How do you beat the rat in the race in Linguini's apartment? I have raced that rodent many times and never win. Is there an easy way to do it?

I've gotten all the recipes for the 1st mission, as well as the keys, but when I get back to the colony, the second mission is still locked?
(I used to cheat to get all the recipes though...)
