Version .005 - Revised with new unlockables and move lists Version .001 - Created on 3.20.2005 ------------------------ Section I - Introduction ------------------------ I have never written a FAQ before nor I have written anything that, I guess, has been proved helpful to mankind. Anyhoo, let's get started shall we? Just a note, this is for the PS2 version. All the things should be the same in the Gamecube version, except that the button mappings will be different. If anyone has info on that, that'd be super! Thanks! Oh, and a special note: my Japanese is equivalent of a 4-year old Japanese child. I do, however, have a dictionary and I can sort of read it. I've also played around with it, so things should be fine. The One Piece Grand Battle! Rush game plays very much like Powerstone. It's a fully navigatable 3-d environment. The levels are sometimes multi-leveled as in they have different elevations. Nothing drastic like a Donkey Kong level, but have variety. I've never played any of the other GB games, so I'm very impressed with this one. --------------------- Section II - Controls --------------------- Key: ^ - Triangle O - Circle Sq - Square X - X ( ) - Hold Movement: Left Analog - Move Your Character Buttons: ^ - Jump (tap twice for double jump) X - Weak Attack O - Strong Attack Sq - Grab (opponent/items) X+O - Guard Breaker Blocking: R1 or R2 - Block Special Moves: (refer to character section for info for specifics) (L1 or L2) and then a two button combo. Super Move: (refer to character section for info) (L1 or L2) and then a three button combo. NOTE: The less life you have, the more damage your Super Move will do. However, if you have more life than your opponent, the damage/animation will get cut short. So if you're totally dying, you'll more likely do your entire Super Move. Combo Strings: You can stop anywhere in the combo. You don't have to complete it to score damage or anything. Sometimes I've noved that you're able to string different combos together (that aren't listed), but these are just the basics and applicable to every character. X ---> X ---> X | --> O X+O ---> O O ---> O ---> O | | | --> X | --> X Further Combo Strings: The only real thing I've learned is that if you have a combo that launches the opponent into the air, you can also time a (R1 or R2) + O to grab them while they fall. It does very little extra damage, but extra damage is still extra damage. Block Moves: These moves are performed when you're holding block down. More specifically, using the weak attack version will do a ground attack and the strong attack version will do a counter-air move. These are mostly long range moves. Some characters throw projectiles. Example: Luffy's ground attack punches horizontally to a distance and Luffy's counter-air move kicks at a 45 degree angle into the air. (R1 or R2) + X - ground move (R1 or R2) + O - counter-air move Counter Move: Some characters (Zoro, for example) have a move that a counter move in which when attacked while in this stance, they counter it and do a counterattack. You'll have to experiment to get the timing down right. Other characters' counter move will launch away an opponent to create breathing room (Luffy puffs up and knocks away anyone near him). (R1 or R2) + X+O - counter move Jumping Attacks: Your basic jumping attacks. Like the block moves, the weak attack will do an air attack (so you can attack someone else in the air) and the strong attack will be directed downwards. ^ ---> X - air attack ^ ---> O - air based ground attack ^ ---> X+O - ground launch (think of Dhalsim's spear from the air) Throwing: When your close to your opponent, you can do a throw. These typically don't do too much damage, but can be stategically used by cliff edges to throw an opponent off. Sq - throw (#1) Left analog stick (running) + Sq - throw (#2) Ally Call: So, you can call an ally in the middle of the fight to help you. The ally will run around/shoot things at your opponent and score extra damage for you. (L1 or L2) --> Sq --> Sq - Call Ally Breaking Your Fall: Instead of falling straight on your face after you get hit by a strong attack, tap jump while in mid-air to turn back to your normal oritentation and run. You know, so you can setup your next attack. Jumping On Your Opponent: Jump on your opponent and they drop fruit, which also decreases their own super bar. Hooray! Fast Fall: To confuse your opponent and such, hit the block button when you're in the air. You don't do a slow decent but rather fall very quickly to the ground. A great tactic... I think they have this in Super Smash Bros. Melee. ----------------- Section V - Items ----------------- These are the items you get when you smash open boxes or treasure chests. These help out your game and can actually determine who wins or not. Anyhoo, let's get crackin'. Treasure Chests: Shield - This item here raises your defense. Also, when you get hit, you don't seem to fly back or fall down, so you can keep charging forward. It seems to slow you down. Sword - This item increases your attack, but you can no longer block with this thing powering you up. Blue Diamond - This item allows you to do a Super Move, even if you don't have two green spheres. Also, it will always do the full length, most damage version of the Super. Once you try the super, however, it'll go away so you've only got one chance. Shoes - These shoes make you move a lot faster. Especially good if you character's very slow, like Bon Clay. Meat - This will increase your super bar by one. Fruit - These up your super bars. Boxes: Bomb - Hit these and they explode. Throw them and they explode on contact, that is to say your opponent doesn't catch it. Does damage. Oil Can - Hit these and you become slippery. You'll begin to slide, which might be a good thing too because you can slide and attack at the same time. Fire Pot - Sort of like the bomb, except that you can break it sometimes and not get burned yourself. Green Afro Guy (I forget his name) - Hit him and he'll begin to shoot water bubbles the direction he's facing. You can also pick him up and press O to shoot manually. Magnetic Pointer - Breaking this will give powerup all your super bars to their max. Hooray for supers! Fruit - These up your super bars. -------------------------- Section VI - Battle System -------------------------- There are different things that happen when you're actually fighting people. Basically, a few things you'll have to look out for when you're fighting. 