1) INTRODUCTION
******************************************************************************
Machi e Ikouyo Doubutsu no Mori (MeIDnM) was released by Nintendo for Nintendo
Wii in Japan on November 20, 2008, four days after the release of Animal
Crossing: City Folk (ACCF) in North America and two weeks before the release of
Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City (ACLGttC) in Europe & Australia. The
games' releases coincided roughly with the second anniversaries of the
respective Nintendo Wii console releases.
This guide assumes that the player is familiar with ACCF. Virtually all of the
MeIDnM gameplay is the same as that in ACCF.
******************************************************************************
2) TECHNICAL GAMEPLAY
******************************************************************************
Machi e Ikouyo Doubutsu no Mori was manufactured to play in a Japanese Nintendo
Wii. It cannot function in a non-Japanese Wii without the assistance of
additional software, such as FreeLoader.
When moving a player from the DS version of the game (see below), MeIDnM will
connect only with Oide yo Doubutsu no Mori (OyDnM). It will not connect with
the North American, Australian, European, or Korean versions of Animal
Crossing: Wild World.
Similarly, when using the DS Suitcase (DS Download Play) to visit other towns,
while MeIDnM will connect with a DS from any region, it will not allow a
Japanese version player to visit a North American, Australian, European, or
Korean town (or vice versa).
When using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC), a Japanese version player can
connect with towns from any version.
******************************************************************************
3) LANGUAGE
******************************************************************************
This game uses the Japanese language and has little use of English. Written
Japanese makes use of three main systems: kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
Kanji refers to Chinese characters used in written Japanese. School children
are taught the 1,945 regular kanji (identified by a 1981 governmental decree)
used in "official" communications (there are thousands of other kanji in use).
In MeIDnM, you can choose whether to display kanji in the game (see below).
In children's video games, texts are often written entirely in hiragana and/or
katakana.
Hiragana, meaning "ordinary syllabic script," consists of 48 syllables. It is
mainly used to write word endings, but is widely used in materials for children.
Hiragana symbols appear flowing or "feminine."
Katakana, meaning "part (of kanji) syllabic script," also consists of 48
syllables. It has various uses, including foreign words and emphasis (like
bold or italics in English). Katakana symbols appear angular or "masculine."
Romaji refers to the system where written Japanese is represented by the Latin
(or English) alphabet.
This guide uses romaji versions of Japanese names used in the game. The
corresponding Animal Crossing: City Folk names are included in brackets. The
author apologizes for mistakes in translation.
******************************************************************************
4) MOVING
******************************************************************************
You can move your Oide yo Doubutsu no Mori player to Machi e Ikouyo Doubutsu no
Mori!
When speaking to [Rover] Mishiranuneko (or Unknown Cat), select "I'm new!" then
"Move from DS." Place the OyDnM game card into the DS and select DS Download
Play. You need to choose the name of the OyDnM player you wish to move.
Your player's name, face design, and haircut will transfer. Also, most of your
catalog will transfer. Items in the catalog that don't transfer are items that
cannot be ordered from the catalog in MeIDnM (e.g., Mushroom Series, Gulliver
items, paintings, Saharah wallpaper/carpeting, Gracie items, gyroids, fossils,
etc.). Your OyDnM player will still remain, available for continued play.
Items available only via DS transfer of OyDnM catalog:
Miniature Car
Festive Flag
Festive Candle
Birthday Card
Four-Leaf Paper
Items now available to order from the catalog (not orderable in OyDnM):
Barber Shirt Citrus Shirt Tin Shirt Purple Feather
Grass Shirt Kiwi Shirt Green Feather White Feather
Snow Shirt Watermelon Shirt Blue Feather Rainbow Feather
Crossing Shirt Strawberry Shirt Yellow Feather Halo
Splendid Shirt Grape Shirt Red Feather Turban
Fiendish Shirt Melon Shirt
For [Tortimer] Kotobuki, it's deja vu!
******************************************************************************
5) KEYBOARD
******************************************************************************
The default keyboard displays hiragana. Press "(katakana) kana," in orange in
the lower left corner, to find katakana. Similarly, press "(hiragana) kana,"
in orange in the lower left corner, to return to hiragana.
The upper right key is the backspace/delete key.
The key below the hyphen is the space key.
Use the analog stick or the D-pad to move the cursor.
The dakuten and handakuten diacritical marks are in green in the upper left
corner. They "light up" in white when you have the option to add them to your
text. Press the third key in green (when it's "lit up") to produce small kana
for "a," "i," "u," "e," "o," "tsu," "ya," "yu," or "yo."
Click the blue "ABC" key to find the Latin alphabet keyboard. It offers the
option of entering romaji that automatically converts to kana! Using the
orange keys in the lower left corner, press "(hiragana) kana" or "(katakana)
kana," to convert to hiragana or katakana, respectively. To end conversion,
press the orange key on the very left, "(kanji) ei."
Clicking the blue "(hiragana) a i u" key, in the middle on the bottom, returns
you to the hiragana keyboard.
Clicking the blue key in the bottom right corner brings up four pages of
symbols.
******************************************************************************
6) GETTING STARTED
******************************************************************************
Just like Animal Crossing: City Folk, if you haven't created a village, the
game opens showing a random town with the camera usually following a villager.

