I especially enjoy a RPG that has a lot of content. Cross Edge is no exception, this game is packed with an abundance of tasks, characters, collectibles, etc. However, it does have a steep learning curve, but I enjoy the challenge. This game is not for the faint of heart, it can and will be frustrating at times. The difficulty jump is rather steep from different worlds if you fall behind in levels. Most importantly, you will have a rather difficult time if you do not explore the rich synthesis/Composite system this game has to offer. With it, level grinding isn't as important and should allow you to propel forward in each of the different worlds you explore. The goal of this guide is not how to play this game. The manual is actually helpful, and the in game tutorials could be better but they do their job. I will focus on giving you a list of options and tips on how you might proceed. I will tell you what I did so you can get a general idea of what you should be doing. However, this is a video game and you should play it how you want! You will soon find out that I like to get everything possible in a game. I don't expect to get it on my first run through, but I plan to eventually. The entire reason for this guide's existence is to organize my notes on this game. I would like to share a little bit of the knowledge I will gather on this lengthy game. Each new world consists of usually three layers. You do not always advance chronologically from one layer to the next. Each layer has its' own set of events and souls that you need to find by using the search command by pressing the [Square] button on your Playstation 3 controller. Some souls and events require higher search levels to find. There are two phases during a battle. The Enemy Phase where the enemy attacks and the Player Phase where the player attacks. Each command cost AP, Action Points, to complete. You can accrue up to two times your maximum AP by simply ending your turn. Each character can set up to four skills to the four PS3 buttons [Triangle], [Square], [Cross], and [Circle]. Each of those skills has a direction associated with it. Left for being Normal, Up for Burst, and Down for Down. Weapons range from having one to four equipable skill slots. Those skill slots are further divided into Normal, Burst, and Down slots. You can only equip skills in their appropriate slots. For example you will only be able to equip a Burst Skill if you have a Burst slot available on your weapon. Stronger weapons may even contain an All slot which can be attached with any skill. Also note that all characters have more than one starter skill. However, if your current weapon does not have the necessary skill slot available, it will be not be shown in your list of equipable skills. Once you have your skills equipped, you can use them in battle by expending AP. Each skill has a type associated with it. Each skill is either an Attack, Enchant, or Range skill. Attack skills are divided into A-Skill, B-Skill, C-Skill, and D-Skill. Enchant skills are divided into A-Enchant, B-Enchant, C-Enchant, D-Enchant, E-Enchant, G-Enchant, and H-Enchant. All skills are further divided into skill levels. Attack skills range from level 1 to level 5. Enchant skills go from level 1 to level 3. Range skills are not divided into groups. The Range skills range from level 1 to level 3. Depending on the order in which skills are used, Branch Combos may be executed. For example if you use an A-Skill 1 and an A-Skill 2, a level 1 Attack Combo would be executed. If you were to use an A-Skill 1 and a B-Skill 2, no Branch Combo would occur. Please note that the actual order of the skill does not matter. For example, you can either use A-Skill 1 first and A-Skill 2 or the opposite order. In both cases a Branch Combo would occur. However, if you used an invalid skill type in between the two, a Branch Combo would not execute. While attacking an enemy you will see four bars. Which are the HP, BREAK, DOWN, and BURST BAR. These bars have different effects if they are broken or filled up. If you successfully deplete the enemy's HP bar, it will convert into an OVERKILL bar. You can fill this bar by continuing to damage your enemy. When this bar fills up you will receive an OVERKILL bonus item as a reward. Please note that you can only fill the OVERKILL bar during one Combo Cycle. A Combo Cycle is when you are using Skills in quick succession until you either run out of AP or Combo Time. Every time you initiate a combo, there is a timer after that counts down to zero. If you use another skill before the timer hits zero, you will continue your combo and refresh the counter. Each skill resets the counter to a predetermined amount. Please note that any supplemental skills such as healing will cause your combo to end abruptly. Depleting the BREAK bar will restore your AP to your maximum, and cause all Branch Combos to do more and cause more hits. Depleting the BURST and DOWN bars will cause attacks of that attribute to become stronger. For