Ordinarily, 5 games in 5 years is a gradual slide into mediocrity for any series. Not Hawk. The now well-known duo of Activision and Neversoft have made sure of that by adding and improving in every way possible for each new game that came along in the series. THUG is no exception, but this time around it's a whole different story, literally... As you might know, I've also written a FAQ for THPS 4, and I'd like to start by thanking everyone who emailed me with questions or comments about the FAQ and the game. You guys are why I'm writing this. My interest in writing never waned, but my spare time has been on the decline since starting high school. But, a FAQ needs to be made, and I feel more than confident that I can help you through any goal in the game. Shredding the local playground and tearing up a few half pipes on your roughed up board are the only things on your mind, until a visit from Chad Muska, that is. He suggests you get sponsored by the local skateshop, and so begins your journey to skateboarding's higghest ranks, along with your good friend Eric. You'll meet other pros along the way, win a few competitions, and even get a custom board. From the underground to the top, the game is YOURS. The Characters: YOU : You can be whoever you want to be. Boy, girl, tall, short, mohawk or bald, the choice is yours. If you have a Network Adapter and a digital camera you can even get your face scanned into the game and mapped onto your character to complete the personalized expierience. Your goal is to go from underground skate punk to pro, and you'll need to be good to pass the many tests and obstacles along the way. Think you can handle it? ERIC : Eric Sparrow is your best friend. He lives in your neighborhood and tags along as you make your run for the top. He has the talent to make it, but he'll constantly end up in your shadow as your skills top his repeatedly. You'll start to question his shady tactics and his friendship throughout the story, and only a final showdown in your hometown will settle things with him. MR. PERALTA : Owner of the local skateshop and yogo enthusiast, he'll become your first official sponsor. He's always there when you need him, and during your lowest low he's there with ideas and suggestions. The Controls: Ollie ........................ X This is the basis for all skateboarding tricks. You'll constantly have your thumb on the X button durind combos because it is the building block of everything you do in the game No comply .................... up + X A way to ollie higher Boneless/Fastplant/Beanplant . up, up + X An even higher way to ollie Wallplant .................... down + X (when skating at 90 degree angle toward wall) This is helpful when you're skating or manualing straight at a wall and you don't have room/time to turn around. Great for combos in cramped areas. Skitch ....................... up (when behind a vehicle) Introduced in THPS4, it's only practical purpose is getting a lot of air for big spins. You can skitch and moving vehicle in the game. Manual ....................... up, down or down, up Introduced in THPS2, this is without a doubt the best trick in the game when you're looking for big combos. Without it, combos would very rarely be higher than a few hundred thousand. Use it wisely, and you'll score in the several millions. Revert ....................... R2 or L2 (when coming down on a vert ramp) This trick was hyped a lot when THPS3 came out because it gives you the ability to link vert tricks with your street tricks in a combo. It's useful, but most of the biggest combos involve far more street than vert, so it's not as important as the manual. Still nice to have, though. Spine Transfer ............... R2 or L2 (when in the air over a spine) This little move just allows you to transfer over spines during a combo so you can get to other parts of the level a little easier. Not too important, still somewhat useful. Grab Tricks .................. any direction + circle All grab tricks can be held for as long as you need if you keep cirlce held down. They're generally worth more than flip tricks but have slower animations. Flip Tricks .................. any direction + square Flip tricks are most useful for upping your multiplier during your combos. You should try to flip into and out of every grind and manual for a higher score. The animations are pretty fast but they're generally very low-scoring. Grinds ....................... any direction + triangle Grinds are what street skating is all about. It'd be wise of you to get familiar with various special grinds and combinations because in any great combo most of the tricks are grinds. The scores increase until you end the grind, and variety is the key during those longer grinding lines. Lip Tricks ................... any direction + triangle (when riding up vert ramp at 90 degree angle) Lip tricks aren't too usefull at all, are hard to balance, and aren't worth enough points to be included in most of your combos. When losing speed during a vert-only combo, they can be useful as a last resort move before you completely slow down. -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= + .3. + + -Skatethrough- + =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= NOTE: This skatethrough was written using the Sick difficulty setting. I have not tested it with the other difficulties, but it should work for most goals. If not, I apoligize. _____________________________________________________________________________ | .3a. | |-- -- -- -- -- -- NEW JERSEY -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- | |_____________________________________________________________________________| ___________________________ Chapter 1: Hometown Hijinks -Clear your head and have some fun skating your hometown. ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ============================== -Help Eric- ============================== For the game's first goal you'll have to get off your board and do a little walking around and climbing to get Eric's board back. Start by pressing X to jump over the fence in front of you. Run forward to the house and press X to jump again, but press R1 while in the air to grab ahold of the roof. Pull yourself up and grab the wheel. Now, run forward and jump of the roof toward the house where the next part is sitting on. If you can make it, jump all the way over and pull yourself up from the edge of the roof. If not, just climb up from the ground. Once there, grab the trucks and turn to the left. Position the camera to get a good view of your next jump, line it up, and go for it. Walk along the roof and get the other wheel, then continue down to the top of your roof for the deck. After Eric gives you back your board, he'll want you to further test out the newest move in the Tony Hawk series. Press R1 and L1 while you're skating toward the barriers to get off your board, then press X to jump both of them. Part two has you running with the board then jumping into a grind on a rail. Easy stuff. For the last part, you need to jump into a grind on the first rail, ollie off and get off your board, jump the barrier, then jump into another grind on the second rail. Be quick about it though, because if you take too much time between the two rails your run timer will empty and the combo will end, thus ending the entire goal. ============================== -Walk Charles- ============================== This is a pretty easy goal involving the skitch move introduced in the last game. To walk Charles, just skate up to him and press 'up' to grab his tail and hold on as he pulls you all over the neighborhood. Hold the skitch for 30 seconds and you get 5 bucks! ============================== -Eric's Challenge- ============================== After talking a little smack with Eric, he'll challenge you to land a Melon grab. Simple. After that, he'll ask you to do the trick again but land it in a revert four different times. Still easy. Next up is a Melon with a revert to manual. When you've done all that, he'll challenge you to beat his high score. Unlike past games, there isn't a set score for you to reach. He'll be racking up his own score while you skate, so just throw down some good combos and make sure his score never gets higher than yours. ============================== -Get in tight with the street warriors- ============================== This is the first of many goals in the game where you'll have to drive some type of vehicle. The car is nice, but driving in this game isn't too exciting thanks to the wacky physics and odd handling. The course goes like this: Drive straight down the road, take a right at the intersection, take the next right, continue down the skinny road at the end of this street, hang a right after the playground, take another right, go down the road you started on, turn right and enter the alley between the houses, hit the wooden ramp, turn left at the street, ride down to the arch at U-turn at the cone, ride back down the street and take the right before the dead end, turn into another alley on your right half way down the street, take a left when you get back on the street, then ride down it to the racing shop where you started. ============================== -Flyer for the Muska demo- ============================== You only have to hit 8 spots, so don't worry about all the green fists you see floating around. You can get them all in one line by grinding the concrete barrier in front of where you start for the first flyer, then hopping into a grind on the ledge next to the house for the second one. Ollie off and skate/manual down the sidewalk for the third flyer, then skate past or grind the next ledge for flyer four. Cross the street and grind the fence that transfers to the brick wall, and hold it to the end for the fifth and sixth flyers. Cross the street again and post the seventh and eigth flyers on the telephone poles down the sidewalk. ============================== -Impress Muska- ============================== It's time to impress Muska as he cruises around and checks out the best skate spots in town. The first he hits is the playground near the skateshop, which is right in front of where you start this goal. Hop the fence and throw down a 150,000 point run to impress him. If you're having trouble getting a score this big, just remember that combos are the key. Throw in as many spins, grabs, and flips as you can while in the pool, and when you slow down too much to go up the side, steady your manual balance and bust a few flatland tricks at the end to get your multiplier up. Also, special tricks are a must for the bigger goals and scores later on in the game. Equip as many as you can, and make sure they're easy to remember. The Indy 900 is the highest scoring trick in the game, so you might want to keep that in mind. Keep working and you'll get the hang of it. ___________________________ Chapter 2: Impressing The Locals -Get in tight with the local skateshop and its riders... ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ============================== -Impress Shawn- ============================== For the first part of this goal, you'll just need to make your way to the roof of the house in front of you. To do that, get some speed and hit the quarter pipe under the house, and press R1 and L1 at the same time during the highest point of your jump to hop off the board and onto the roof. After that, you'll need to get some more speed and transfer the half pipe at an angle towards your house, clearing the alley gap and landing safely in the other pipe. Lastly, you'll be put back into the first half pipe and you'll need to spine transfer back down to the ground. Simply roll forward from the start and hit R2 or L2 in the air for a spine transfer. Too simple. ============================== -Demo the new playground setup- ============================== This goal is very similar to the one where you had to impress Muska, but it's about 50,000 points easier. If you're up for a challenge, try getting the score in one combo, or using only flatland tricks. The entire playground is yours, so take advantage of it! ============================== -Impress Joey- ============================== The first two parts of this goal are just getting you more familiar with the spine transfer, a move that is rarely too useful, but still helpful to some degree. You'll spine transfer over a dumpster wrapped in plywood ramps, and then you'll do it again but with a kickflip on the way over. The interesting part comes last when you have to perform a long list of tricks (about 20) Joey calls out within 1 minute. The tricks are simple (regular flip and grab tricks), so you could probably do them all by just ollieing and without the use of a quarter pipe. Either way, you'll have plenty of time to finish. ============================== -Do Chris's best lines- ============================== I really like this goal because it's good preparation for the lines you'll be nailing later on in the game. Anyway, the first line starts out on the barrier in front of you, then over to the playground fence, then back to the second barrier, then over the street to the fence, then back across the street to the concrete barrier and finally to the last piece of concrete to finish it. The next line is a little more complicated. Start by grinding the concrete ledge in front of you on the sidewalk. Jump out of that and into a manual, and make your way down the sidewalk to the next ledge. Grind it, then hop over the street to the fence and grind it. Hold your balance as you slide down the brick wall, and jump the street again to grind another ledge. At the end of the ledge jump to your right and land a grind on the short brick walls in front of the houses. Jump the last gap and grind the porch to finish the second line. ============================== -Get the stolen items back from the dealers- ============================== Damn druggies, always taking stuff that doesn't belong to them... Luckily, you volunteered to fetch the gear, so it's all up to you. The time limit is 45 seconds, so don't mess it up. Start by sprinting down the streetuntil you pass the row of tall pillars at the front of the school on your right. Jump up and pull yourself onto the short ledge after it. Once there, run down the path and follow it as it turns right and then left again and onto the porch roofs of the houses below. Creep along, jumping over the short gap and continuing until you reach the end. Turn to the left and face the power lines. Don't try this at home, but you'll need to jump at them and grab onto one of the lines by pressing R1. Shimmy along to the right until you're near the telephone poll, then drop. Jump the ledge and grab the board off the porch to finish chapter 2. ___________________________ Chapter 3: Getting Outta Dodge -Eric is in deep with the local dealers! Gotta find a way to get you guys outta there! ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ============================== -Get the scrapmetal for the tombstone maker- ============================== Start by skating down the street in front of you until the red arrow is pointing directly to the right. Get off your board and hop the fence into the yard, then climb onto the roof of the shorter building for the first piece. The second piece is straight across the alley on the roof of the next house. Jump the gap (or climb up) to get over there and grab the icon. Look to the left and jump over to the next roof for piece 3, themn continue down the hilly path to the top of your house for piece 4. The next one is floating on the house across the alley to the left of you, so jump over and grab it. Now, jump down to the street and you should see the last piece sitting on top of a porch across the street. Run into the yard and climb up to it. After you've collected the pieces, the ramp will be set up. Johny Turbo will offer to pull you on the back of his car, so skate up to it and start skitching. Stick to the left side of it because that is the side you will launch from. Hold on until you're a few feet from the ramp (but not too late) then hold X and press 'down' to let go of the car. Release X on the ramp to get some good distance and cross the bridge. ============================== -Get access to the train station- ============================== To confuse Security Stew and gain access to the train station, you have to grind around the flashing concrete circle in the middle of the road 5 times so he'll chase you around it and get confused. It doesn't have to be all at once, so if you fall off just get back up and finish it. And how can Stew run that fast if he's that old? ============================== -Impress the Bratty Kid- ============================== The way I see it you have 2 options here. If you have l33t flatland skills you can just throw down some freestyle moves right where you start. The second option is to try your luck grinding the ledges in the area. Personally, I prefer the former because I'm good like that and not being able to touch any part of the street makes the second option that much harder. Just do what's good for you. ============================== -Catch Ollie's house- ============================== The 5 pieces of Ollie's house are scattered around the train tracks that loop around the station. They all have to be gotten in one combo, so I hope your balance is pretty good. Start by skating forward until you're a few feet from the first piece. Start a grind on either one of the middle rails (preferably the one closer to the piece of cardboard) and keep your balance steady as you make a lap around the tracks on the rail, picking up pieces as you go. Because the wind is blowing the pieces back and forth, if you miss one you'll either have to try and balance a little while longer so you can try for it a second time, or, and I prefer this method, jump off the tracks and land in a manual and take a shortcut to the piece. If you miss 2 or more, this will be pretty hard to do so I recommend starting over. ============================== -Save Eric!