1st Canadian level

I think it is after the 1st checkpoint, but you end up in this high building and you're supposed to protect this guy that runs out. There is a tank which is easy to kill, but so many germans in the building across the street and it always says I didn't protect the guy. Is there a way to follow him, or what am I supposed to do?