If you are moving into a village, you will appear riding on a school bus driven
by [Kapp'n] Untenshu (or Driver). [Rover] Mishiranuneko rides next to you.
You have only six spaces for your player and town names.
Just as in Animal Crossing: City Folk, your responses to [Rover's]
Mishiranuneko's questions will determine your player's sex (number 4) and
face/hair design (numbers 6, 7, and 8). Here are his questions:

******************************************************************************
8) ICONS
******************************************************************************
If you point your Wii remote at the screen, you will see a row of icons across
the bottom of the screen. They are the same ones as in Animal Crossing: City
Folk. To refresh your memory, here is the list from left to right:
1) [Pockets] mochimono
2) [Designs] mai desain or My Designs
3) [Bugs and Fish] mushi sakana
4) [Photos] shashin
5) [Friends] tomodachi risuto or Friend List
6) [Keyboard] chatto or Chat
7) [Map] chizu
******************************************************************************
9) COLOR IN DIALOG
******************************************************************************
When you see text in purple, it is usually words for items, such as Floral
Paper or Master Sword or Axe.
When you see text in dark blue, it is usually a player's name.
When you see text in light blue, it is usually words for functional or
miscellaneous things such as Map or Attic Bed or 18,400 Bells.
When you see text in dark green, it is usually referring to a place, like Town
Hall or Bulletin Board.
When you see text in light green, it is usually the town's name.
When you see text in dark pink, it is usually an animal name, like Tanukichi or
Caroline.
When you see text in light pink, it is usually words for an event, such as New
Year's Day or Countdown.
******************************************************************************
10) ARRIVAL
******************************************************************************
[Kapp'n] Untenshu drops you off at the [Bus Stop] Basu no riba. [Rover]
Mishiranuneko tells you to visit the [Town Hall] Yakuba. Here is what [Pelly]
Pelico says:
1) She shows you on the map where available houses are located
2) Do you know how to pull up the map
...a. Of course!
...b. Tell me!
From here, you can do almost anything in your town including visit [K.K.
Slider] Totakeke. You cannot save, however, until you speak to [Tom Nook]
Tanukichi. Also, you can't exit your town or open your Gate until you finish
[Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's tasks.
Go to your home and enter it, then exit to meet [Tom Nook] Tanukichi and
exchange small talk. From there, you're off to his store.
******************************************************************************
11) TANUKICHI'S TASKS
******************************************************************************
[Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's tasks are the same as in ACCF:
1) Meet your villagers (six in a new town) and [Tortimer] Kotobuki (Sonchou)
2) Change into your uniform
3) Plant flowers and trees
4) Deliver a piece of furniture
5) Write and mail a letter (it doesn't matter what you write)
6) Deliver carpeting
7) Deliver a Watering Can to the recipient of the letter
8) Write an ad on the [Bulletin Board] Keijiban (again, it doesn't matter what
you write)
******************************************************************************
12) HOUSE UPGRADES
******************************************************************************
Your debts to [Tom Nook] Tanukichi are as follows:
1) 19,800 bells for your starter home (4x4) (18,400 bells after tasks)
2) 120,000 bells for the first expansion (6x6)
3) 248,000 bells for the second expansion (8x8)
4) 368,000 bells for the upstairs room (6x6)
5) 598,000 bells for the basement (8x8)
When [Tom Nook] Tanukichi asks what roof color you want, he offers four colors
at a time in the order of red, blue, yellow, green; pink, orange, aqua, pea
green; purple, brown, white, and black.
The item limit for each room is 64 items. This maximum applies no matter what
size the room is, though a 4x4 room can hold only 32 items, at maximum, due to
the limit of available space.
Placing the maximum number of items, by itself, does not "lock you out" of your
house (e.g., placing 192 items in a two-story house with basement). The author
is not yet sure what, if anything, will trigger a player getting "locked out"
of their house.
******************************************************************************
13) GETTING NOOKINGTON'S
******************************************************************************
The store upgrades are the same as in Animal Crossing: City Folk:
1) To obtain Nook 'n' Go:
...a. 30,000 bells in transactions at Nook's Cranny, and
...b. Nook's Cranny must be open for a minimum of eight days
2) To obtain Nookway:
...a. 80,000 bells in transactions at Nook 'n' Go, and
...b. Nook 'n' Go must be open for a minimum of 15 days
3) To obtain Nookington's:
...a. 150,000 bells in transactions at Nookway, and
...b. Nookway must be open for a minimum of 22 days
4) Unlike prior versions of the game, Nookington's does not require having a
player from another town make a transaction at your store.
5) Just as in prior versions, both buying and selling at Nook's counts toward
the transaction thresholds.
6) Just as in prior versions, paying your mortgage has nothing to do with store
upgrades.
7) Just as in prior versions, Nook will not upgrade on a holiday.
Nook's Cranny is open from 8am to 10pm.
Nook 'n' Go is open from 7am to 1am.
Nookway is open from 8am to 10pm.
Nookington's is open from 9am to 9pm.
Thirty days after you obtain Nookington's, as you are exiting the store, [Tom
Nook] Tanukichi will survey you about what you look for in your shopping
experience. The choice of response will allow you to change your store if you
desire:
...[Variety] shinazoroe (keep or switch to Nookington's)
...[Balance] baransu (keep or switch to Nookway)
...[Good hours] eigyoujikan (keep or switch to Nook 'n' Go)
...[Nothing much] betsuni...
All players living in the town have a chance to "vote."
One week after [Tom Nook] Tanukichi starts his survey(s), he will announce the
result. If a change will happen, he will close the store on the following day.
[Tom Nook] Tanukichi will ask his survey again, 30 days after the new store
opens or 30 days after announcing the results (if there is no change). If the
store changes, the order of the survey responses will change (the response
corresponding to the current version of your store will be first on the list).