1. Cliffs/Edges Be careful of these. Falling off into water or off a cliff will cause you damage. The only thing I've noticed is that when Arlong goes into water, he doesn't lose life. 2. Boxes/Treasure Chests Break these open or pick them up and throw them at your opponent. Inside these are fruits and powerups. The fruits will increase your Super Bar (the green thing). Boxes usually provide things you can use against your opponent (poison mushroom, fire pot, etc.). Treasure chests usually provide powerups (meat, attack +up, etc.). 3. Stage People In the arenas and the people on outside will interact with you guys as the battle rages. Sometimes they will attack you if attacked or some will, actually, I've only had them hit me. So, be careful of that. It's silly to lose that way. 4. Your Life Bar Um, make sure this doesn't go all the way down. 4. Your Super Bar There's a green bar underneath your life bar with two spheres. Everytime you get a sphere, that constitutes as one full bar. You can get a max of three (two spheres and a full bar). Each special move takes one sphere and your super move takes two. You can only get this by eating fruit. --------------------------- Section VII - Training Mode --------------------------- This is where you spend the time learn all the differnt combos for the different characters in the game. Aside from that, however, there's more to the training mode. Why would you spend your precious time in this mode at all? Let me explain here. There's a mini-game (sort of) built into the training mode. To play it, you just go and destroy the pillars as quickly as possible. When all eight pillars have fallen, then you have completed the stage. If you "complete" the training stage with all 19 characters, then you will unlock the stage. Complete the move set for any of the Straw Hat Pirates and you will unlock their third costume (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Usopp, Chopper, Nico Robin). ------------------------------ Section VIII - Davy Back Games ------------------------------ These are essentially the mini-games in One Piece. It's based on the storyline. I won't go into it because I don't want to do the "spoiler" thing. Just, well, pretend that it has to do with nothing. You pick three characters to use in these games. The order of which the games appear are random. The first option allows you to play these games. I believe the second option allows you to play with other human players. The six gray boxes are the mini-games and will be available to play when you complete them a certain number of times. In between each game (there are three, that's why you chose three characters), you will be given an option. If you won, then you get to select an ally/support character to add to your team. If you lost the prior mini-game, you select an ally/support character to give to Foxy's team. Here are the games and how to play them: Boxes: This is much like the bonus round for the Event Battle except that you have 300 boxes to destroy instead. I'd recommend someone that can do wide sweeps since you can clear boxes faster this way. Snow Level: This level is where you have to clear the snow as fast as possible. The normal way to do this is to grab the garbage can and throw it at the snow. He'll eat the snow and eventually spit some out, in which you should pick up that snowball and throw it off the roof. Once you get Enrel or Aokiji, however, it's a lot easier. Enrel's (R1 or R2) + X is very useful here and Aokiji's (R1 or R2) + (X + O) is SUPER effective. I beat it in four seconds with that. Don Crick: This level is basically fighting Don Crick, who has a shield powerup, and his health bar is invisible. Just beat him up as fast as you can. Simple as that. Ball/Goals: Each team has a hoop and you have to pick up the green afro guy and throw him into the opposing side's goal. Everytime you do that you score 1 point. Everytime you knock your opponent into that goal, you get 5 (I believe). Highest score wins. Boats: There are five people who are constantly shooting bombs at your ship. Knock them out (there's a timer above their heads) as fast as you can. If you continue to do this, your ship will win. They drop fruit, so it makes it possible to use an ally/support character here. Screwdriver: This is a simple 1-on-1 match, but there's some sort of change. Maybe you guys will constantly have the Oil Can powerup on you or your normal jump is equivalent to the double jump. Just beat your opponent. Foxy Battle: This is usually the last stage you play. You have to fight Foxy. Just know that he has two lifebars. When he's on his second lifebar, he will always have a full power bar, so be careful of his specials. Winning: Everytime you win two or more of these mini-games, you're allowed to choose a character from a list of three. The character you choose will unlock their voice in the Announcer section in the Options. ---------------------------------------------- Section IX - Character List/Moves (incomplete) ---------------------------------------------- Note: I can't read all the special moves, so I'll just list their button combos. This section will eventually have more information... I just haven't gotten to it yet. This will include ally listings, how the character plays, etc. Luffy ----- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> X Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> X Luffy (Afro ver.) ----------------- Special Moves (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> X Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> X Rorona Zoro ----------- Special Moves (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> ^ Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> Sq Nami ---- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> ^ Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> X