Anyway, this version I have added What else I have submitted, an alternative strategy to the Escape on Alcatraz challenge, ALOT more Frequently Asked Questions (In fact, about 15 more or so). Done the character Bio's, take from THPS3 as they don't have it in this game, and last but not least, added in more trick descrpitions and the landing types. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 29th, 2003 Ohh, this seems like a pretty big update. VERSION: 3.5 Added in the whole multiplayer section, FILE SIZE: 340kb inlcuding the descriptions for most of the game modes (Except for Slap and Free Run) and added in the whole tips section for trick lines that you will need in every level. Added in afew more frequently Asked Questions and some more combo tricks, and I think thats about it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 28th, 2003 Haven't updated this file for nearly a VERSION: 3.4 week, that is manily because I have been FILE SIZE: 327kb busy with afew other guides. This update was done in nearly 1 hour. In this update I have added: Song lists, inlcuding the bands, link to lrics and wishlist for Tony Hawks 5, the miscellaneous section, with the tourney, added some combo scoring tips, and reformatted the Table of Contents to make it look better. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 20th, 2003 Well, it looks like I did a real lot, VERSION: 3.2 but seriously, I didn't. All I did was FILE SIZE: 311kb add in the moves to each character, what points they get for each trick, and how to execute each trick. Added the "What this contains" at the top, and also added one more pro challenge, which is the combo scare 40 birds one. Also made afew more changes around the place, like in the Table of Contents. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 18th, 2003 Well, a very big update. All I really VERSION: 3.0 did was add afew goals in the Pro FILE SIZE: 283kb section, but also added in a whole gap checklist, with total credit to PPM, thanks bud, it's really appreciated. All gaps are in there. Please, any comments about the gaps, please contact him, his email is ppm42(at)yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 16th, 2003 Decided that I am going to only try and VERSION: 2.7 work on this FAQ for the rest of the FILE SIZE: 221kb month, trying not to submit any other new file, and work on this one. Added three more pro challenges, one in Alcatraz, one in Kona, and another one in the Shipyard. Might get a gap list put up sometime. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 15th, 2003 A big update here. Started by finsihing VERSION: 2.5 goals around the place, but there are FILE SIZE: 217kb still afew holes in the normal goals that I haven't filled in as of yet. Added the Cheats section, as well as the secrets and glitches section. Thats about it me thinks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: March 11th, 2003 Not much here, it was long time since I VERSION: 2.1 updated last, but my friend has got the FILE SIZE: 169kb game now, getting it back tommorown so I can update some more. All I did was add a new site to host this guide. I forgeot the actual site name, but it starts with a f. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: February 24th, 2003 Added alot here. Started on the Pro VERSION: 2.0 challenges and done some of them. Some FILE SIZE: 168kb are missing from each level though, and Im yet to do past Kona. Yeah, I know, I'm lazy. Added in and then took at the gap checklist and cash icons section in the table of contents cos I'm yet to do them. I aslo added in the Custom Skater Specific walkthrough, added in the Playing Online section, re-did the table of contents and made a new section labelled "Levels Stuff." Added a section of whats new to this game from it's predessor, A big update. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: February 21st, 2003 A few things done. Mainly, I continued VERSION: 1.8 on the Pro Challenges. I complete the FILE SIZE: 138kb pro specific challenges Bob Burnquist, Rune Glifberg, Bam Magera and Elissa Steamer. Also, I added the Frequently Asked Questions Section and added things to that. Updated the TOC and made it look better and added the what's to Come section. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: February 19th, 2003 This version, I started doing hepro VERSION: 1.6 specific challenges. It took me half an FILE SIZE: 119kb hour only to do two of them, but then again, the Television was going in the background, putting me off, but still I liked the show. Tony Hawk and Chad Muska were done here, and this will be updated as soon as possible. Also added in something about the Nollie. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: February 14th, 2003 Another smallish update, all I did was VERSION: 1.4 start on the San Francisco pro FILE SIZE: 114kb challenges. I did 3 of them, all about 1kb each, and that is all I done for today. I do not have enough time to update, because I have school and don't get home to like 3:30 and can only update for approximately 1 hour. I need to go back and play this game and get more notes, so it might be along while since I update next, unless I decide not to do the walkthrough and concentrate on something else about this game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: February 13th, 2003 Didn't update much here, only 3kb worth VERSION: 1.2 as you can see in the title of marked FILE SIZE: 111kb KB. With this 3kb, all I added was three more pro challenges. They are the ones for the first level, which is of course the college. Will work more on this guide sometime, maybe tomorrow if I can. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: February 11th, 2003 This is the first Version of the guide. VERSION: 1.0 It's not complete yet, but I say that FILE SIZE: 108kb it is very informative for every goal I have covered in the guide. Most of the Normal goals are complete, and note I said most there. About 80% complete to be near exact. I am still missing a few from the carnival, and I have not even started to do anything about the Pro Challenges or the Pro Specific challenges. More updates will come later, if I can find time for this guide. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ####################################################################### ======================================================================= 1: PROLOUGE ======================================================================= ####################################################################### INTRODUCTION ============ I have been a fan on the Tony Hawk's series. I have played them all. It first came along when I was playing a demo, and was Cycling through the games playing them. Then I came across Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, played the demo and I thought yeah, it was pretty good. On the demo you were allowed to make your own park (With limited pieces) so then I thought it was even better. I eventually bought it as my 3rd game on the Playstation. My brother also liked it as well, so we borrowed a friends copy of Tony Hawk's 1. I didn't really think much of that one though, but it was still good. Then I heard number 3 was coming out, so then I bought that the same day it came out. About 1 week later, I thought it was so good and had lot's of replay value, I completed the game 100% with every character, a custom skater, all goals done, all competitions first placed, all stats collected and all the decks and everything else done. It was an excellent game. Then I got my Playstation 2, and bought Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, this game that I writing a guide for now. I really like the series, and this one is great as well. Although I don't skateboard in real life, I still like these sort of games. PACKAGE ======= Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4, back cover: Pros challenge you to to make your mark in huge, free roaming levels, taking on 190 progressively harder goals with no time limits to hold your back. Decide when you're ready to take on your pro challenge and move into the pro ranks, where it is a whole new game. Build your skills, earn respect, and show that you've got what it takes to become pro.... NEW THINGS IN THPS4 =================== Here is where I list the new things in this game, and also the things that are taken out from the previous ones. FLATLAND TRICKS: Able to pull off things such as handstands and pogos and flips while in a manual. Looks cool as well as giving you some extra points for the multiplyer. LIP BALANCER: Able to see how your lip trick is balancing. On THPS3 on the Playstation, you could not see this, I'm not sure about the PS2 version though. NO BIG DROP: In THPS3 Playstation 1, there was a big drop if you fell from a building up high. There isn't this here. I suppose there is too many big jumps you need to execute. DOUBLES: You can perform things like double heelflips, kickflips, impossibles and all those sort of things. DOUBLE TRICK BUTTON: if you press left, circle, circle, you will do a total new different trick than the main circle button. SKITCHIN: Basically hold on to the back of a car and it will take you around. Great for some extra points. ======================================================================= ####################################################################### ======================================================================= 2: GAME BASICS ======================================================================= ####################################################################### CONTROLS ======== Button name Action ------------------------------------------------- - Cross - Jump/Ollie - Square - Flip Tricks - Circle - Grab Tricks - Triangle - Grind Tricks - L2 - Transfer/Revert - R2 - Revert/Transfer - R1 - Spin right - L1 - Spin Left ADVANCED CONTROLS ================= L1: Skate Switch SELECT: Change Camera TRICK EXAMPLES ============== Tricks can be done by pressing a trick button, such as SQUARE, and then a directional button before hand, for example: press left + square, or left, then square while in the air and your character will perform the trick selected. Pressing different combinations and your character will do different moves. Here are some examples of tricks: CIRCLE: Will do a grab trick, a grab trick is any trick that involves the character grabbing his board to do a trick. This includes Melons, Cannonballs, and thousands more. SQAURE Will do a flip trick, a flip trick is anything where the board is flipped, or spun around. TRIANGLE Is a grind, a grind is when your board goes along a rail, or something like a rail that has an edge. OLLIE Spin and you will get points, not much though. An Ollie is where you just jump and spin around abit. ADVANCED TRICKS =============== MANUALS: Yes, manuals return. To do a manual, press up then down while in the air, and when you land, it will go into a manual. Manuals are used to keep a combo alive. You can do a manual while you are on the ground, but then all point of keeping a combo alive is gone. REVERTS: To do a revert, go up a vert ramp and just as you land back on the vert ramp, press the R2 or L2 button, I prefer R2 because I've been using it since the last game. A revert is just like a switch and is mainly used to keep a trick alive. WALLRIDE: To do a wall ride, approach a wall so that you are parallel to it. Then move into the wall, jump and then grind next to the wall. There you go, a wall ride. Jump again and grind