The main purpose is to assist people who are trying to complete the Collection Record, but secondarily to that, this guide is also supposed to be a comprehensive guide to all the ways to acquire any given item. (Among other things, this means it doubles as a pirate hunting FAQ.) I am going to assume that people who use this guide are playing at a relatively advanced level. For example, I expect you to already know how to unlock the extra stages and Dark World levels, or at least how to look them up. That said, I have made an attempt to avoid spoilers wherever possible. What this guide is not: - A walkthrough. I'm not going to tell you how to get to or beat specific maps. There are plenty of guides for that already. - A stats FAQ. I will tell you how to get the items, not how good they are or how to level them properly. - A stealing mechanics guide. Stealing will be a big part of completing the Collection Record, but if you're serious about completing it then you should be able to get a level 9999 thief with maxed lovers easily enough, and one of those can steal anything from anyone at 99% accuracy, making the mechanics a moot point. o=============================================================================o | | | HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE | | | o=============================================================================o The bulk of this guide is a list of all the items in the game, arranged by how they appear in the collection record. If you are looking for a specific item, you can search for the item's code. The code is made up of the abbreviation for the section and the line on which it appears in the collection record. So if you want to look up the 34th sword, you can search for [SWD-34]. You can also search by the item name, since this guide is generally organized so that the first match is the listing. Here are the category abbreviations. Some items only appear as legendary; this will be shown as -/-/L. Item Rank: A general indicator of how good the item is considered to be. Higher rank items generally have better base stats, and the item's rank determines the enemy levels in the Item World. Sold in hub shops? This shows whether or not you can buy this item in the normal RosenQueen shops (the weapon, armor, and item shops in the hub areas.) Items bought from RQ will always be common. Note that there are some items that can be purchased in special shops in the Item World, but I'm not including those in this category. Random sources? This shows whether you can find the item from random sources, such as the bonus gauge, treasure chests, enemy equipment in the Item World, and the Item World RosenQueen shop. Bonus Ranks: This is a listing of what bonus ranks (as seen on the map select screen) can have this item on the bonus gauge. To make it easier to find the item, I am intentionally including only those ranks that can have the item appear on any part of the bonus gauge; it will generally be possible to get the item on bonus ranks slightly higher or lower than the range I have listed but it will be less likely to appear. Found on maps: This will list the story maps where enemies have this item equipped. The number indicates how many of the item are equipped by the enemies; obviously, if you're looking for a particular rarity, going to a map where there are many of the item will help your chances of finding it. I will also indicate if an item only appears when you play the stage as part of the story (first play only) or if it only appears when you come back to the stage after clearing it for story purposes (replay only.) Items that are not equipment won't show this section. Other Sources: Here I will list specific methods to get this item apart from finding it as enemy equipment on regular stages. o=============================================================================o | | | FILLING THE COLLECTION RECORD 101 | | | o=============================================================================o So, you want to complete the Collection Record, do you? Congratulations, you're officially insane. In all seriousness, though, it will be a long and time-consuming process and probably the very last thing you accomplish in Disgaea 2. So here are some tips to make the process a little easier. 1. Do everything else you are going to do first, but always keep item collecting in mind. The other late-game activities, especially leveling equipment, farming lovers, and collecting specialists, will necessarily have you going through a whole lot of random maps, and that means that you will have many, many chances to snag items that you still need for your collection without even trying for them. 2. Always check the bonus gauge. It takes two seconds and there's always a chance there'll be something you need on it. This applies to item world runs as well as playing through regular maps and leveling your characters. I can't count the number of times I've forgotten to check the bonus gauge once and missed a needed item. It's also a good idea to check enemy equipment in the item world, but this is more time consuming so as you keep filling in holes in your collection it eventually gets to be less worth the time. 3. When you start hunting down specific items to complete your collection, start with the hard ones first. It's tempting to start with that item where there's a level that has 12 of it equipped by the enemies, but you're going to feel like an idiot for resetting to get it when it turns up on a bonus gauge later while you're looking for something else that's harder to get. 4. Be patient. An item that can be of any rarity has a 1 in 32 chance of being legendary and a 3 in 32 chance of being rare. This doesn't necessarily mean you will even get a legendary within 32 tries either, because probability can be a jerk like that sometimes. 