Introduction ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Known to gamers in North America and Europe as Resident Evil, the Biohazard series, as named in Japan, is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary release now in 2006 with the release of Biohazard Deadly Silence for the Nintendo DS. But this isn't the first time Capcom celebrates an anniversary for their series, for if there is a 10th Anniversary, there's got to be a 5th Anniversary. Because the item is so rare, and only officially available in Japan, I've written this FAQ so people who don't have this package can read up on what it's about. This FAQ can currently be hosted on these sites, plus a few others I won't bother mentioning. www.gamefaqs.com (GameFAQs) www.gamespot.com (GameSpot, via GameFAQs) faqs.ign.com (IGN FAQs) www.neoseeker.com (NeoSeeker) www.residentevilfan.com (Resident Evil Fan) I, the author of this FAQ, do not own the rights related to Biohazard or Resident Evil, Capcom does. I do, however, own the rights of this FAQ. So please do not steal anything from this FAQ. You're free to use this as a basis for any document you right, however you must cite me as a source. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Version Updates ----------------------------------------------------------------------- January 1, 2006 Happy New Year! I decided to update this document because it's been almost four years ever since I gave it an update. And it wasn't written to my present writing standards, either. So I've completely overhauled the FAQ, giving it a cleaner format, more descriptive paragraphs and overall, something that flies well in 2006. Enjoy the New Year everyone! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Biohazard 5th Anniversary: Nightmare Returns ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Biohazard 5th Anniversary Special Package "Nightmare Returns" Platform: PlayStation (PSone), PlayStation 2, DVD Region: Japan (NTSC-J, Region 2) Price: 28,000 Yen Publisher: Capcom Japan Release Date: March 22, 2001 Contains: Biohazard Capcom celebrated the 5th Anniversary of Biohazard in Japan on March 22, 2001. Back then, the series was dominantly a PlayStation series although at that point the whole main series up to that time period (Biohazard, Biohazard 2, Biohazard 3, CODE: Veronica) was also available on Sega systems as well, and Biohazard 2 made it to the Nintendo 64 in late 1999 (early 2000 for Japan). They celebrated by releasing a special briefcase for Japanese gamers. The briefcase is officially titled the "Biohazard 5th Anniversary Special Package "Nightmare Returns". It was limited to 10,000 units only (in comparison to the million selling PlayStation installments and the modern installments that sell hundreds of thousands). It was also pretty expensive, retailing at 28,000 Japanese Yen, which in 2001 was around $240 USD. It's expensive for a reason. It contains four videogames, a demo disc, a DVD disc, a CD case, and a few other trinkets including the briefcase itself. Nowadays, you can only find it on Ebay every so often for a few hundred dollars, so if you're that dedicated, go for it. I bought it in 2002, a day after the biohazard remake for the GameCube was out. The official Japanese website of the 5th Anniversary Package can be found here: http://www.capcom.co.jp/bio5th/ So, let's get on with the details of the package itself. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Games Included ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The package contained these following games: 1. Biohazard (PSone) 2. Biohazard 2: Dual Shock Version (PSone) 3. Biohazard 3: Last Escape (PSone) 4. Biohazard CODE: Veronica Kanzenban (PS2) 5. Devil May Cry Trial Edition (PS2) The PSone games were contained in a special CD case (described below). They came with specially made instruction booklets made of durable, high quality paper, but they were slightly different from the normal editions released previously. Biohazard CODE: Veronica Kanzenban was included in the case a little differently. Capcom took the normal release of that game (released on the same day, in fact) and threw it into the case. The Devil May Cry Trial Edition was likewise included within the normal and package releases of CODE: Veronica Kanzenban. ======================================================================= A. Biohazard ======================================================================= Name: Biohazard Known in the West as: Resident Evil Platform: PlayStation (PSone) Publisher: Capcom Japan Original Release Date: March 22, 1996 Disc Number: 1 / 4 The very original Biohazard release, and not the subsequent Director's Cut and Director's Cut Dual Shock Versions, was included in the package. Why? It makes a lot of sense because it's the 5th Anniversary of this particular release that's being celebrated. The disc is similar to the original release, being red in color, but contains the name "Disc 1" and the Biohazard 5th Anniversary logo on it. Biohazard was also released on the PC and Sega Saturn. There's a full- fledged remake on the GameCube, and a handheld port is coming to the DS as part of Biohazard's 10th anniversary. ======================================================================= B. Biohazard 2: Dual Shock Version ======================================================================= Name: Biohazard 2: Dual Shock Version Known in the West as: Resident Evil 2: Dual Shock Edition