The thing actually leads us back to the start of the 80's when John Carpenter made a film called "The Thing". Set in the antarctic it had an indepth storyline about an alien being and the struggle of a science research team to survive not only the thing but also the harsh enviroments of the cold north. The film ended with the 2 surviving characters sitting in the cold after they dispose of the BIG thing. They await a rescue team to come and save them. This is where the game takes us to, we will be controlling captain Blake who is the leader of a rescue team sent in to investigate on the recent happenings of the area and the loss of contact with the previous research team. Now to the gamey-parts, the game will take you through several of the movie locations especially in the first two levels, where you will be exploring through the ruined buildings of the american research center where the original incident happens. Along the way you will also be able to hear recordings from Mr mcready himself, and to spoil the game a little bit for you, he also makes a guest appearance in the very finale of the game to help you out in the final battle. Other then sporting very beautifully dark rendered graphics this game also has a good fear factor to it and more then once you'll find yourself looking back just to make sure that your partners are actually your partners and not those hideous things, thats another thing about this game, you dont really know who's human and who's been taken over by the aliens. Your partners will suddenly transform right in front of you in a most gruesome fashion. Well thats enough information about the game, now go find the rest by playing the game yourself. You can visit the official the thing website at www.thethinggames.com !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* GAME OVERVIEW !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* gmov Knowing who can trust is the difference between living and dying. Dropped into the frozen wasteland of Antartica you are the leader of a military rescue team sent to investigate the mysterious disappearence of the American scientists expedition team. in the punishing wind and cold of ANtartica you and your team finds a strange, shape shifting alien lifeform that asumes the appearence of the people it kills. This monster is dificult to see, hard to kill and almost impossible to evade. And when you see it its often too late. Try to control your panic striken squad and your own fears in the face of spactacular alien destruction, gruesome carnage and shocking plot twists and immediate deaths, your only hope is to trust your team and hope that they trust you too. ---- The Thing was first released in the summer of 2002, since then it has sold a lot of copies, no one thought that a game made out of a 20 year old movie would do so well. This game is a 3rd person action adventure which is also a survival horrir game, and it is chock full of action for the harcore actionists and adventure for the adventurists. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* STORY !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* stty Contact with the US outpost has been lost for several days now and the government is beginning to worry about them but unknown to them is that at the US outpost 31 an incident has occoured, the workers there have stumbled upon a bein which is not from this planet, what is it and where it came from was unknown even to them, but all they know is that the species is a hazard for them all because this " thing " can take the form of any living thing it comes in physical contact with. Some time after the contact is severed a rescue team is sent in to take a look at the base and look for survivor's , this team is led by one captain blake, and that's where the adventure begins. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* FIELD MANUAL !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* fmnl In the game thing you will find a field manual, which is like the basic commands of this game, for your convenience i have written the whole thing here. (iii) TRUST Synopsis : If your squad members dont trust you they wont do anything for you, and if they loose all trust in you they might just send you to hell. Your squad members are not mindless robots, they have just found themselves in the middle of an alien encounter and their own life depends on wether or not they can spot a monster that looks, acts, talks, walks and smells intirely human. Because of this they will watch your actions closely and react to anything stupid that you might do. They will also force you to prove yourself and they will not cooperate with you until they are sure that your one of the good guys. You will have to manage their trust to keep them cooperative. Loss factor : You can loose a small amount of trust if you shoot your squad members during combat. You can loose a small amount of trust from squad members if the group is attacked and you dont take part in the combat. You loose a medium amount of trust from a squad member if you force him to undertake an action by pointing a gun at his head. (iv) FEAR Snyopsis : When your squad members get scared they wont perform well, and if they lose it entirely and crack up... they just might call it quits and paint the wall with their own brains. Your squad members are living men and they are entirely aware of the circumstances they are in. Dark places will make them cringe, odd sounds steal their breathes and the sight of those things will absolutely freak them out, you will have to manage their fear in order to keep them stable. Loss Factor : You can calm squad members to a little degree by giving them ammo. You can calm squad members to different degrees by giving them weapons, different weapons have differnt effects ( the ammount of fear they loose depends on the weapon, bigger guns earn them more confidence ) . You can calm squad members to different degrees by killing the things that are causing them fear. You can calm the squad members temporarily by using the adrenaline hypo on them. You can calm the squad member a large degree by taking them away from the area thats causing them fear. Gain Causes : Squad members will gain a small amount of fear from strange sounds they hear. Squad members will gain differen degrees of fear depending the enviroment around them ( the degree they suffer depends on the intensity - the more banged up and grostique an area , the more fear it inspires) . Squad members will suffer a different degree of fear by seeing the things ( the degree they sufer on the type, the bigger thing cause them more fear. (v) THE INVENTORY The inventory screen : Your inventory screen shows you all the items you are carrying. To access the weapons simply open the inventory screen, to see the items bring up the inventory screen and select the show items option in the centre of the ring. To view the documents you have collected press the select button. To view the different keys you have collected select the view documents option and select the show keys option. (vi) WEAPONS AND ITEMS. Stun Gun : Capable to deliver a 5000 volt charge, the stun gun will temporarily disable a target and cause them to drop their weapons, great as an alternative to killing a squad member who is behaving in a hostile manner. Be warned a medium trust down will occour on using the stun gun on a squad member. This cannot be given to a squad member. Pistol : This is the most accurate of all the weapons when used in motion. It fires rapidly and is useful for killing smaller enemies. The pistol will boost a small courage boost and trust when given to a squad member. Machine Gun : The standard firearm of you and your squad members. A rapid firing weapon that can make light work of smaller enemies and can stop the advances of the larger enemies. The machine gun has medium accuracy when used in motion. The machine gun will produce a small amount of courage boost and trust when given to a squad member. Shotgun : The shorgun can fire powerful rounds taht can drive enemies back. Deadly at close range but inaccurate from a long range. The shotgun has medium accuracy when used in motion. The shorgun will produce a medium amount of courage boost and trust when given to a squad member. Blow Torch : The blow torch is a very small range flame weapon. Although it can kill large alien entities, a hit and run stratergy is recommended. The blow torch can also ignite the pathes of fuel on the grounds. Flamethrower : Dont try to take on the self repairing alien entity without the ability to cook them. The flame weapons are the only way to kill them. When attacking them be sure to administer enough ammount of fuel to ignite them but be aware that the enviroment and the squad members can also become a part of the barbeque. The flamethrower can also be used to create fire walls which can be used to pen the enemy targets. Grenade Launcher : This weapon allowes you to prime and launch all grenade types from the launcher. Using grenades in this way will cause them to detonate on impact with any surface. THe grenade launcher has low acuracy when used in motion. This cannot be given to other squad members. Sniper Rifle : The sniper rifle can only be used accurately in first person due to its large inacuracy rate. Use the move forward and backward keys to zoom in and out. Luckily it fires high velocity rounds that can take a human entirely down with a carefully places headshot. The sniper rifle will produce a large amount of courage boost and trust when given to a squad memeber. Standard Grenades : Standerd grenades come in two different flavors Regular and High Explosive. When using them the longer the button is held the furthur the grenade will go. Grenades have a fuse so be warned that hesitation can cause grenades to go off in hands. Standard grenades can be used as a finishing move on the alien entities. Flame Grenades : The longer the button is held down the further the grenade will go. Flame grenades can be used as a final killing move on the larger alien entities . It desperces burning fuel on explosion. Stun Grenades : The longer the button is held the further the grenade will go. While it will not do any health damage, the stun grenade can cause the human