- ============================== This is a stupidly simple goal, with an emphasis on stupid. The first part has you chasing the car the dealers have Eric in back to their hangout. Just stay behind them and don't bail and it's too easy. When they get back to their place, Johnny Turbo will head them off and let you borrow his car to chase them back to the train station. Again, just follow the car and it's a snap. |+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+| +|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+ _____________________________________________________________________________ | .3b. | |-- -- -- -- -- -- MANHATTAN -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- | |_____________________________________________________________________________| ___________________________ Chapter 4: Skate The Big Apple -Out of that dump of a hometown and in the big city! Time to hit some of those great skate spots. ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ============================== -High Score- ============================== 150,000 points shouldn't be too hard for you, especially if you follow the line I used for it. Start by skating forward and ollieing off the concrete kicker ramp in the street. Nail a grab trick with some spin, then land in a manual. Skate a few more feet down the street and hit the short quarter pipe. Do another spinning grab trick and press R2 in the air. This will straighten you out and let you come down on the vert ramp in a grind. So, grind the edge of the ramp to the right, hop the gap to the ledge and grind again, then hop the next gap and land a special grind on the last ledge. At the end of it jump off and manual to the colored barrier across the street. Grind the barrier, then jump off at the end and manual over the the quarter pipe against the wall. Grind it, then hop over and special grind the cars that are parked there. Transfer from the cars to the concrete ledge in front of you. Special grind it as it curves around, then hop the gaps to the blue subway entrances and grind them a little. Ollie off the second one and manual a bit, grinding the grey bench if you want. Head in a straight line toward the building across the street with the quarter pipe against it. Hit the QP and nail a special air. Revert to manual, and use your remaining balance on a few flatland tricks. Don't forget to throw in flip tricks at every possible chance. ============================== -Hold-Grind Combos- ============================== The purpose of this goal is to show you how you can change grinds from one object to another without ollieing if they are close enough together. Two wooden benches have been set up right next to each other for you to practice these combos on. There are only 5 of them, and most of the time you'll get lucky and the same combo will be repeated 2 or 3 times in one set, so it shouldn't be too hard. ============================== -Help the student- ============================== There are 7 purse items scattered throughout the city, and you have 2 minutes to get them back and save the day. Skate forward and grind the red ledge on your right. At the end of it you'll be launched into the air near the ledge the item is on, so grind it to collect the icon. Jump off the ledge and land in the street. Cross over to the other side and continue skating down the sidewalk toward the tall structure the next item is on. Make sure you have your special meter full, and boneless the small quarter pipe under it to reach the icon. Spine transfer over and continue making your way down the sidewalk. You should see the next item floating in the air as you cross the street, so just use the quarter pipe under it to get it. When you come back down, take a right and head down to the end of the street. You should now see an item sitting on top of a banner over some quarter pipes. Hit the quarter pipe under the tickets building and grind the edge of the building's roof to the left. Hop from the roof to the banner for the icon. After you've got it, get back down to the street and follow it down until you see the next item on the left side of the road. Grind the row of dumpsters and you'll be launched into the air at the icon. When you come back down on the street, take a left. Ignore the icon you see to your right, then take the first left. Skate down the left side of this street until you pass the quarter pipe. Use the little ramp to jump up and wallride the wall, then quickly wallie up to get the icon. Make a 180 when you land and head back down the street to the icon you passed. Hit the quarter pipe under the big M, then press R1 + L1 to get off your board on the building. Turn to the right and leap for the last item. ============================== -Kill 5 famous skatespots- ============================== I think Neversoft forgot to make this goal harder for Sick difficulty, because it is insanely easy. At the first spot, the pyramid ledges, your goal is 5,000. How weak is that? It doesn't even have to be in one combo, either. I get more points than that falling down. At the second spot the goal is 10,000, then it's 20,000 at the waterfront, 30,000 at the memorial, and finally 40,000 at the Brooklyn Banks. You should be able to kill these scores, and if you don't I'm suprised you've made it this far. ============================== -Nut vendors unite!