example, if you deplete the BURST bar and use a Burst Branch Combo, it will cause additional damage and additional hits. Most skills can attack more than one enemy. Since this is the case, it is possible to deplete the BREAK bars of multiple enemies. However, please note that you can only accrue a maximum of two times your max AP at any given time. Thus breaking more than two enemies at the same time does not grant you more AP than usual. However, it is definitely possible to break only one enemy to fill up your AP then break another enemy later in your combo chain to fill it again. Please note that if a Branch Combo causes the BREAK bar to deplete, all characters who participated in the combo get the AP bonus! Thus, it is better to strategize then to spam combos blindly. The next important caveat during a battle is battle formation. The battle field is divided into two sections, the enemy and player sides. Each side consists of a 3 x 4 formation of squares. +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+ | | | | | | | | | | +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+ | | | | | | | | | | +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+ | | | | | | | | | | +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+ Each skill has a certain range and area of effect. You can check these during skill equipping by pressing the [Triangle] button when you have a skill selected. If your character is too far from your enemy, you may not be able to attack them. This is also true for the enemy. Experiment and find the best formation for your team. You may freely change your formation during a battle, but depending on far you move, a certain amount of AP will be deducted. You will build up SP, or special points, as you damage and kill your enemies. SP may also be gained by taking large amounts of damage. SP is used for EX Skills. These are like your regular skills but much more powerful. Like regular skills these can be link with other EX skills to cause devastating damage to your enemy if you have the correct amount of SP. To use an EX skill when you have some SP, simply press [R2] whenever you have a character selected. Like skills EX skills cost AP, but they cost a lot more. You can freely switch characters during a battle. If you are switching with a live character, a certain amount of AP is required. If you are switching with an unconscious character, there is no AP cost. You may also use items during battle. Items use AP like everything else. Depending on how many turns it takes you to win the battle you will get a boost to your rewards at the end. Winning the battle in one turn nets an S rating. Every turn afterwards gets one Grade less ranging from A, B, C, D, E, F, H, and I which is the lowest you can receive. Depending on your average party level and the enemies' level, each Grade will get you a different multiplier. Some battles can net you multipliers as high as 900%! These consist of STRENGTH, VITALITY, AGILITY, INTELLECT, and LUCK. These will go up based on a characters parameter growth. Your HP goes up by a set amount which is equal to 2 times your level + 2 times your VIT. The rest of the stats increase your attributes by the following: - STR gives 7 ATK and 0.5 HIT per level. - VIT gives 3 DEF and increases your HP growth. - AGI gives 0.5 AVD. - INT gives 6 MAG and 4 RST - LCK gives 0.5 HIT and 0.5 AVD. ATK and MAG are used to determine how much damage is inflicted physically and magically respectively. DEF and RST reduces the amount of damage taken physically and magically respectively. HIT and AVD are used to determine chance to hit and avoid respectively. During a level up, you will also gain PP which you can use to raise any stat to your liking. Each character has different PP costs for each stat, and as you increase your stats the PP cost will go up. Please note that each player will receive their own set of PP to use on themselves. You can also accrue PP points by winning event battles and unlocking titles. These PP points can be used on any of your characters, but are shared by everyone. You gain EXP, EP, and TP by winning battles and unlocking titles. EXP advances your level once you gain enough. EP is used to upgrade weapons, armors, and accessories. These items unlock recipes that you can use to create basically everything you need from weapons, armors, accessories, and items. After creating certain items once, it will be registered in any town and will be purchasable for gold. Some items will never be registered. You may also use an item to boost the Grade of any item you are synthesizing. Based on the quality of the item used the output may increase in Grade value. There is a small chance for failure, when this occurs Marie will make a random item. Sometimes she can make something good on accident, or something useless. Every item has a certain Grade limit, when you increase the Grade value this limit increase. You can improve the items further by Compositing raw materials onto your items.
