when you
enter another. Cautions and alerts last for a very short time. This
difficulty is not difficult at all.
* Easy * A little bit tougher than Very Easy but it is still very
unchallenging. Guards can see a little bit further, hear better, and so on.
Once gain in this difficulty the alarm will be reset upon entering a new area.
Everything is just slightly harder but overall it is still pretty damned easy.
* Normal * This is where you should start if Snake Eater is your first
Metal Gear Solid game. Everything is pretty well balanced here for any
player. It isn't too hard and it isn't easy either. Guards can see somewhat
well and hear better than the lower difficulties. If you have an alert in one
area and enter another it will stay. This is also the difficulty the
walkthrough section is based upon.
* Hard * For those of you who are hardcore Metal Gear Solid fans. This is
the difficulty I played through on my first time through the game. There
seems to be a big jump in difficulty between Normal and Hard. The bosses do
much more damage and you do less to them. Guards work the same way. There
are many more guards, they can see, hear, and make better decisions. This is
also for people who are looking for a challenge but not an incredibly hard
one. This is also the difficulty the walkthrough section is based upon.
* Extreme * This is a smashing difficulty level. "Smashing" as in it will
induce wild fits of rage that will send you smashing everything in sight. This
mode is incredibly realistic. Three shots from a guard and you are dead, if
you are in their line of sight across a large room they will spot you easily,
they have excellent hearing, they aren't complete dumbasses when it comes to
capturing you, and there are many more guards in each room. Bosses deal out
one hit kills or something very close to that. In other words: this is only
for the possessed or insane.
The difficulty levels differ in these ways,
- The amount of damage done when falling from a high distance
- duration of stamina gauge and grip gauge
- eyesight of guards
- hearing ability of guards
- intelligence of guards
- length of caution mode/evasion/alert mode
- damage done by bosses/guards
- damage you do to bosses/guards
- amount of time guards stay knocked out/tranquilized
- number of assault team members
- accuracy of guards
- how much cold exposure for your character to catch a cold
- availability of items and ammo
- amount of trembling when sniping
- tranquilizer effect time
- stamina restored when eating
- Your backpack storage space

[02ACTN]
--- BASIC MOVEMENT ------------------
I probably don't have to explain this but I guarantee that if I don't I will
get an e-mail asking about this. Whenever you want to move your character
around in this game you must use the left analog stick or the directional pad.
The direction of the stick or pad will correspond to the on-screen movement
of the character
--- STAND / PRONE ------------------
There is a very small change in this system from other MGS games. In this
game you can hold down the X button while standing and Snake will go straight
to the prone position. Tapping it (like usual) will just bring Snake to a
crouching position. If you want to go from prone to a standing position hold
down X instead of tapping it and Snake will stand up immediately.
--- FIRST PERSON VIEW ATTACK ------------------
This allows you to attack enemies while in the first person view. This makes
shooting at far away a lot easier. You can shoot handguns, assault
rifles, use the survival knife, and use fist attacks with the first person
view.
--- CORNER MODE ------------------
Flatten yourself against the wall near a corner to enter Corner View. This
will allow you to see things that are behind the corner without exposing
yourself to the enemy.
--- CLIMBING OBJECTS ------------------
Press the action button in front of any waist high object to climb on top of
it. Some objects Snake will automatically climb onto if they are low enough
to the ground. Such as the bombed out floors in Rassvet.
--- ROLL FORWARDS ------------------
Rolling is essentially a forward diving somersault (not a backflip). The
rolling maneuver can be used for several different things. It can be used as
a dodging maneuver (trying to avoid gunshots or otherwise). It can be used to
move silently over noisy metal grates, this way is faster than walking so it
is the preferential way to go over them. Or it can be used to knock over
enemy attackers or unsuspecting guards.
Personally, I use the rolling maneuver to tackle sentries and move them out of
my way. This is good because once they have been hit they will be very, very
disoriented for a while, giving you ample time to do your dirty work. Be
aware though that if you do knock somebody over they will attack you or call
for backup if you are in the general area. Make sure you deal with them once
you knock them over.
--- DRAGGING ENEMIES ------------------
Once you have a guard in a chokehold you may not wish to immediately dispose
of him. Perhaps you wish to drag him to another spot or something like that.
If that is the case then just keep holding down CIRCLE and move along with the
Analog Stick. Snake will walk backwards slowly and drag the guard along with
him. Once you have him in whichever place you want you may do whatever devious
things you have in mind.
Once you have killed a guard in whatever manner you choose he will be lying on
the ground in plain sight (most of the time). To avoid them danged alert
modes or caution modes you will have to hide the body somewhere where it will
not be found easily. To do this simply walk up to any deceased guard with no
weapon equipped, press SQUARE, and hold it. Once you have done that you may
drag him wherever you wish.
--- HANGING ------------------
If you want to hang from a tree branch just walk out along the top of the
branch and press the Action button to hang down. When you are hanging you can
press the directional buttons to move along the branch or use R2 and L2. Drop
down by pressing X. If you want to shoot at guards while hanging from a branch
then just go into FPV and push the weapon button to draw a weapon. Just shoot
normally once you are in FPV.