and you can reach even higher places than normal sometimes. FLATLAND TRICKS: Yes, new to Tony Hawks 4. You are able to do flatland tricks, such as pogo's, wrap around and more. To do flatland tricks, go into a manual, and then experiment with combos, such as Triangle + Triangle. This can be used to get more points. SPECIALS: A special is just what it says. It's a trick that is special to a character, and scores more points than other basic tricks. Special moves have a button combination such as UP, RIGHT + SQUARE. Also a noise comes up when you do a special. LIP TRICKS: Lip tricks are something where you stand still on the lip doing a trick with either your arms or the board. To do a lip trick, go up a vert ramp straight, and then at the edge, press a button combination + triangle really quickly so it does a lip trick instead of a grind. NOLLIE: A Nolie is just like an Ollie, really. It may be something to do with the board or something. Press L1 to get into position, and then press X to jump and do a nollie. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EMAIL FROM: El Tony A Nollie is just not an Ollie. First, the way you pop the board is a Switch stance position (the wrong foot on the nose of the board and it's in Fakie (The foot that pops is placed on the nose instead of tail) and call it a switch fakie ollie. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SKITCHIN: Skitchin is just hanging on to the back of a car. Just go up to the back of a car/cart/vehcile and press the up button next to the back of it, then just balance yourself out. Here are some descriptions from my THPS3 guide: Ollie ----- Ollie is a basic jump. To jump/ollie, press the X button. Hold down the X button and then let go to get more air. Ollie is the basic of all tricks. Press X neat to the lip to get good air on a half pipe. Manual ------ Manuals are designed really for keeping a trick alive to score more points for it. For example, if you do a great trick, then land, the manual will keep the trick going so you can find another rail or anything to go up again and continue the big score of the trick. Grab ---- Grab tricks are a great way to increase your trcik score. Do grab tricks by pressing and holding the O button down. The longer you hold the button down, the more points you score. You can also turn while doing grab tricks. Flips ----- These moves just basically make your board flip. They don't really score more points than the grab, but still good for some extra combo points or just to make a combo look better. Grinds ------ A grind is where you basically move along a rail. To do a grind, approach a rail/edge and press the triangle button next to it, or jump onto it and press triangle. Pressing triangle and different directions can of course perform different grinds. You also need to balance a grind, so use the directional buttons to do that. Plants ------ Plants are basically a stationary trick on the edge of a lip. To do a plant or a lip trick as they are called, find a bowl/halfpipe, and perform like a grind. When you are near the lip, quicckly press triangle + direction to do a plant. the longer you hold it, the more points you get. Let go of triangle to exit the trick. Reverts ------- Reverts are just a trcik at the end of a combo to keep it going for extra points and score. A revert is a switch at the end of a combo. To do a revert, press R2 when you land to do a revert. Before take-off tricks ---------------------- Before take off tricks are tricks thaty are perform before you take off from the lip, to get extra points. These are a No Comply, and a Boneless. To do a no comply, press up + x, be sure to do it at the right time, other wise you will roll over the ramp. Press up, up X to do a boneless. Wallride -------- To do a Wallride, get paralell to a wall, and then skate in towards it and press triangle. Your character will 'ride' on the wall. press X to jump higher. Special ------- Special tricks are perfromed by your character as their special move. These moves are better than any other, and look cool as well as score way more points than the other tricks. GAME MODES ========== FREE SKATE: Just lets you roam around all the levels that you have unlocked, or you will mostly use this to play a park that you made, because we all know that you can free skate in craeer mode around the level. SINGLE SEESION: Just lets you take the level for 2 minutes. Just score massive amounts of points and try to beat that score next run. CAREER MODE: Take on the main mode of the game, pros challenge you to goals, that get progressively harder each level. Also, you can roam around the level freely until you decide to take a challenge. NETWORK PLAY: Apparently if you hook up your Playstation 2 to your computer, you can play over the iternet. I don't know how to do it, and I really don't want to know. MULTIPLAYER: Play against a friend, your borther or anyone in some enjoyable multiplayer matches. Choose your character, player, etc. - Those are the game modes. Create a skater, Options etc. are NOT a game mode. They are just a sundrie or somthing TERMS ===== Here are some skateboarding terms I use, and the game uses. HALFPIPE: A halfpipe is two vert ramps opposite each other QUARTER PIPE: A basic vert ramp VERT RAMP: A thing used for going up and getting air points GAME TIPS ========= Massive Combo ------------- If you want to get a massively big combo, then here is how: 1. Find a halfpipe, a hlafpipe is where two quarterpipes are opposite each other, so you can land on one quarter pipe, and then go up the other one nearly as soon as you land, or afew seconds later. Make sure they are pretty close. 