A commonly known technique for carrying more items is as follows. Since you can put presents in letters to send to people and remove them when you want, you can use letters as a storage device, allowing 10 more items, one in each letter.

You can't put fish or bugs in a letter. lol if you try.
Using this, you can essentially hold 29 items, if you include wearing things and holding a tool.