You can also hang from the rope bridge and a few rock ledges but you cannot
shoot from these.
--- CHOKEHOLD ------------------
Without your weapon equipped come up behind a guard and press the CIRCLE
button. Your character will now grab him around the neck to temporarily
immobilize him. Once he is in the choke hold you can either snap his neck,
knock him out, or leave him. To snap his neck rapidly press the weapon button
to snap his neck, you will hear a quite distinct, and disturbingly pleasing,
"SNAP!" If you prefer not to take his life you can press the CIRCLE button
about 9 or ten times to cause him to lose consciousness.
--- PEEK AROUND CORNER ------------------
When in corner view use the shoulder buttons L2 and R2 to peek around the
corner to get a better view of the area. You can use the right analog stick
now to move the camera around to see more detail.
--- STEP SIDEWAYS ------------------
While in FPV you can use the shoulder buttons L2 and R2 to strafe or step
sideways in either direction. This will allow you hide behind corners and
step out quickly to shoot in the First Person.
--- KNOCKING ------------------
This is one of the best distractions you can use in this game. Knocking is
basically what it says. It is just a knock on a surface to create a noise
that will attract the attention of the enemy. Knocking is done when your
character is leaning against a wall or some other flat surface and you press
CIRCLE (the CQC button) and Snake will rap his fist on the wall. This will
attract the attention of any nearby guard and he will come to investigate the
noise. This will give you a chance to slip into the shadows and strike from
a place of your choosing while he stands in the open looking around. If
taking the guard out is not your intention then you can use this to draw him
out of your way so that you can proceed unheeded to wherever you are going.
--- TACTICAL RELOAD ------------------
This is an essential technique to master for this game. Quick change is
essentially where you can very quickly switch between two weapons or items
(or from a weapon to no weapon quickly). A quick-change is done by quickly
tapping down on either the L2 or R2 buttons.
Any quick change using a magazine type weapon will automatically reload the
magazine with all the bullets inserted so that you don't have to waste time
changing magazines. Just quickly tap down on the R2 button twice in a row and
you will have done it.
--- JUMP-OUT SHOT ------------------
You have been spotted by the enemy and are now engaged in a high intensity
shootout with an attack team. You are bleeding badly and in need of help.
Situation sound familiar?
What you would need to use here is a jump out shot. Get behind a box or
another hard surface such as a wall and move to the corner. With a weapon
equipped press the weapon button and Snake will quickly jump out fire a
shot and get back behind the wall. This method of shooting is also accurate.
When Snake jumps out he will usually hit an enemy on the first shot, and
sometimes in a vital area such as the groin or head.
If you wish to fire multiple shots you will have to rapidly press the weapon
button once Snake is out in the open or else he will just go back to hiding.
--- SHAKE-OUT ITEM ------------------
This is done when you have either knocked out a guard or killed him in any
way. The guard will be lying on the ground so if you wish you can have Snake
pick him up. If you do pick him up you can either drag him around or shake
down his body for items and ammunition. To shake a guard down all you have
to do is pick him up and repeatedly drop him until things start to fall out
from his person. He will drop any number of items and ammunition and the
amount that he drops will depend on the difficulty level that you are playing
on.
--- DESTROY RADIO ------------------
With any gun you can shoot a guards radio and this will permanently disable it
and he will no longer be able to communicate via radio. When a guard has
discovered you can shoot his radio while he is making the report or before
he does, giving you more time to get away. You can only do this in FPV.
--- CLIMBING LADDERS ------------------
Ladders, well... there isn't much to say about them. There are very few in
the game and they are few and far in-between. The only explanation that is
needed is that they transport you either straight up or straight down. To get
on a ladder just go up to it, push the action button, and then use the D-Pad
or the Analog Stick to move up and down. You can't fall off of a ladder so
don't worry about that, you will stay on until you either reach the top or
bottom of it.
--- DODGING BULLETS ------------------
This is somewhat useless but if you can pull it off then you will be able to
save yourself some health. Basically what this involves is a gunfight (you
have to be shot at to dodge bullets) and you in FPV. When a guard shoots at
you it may be possible to move to the side with the R2 and L2 buttons or to
duck and evade the bullets. It isn't completely foolproof by any means but it
does work on occasion so it is worth a try.
--- BOOKS ------------------
These little pieces of literature can be placed on the ground to attract the
undivided attention of the enemy. These graphic novels contain pictures of
scantily clad women and other interesting images such as that. If an
unsuspecting guard happens to stumble upon your little stash then he will
instantly drop to his knees and begin to browse through it, ignoring all of
his important duties. All that you have to do is lay it in his path or within
his sight range, when he sees it he will go over to investigate and then do
what I just described. Very useful and humorous to use.
--- CARDBOARD BOXES ------------------
I hope you have heard at least something about this by now. If you haven't
heard anything about this then I don't know what to say except to listen up!
The first game to implement this item was Metal Gear on the MSX way back in
1987. Each game has had it's own versions of the cardboard box and each game
uses it differently. To my relief I have discovered that Metal Gear Solid 3
implements this well-loved box very well.