Platform: PlayStation (PSone) Publisher: Capcom Japan Original Release Date: August 6, 1998 Disc Number: 2 / 4 (Leon Edition) 3 / 4 (Claire Edition) This is the Dual Shock release of Biohazard 2, which was released in summer 1998. It was released to take advantage of the PSone's analog sticks, but it also contained a new minigame, Extreme Battle Mode. Interestingly enough, Leon and Claire's discs are labeled as Discs 2 and 3 respectively, which gives the impression that the PSone Biohazard series is a four disc game. Like the original Dual Shock release, the disc art contained Leon and Claire on it, Leon's disc being blue and Claire's disc being red. The discs contain the 5th Anniversary logo. Biohazard 2 was also released on the PC, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and GameCube. ======================================================================= C. Biohazard 3: Last Escape ======================================================================= Name: Biohazard 3: Last Escape Known in the West as: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Platform: PlayStation (PSone) Publisher: Capcom Japan Original Release Date: September 22, 1999 Disc Number: 4 / 4 Since there was only one version of Biohazard 3 on the PlayStation, it's the one that was included in this package. It's disc four of the entire package. The disc art is black with the appropriate 5th Anniversary logo. Biohazard 3: Last Escape was also released on the PC, GameCube and Dreamcast. ======================================================================= D. Biohazard CODE: Veronica Kanzenban w/ Devil May Cry Trial Edition ======================================================================= Name: Biohazard CODE: Veronica Kanzenban Known in the West as: Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X Platform: PlayStation 2 Publisher: Capcom Japan Original Release Date: March 22, 2001 This is the PS2 version of CODE: Veronica. The Japanese name is CODE: Veronica Kanzenban, which translates to CODE: Veronica Complete Edition. It contained new cut-scenes over the original Dreamcast version, featuring Albert Wesker, who as of Resident Evil 4 is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the game's plot. This game came out exactly five years after the original Biohazard. The Dreamcast version of CODE: Veronica Kanzenban was also released on this day, making it, so far, the only multiplatform simultaneous release of a Biohazard title to date. However, Capcom hopes to do a simultaneous release a second time with the upcoming release of Biohazard 5 on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. The game contained a short demo of Devil May Cry. Incidentally, that game ended up outselling this version of CODE: Veronica everywhere (not when combined with the Dreamcast releases, though). Biohazard CODE: Veronica Kanzenban was also released on the Dreamcast and GameCube. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Wesker's Report DVD ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Another incentive for getting the 5th Anniversary Package is Wesker's Report. For the regular editions, it was available with pre-orders of CODE: Veronica Kanzenban (I believe it was both the Dreamcast and PS2 versions, but I can't be 100% sure). However, it was included with the package. Wesker's Report is a narrative by Albert Wesker (hence the name, Wesker's Report). It describes events from the original Biohazard and Biohazard 2, with a little bit of Biohazard 3 covered as well. Beyond describing, it gives events from Wesker's point of view, how he survived to return in CODE: Veronica and his intentions. There's also a lengthy discussion session with the directors/producers of the four Biohazard games released by 2001, which would be Biohazard, Biohazard 2, Biohazard 3 and Biohazard CODE: Veronica. It is called "Director's Hazard" in the DVD. Respectively, they are Shinji Mikami, Hideki Kamiya, Kazuhiro Aoyama, Hiroki KatoÉ and, well, some other guy with glasses whose name I don't know, sorry. I'm also not positive if the third guy is indeed Kazuhiro Aoyama, so someone let me know if it's him or not. Note that the Director's Hazard was removed from the U.S. release of Wesker's Report. There are plenty of Wesker's Report transcripts available on the web, specifically at GameFAQs. Alternatively, check out one of the Plot Analysis guides for more information about them. Unfortunately, I don't think there have been any translations for the Director's Hazard portion of the DVD, though. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Trinkets ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Capcom also included a few extra trinkets in the case to make the package all the more rare and worth it. It includes the case itself, which stores everything as well as a special Biohazard CD case, a ballpoint pen, a dog tag, and a ring. The case is designed after CODE: Veronica's Duralumin Cases. ======================================================================= A. CD Case ======================================================================= The CD case, more like a CD binder really, is the neatest trinket in the set. It holds up to six CDs, four slots officially designated and taken up by the four PlayStation discs from Biohazard, Biohazard 2 and Biohazard 3. There are also two slots, but they're not officially designated toward anything. As of 2006, you could put any combination of discs in there. My