targets to drop their weapons, and the alien entities to be temporarily confused. Flares : Used to illuminate the dark areas you may encounter. Equip and press the use item button to ignite. Once burning it can be thrown with the additional press of the action button. The longer the button is held down the further the flare will go. Flares can also be used to ignite the patches of fuel on the grounds. Flash Light : Press the use item button to turn it on, and once again to turn it off. Fire Extuinguisher : Every house hold should have one of these. Use them to get rid of the fires that are blocking your path. Medical Kits : Invaluable if there is no medic available . To use the medical kit on a squad member first equip it and then action it on the injured squad member. To use the medical kit on yourself access the inventory menu and select use on self command. Blood Test Hypo : A new blood test hypo based on the chemical research. Once blood is extracted an agent in the holding tank will burn it when the two combine. If the suspect is infected the blood test will expose him. To use a blood test hypo on a squad member firstly equip it and then action it on the squad member. To use it on yourself access the items menu and select the use on self command. Adrenaline Hypos : Adrenaline can give a temporary boost of courage to a squad member who is suffering from fear. This might be extremely usefel when i squad member looks like he is about to flip out. To use the adrenaline hypo firstly equip it and action it while facing the suffering squad member. (vii) ADVANCED STRATEGIES Coercion : When encountering an uncooperative squad member a special action can be undertaken to make them perform the task to perform coercion first approach the squad member go into first person view with a weapon equipped and point it at his head for three seconds. His squad menu will appear allowing you to pick the task. This however does not come without a penalty as tge squad member will receive a fairly large trust down , so prepared to take some action when this happens. First Person Lean Mode : When in first person view mode, the strafe controls can be used to lean in and out. These controls are pressure sensitive so the ammount of lean can be precisely controled. Use this when available cover allowes it . Crouching : Crouching cannot be only used to take cover and crawl in spaces, but it also increses the accuracy greatly. Using this function when stationary will also increase the accuracy greatly. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* CONTROLS !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* ctls As i am writing this guide for the PC version of THE Thing, the following controls are also for the PC. As part of the first special forces group led by captain whitley, Blake's combat training , sharp mind and fighting skills are second to none. As a natural leader blake's been put incharge of this recconissance mission sent to investigate the strange loss of communication with the US base outpost 31. Blake is the hero of this game, as the profile says he's a born leader and thatwas the reason why he was put incharge of this mission, because of his excellent military skills and his confidence, Blake is the hero type of person who wont let any of his team mates down and will do almost anything to keep them in his confidence, now blake has been sent to antractica to check out the US outpost 31. Here he will fight a new kind of battle, soemthing he never imagined. Whitley : Whitley started the first special forces task force three years ago, now he's heading them in an investigation of the antartic US research base wreckage. Whitley has seen more classified action then most and his specialized knowledge of exteme enviroments and ruthless never say die attitude are legendary. The troops are counting on him for their success and survival Whitley is the man put in tactical incharge of this operation, whitley is more like the father figure of all the troopers sent on this mission because he is a very smart man and he knows more then people know in their entire life times, he's the one who trained blake and that's where blake's confidence comes from, but whitley has something up his sleeve for this mission, what is it, play the game to find it out.. Soldiers : As small arm specials soldiers are highly prficient with all fire powered weapons, trained as lethal killing machines their skills in combat are unmatchable. They are singularly driven to find a target and kill it quickly cleanly and efficiently. More dangerous then most of the others these are the guyz you want with you when in tight situations. You can consider yourself safe for a while as long as you have a soldier or two with you in your gang, if you have any good firearms like the shotgun or the MP5 be sure to hand these fella's one of them, beacuse soldiers have the best aim in any of the NPC's and they can make the most of their weaponry they can use it more effectively then any other personel, and they spend less ammunation too. Medics : With their extensive training and their acute diagnostic skills medics can