2. Go up one side of the halfpipe. It doesn't matter which side of the halfpipe it is, just find one and launch up into the air. 3. Perform a grab trick and spin it around. This will get you a massively big score, especially while a spin and a grab at the same time. Something like a Benihana or a method will do. They are both great for this. Anything like a Madonna can be too complicated. 4. Land in a revert and a manual. Revert first, when you are about to land by pressing the R2 or L2 button. By preffered is the R2. Manual while you are in the revert by pressing up, down or down, up. 5. Go up the other side of the vert ramp, and then do the same. Either a special or a spinning grab trick will do here. Since you still have alot of air, you should be able to sneak in a big trick. 6. Repeat the last stage, and revert into a manual. Also, REPEAT THE ABOVE, go up the next side of the vert ramp and keep on going until you lose all speed. 7. Do some flatland tricks while you are in the manual, since you will be still. handstands and handflips are good for some points, but any tricks will do. To perform a flatland trick, press, for example, O + O to do a handtstand, or Triangle + Triangle to do a pogo. 8. Land the trick, do not stack it. Hopefully you will get a massively big score, weathere your stats are good, excellent, the best, or crap. Wonkyness Fixed --------------- Sometimes when you accidently go off the side of a quarterpipe and then transfer over, but find out that there is no Vert ramp below to land on, then you will be looking at diving staright into the ground. Either press up or down to correct this, or easily press and hold R2. Combos Alive ------------ As I mentioned in the first tip, there are several ways you can keep a combo alive, so are just like a revert, a manual, or grabbing onto a a ledge and grinding. Do everything you can to keep it going. Slow Motion ----------- If you have any trouble with any challenge that involves something to do with balancing on a lip trick, grind, or a manual or finding things, than use this cheat. It can be bought in the secrets shop, and will make things easier because you can tell whats going to happen slower than before, thus allowing you to quickly correct it. Good cheat this, helped me finsih the game. ####################################################################### ======================================================================= SCORING TECHNIQUES ======================================================================= ####################################################################### SCORING TIPS (Straight from the manual) ======================================= Combine grab and flip tricks while catching air for higher scores You can continue your combo moves using reverts and manuals. Manuals will keep your combo going across flatland ground sections. Reverts will keep your combo going from big air tricks of ramps During a run, (except free skate) every time you repeat a trick, that tricks value will decrease. To get a high score, your going to have to thnk about your line and mix up tricks that you perform 2. Switch tricks are worth more and devalue seperately from your regular tricks 3. Try to trick in and out of every grind 4. Use special tricks for huge scores 5. Spinning while in the air perfroming tricks will net bigger scores. Press L1 and R1 (Or left/right) buttons to spin faster. 6. Every trick in a combo adds to your score multiplyer. 7. Nollie tricks score more points than regular tricks 8. Trick across gaps to maximise your combos 9. Explore the hidden combos to find new tricks 10. You can combo every trick - Lip tricks, manuals, vert tricks, grinds etc. and use reverts to link them all together. New to THPS4 are spine transfers and skitching...and you can link those combos too! GETTING A SICK SCORE ==================== Ever had a dream that you want to get a 500,000 + score in one combo? it seems impossible, but honestly, it's not. Heres how to get a great big score: * Go to somewhere like a halfpipe, a halfpipe is where 2 ramps are opposite each other, so when you land on one, you will have to just keep going foward and you will go up the next ramp) an example of this is a bowl, or just the one in Kona that is wooden. * Go up the vert ramp, but just pull off a little trick, this is just to get speed and isn't the start of the big combo * Then go up the next side of the vert ramp, and pull off a really big trick and spin it as well, such as a cannonball, melon or any grab trick * Just as you are about to land on the lip, press the R2 button, this will revert you, while the revert is going, press up, down or down up to go into a manual * This will keep the trick alove, so go up the vert ramp opposite and perfrom another really big trick, and revert into a manual at the end * Keep on doing this and the combo will eventually grow so large. Try to get your base score up to about 20,000. * After doing so many manuals though, you will eventually lose alot of speed, but you want to keep the trick going right? Yeah of course. * Pull off ground tricks. Now we are trying to get your multiplyer higher. Start doing pogos, then quikcly go into a wrap around, back to a pogo, etc. etc. * Keep doing this and balance yourself. Land when you have a score something like this: 21,020 x 24. That will give you a HUUUGEEE score. * Roughly, that will give you a massive score of about: 500,000 points MULTIPLIER ========== This is how I have worked out the multiplyer does: Lets say you first start off by doing a heelfip: Totoal: 100 points Next, you do a Fs Shove it: 200 points. This is what your score will look like: 100 + 100 = 200 x 2 = 400. Voila! VARIATION ========= Keep your tricks variated, this means do different ones when you need togo for something like a pro score that is huge. Keep doing different tricks, and not the same for more points. Tricks decrease each time you use it by about %15 of the total score. But sometimes, the second time you do the trick, it can actaully be more than the first time, maybe it's something to do with the air you get off the jump. *Is confused!