- ============================== How this goal has anything to do with uniting the nut vendors is beyond me, but the fact is you have 10 nut carts to destroy. Start by driving down the street and taking out the first guy all the way at the end of it. Make a right after you hit him and cruise down into the banks. At the basketball court down at the end the second cart is waiting for you, so smash it and make a U-turn. Drive up the ramp and take a left as soon as you get back to the sidewalk. Drive up the red brick ramp and you'll see the third cart at the top. Follow the red bricks as they lead you down a few ramps and back into the street. Take a right and smash the guy hanging out by the pyramid ledges. Make another U-turn and head down the street toward the waterfront, making sure to hit the fifth cart on the sidewalk as you do. When you get to the street in front of the waterfront, take a left. Ride down it until you see the row of dumpsters on the left. Slow down and turn into the alley that's just past them. Hit the vendor, then back out of the alley. Pull a reverse 180 and hit the guy standing by the subway entrance. Do another reverse 180 and drive down the street the arrow is pointing at. Hit the eight cart on the right sidewalk, then smash the ninth cart that's at the corner. The final cart is further down the road after you round the corner and he's on the left sidewalk. ___________________________ Chapter 5: Skating With The Locals -Time to shoot your own skate video to send off to Mr. Peralta. Get the locals' help. ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ ============================== -Film the local- ============================== Neversoft could have made this goal so much cooler and harder with just a better and more interestinhg control scheme for it. For example, the left analog stick could control how fast and in what direction you skate, and the right stick could control which way the camera is pointed. It would be in first-person, as if you were looking through the camera, and if the skater was off the screen for more than a second you failed. THAT would be realistic. Anyway, just follow the guy down the bridge and you've got this one crossed off. ============================== -Hit the killer banks line- ============================== Roll forward and start a grind on the cars. There's a short gap between 2 of them, so hold down triangle to transfer it successfully. Jump off the last car and manual to the flashing ledge. Grind it, hop the gap, grind the next flashing ledge, then ollie into a manual. Roll over to the benches, grind both of them, then manual up the quarter pipe to finish off the combo. ============================== -Crash and burn the car- ============================== Another pointless driving goal. To overheat this guy's car, just make a lap around the city with it. To make those corners without slowing down too much or hitting something, tap R1 a few times when you turn and keep your finger on X. Once you've gotten the engine temp to 300 degrees, it will catch fire and you'll have 13 seconds to deposit it into the river. Do so by hitting any of the bright flashing ramps set up at the waterfront. Amazingly, you survive the launch unharmed. ============================== -Help the local skater- ============================== The guards like hot, steaming nuts, and you're the guy to give them to 'em. Not like that, you sick bastard! From the nut vendors! To get the first sack, skate down the walkway in front of the guards. Turn left when you reach the sidewalk, and after skating down it for a little while cross the street to where the vendor is. Grab the nuts and U-turn back to the nearest guard. Pass him and skate down that walkway and turn right at the corner. At the end of the path cross the street to the left. Skate down past the pyramid ledges to the nut dealer between the barricades. Head back to the building where the guards are and give the nuts to the guard. Make another U-turn and skate down the sidewalk until you reach the street. Take a right and follow the road down until you see the one-way street on your left. Skate down it until you see the next guy, get the nuts, turn around, then skate back down the one-way. At the intersection go straight and take a shortcut through the memorial. Take a right at the end of the last rail and skate down the path to the final guard. For the second part of the goal, you have to execute a new special trick this guy made up called the 'New York Nut Buster'. He wants you to do the trick while jumping through one of the windows. So, technically, you'll be busting a nut through a window. Don't blame me, blame the game... Anyway, get your special meter up and grind one of the rails toward a window. Jump through the window and nail the move on your way down to finish the goal. ============================== -Gap the burning taxi- ============================== Ignore the kicker ramp next to the taxi. You won't be needing it. You have to ollie over the taxi and do the tricks listed to the right. The quickest way to get them all done is to hit one trick while you ollie, then land in a manual and do another trick to kill 2 at one time. Or more, depending on how long you can go. Finish off the list and your video for Peralta will be complete. ___________________________ Chapter 6: Favors For A Ride -Mr. Peralta thinks you guys might actually have a chance in Tampa.