heal all squad members without medical kits or other tools, as with all other special forces operatives medics are stealth combatants, as precise with a flamethrowe as they are with a scalpel, if he is who he says he is then you can trust a medic to watch your back Soldiers may be better in fighting and combat but medics are in my opinion the most useful of the NPC's because they can completly heal any characters full to their health without using any of your medi packs, the only bad thing about them is taht they cannot heal themselves , and they arent all that good in use with the weaponry, the best thing to hand over to a medic is the pistol. Engineers : Engineers live and breathe technoligy, it its broken they will fix it, if its destroyed they will rebuild it, engineers are known for their adaptabilaty and they can work with any device regardless of its origin, even when it seems beyond repair. Like any piece of hardware they know their guns in and out and wont hesitate in using them. These are the bad boys, required to open many doors in the game which will either lead to goodies or to the end of the level, the engineers are moderate when it comes to combat skills, they know their guns and they know how to use them just fine, if you ever have an engineer in your party be sure to save his ass yourself because they are valueable assets, if there is a large scrap going on just ask them to stay behind. Dont let them die. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* ENEMIES !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* enms Face Huggers : These are the first small things you come across in the game these are alot like those small creatures in the ALIEN movies, they are not all that powerful and can only cause small amount of damage, they can be killed with any weapon in the game, use the pistol on them mostly cause it works best on them. No more then 3 shots and they will die. Not much of a nuisance, but sometimes can be really annoying if there are alot of them in the same area. Walkers : These are the first big things you come across in the game, they are really a pain to kill if you dont know the right method to kill them, these big things can only be burned to death, no matter how much you keep on shooting at them, they still wont die, you need flame guns like the flame thrower or the blow torch to finish them off, the walkers have a strong attack and its best to stay away mostly from them and reduce there health from afar, the best thing to use against them is the shotgun and after that the MP 5. Humanoid walkers : These are also a type of walkers but they look alot like humans and they walk on two legs so they are called the humanoid walkers they are the same as the normal walkers in all the strenghts and weakness's. Use the same strategy to kill them. Human hosts : When one of your NPC's burst out with a thing host then this is what comes out, these are just the normal things too, but they are a bit weak on the attack and they can be killed much more easily then the normal things, some of them can spray acid at you which can cause either health loss or can cause blake to slow down. Use the flamethrower to finish them off. The Dogs : This is probably the worst kind of walkers in the game, they are on all 4 of their legs and they have awesome speed, they can take down blake quickly and they have a charging attack which is very deadly, the best thing to do when you come up aginst them is to shoot while running make them weak this way then carefully kill them with the flamethrower by luring them to chase you then running backwards while flaming them. The Veins : In some of the levels of the game you will come across tentacles which are hanging from the walls, these things are not all that hard to kill and just a few shots will do them over, plus their attack aint all that impressive. Kill them with the MP5. Troopers : Now were talking, the arrival of the troopers in the later stages makes this game look more and more like half life, these troopers are rather weak in health and can be killed with just one shot of the shotgun but there attack is impressive and there AI is marvelous, they will hide behind objects blocking your fire and often chuck grenades at you, the soldiers really have a good AI and are one of the most fun to kill enemies in the game. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* BOSS BATTLES !