personal preference would be to place the PlayStation 2 versions of CODE: Veronica Kanzenban and biohazard 4 in there, although there are people who decided to put both Biohazard Outbreak and Biohazard Outbreak File #2 in those slots to keep with the Raccoon City theme. It's all up to you, though. The case folds into thirds, with each third taken up by two CD slots. The first two columns house the four PlayStation Biohazard discs, while the third column houses the two free discs you can use. The disc case is of a blue color and bears the standard logo of the 5th Anniversary. ======================================================================= B. Dog Tag ======================================================================= The dog tag is hung on with a small bead necklace, and it bears the Biohazard logo as well as the number of your suitcase. If you have an alternative long necklace, then you can wear it around your neck. It's made of a kind of metal or hard aluminum. Since there were 10,000 units of the briefcase produced, you'll get a number ranging from 00001 to 10000. ======================================================================= C. Ballpoint Pen ======================================================================= Made of the same material as the dog tag, the ballpoint pen doesn't write in any fancy ink, but it's heavy and has a cool design, of which the William Birkin eye is the dominant design. The Hawk Emblem from CODE: Veronica Kanzenban is also etched onto the pen. ======================================================================= D. Key Ring ======================================================================= Likewise, the key ring is made of the same material as the ballpoint pen and dog tag. It can hold a few keys, give or take. ======================================================================= E. Finger Ring ======================================================================= A finger ring bearing the William Birkin eye design was also included. Made of the same material as the other trinkets, it'll probably fit most Japanese people, but it didn't fit me. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. The Briefcase Itself ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The briefcase is modeled after CODE: Veronica's Duralumin Case. It has the same locks with the key, and the interior is made of vinyl and leather. There are several compartments that can hold the trinkets, and there is a whole section you can reveal by unzipping the vinyl - it's where you store the CD case and CODE: Veronica Kanzenban DVD case. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Frequently Asked Questions ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Question: Is the 5th Anniversary Package still available? - Answer: On Ebay, it occasionally is still available for fairly high prices. In Japan or any other shop, I highly doubt it. From what I can remember, the package was available in Japan and other shops for about a few months, since the package was pretty expensive. But after almost five years, the chances of finding one are slim to none. Question: What's the Biohazard Collector's Box? - Answer: The Biohazard Collector's Box is something else entirely. Released on August 4, 2003 for 19,800 Yen in Japan only, the Collector's Box was the GameCube's equivalent of a set containing a few Biohazard titles and a few extras. It didn't come in a case, but in quite literally a greenish-blue box that held the GameCube editions of biohazard 0, biohazard, Biohazard 2, Biohazard 3: Last Escape and Biohazard CODE: Veronica Kanzenban. It also contained a simple book with a black cover and plain white paper that had the Japanese transcripts of Wesker's Report and Wesker's Report II. Like the 5th Anniversary Package, this was limited to 10,000 units, but there was nothing special about the games contained in it, nor was there a number you could use to see which of the 10,000 you got. Question: Will you make a FAQ for the Biohazard Collector's Box? - Answer: You might as well just read the above answer again and let that be your FAQ. It's not unique or high key enough to make a FAQ for. Question: Where can I buy the Biohazard Collector's Box? - Answer: It seems to pop up on Ebay less frequently than the briefcase, so you best try some Hong Kong import shops or keep checking back Ebay. Question: Will Capcom release more Biohazard sets in the future? - Answer: Maybe. The 10th Anniversary is this year, 2006, so Capcom may get creative and do another set for the PS2, or wait until Biohazard 5 hits the PS3. Question: Will Capcom ever do one of these nifty sets for the U.S. or Europe? - Answer: Doubt it. The Japanese place far more emphasis on package design than Americans do. It's easy to tell if you own every Resident Evil and Biohazard game and see the strong differences in packages and presentation. Email me with more questions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Conclusion ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope you found this guide useful, and free of errors. I'm glad I got to redo this, because as a guide, it was really, sorely lacking, written poorly, ill-formatted and overall, lagged behind as the standards of FAQ writing went up. Special thanks to: - Friends and family. Without my family I wouldn't have this set. - CJayC for hosting this on GameFAQs. - Capcom for creating this awesome set. - You, the reader, for reading this.