Using a box is very simple. All you have to do is equip it and Snake will
immediately hide inside, out of view from enemy sentries. If the enemy has
not seen you get into the box or you are not sitting right in the middle of
their patrol route then they will not come over to investigate. However if
they are in an Alert mode they will most likely pick up the box to see what
is inside it. They_aren't_complete_dumbasses.
In Snake Eater there are three different boxes. Each serves the same purpose,
to hide from the enemy. Just make sure you are using it in a logical place
hence, don't use it out in the middle of the jungle. Use it indoors,
preferably next to some other boxes.
--- LOCKERS ------------------
If you remember back to MGS2 one of the big attention grabbers of the gameplay
was that you could open up and access a locker in the game to either hide
yourself or inconspicuously toss a guard into them. Well, lucky for you this
has been implemented into Snake Eater as well.
At different places in the game there are lockers that the enemy personnel use
to store various items of equipment and materials. To open one up all you
have to do is stand in front of it, try and get close, and press the Action
Button. Snake will then open up the locker. Depending upon what difficulty
you are on you may or may not find an item or some ammunition in there.
If you want to hide inside the locker all you have to do is run Snake all the
way into the locker and he will turn around, shut the door, and then he will
be completely hidden from view. This is mainly useful during clearings, alert
modes, or any other kind of situation where you have got a guard(s) looking
for you.
There are a few things you can do inside a locker despite the low
maneuverability room. The majority of them are taken up by a few different
ways to look out of the little vent in the top of the locker. If you want to
see what is to the right or left of the vent then you can just press and hold
either R2 or L2 to look right or left, respectively. If you want to see what
is to the bottom of the vent then you should press both buttons together at
the same time. Pressing the R1 button will have Snake move his face up to the
vent itself and peer out. Doing this will give you a much better view of the
surrounding area. You can also duck down inside a locker, but I really do not
see any point at all to this.
To drag a body into a locker you must have the locker door open and a body
closely. Drag the body over to the locker and then drop it. Open the locker,
and drag the body inside it as far as you can. Snake will then stand the body
up in the locker and shut the door. Now the body is safely out of sight of
any patrolling guards. Please note that an unconscious guard will never ever
wake up once he is stuffed into a locker.
If you are in dire need of a cover spot during a firefight a locker door can
be used to provide this. Simply open the door and move behind it. This will
only provide a brief moment of cover until it is blown away by the enemy
attackers. It is only a thin piece of metal so don't rely on it too much.
Now for the fun stuff. If you encounter a locked locker there are two things
you can do. The first is to move on and ignore it but that is not helpful to
you in any way so I suggest you move to the second option. The second option
is to break open the locker by knocking off the door. You can do this several
ways: punching/kicking, shooting the hinges, or blowing it off with C4. I
suggest that you do the first option since it uses less ammo and is
considerably less noisy. Once the door has been blown off the door will fall
(or to your misfortune it may fall into the locker, in which case it is still
inaccessible) away and its contents will be revealed. On a side note, make
sure you are not standing in front of the door when it falls or else Snake
will get knocked to the ground by it.

[02CQCT]
In actual battle, it is used in the jungle, bushes, and indoors when
you cannot use a gun. It is also used when terrorists with hostages
are in a facility or an airplane. The technique has been developed for
when you have to fight multiple enemies that are very close to you, or
when you don't know from where you will be attacked. It is a total
combat technique, studied by actual special forces, used when you are
close to enemies and you have to be able to fight with your bare hands,
knife, and gun accordingly.
- Motosada Mori, MGS3 Military Advisor
In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater there is an implemented combat system that
allows the player to engage an enemy or multiple enemies in a series of
movements that will disarm the opponent as well as defend the player from
damage. Used correctly, this will be most useful tool when you stray too
close to an enemy patrol or find yourself surrounded by bad guys. From here
on out Close Quarters Combat will be referred to as CQC.
CQC Capable Weapons
---------------------
Bare Hands
Survival Knife
M1911A1
MK-22
In Metal Gear Solid 3 the above weapons can be used during CQC. Usually you
will want to go with a combination of survival knife + a handgun. You can
also go with the knife + bare hands (nothing else equipped) if that suits your
fancy.
CQC Progression
-----------------
As you get your victim into various stages and positions during CQC you will
be able to perform a certain number of movements and as you do more of them
your options will become more and more limited. See the below explanation to
see how this works.
* The first thing that you have to do is either sneak up to an enemy by
using the stalking mode or be in some other circumstance as long as you
are close to the guard that you wish to engage.
Now you can do one of two things.
A - Press the Circle button along with the directional stick to knock your
enemy to the ground. There are two things that you do in this position.
1. Interrogate him with the knife.
2. Knock him out or dispose of him in some other fashion.
B - Press and hold the Circle button to grab the enemy. Now you have a few
options. Available options : 1, 2, 3, 4.
1. Threaten him with your knife. To do this you must apply pressure
to the L3 button. if you release the pressure on the button the
guard will stop talking. To get him talking again just re-apply
pressure to the L3 button.