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* bbts BOSS 1 : The Radio Man Difficulty : Not so hard Method : Quick advice, press the back and right moving keys as the cutscene is happening, and as soon as the fight starts, you will hopefully be able to duck the first shot, now hide in the corner and look at the monstrocity you are about to face , you need a good weapon to turn all the target areas on this boss red. The weapon of choice here is MP5. I advice you to hide in that corner where there are all the crates. Now the boss will have some targets at its base , and those are your concern, as you are shooting the boss will make a hole in the wall near the crates. This will reveal a pod which makes scuttlers, quickly get into first person and torch the pod. Then shoot at the base of the boss until all the targets are red. THen you get a target at the top of the boss, and once you turn that red aswell a small cutscene starts in which you finally see the radio man you were looking for, but he is the head of that boss thing. Somewhere near this point, some tentacles will break through a grate in the other corner of the room, you should get rid of them immediately by shooting as they can be a real pain in the butt. Now shoot open all the crates that are near you, and you will find some fire grenades, just the thing. Throw them at the body of the boss and soon its gonna be over. --------- BOSS 2 : Twin Necked Freak Difficulty : Hard Method : When you open the door a nice little cutscene will introduce you and you will see the boss in it, but your team is nowhere to be seen, thats cause the door closed and they were left out. This boss is a little different from the first boss and it needs a little careful planning to be killed. Dont just run in charging at it, even thought its attacks seem to be slow they can cause a lot of damage per hit. Once you are in control again head a little forward and fix the box which you see , this will turn on the wrech machinery. Now head back and stand in behind the crates in such a way that you can see the boss from there, now equip the HE grenades, if you dont have them then this boss will be a little tougher to kill. Go into first person view so that you can properly aim the grenades, now aim the grenades and throw them towards the thing moster, make sure that you dont throw them a little too close because they can still harm you even if your behind the crates. Thats why they are called High Explosive grenades. Throw atleast six grenades so that the boss gets his health meter in red, and if you run out of the HE grenades dont hesitate to use the regular green grenades. Now if you have some flame grenades go charge in and throw the grende and get out of harms way as soon as you can, if the boss hits you then you will suffer alot, you can take no more then 4 hits from the hands of the boss, once you hear the boss roar it means that it was hurted by the grenades. After he is really really weak equip your flamethrower and head for the switch which was in the same area as the boss, when you press the switch the boss gets a electic shock and its head will drop down but only for a few seconds. Take this time and hit the boss in the part where its neck divides. It will get hurt again, if it doesnt die in the first try keep following the steps until it dies. --------- Boss 3 : Roof Breaker Difficulty : Easy if you know the right method. Method : When you enter the final door a little cutscene will introduce you to the third thing boss, this is the hardest boss in the game byfar if you dont know the proper technique to kill it, inside this same room is a walker held in a glass container besides the boss. Here is the trick to beating this boss, when you enter the room run straight, dont even move a little bit, stand right at the face of the boss, so close that it wouldnt be able to hit you, if you manage to do this then you are in a really nice place, from here you can shoot the boss until its red , and then you should blow the tank of the walker and try to kill it, BUT RemEMBER , dont leave that place where you are standing or else the boss will get you. Try to kill the walker from the same place where you are. If he comes close to you use the flamethrower of if it stays away then the only thing to do is to throw a flame grenade. When the walker is dead its time to kill the main boss. To kill the boss throw a flame grenade right underneath it and run quickly back , keep on retreating back so that the grenade doesnt affect you, if the boss doenst die in the first grenade then the second should definetly kill him. When it is dead then a new objective will be added to your list which is escape. -------- Boss 4 : Whitley Difficulty : Easy Method : The first main targets are the 4 fuel drums which are near the bottom of the boss, it may seem a little hard to hit at first because the chopper is moving a lot. But as soon as you get them 4 the gun will turn upwards towards the upper torso of whitley thing. Here you will see that a long long tenticle comes out of his body in a certain position and then it goes back in. That is its weak spot, keep on hitting him there and soon you shouldve finished the thing. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* WEAPONS !