Usopp ----- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> ^ (I don't know much about this move) Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> Sq Sanji ----- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> O Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> ^ Chopper ------- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> ^ Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> ^ Nico Robin ---------- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> X Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> X Buggy ----- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> X (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> O Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> X Captain Kuro ------------ Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> O Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> Sq Don Crick --------- Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> ^ Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> X Arlong ------ Special Moves: (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> Sq (L1 or L2) ---> X ---> ^ Super Move: (L1 or L2) ---> O --> O --> ^ Col. Smoke in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Luffy on Normal. Unlock Buggy in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Zoro on Normal. Unlock Don Crick in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Sanji on Normal. Unlock Arlong in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Nami on Normal. Unlock Captain Kuro in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Usopp on Normal. Unlock Bon Clay in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Chopper on Normal. Unlock Croccidile in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Nico Robin on Normal. Unlock Foxy in Event Mode: Beat Event Mode with Chopper twice. Super Hard Mode: Beat Event Mode on Hard with 10+ characters. Unlock Enel: Ok, I actually didn't know what I did. I just kept playing the game with different characters on Hard mode. Eventually I got a screen with his picture on it. When you get that, play a Tournament and you'll notice he replaces one of the characters on the tournament tree. Beat him there and he's unlocked. Unlock Aokiji: After unlocking Enel, play Event Battle with Luffy (this is done easiest with Easy). Your last boss will be Aokiji. Grab a blue diamond and beat him with your Super Move. I did it when I had full super bars, however. This will unlock Aokiji. Unlock Shanks: After unlocking Aokiji, play Event Battle with Luffy on Super Hard mode and fight Shanks at the end. Defeat him to unlock him. Unlock Mihawk: After unlocking Shanks, play Event Battle with Zoro on Super Hard mode. When fighting Mihawk, you must be hit with his Super Move. It's all right if you die. As long as you get by it, feel free to use a continue and waste his clean-cut face all over the place. You'll unlock him. Warning, his Super Move is really crappy and is uni-directional, so make sure you're in his path to get hit by it. Unlock Enel's Stage: Beat Event Mode with Enel. Unlock Training Stage: After you've unlocked every character, use each character to complete the training stage. To complete the training stage, you must destroy all the pillars. Unlock Different Modes of AI in Training Mode: Everytime two times you destroy the pillars in the Training mode, a new AI mode unlocks. Note, you must use different characters. So, you can't just use Luffy for 16 times in a row. Each character will eventually be used to do this. Play Data: Beat Event Mode with a character in Extra Hard mode and you get stats for your battle. Theatre Movies: Everytime you beat Event Mode with a character, you get that ending movie (as short as it is) in the Theatre mode. Gallery: Evrytime you beat Event Mode with a character, their image library opens up in the gallery. Unlocking Announcer Voices: Every so often when you beat Event Battle on Super Hard, a new voice will unlock. However, if you beat it with Don Crick, however, you won't necessarily unlock Don Crick's voice. Every time you complete (win) a set of Davy Back games, you're allowed to choose from a list of characters at the end. The character you choose will have their voice unlocked in the announcer's option (these are for support characters only). Unlocking the Last Two Main Character Voices: How I did it was as soon as you get all the cards, you get main voice #20, which is the entire Straw Hat Pirates gang. After you get all of the support characters voices as well as up to #20 in main character voices, play Davy Back games one more time and win. This will unlock the last voice: Zoro + Sanji. Alternate Costumes: Beat Event Mode with Mihawk on Hard and complete all the movesets for the Straw Hat Pirates in training mode to unlock all of their third costumes (Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Usopp, Nico Robin, Sanji and Nami). Alternate Opening Screen: Beat Event Mode with Mihawk on Hard and the "press start" screen will be different. It'll have all of the characters on it in a broken mirror type fashion. Unlock BMG Select: Beat Event Mode with Mihawk on Hard and the BMG Select becomes available in the Treasures section. Cards: Everytime you win a match, you get three new cards. There are apparently 1173 cards to collect. Man, I'd love to play this card game. Voice Collection: When you beat Event Mode with a character, their Voice Collection becomes unlocked in the Treasures mode, listed under their character. Item Gallery: Complete all of the moves in Training mode with a character (just refer to the Move List after you pause) and all the items they carry/use will be presented here for your viewing. --------------------------------------- Section XI - Credits and Special Thanks --------------------------------------- Credits and Special Thanks: Thanks usagent76, Genroh and bladearm for tips on how to unlock those characters! You guys/girls are super and thanks for the message board posts. Very very helpful! Thanks Darshu151 for helping me out with the alternate costume unlock update! Oh, and the awesomeness that is One Piece. Sho nuff. |
