Also please note that all of the information in this FAQ is based on using an Arcade Stick with an orthodox hand position (left hand on joystick, right hand on buttons), not a controller. HCB Half Circle Back Short form for: Forward, Down+Forward, Down, Down+Back, Back. 360 1 Circle Short form for doing 1 full circle on your D+Pad or Joystick. Due to SF4 not requiring you to do a full circle to make it easier for new players to do this motion, you really only have to put in 6 directions: example; F, DF, D, DB, B, UB + Any button. Basically only 180ş + 1 more direction. 720 2 Circles Short form for doing 2 full circles on your D+Pad or Joystick. Similar to 360, you don't have to doing 2 full circles. Instead all you need is 630ş; F, DF, D, DB, B, UB, U, UF, F (1st 360ş), DF, D, DB, B, UB, U + Any button. Spend a little time here as the timing for doing this will be useful for Ryu's other link combo challenges. _______ Level 8 _______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Crouch ] Light Kick -> [ Crouch ] Light Punch -> [ Stand ] Light Punch -> [ Crouch ] Heavy Kick * c.LK > c.LP > s.LP > c.HK This link can be a little tough at first, but the key is to take your time and figure out a steady rhythm for doing the first 3 hits. Take a minute to tap it out slowly until you get them to figure out how slow to actually do it. You want to get as far away from mashing the buttons as you can because after you do this, you'll realize how easy the link actually was when you know what exactly the timing is supposed to be. Once you have the 3 hits down easily, just follow the same speed and rhythm and tap in the last c.HK _______ Level 9 _______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Heavy Kick -> [ Crouch ] Heavy Punch -> Hadoken -> [ EX ] Focus Attack * (corner) (jump-in) j.HK > (land) c.HP x QCF + HP x FA (level 1) Pretty easy, just tap out the Focus Attack at the end as soon as you do the Hadoken. Remember you have to push Dan into the corner to do this or else the Focus Attack will miss. I stick with just using HP for the Hadoken because your finger is already on HP, but you can use any P strength and it'll still work. _______ Level 10 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Heavy Kick -> [ Stand ] Heavy Punch -> Shoryuken -> Shinku Hadoken * (jump-in) j.HK > (land) s.HP x F, QCF + HP xx QCF + HP This is a tough one if your execution isn't really good. I found that the regular Shoryuken motion is better than the short-cut for this challenge, but you have to input the F as soon as possible after s.HK or else you won't be fast enough to get it to come out. If you're still having trouble I would suggest practicing without the j.HK at the start, so you should be doing: - s.HP x F, QCF + P xx QCF + P Keep doing it until it comes out easily making sure you're doing the smooth QCF motion after hitting s.HP > F. The F before the QCF should make a Shoryuken come out and that makes buffering Ryu's super much easier since you can just do another QCF + P and the super will come out. After you have that down, just add the j.HK back in and you should get this challenge easily. _______ Level 11 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Heavy Punch -> [ Stand ] Heavy Kick -> Shinku Hadoken * (jump-in) j.HP > (land) QCF + HK xx QCF + HP Really easy, just jump in with j.HP and do QCF + HK followed by a QCF + HP (since the HP is the closest P). The QCF + HK works because Ryu doesn't have any Special Moves or Unique Moves that require F + HK or QCF + HK. _______ Level 12 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Medium Punch -> Metsu Shoryuken * (jump forward) j.MP > (land) QCF, QCF + KKK You can pretty much hit Dan anytime he's in the air with j.MP, land and do Metsu Shoryuken and it'll work anywhere on the screen. _______ Level 13 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> Light Shoryuken -> Metsu Hadoken * DF, DF + LP > QCF, QCF + PPP Make sure you hit Dan when he's in the air or you won't be able to land in time to hit with Metsu Hadoken. Other than that, should be easy. _______ Level 14 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Heavy Kick -> [ Stand ] Heavy Punch -> Shoryuken -> [ EX ] Focus Cancel -> Metsu Hadoken * (jump-in) j.HK > (land) s.HP x DF, DF + HP x FADC (dash forward) > QCF, QCF + PPP Now you get into the more complex combos. If you don't have much experience with [ EX ] Focus Cancel which is also known as an FADC (Focus Attack Dash Cancel), this is a good time to learn. We'll work backwards to practice the execution for this challenge: - s.HP x F, QCF + HP x FADC > (dash forward) QCF, QCF + PPP Make sure you dash forward as soon as you tap the MP + MK for the FADC and you should be doing QCF, QCF + PPP while Ryu is dashing to get it to come out as soon as you finish dashing. Once you have that down, add s.HP before the Shoryuken and once you have that add the j.HK. It might seem roundabout to just add 1 move at a time, but it works best to just separate anything done in the air with anything that's done on the ground when you're trying to find the basic rhythm of a combo. _______ Level 15 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> Airborne Tatsumaki Senpukyaku -> Shinku Hadoken * (jump forward) QCB + HK > (land) QCF, QCF + HP There are 2 ways to do this, both works, but one can require you to be a little faster with your hands. The first way is to hit the Tatsumaki in front, land and then Super to finish the challenge. To do this, start by standing as close to Dan as possible and then dash backwards 3 times before doing the following: - (jump forward) QCB + HK > (land) QCF, QCF + HP If you're having trouble hitting the Tatsumaki while in the air, wait until Ryu hits the peak of his jump (basically the part when Ryu starts falling down from his jump) and then start doing the motion. It should come out when you're halfway down from the jump. When you touch the ground, switch which way you're doing quarter circle motions and pump out the Super. Now I understand some people might get frustrated with having to switch the motions so an easier way to do this is to cross up with the Tatsumaki instead. To do this, stand as close to Dan as possible and then dash backwards once and then take another step back with Ryu. Now you're at the perfect distance to cross Dan up with Ryu's Tatsumaki: - (jump forward) QCB + HK > (land) QCB, QCB + HP Now technically my notation is wrong because you are changing sides when you land, but I did this on purpose to illustrate a point. Since you'll be crossing up with Ryu's Tatsumaki, that means the Super motion will be done on the same side as your QC (quarter circle) motion for the Tatsumaki. This means you don't have to switch the side you're doing quarter circles on. Getting the Tatsumaki to land is again the same as before, just time Ryu's Tatasumaki for when Ryu is half way down from his jump and it should hit. _______ Level 16 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> Airborne Tatsumaki Senpukyaku -> [ EX ] Hadoken -> Metsu Hadoken * (corner) (jump-in) QCB + HK > (land) QCF + PP > QCF, QCF + PPP This has to be done in the corner for the EX Hadoken to hit. This time just setup to hit in front with the Tatsumaki, so push Dan into the corner and dash backwards 3 times. All the Hadokens require you to just input them as soon as you can. Also be sure that after you do the EX Hadoken to do the full motion for the Metsu Hadoken or else it won't come out. You can't buffer the Ultra with the Special motion so don't frustrate yourself trying. _______ Level 17 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Heavy Kick -> [ Crouch ] Medium Punch -> [ EX ] Hadoken -> Metsu Hadoken * (corner) (jump-in) j.HK > (land) c.MP x QCF + PP > QCF, QCF + PPP This should be easy except for the Metsu Hadoken. Just push Dan into the corner and keep trying. The Metsu Hadoken will miss if you're even a tiny bit slow. This is one of those challenges where you just have to be perfect or else it doesn't work. _______ Level 18 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Jump ] Heavy Kick -> [ Crouch ] Heavy Punch -> [ EX ] Tatsumaki Senpukyaku -> [ EX ] Hadoken -> [ EX ] Tatsumaki Senpukyaku * (corner) (jump-in) j.HK > (land) c.HP x QCB + KK > QCF + PP > QCB + KK Easy stuff, just push Dan into the corner and go nuts. There's really nothing challenging about this, just make sure the EX Hadoken comes out as soon as you land and then you do the EX Tatsumaki as soon as your EX Hadoken hits Dan. You should be starting the motion for the EX