5. Keep at it. Good luck! o=============================================================================o | | | ITEM COLLECTION METHODS | | | o=============================================================================o =============== THE BONUS GAUGE =============== ----------------------------------- I. Understanding Bonus Gauge Levels ----------------------------------- A bonus gauge consists of 10 lines, and each line of the bonus gauge has a specific level. The level determines what ranks of items can appear on that line as well as how much EXP or HL you get if that line doesn't have an item. There are 50 such levels. The following table shows what each level can give you. You can use this as a reference when doing item collection in the Item World so you can know what ranks of items you can potentially see. Bonus Ranks vs. Bonus Levels -------------------------------- Standard maps have a bonus rank, which ranges from 1 to 65. Each bonus rank is defined by a specific configuration of levels for each line of the bonus gauge. Every bonus gauge follows the same basic pattern: Up to four lines of the gauge will be a particular level, then the next four lines will be the next level higher, and so on. For example, this is bonus rank 1: Line 0: Level 1 Lines 1-4: Level 2 Lines 5-8: Level 3 Line 9: Level 4 Each level of bonus rank effectively advances this pattern by 3 lines, so bonus rank 2 has levels 2/2/3/3/3/3/4/4/4/4, and so on. Remember that the main item listings in this guide refer to a recommended bonus rank for the map, as opposed to specific bonus levels as shown in the above table. ----------------------------------------- III. Getting the Item You Are Looking For ----------------------------------------- Notice from the above table that there is a wider range of possible item ranks as the bonus levels get higher, so you will probably want to shoot for the low end of the range of bonus levels that can give you the item you're looking for, to make it more likely that the specific item will appear. This trend is reversed by the time you get to the high 30s in item rank though, so for high rank items you will want to go for the high end of the range. There are two good methods for trying to find an item you are looking for on the bonus gauge: Item world and standard maps. Item World: Get a Geomancer with Bonus Change. Go through Item World levels and pay attention to the bonus gauge. You can use the lines that give EXP/HL and the above table to figure out what ranks of items are available on a given floor. When you reach a floor that has a bonus gauge that is likely to give you the item (and preferably a good geo panel layout so you can max out the gauge) take out the Geomancer and use Bonus Change until you get an item you want. Standard maps: Use the item listings to figure out what bonus ranks are good for finding the item. The ranks listed are the ones where the highest possible number of lines in the bonus gauge are capable of giving you the item (for ranks 3 and higher, the listed ranks can give you the item on all lines.) Again, you will probably want to go for a bonus rank on the low end of the range unless you're going for a very high rank item. Choose a map that you will use to look for the item. Save, enter the map, and reset until you get something you want. For standard maps, it can help to pass the Prinny Day bill to make all lines of the bonus gauge give items, but the tradeoff is that you will need to have a team of prinnies that can fill the bonus gauge and complete the map. It's up to you. ------------------------------- IV. How to Fill the Bonus Gauge ------------------------------- If possible, try to set up geo chains. This is generally the easiest way to fill up the bonus gauge. In the Item World, you will typically see a number of different colors and that same number of geo crystals. With one of the crystals being a null crystal, that leaves one color of geo panel without a corresponding geo crystal. In this case, the easiest way to set off a full geo chain is to throw all the geo crystals except null onto the last color on the list, throw the null crystal onto another color, then destroy the geo crystal of the color that the null crystal is on. Another common (and even better) configuration is the whole map having one color of panel and multiple geo crystals. You can get a full combo by arranging the crystals so that the null crystal is the furthest away from the one you destroy. You can use the Geomancer's Geo Change ability to change the geo pattern if you can't get the gauge filled from one chain. If geo chains still don't fill the gauge enough, or if you're doing standard maps, you will need to resort to some other tactics. You can also fill the gauge by doing combos (queue up multiple characters to attack the same target and execute them all at once) and killing enemies individually (you get about the same amount of credit for killing one enemy with an attack as you get for killing five enemies with that attack.) Here are my two favorite tactics: 1. Get a bunch of very low level characters. Their attack should be as low as possible (you can even equip Speed Weights to reduce their attack further.) Arrange them so they surround one tile so a lot of them can attack the same tile, but have one spot taken up by a character who has high enough stats that they can kill an enemy in one hit. +O+ X X +X+ X = Low level units + = Low level units with spears O = High level unit If you have access to the Kurtis robot class, they make the best choice for the units for the X position because their ability