The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night Q&A

I have made it past where you get your first feather. My problem is even if i save the game after killings all the dogs and going further it always takes me back to where i have to fight the dogs again. Pleases help

Whats the point? I know that if you beat them you unlock dark spyro.. But whats the point of unlocking the chronicler and the other dragons when you can't even use them?