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* wpps Pistol : This is the standard pistol in the game, but surprisingly like many other games you wont start the game off with it, but its found quiet early on and its usefull to the very end of the game, in the earlier levels of the game use it only on the small face huggers, because they die at about 3 well aimed shots, you can use this gun at the walkers too if your a good aim and a quick shot. In the later levels of the game when the troopers start showing up, you can use this gun on them too, but use only if 1 or 2 troopers are near, cause the slow fire rate of this gun can be the cause of death for blake. Giving this gun to your partners will cause a not so large trust boost. MP 5 : This is the gun your squad starts the game off with, the fully automatic MP 5 machine gun, there are plenty of these throughout the game and these are very very usefull indeed, probably the best thing to take out the walkers with and can be used well against the soldiers aswell, i use the MP 5 on all the boss things, because the auto fire can supress their attacks, the face huggers will be cannon fodder for this gun and the walkers will also loose their health quickly once they get a taste of this gun. In the later stages of the game i highly advice using this gun because the troopers almost always drop off MP 5 rounds, so you wont be short on ammo. Giving it to any of your team mates will give a nice trust boost. Shotgun : This is my favourite gun of the game, and MAN does it rock, the shotgun is well known for its power in any game having it and in this game it doest disappoint, the power aswell as the surprisingly fast fire rate makes this gun probably the best in the game, the face huggers die at 1 shot and the walkers are pushed back if you shoot them from close range, even the troopers die at one shot each making this the best gun for close quarters combat, but like the real life shotgun the shot is wide spread meaning that the farther your away from the target the less damage it will receive from the shot but the shot will be spread in an arc. Shotgun shells are plentyfull throughout the game so no point in saving them for later. Giving this to a team mate will cause a hefty trust boost. Sniper Rifle : This game has a sniper rifle too, and like a real sniper rifle there's a zoom in and zoom out scope in it too, the first time you get the rifle is when you'll need it to complete a mission, after that this gun can be pretty useless throughout the game, because of the slow fire rate and because it takes some time after each shot, this gun is NOT advised to be used in close quarters, only and only use it if you see a distant target who hasnt seen you yet, the shot power is awesome though, and giving it to any team mate will cause a HUGE trust boost. Grenade Launcher : This baby can be found in the later stages of the game the grenade launcher is the most powerful single shot gun in the game and it should not be used unless really required, the grenade can be launcher at a nice distance and it has immense power, there is a way to use the flame grenades in the grenae launcher aswell, but i dont know how to do it but if someone does know it, then they can kill the things with jsut this baby, awesome weapon. But you cant give it to any NPC , which isnt a bad thing .. now is it.. ? Blow Torch : This is the first fire weapon you will come across in the game and it sucks really badly, use it only and only if your out of the flamethrower ammo, but if you use it while standing straight there is a high chance that your gonna get burnt yourself so i advice to only use it while running backwards and spraying fire ahead of you. The good side of this gun is taht you can kill the walkers with this gun. Flamethrower : This is one of the best guns in the game and the only thing you should use to get rid of the thing creatures, this can also kill the boss things, with high power and non stop flaming this gun is a handy thing to have in your hands when in close combat with the extra terestrial. If you have a spare flamethrower then its best to give it to any good NPC's to that they can get rid of the thing craetures on there own. Giving it to an NPC will cause a good amount of trust boost. Grenades : There are 4 kinds of grenades in the game, first there are the normal green grenades which can cause good amount of damage to any foe and can be used often, secondly there are the red flame grenades which can be used to get rid of the thing creatures and they can also cause alot of damage to any enemy because they can spew fire all over the place, the best thing to get rid of the bosses, thirdly there are the HE ( high explosive ) grenades, these work like the normal grenades but there power is AWESOME, be sure to run very far away when you throw one of them. Lastly there are the stun grenades which are blue and can be found near the ending stages of the game, they can stun almost every enemy in their tracks, giving you the time to attack or run away. !*!*!*!*!*!*(`'·.¸ ¸.·'´)¸.·'´)¸.·'´)!*!*!*!*!*!* COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH !*!*!*!*!*!* '·.¸)`'·.¸)`'·.¸) !*!*!*!*!*!* wrtc Now the walkthrough begins. Take note of the assimilation complete screen while the levels are loading, it looks cool :). As the game will begin the first few rounds are very easy and there is almost no fighting done in them. Take advantage of this and use these rounds to learn the basic controls are your squad commands. These are the best rounds for training. ########################### # LEVEL 1 # # Remains of the Outpost 31 # # ########################### When the cutscenes are over you will start the game, but a popup screen |