Hadoken as you see the 3rd hit of the EX Tatsumaki since you have a small window to buffer in the EX Hadoken so that it comes out as soon as he lands. _______ Level 19 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> [ Crouch ] Medium Punch -> [ Crouch ] Medium Punch -> [ Crouch ] Medium Kick -> Heavy Hadoken -> Shinku Hadoken * (corner) c.MP > c.MP > c.MK x QCF + HP xx QCF + HP Back to another really tough one. The best suggestion I have here is to just grind it out. If you're feeling like after a couple minutes you're not really making any progress, switch corners. You have to be perfect for this and I don't really suggest breaking this one up at all because it'll just take much longer if you try to perfect linking everything. Just try to get the rhythm for c.MP > c.MP > c.MK x QCF + HP. Heavy Hadoken will not hit unless you activate Shinku Hadoken on time which is why I do not suggest breaking up this challenge into smaller pieces. Just get used to doing the entire thing once you've made it past c.MP > c.MP. A little luck goes a long way here, especially if your execution isn't so good yet. _______ Level 20 ______________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ -> Focus Attack -> Solar Plexus Strike -> [ Crouch ] Heavy Punch -> Shoryuken -> Shinku Hadoken * (corner) FA (level 3) > (dash forward) F + HP > c.HP x DF, QCF + HP xx QCF + HP I found doing this with a little less finesse was actually a lot easier than trying to do it properly. This is a pretty common BnB for Ryu though so if you want a good combo to practice, this would be it. As for the challenge though, we can throw that out the window and just make this as easy as possible. Make sure to input the F, F right before the Focus Attack hits so that Ryu dashes forward right away. After that hit F + HP and then start jiggling out QCF and tapping HP until the combo comes out. Literally that's all you have to do. You might get unlucky and get a Hadoken instead of a Shoryuken, but just try again if that's the case. As for the timing, you should be doing this type of rhythm while standing as close to Dan as possible: 1) (close) s.MP > F + MP + MK, F 2) (close) s.MP > F + MP + MK, F 3) (close) s.MP > DF, DF + MP Each string has to be done really quickly so it basically sounds like Tap Tap Tap > Tap Tap Tap > Tap TapTap, all in under 2 seconds. If you're having trouble understanding how fast that is, try just doing a close s.MP into MP Shoryuken and include the taps of the DF as well while you do it. That's exactly how fast every thing has to be with a very slight pause between each repetition. The last s.MP into Shoryuken needs to be done a little faster than normal. It'll still combo if you're late, but you'll be pushed back too far and the EX Shoryuken will hit in the air instead of while you're on the ground. The link should be easy, but if you're having trouble with it, remember that you can just hit c.LK > c.LP as fast you want and then worry about the timing for c.MP after. It's usually better to separate the first 2 hits anyways as you might have trouble executing the entire thing as 1 string of attacks, instead it's more like 3 parts. You can either cancel or link the Super afterwards, it doesn't really matter as it's pretty fast and unless you're really late, the Super should hit. Anyways we'll start off with the beginning. We are going to want to double tap everything as close together as possible so the best thing to do is to always jump-in with a late j.HK, so do it as low to the ground as possible. Your button inputs should look like this: - (jump-in) j.HK (j.HK again before hitting the ground) > (land) c.MK (c.MK again to make sure it comes out when you land) x LK, LK (hit these 2 quickly after the second MK) That should net you the first 3 attacks easily. The trick is just getting used to double tapping F at the right time so that you're basically telling the game you want to dash forward after your Focus Attack hits. You don't have to do that when or after you hit for it to come out, but close to a full second before which a lot of people might not know about. This allows you to hold DB before E. Honda actually attacks with the Focus and he will still dash forward even though you're already holding DB to charge up for the Sumo Headbutt.