16) HAIR STYLES
******************************************************************************
Your answers to [Harriet's] Kattorinu's questions determine the shape and color
of your new haircut. Your new 'do is categorized by color and style, just like
clothes and accessories (see below).
The color and style of your hair matters for [Gracie's] Grace's fashion check
and [Kicks'] Shank's shoe shine.

17) SHOE SHINES
******************************************************************************
When getting a shoe shine from [Kicks] Shank, you can choose to have your new
shoes based on either color or style. The game uses the color and style
designations of your clothes, accessories, and haircut to determine your new
shoes.
If wearing a helmet, hair color/style IS considered.
If wearing a wig, hair style is not considered.
When you select color, your shoes are based on the color that has the highest
count. Your clothes has two colors, each accessory (if any) has two colors,
and your haircut has two colors. Whichever color has the highest count out of
the eight, six, or four colors (depending on how many accessories you wear)
determines your shoes.
When you select style, your shoes are based on the style with the highest count.
Your clothes has one style, each accessory (if any) has one style, and your
haircut has two styles. The style with the highest count out of the five, four,
three, or two styles (depending on how many accessories you wear) determines
your shoes.
[Kicks] Shank may have some trouble with colors. It seems he sees red as pink
and pink as red. He also seems to produce black shoes when you might expect
brown. Lastly, he may produce orange shoes when your player is expecting
yellow. If you don't get the shoes you want when shining "by color," use the
"by style" option instead.
Here are the 20 possible shoes with their corresponding color and style and a
brief description of their appearance:
Masculine shoes:
...yellow/Striking - yellow with red accents
...red/Cool - red slip-ons
...orange/Gaudy - orange with white laces
...green/Fancy - green with white stripes
...blue/Funky - blue with white laces
...white/Fresh - white with red and blue accents
...black/Refined - black oxfords
...purple/Strange - purple with white dots
...brown/Subtle - brown fabric
...pink/Cute - pink with white accents
Feminine shoes:
...yellow/Gaudy - yellow mary janes
...red/Funky - red mary janes
...orange/Striking - orange sandals
...green/Fresh - green mary janes
...blue/Cool - blue pumps
...white/Fancy - white with black bow
...black/Strange - black patents
...purple/Refined - purple pumps
...brown/Subtle - brown slip-ons
...pink/Cute - pink
******************************************************************************

can get an appraisal of your ensemble. The items considered are your clothes,
accessories, haircut, hair color, and shoes.
If wearing a helmet, hair color/style is NOT considered.
If wearing a wig, hair style is not considered.
[Gracie] Grace will comment on your Look, if any, and your shoes. He will

Do:
1) wear at least one accessory (hat, wig, helmet, glasses, mask, etc.)
2) choose a haircut that matches the style of your shirt
3) wear shoes that match by color