* COMBO TIPS ========== HERE ARE SOME EXTRA COMBO TIPS FROM THPSONLINE.COM: REVERTS Just like in THPS3, reverts are essential to high scores. The best way to build up your base score in THPS4 is to hit QP's for 720 or 900 special grabs. With the advent of the revert, you can now link these QP's airs almost infinitely. By reverting at the bottom of the QP, you can continue manualing into a combo. However, reverts will slow you down. There is a trick to keeping your speed though, and that is to jump just as soon as the revert animation starts, and land in a manual again. This will keep you going faster, however you will still slow down. So after reverting it is important to find a rail to grind, which will get your speed back up to normal. It is also of note that the revert button will now also right your skater should you happen to fall off the side of a QP, by righting yourself, you can land in a manual and continue your combo. Also, you can use this feature to cause your skater to land on a rail, thus airing into a grind, which can be very useful and adds alot of variety to a line. SPECIALS What types of specials you have also depends on your style of play. If you do alot of airs, throwing in more air specials will give you a higher base. More grinding and the opposite applies. However, a good mix of specials is SIX airs and FOUR grinds (or FIVE and FIVE). Special manuals, while very cool, are essentially worthless in getting high scores. They take a while to even register to get points, and by the time it does, you will already be jumping onto another rail. Special Manuals are a waste of a slot, don't use them if you really want to get high scores. Specials that can be spun yeild the most points, so use the majority of your air trick slots for those. The flips in THPS4 spin alot faster than in THPS3, so these are very good additions to your trickset. The kickflip backflip is VERY fast, and you can actually throw in two in a decent air. The misty flip is also good because it is worth the most points out of any of the flips. With 11 special trick slots, it is a good idea to have at least a few flips on hand. They come in very handy when you just need to quickly throw a special, and since they spin faster, you can now do 540 backflips which yeild about the same points as most 900 special grabs. BALANCING First thing: The absolute KEY to balancing lies in soft taps. DO NOT hold the opposite direction when attempting to fix your balance, that will just screw you over when your balance meter flies back the other way. Any time you are grinding, manualing, whatever, you should be constantly tapping the button in order to keep it centered. Lots of light taps are better than a single hard press, it will give you much more control. Now, sometimes the balance meter will start to go towards one side, and then come back on it's own. If this is the case, just let it come back until it reaches the middle, then resume tapping to keep it there. Any time you leave a rail, make sure the meter is close to being in the middle. If you leave the meter close to one side when you jump off, when you hit the next rail the meter will still be close to the side and you will most likely bail. LANDINGS ======== They haven't changed from THPS3, so here they are from my FAQ on that: Landing ------- Of course, to get points, you need to land the trick. To land, stop doing all tricks and head to ground. its no good still doing a trick and trying to land, as you will stack the trick and loose all recognition for it, as well as those valuable points. There is 3 ways you can land, well, actually 3 types of ways that can score more. Perfect Landing --------------- You landed absolutely perfect, the board was in exact line. Perfect tricks are easy to do, you just don't spin in the air, but do normal tricks, like flips, and you should land perfectly. But sometimes it doesn't always count it. Perfect gets you bonus points, not much, but still good. Normal ------ The most common landing you will get. This is when you land your board slightly off line, not good enough to be a perfect, but not bad enough to be a sketchy landing, this will probably happen 1/2 of your landings. Still, you should strife for perfect, but when doing spin tricks, it is easier to just keep spinning and landing normal than to try and line it up perectly. Sketchy ------- This happens when you land slightly on the side, or like that. The landing is not good enough to be normal, but not bad enough to be a complete failure and you stack it. But this is nearly stack, so watch your positions. Stack ----- This can commonly happen, you landed sideways, or you didn't finish the trick before you tried to land. You will lose all your points that you created in the air, and you will fall down. Press buttons to get back up quicker. ####################################################################### ======================================================================= 4: NORMAL GOALS WALKTHROUGH ======================================================================= ####################################################################### ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- COLLEGE ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GRIND DOWN OFFICER TOM'S BANNERS ================================ To get this mission, go towards the stairs leaading towards the upper section of the lkevel, the guy is just on the road waiting for you, if you can't find him, he has an arrow above his head, and is a citizen.