to attack twice if they haven't moved allows for bigger combos than you could get otherwise. Have an ally throw an enemy into the middle of this cluster, then have all of your units attack the enemy, ending with the high level character. You should end up doing a long series of attacks, possibly with some team attacks, ending with an attack that kills the enemy. This will give you a lot of credit to the bonus gauge. (I've gotten 5 rows filled from one enemy kill by using Kurtis bots.) 2. Get a bunch of low level units and one high level unit. The high level unit should have good enough stats that the low level units can't damage them and they can withstand damage from several turns of keeping an enemy lifted. Kill all but one enemy and have the high level character lift the last enemy. Arrange your low level characters around the high level character and have them all attack the high level character. Kurtis bots help with this again because they allow your combos to get bigger. This method is slower than the above method but it is completely reliable; as long as the high level unit doesn't die from lift damage, you can keep going on this one until you get the bonus gauge as high as you need. =============== ENEMY EQUIPMENT =============== The item listings below will tell you all of the standard maps where enemies equip certain items. You can force these items to be the rarity you want by saving before you play the map and resetting until the item you want has the rarity you want. Make sure you have some stealing hands in your inventory before you do this. There's nothing worse than resetting a lot of times and finally getting a rare/legendary of an item only to find out that you have nothing to steal it with. This will take some patience, since an item has a 1/32 chance of being legendary and a 3/32 chance of being rare. Of course, you can help your chances by picking a map where the enemies have several of that item equipped. ==================== MAIN CHARACTER BILLS ==================== Some characters will be able to propose "Be the Main Character" bills that you can listen in on as Adell if you have made him a senator. The other senators will be extremely in favor of these bills, and if they pass, it's game over. Unlike most other bills, having it pass is considered to be the bad result, and you can use the Persuade by Force option to make the bill fail. If you do, you will be awarded with an item. Each character who proposes this sort of bill has a specific item you will get. From my own experience, items gotten this way tend to be rare and legendary a lot more often than usual (they may even be prevented from being common, but I don't have enough data to confirm this.) ========= ITEM GODS ========= Item Gods appear on floor 100 of any legendary item. When you reach floor 100 from floor 99, the Item God will generally always have a specific item equipped: - If there is an item in the same group that is one rank higher than the one you are going through, that higher-rank item will be equipped. - If the item is a type of equipment that does not have an item that is one rank higher (either because it is the highest rank or because the type of item skips ranks) then the Item God will have the same item that you are in equipped. Note that the items equipped by Item Gods can be of any rarity; the item is only guaranteed to be legendary if it's a rank 40 item (these are always legendary.) So stealing from item gods is usually not worth the trouble unless it IS a rank 40 item or you have no other options for finding this item. Note also that there are a couple of other restrictions on this method: - You are only guaranteed to get the specific item if you enter floor 100 from floor 99. If you go to floor 100, Gency out and come back in, the Item God will not have the specific item unless it happens to get it at random. - Rank 40 items can only be stolen from Item Gods in rank 39 items in the Land of Carnage. If you go to floor 100 of a rank 39 item in Holt Village, the Item God will have another copy of the rank 39 item. You can get rank 40 items from the Item God 2 of another rank 40 item in either HV or LoC. I have listed item gods in the item listings for situations where you can get one item from a different one. I have not listed the cases where you get the same item except in a couple of places where this is significant. =============== HOSPITAL PRIZES =============== Some of the muscles, orbs, HP/SP combination recovery items, and emblems are awarded to you for reaching certain milestones of HP and SP recovered and times you have revived a character. When you get a prize, you can keep checking and canceling the "Claim Prize" option to force these items to be rare. However, items received as hospital prizes will never be legendary. I don't consider this to be a serious option for item collection, because the items can't be legendary, and more importantly you can only get each item from the hospital once over the course of your entire game (and anyone who's seriously collecting items has probably already gotten them all.) But in the interest of completion I've included these anyway. If you're just starting your game and your item collection, this can be a useful way to get a head start on some rare items. ================== MAGICHANGE WEAPONS ================== Magichange weapons are probably the easiest items to get all rarities of, but you have to know how it works. When you have a monster use Magichange, you will get credit for a rarity of the Magichange weapon based on the rarity of the weapon that the monster unit had equipped. The rarity of the rest of the monster's equipment doesn't matter, and neither does the human unit's equipment.
